As many of you know I am a diehard fan of the SwissTool and Spirit. Many of you even joined me in my Challenges for them both. During those and my Surge ( a quality Leatherman that I do now carry from time to time) many kept lamenting how they missed their Rebars and even went excitedly back to them as soon as the challenges were over. I wish to understand this devotion for what apears on the surface to be a much less refined tool, so I'm asking if any one would like to join me for a Rebar 30 day challenge starting July 1st
-
Rebar is just a smaller ST300 . I used my 300 for a week..couldn't get back to the Charge fast enough. Think I have a Rebar around here somewhere do I would be down for a Rebar challenge. Might break me of snubbing non OHO tools in my EDC.

Rebar Love
Wasn't that a song by Golden Earing?

Thanks Pacu,
Hope you find your Rebar I made need some support. I love my outside opening tools. I'm afraid of the withdrawl symptoms.

I think if we put our regular carry up on top of the fridge we will be inclined to carry the Rebars ::) ::) :D
-
For me, any "love" I have for the Rebar derives from its excellent utility to size ratio. Lots of utility in a small, easy to carry package. I do muchly prefer outside opening tools (Swisstool Spirit), but the Rebar has a lot going for it. The Spirit and Rebar battle for my daily carry (when not engaged in a Challenge).
I have a Rebar badge, but might be interested in doing another 30 days.
Maybe was could have a Stupid Badge for doing the same 30 Challenge more than once.

If scissors are added then the Rebar is just about as good as it gets in an EDC for me  I carry many different MTs these days but when the Rebar first came out I carried it for a few years and in the days before I added scissors to it I only paired it with an Executive and was very happy with only it :tu: I am a fan of the Supertool and this smaller version of the ST was right up my alley :like:
-
Thanks PN, it'll be good to have you in another of my challenges. :salute:
Poncho dose that mean I can count you in too? :pok: :pok:
It's like getting the gang back togather again. :ahhh :D :ahhh

Thanks PN, it'll be good to have you in another of my challenges. :salute:
I did say "might". :) I have to survive the ongoing SOG PowerAccess Deluxe Challenge first. My current rating of the PAD is 5/10.

Douglas,
I think you're approaching the issue backwards. You look at the Rebar and presuppose the swisstool is superior(more refined) and subjectively judge from there.
Maybe you could approach using the Rebar with the idea that 'all you need is all you need.' The Rebar is half the price of a swisstool and very rugged/functional considering the size. Comparing the swisstool to the rebar is fundamentally wrong in my opinion. They are not even made to compete with eachother at any level of the MT realm. I realize that you have swisstool goggles on from so many years of loving it, but not everyone thinks that way. That is why not everyone trashes all their other tools for a swisstool. :tu:
My biggest reason for carrying a Rebar(outside of challenges) sometimes is that the loose tolerances make it more reliable than a swisstool at my job(common to be working around dust for hours a day at times). The rebar can be easily modded and disassembled for cleaning, where the swisstool cannot. This means refinement is sometimes a negative for me personally. So, without me jabbering anymore, maybe try not to compare a rebar to a swisstool? Then the answer to the question of why some love the rebar can be realized.
-
I did the rebar challenge and it was easy breezy. Really made me ultra familiar with the tool and understand it's usefulness and small size. It's a great mix of the two. It's about as small as you'd want to go with a deluxe and capable tool as it is.
-
Prior to getting my first Rebar, I had a lust for SwissTool Spirit. After I got my Rebar, I suddenly don't find the Spirit that desirable after looking at both's pliers.
I'm inclined to join a 30-day Rebar challenge as my BO Rebar will be arriving soon. But I'm sure it will ace any daily challenge I face in my urban life (mainly cutting paper and apples).
I'm keen tho if I will like the ST300 over the Rebar. I'll be getting an ST300 soon also and will decide which plier-based MT I will EDC.
In the meantime, I'll be following this thread. :tu:
-
To understand Rebar love, all you have to do is go through the Rebar Owner's Club, and the 30 day Rebar challenge thread.
One of Leatherman's best offerings, to this day. :like:

so you "think" you have a rebar "around here somewhere"... hmmm... you sound like you do not care much about that gem... Mmay... Maybe you'd like to be an ubergenerous person and give that Rebary away in a GAW? >:D :D :D :D :pok:

Absolutely. This is all about me coming to understand as many of the facetts that make the Rebar so apealing as possible. Ease of modding seams to be a reoccuring reason so join in and show off that Mod.

G-man,
You are correct in your assertions about my bias. My bias toward the Vic Swisstool and Spirit are exactly why I want to do this challenge.
With out putting my Vics away :ahhh and actually taking up the Rebar :tu: I could never hope to understand it's allure. One of the many great things about life here at MTo is the exposure to others and how they see the world of MTs differently. ??? I look forward to a journy of discovery with the Rebar, good times with friends, new friends, and new ideas. Hope you can join in or at least continue to add your always insightfull commentary. It's always appreciated (BY ME AT LEAST).
Thanks and continued Blessings Brother. :salute:

Anytime and thank you for the kind words!
I won't be doing a Rebar challenge(will be doing a different one), but will watch you and the others with interest as you get to know the Rebar. :)

Congratulations for finding and receiving your Rebar, and I do understand wanting to understand why it is favored by several fans on this forum and elsewhere.
Yes, the best way I have learned about any of my MTs is to use it, and a challenge is an excellent way to go about learning.
I have thought a Vic Swisstool or Spirit would be in my future, then suffered price shock and also, unable to locate one to actually handle to appreciate the refinement that has been used to describe.
I started my MT experience with a WAVE, but just not lovin it, then found a ST300 for under $40, liked it, then respected it via 30 day event. Told the Rebar was identical and smaller, so I found one at bargain price, used for a 30 day, and found it a great alternative to have with me when dedicated tools were not handy. Now I have 4 Rebars, 2 traveled with me, a BO in bag in truck cab or on belt, and a Stainless in my suit case.
A Coyote just because it is pretty and on sale, and a new Heritage just purchased because sheath and bargain price and handy gift card.
Scissors not a big deal for me, I edc a 58cm Vagabond. Also, have a Micra near, or a Vic Climber.
I will give your consideration. I have just started a new journey, no longer have a smartphone, and not certain I have method to include photos via my current internet connectivity tool. With that said, I will follow along for sure and be a fan of those committed to making the attempt.
-
Thanks LC. Look forward to your additions to the challenge even if you don't find a way to join us.
-
For me, any "love" I have for the Rebar derives from its excellent utility to size ratio.
Ding-ding-ding! I think that is why those of us who reach for the Rebar do so. I have a Surge. I like it. Ok, I think the blade holder is poorly executed, as I bent yet another t-shank in it over the weekend working on something, but the rest of it is good. But it's big, it's bulky, it's HEAVY.

Yep. The Rebar is pocketable. It really is capable for the size and weight. In comparison to other tools with similar loadout. This in a round about way is making me remember I would really like to have a Vic multi... :tu:

Does it say Rebar on the handles? :D
Yes it still does - thanks! I shall give it due consideration. I have the Rebar VX (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,74592.msg1602330.html#msg1602330) I might send into the fray. :multi:
-
I concur with Poncho, GLBM and others about size/weight/utility/and cost ratio.
Back in September I bought my boxed Rebar with leather sheath through Amazon. It has been on my belt daily ever since. Thats work and play. So for all intents and purposes, I've completed a 10 month challenge. Is there a badge for that? I don't care. Ive no plans to abandon its use. I just carry what works.
Yes, a scissors a la PST II would make it perfect, but I have a Micra on my Keychain anyway, so I'm good
-
I have handled or owned at least 100 different multitools from more than a dozen brands, and to me the Rebar is in the TOP 5 podium,
after more than 25 models I am confident that the Micra and Rebar are the two best and best value (bang for your buck) models that Leatherman makes :multi:
Oftentimes I replace my pirit by a Rebar on my belt, and never ever have I been let down. ;)
It just works, it is pocketable, tough, well built and cleverly designed. An excellent do it all, jack of all trades multitool, affordable and time proven.
The main drawback to me (lack of Scissors) is naturally and easily overcome by pairing a Micra, 58mm SAK or other Victorinox with it, :tu:
I just say try it out for you and if you don't like it sell it, it will probably be a few dollars lost and a lot of knowledge gained at worst,
or you'll fall in love like I and others did and it will become a cornerstone of your EDC :salute:
I even sold my ST300 as the Rebar did everything than the ST but was friendlier to the pocket, the wallet and the EDC system.

Agreed. You could pay full price for both a Leatherman Rebar and a Micra for the scissors, and after spending that $85, you'd have more functionality and a cost savings over the Wave, but with cost and weight savings over the Surge. Even better if you get Rebar and Micra used for a lower price. A little tool overlap, sure, but also you'd have some of the lesser used Leatherman components like tweezers and nail file.
I carry Rebar on my belt and a Micra on my keys, and seldom need anything else. I still carry a Swiss Army Knive because I always have, and they are useful too. You could easily ditch the Micra and get a Super Tinker to the same effect.

I have carried a Rebar for a while and have to say it's rusty but trusty. The rebar is a tool that has never let me down. Lockup on the tools is excellent even after heavy use. If I was to pick any multi from my collection for a survival situation I would pick the Rebar 10/10. Everything you need and nothing you don't. I pair it with my Spyderco Dragonfly for EDC. I like having a lightweight blade for small tasks and the Rebar blade for my beater knife.

Thanks every one for all the great input. I was hoping more people would be diong the challenge with me. Would it be better if it was set to start in August instead of July? So far it looks to be a very short list of participants.

ever since I saw this tool, everytime I read "Rebar", in my mind sounds (song rhythm):
"Rebar,
Take it eeeeeaaaasy,
For there is nothing that we can do,
Rebar, Rebar...
..."
and since that song is inside my mind and the name of the tool does never fail to trigger it, :ahhh
I just take it easy. :tu:
So i have a love/hate relationship with this Leatherman, :)
and in that way I understood my particular kind of "Rebar love" ::)
-
Glad you can join us an0nemus. :tu: :tu:
So TP are you joining in for the challenge :pok: :pok: or the commentary >:D , all good either way.

It is an special tool for me (came from a member here, and is engraved with the "Mt.org", furthermore tomorrow I will hopefully meet Tim Leatherman again after 4 years and this Rebar is the tool I will bring to have signed, to make it triple special :ahhh
so if I get to have it signed it will remain cherished and possibly less carried :dd: I have too many other tools that will do the job and are not special in any particular way

Well TP hope you are able to join for the challenge BUT your commentary will definately be welcome either way.

Is this still on? 1 July?

Yes, I just got an early start tonight.

You put a hook in your finger to test the Rebar cutters? :D
Seriously. Ouch!!

If I'm going to test a tool, I plan on really testing it.

:ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
Looks like that might have hurt a bit

Unlike SAKs, the Rebar has no hook yet got you hooked very strongly! :ahhh :ahhh
-
I'll be watching along with the rest. :tu:
The Rebar may just be my favorite multitool. Doing a Rebar challenge helped solidify that sentiment for sure.
I'd join in, but I have other fish to fry....so to speak.
Y'all have fun!

Never mind, I'll just go ahead then...
Day 1
Before we start, a word of warning... my Rebar is not standard. I've been assured this is no problem though.
I liked the Rebar's compact form factor, the pliers' exchangeable cutters and the blades so much that I decided to use it as a basis for my mod, which resulted in the Rebar VX. To increase versatility I've added a regular and jeweler's bit driver and scissors, as well as a file, as found on the Wave, instead of the fixed Phillips and medium drivers, the lanyard ring, a washer and the original file. More on this in these posts:
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,74592.msg1582735.html#msg1582735
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,74592.msg1598021.html#msg1598021
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,74592.msg1602330.html#msg1602330
The file mod was inspired by SteveC: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,74592.msg1583248.html#msg1583248
Now, why did I do this mod? Why not simply buy a Wave?
The answer lies in the desire to have the Wave tool set inside a Leatherman that is compatible with urban street-legal use hereabouts, where OHO is frowned upon by the law. Enter the Rebar VX. This also constitutes a powerful illustration of just how flexible the Leatherman tool system is in general, and possibly an incentive for a few mods by others on the forum.
BTW - I also have a Wave and a ReWaveR (for the latter see https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,74592.msg1609173.html#msg1609173).
-
I'll be watching.
-
That is awesome, D_T.
It's a Wavar.
-
Great start DT 8) Love the Rebar and will watch this thread with interest :tu: :like:

I am watching as well, I do luv the simplicity of the REBAR, I have 3, I mean 4, picked a Heritage model at a Cabela's with gift card, still in package.
Here is a pic from last summer -

Am I going to be the only participant? ??? :-\
-
Who can compete with the Rebar VX?
-
Am I going to be the only participant? ??? :-\
You could always jump ship to Harley's rotational Challenge :pok:
-
I understand I'd need a Gerber for that, right? Don't have one...
-
Do not waiver, D_T, continue to Wavar! :multi:
-
I'll tag along for a while at least, see if any others join in  :D
I have to - I'll be on a road trip through northern Europe with the family for another week and I only brought the SOG PAD and the Rebar VX :D
-
D_T your official first day post started us off great. Sorry mine is a little late. I had to make some repairs to the under plating on our RV and break camp for the return trip home.. Vacation is ending once again. Any way my stock Rebar was helpful for the repairs. I've been carrying it all week on vacation, trying to get familiar with it before I put it to use at work. It has done well so far. I just have a hard time fumbling for the right tool. I'm to accustomed to my Swisstools. Hopefully this will get easier as I use the Rebar more.
-
:like:
Yay! I'm not alone :D
Hope the repairs went well Douglas :tu:, have a safe trip

I had a Rebar and wasn't crazy about the locking mechanisms or the tools on the inside aspect. Swapped it out for a Spirit and haven't looked back. The locking system, tools on the outside, butter blade and the fact that nobody bats an eye when I bring it out are all redeeming factors for me concerning the Spirit :tu:

Hi DT! Apologies as I just sold my brand new BO Rebar a couple of days ago and am now waiting for my used BO Rebar to arrive in a couple of weeks. I'm currently carrying my Wingman as EDC LM.
I hope it's still okay with you that I join the day my used Rebar arrives

Those qualify as extenuating circumstances in my book :D - I'm sure Douglas agrees :tu:
-
Day 2
Speaking about books, I have no doubt the Rebar (be it stock, or VX) would make a good companion in the type of scenery addressed in my vacation literature. See how well the BO handles blend in with the black cover, and the silver pivot heads vaguely reminiscent of rivets...
-
Rebar got a lot of use today. From removing phillips panel screws, calibrating thermostats to rewiring a walk-in freezer, now off to truck lighting and tailgate repairs.
Still fumbling with getting tools out but it was a little smoother today.
-
:like:
Nice pic & uses Douglas :tu:
Day 3
I've just been reading up on the knife laws where I am now on vacation, and in view of the fact this is a national capital with lots of museums I have decided to not actually carry the Rebar around today.
This does not prevent in-house use, however :D. We're in a part of the hotel that hasn't yet undergone some planned renovations, and it shows. The knob on the cabinet needed tightening...
Note the tool shown is not Rebar standard. However, I'm sure the stock Phillips driver would have coped equally well.
-
Hah - found another loose knob. This room is falling apart >:D :multi:

"Note the tool shown is not Rebar standard. However, I'm sure the stock Phillips driver would have coped equally well."
Yes it would. I like the stock Phillips for the added length and the narrow straight was just right for block connectors I used in previous job.
Douglas my tools loosened up with time through use during challenge for me.
Keep up the great reports.
-
Not entirely convinced by the durability of the furniture, I proceeded to check the tightness of the nuts and bolts holding the ceiling beams together. The impending renovation is unlikely to see these replaced, so I wanted to make doubly sure for the sake of any future guests. I needn't have bothered - these are as tight as they have been since the hotel was constructed with a slightly different purpose in mind, over 200 years ago: as a warehouse for goods to be shipped overseas. Note the size of the ceiling beams, designed to support floors capable of bearing all kinds of heavy goods (bulk and piece-wise). The bolts correspond to what is currently M16 in cross-section.
-
Sorry I'm late to the party. Although I have been rocking the Rebar for the past few days. Here is pic of it next to it's companion the Climber! One of the greatest sak/mt combos imo

Great contributions and uses so far.

Nice job so far, guys. Stay with it! :tu:
Douglas, I think your experience open specific tools will improve with time and practice. Might be a good idea to put a drop of oil on the pivots and work them in. I think that helped me with mine. :tu:

Well Guys I have to hang my head with shame.

I LOST my Rebar!!

Seriously I did loose it as described above and due to the Fish Hook fiasco and associated ER bill I must drop out of the challenge I started.
I promise to continue to follow and post. I also will provide a better review of my time with and thoughts on the Rebar. It's been a long day and I'm just not up to it now. Great posts guys and PLEASE keep the challenge going despite my short term loss. I will get another Rebar, I just can't do it now.
-
:o :o :o :o :o
Sorry to hear that Douglas ... here's hoping you'll be able to find it soon *crosses fingers*
I think I'll try to complete the challenge. To make postings less monotonous, once I'm back home I might throw in some pics of my other Rebar. This is stock as far as the tool complement goes, although the tools are BO and sit in SS handles.
-
Day 4
The loose cabinet knob detected yesterday was fixed today, along with another one while I was at it - in deference to my recognition of the likelihood that this might cause a slight attack of boredom, I'll spare you lot a second, perfectly mirror-symmetric picture ;)
-
OH poor Rebar! :o :ahhh
best luck in finding you Rebar Doug! :tu: :salute:
-
Day 5
A loose thread end on my shorts caught my eye this morning. Never travel without scissors, is my motto, and my only scissors on this trip are on the Rebar VX. Of course one could use the main blade for this, but scissors provide a more precise and clean cut for thin threads (unless you use the nightstand for a cutting board >:D).
-
Sorry to hear this Doug  I really do hope you find it and sorry to hear that the hook fiasco turned into an ER visit  Best of luck buddy :salute: :tu:
and great pics DT :tu: We are still rooting for you and hope that the challenge goes well for you :tu: :like:
-
Dang, Douglas!
Sorry for your troubles, brother. Hope things settle out and a new, awlsome, Rebar makes it's way into your pocket soon!
Best wishes,
-
Howdy folks!
Just wanted to chime in here to share my love for the REBAR. It has been my go to since last December or so exclusively. It’s just a damn fine tool that has what I require although I feel they could have done better on the file. Perhaps on future versions.
-
Well said, Sawman. :tu:
-
sawman,
Just out of curiosity, what about the Rebar file bugs you?
I personally find it overly aggressive, much like the newer Vic files. Some people really like aggressive files, but I find them hard to use sometimes, because the sharpness of the cutting lends it to walk astray every now and then. MT files are too small for aggressive filing. IMO The slot cut-out is limiting as well. It wasn't even necessary. IMO as well.

I think you summed it up quite well. I think something closer to the PST 2 IIRC would suit more purposes :tu:
-
Thank you, sawman!
The PST2 file is one of my favorites too.
-
Jogging my memory of the good ole days when there were more Charges to choose from....
Makes me so wish LM would get back to more variety on some of their other tools as well. Knifeless REBAR is great but there are unlimited configurations they could be offering.
Who wants to see a Wave+ with the 3D Phillips and flat drivers like the original? Or at least make availalable more long bits like the MUT :salute:
Hmmmmm
-
Unfortunately I never got the chance to try out the file. I did at least check it out and I think I would have liked the agressivness of it but I also realy like the diamond file side on the Wave and Surge. I do agree that I don't think I would have liked the slot in it at all. During the time I got to use mine befor loosing it I really liked the pliars agressive bite and how wide an opening they have. I also liked the shape and robustness of the phillips.
-
Douglas,
I feel your pain in losing your Rebar. I just lost a Buck knife I JUST bought, the first day I carried it. Not life changing, but sucks nonetheless. :ahhh
Sawman,
I wish LM (or someone) would make a "build an MT program". I would pay extra for a fully customized tool from the factory that was warranted.
-
+1 +1 +1 +1................................................................ :salute:
-
+1 +1 +1 +1................................................................ :salute:
+1... fully agreed. Although Loki does his best to provide original parts, so tool transplants are at least possible without involving (sacrificing) another tool.
As to the file, I had better experiences with the Wave one so I transplanted one of those into the Rebar VX. The single-cut side of the Rebar file is difficult to steer.
-
Day 6
On the way home and waiting for the ferry.
No, I'm not driving that big rig balancing on the pliers :D
-
Looks warm there......
Nice Rebar!
-
I failed on this challenge.   I thought I had a Rebar but it was a camo blast instead. Could have swore I had a Rebar.
-
Could you do the discontinued model challenge? If you haven't done it already. :)
-
Well Pacu,
At least you didn't loose yours between the drive way and the bedroom.
Honestly I think mine got left under the hood of my son's truck when we were working on his lights and fell out some where between our place and his when he drove home.
We'll give it another go Pacu when we both have Rebars. At least here, we can both get a preview of what to expect. :tu:
-
Day 7
Back home and a little tired of yesterday's drive (German motorways allow for fast travel between the occasional snarls but are tiring). Record of longest stretch of uninterrupted summer days about to be broken in the country where the trip started, Denmark.
So, for the moment, a steam punk shot... maybe more to come today, but not sure.
-
Day 7 cont'd
Well, what do you know... yesterday on the ferry I thought I'd lost my watch (the one I got from my wife for my 40th). While unpacking after the drive I heard a sound and traced it to where said watch had fallen between two suitcases. The pin holding the wristband to the watch had bent and lost hold. I'm happy I found that watch again :ahhh
Bending the pin straight was no problem even with the Rebar. I compared it with the SOG PAD - its compound leverage pliers allow the user to apply a lot of force, which in this case however proved a tad too much as the pin's outer sleeve is of relatively thin-walled construction and was crushed a little, thus blocking the inner studs. Had to apply some force at 90° offset to release the inner studs and let the spring do its job again. Here, with the Rebar pliers it is much easier to dose the force to just the amount required, at the cost of maximum applicable force of course.
Then I used my Rebar VX's non-standard jeweler's screwdriver to re-insert the pin, lodged in the wristband, into its receiving holes in the watch housing. I'm glad I added this often derided tool :D
-
D_T. Those spring bars never act right after they've been bent and straightened. Learned that from experience. I would definitely, as a watch guy, recommend purchasing a cheap assorted spring bar kit. I have seen them as low as a few dollars before and you get a lot of different sized spring bars.
If you notice the band not seeming to feel snug between the case lugs, then the repaired spring bar is close to coming out. And that never ends well for you or the watch. :ahhh
-
Thanks GLBM, I'll shop around for the assortment you mention. On superficial inspection though, the ends seemed springy enough and I have made sure they were well inserted in the holes - no problem so far one day after the repair ;)
-
Meanwhile, on Day 8, a short Sunday morning bike tour to get the pump up to revs again after some admittedly lazy days
The Rebar did not see any action, except for posing, to which it seems to be taking a liking :D

Update: Have been faithfully carrying the Rebar everyday. Here's a pic of me using it to attach a new bicycle seat.
-
Why do people love the Rebar? Maybe some people love rusty tools?
-
Rusty? What rust? Mine don't (yet)... ???
-
I've seen little surface spots on some of the tools with the Rebar, but that has never caused any problems with usage. A little cleaning and oiling every now and then is a good thing. Even Swisstools become useless without cleaning (the tolerances are so tight that dust, lint, and dirt cause the tools to be difficult of almost impossible to open).
Maybe Singh doesn't keep his Rebar clean? :pok:

What's with the drive by cheap shot :twak: :twak: :twak:
-
Why do people love the Rebar? Maybe some people love rusty tools?
If stainless rusts, the owner is not taking care of the tools.
My rebar, ST3, Wave and Surge have all been used in the rain and just wiped down later that day and light oi applied, not any rust ever. So very confused by comment unless using in and near salt water. That stuff is cruel.
-
If my Rebar gets rusty I just soak it in WD-40 and clean with a brass bristle brush. :tu: I think people love it because it runs cheaper than most MTs (50-60 usd) without cutting corners on QC, plus it has that classic look like the PST. Just think of it as a PST3. Plus Replaceable Cutters (which btw work better than a lot of regular wire cutters) 8)
-
In the short time I had mine I have to admit to being impressed by how wide the pliars opened up. The only MT I have that opens wider is my Surge. The cutters didn't do well on small copper stranded wire but when it counted they did do a good job on cutting the fish hook from my finger although they suffered some damage in the process. I was able to file it down so the pliars opened smootly again. Of corse I would have replaced them in time and that is a nice option.
Never saw any sign of rust.

I think the Rebar's cutters are better for bigger stronger things you need to cut. Zip ties, hard wire, I cut some small fishing hooks up with it. The replaceable cutters on the Rebar are the only ones I've seen eat through a seal on a semi trailer in one bite. It's almost like having a full on pair sidecuts!

Day 9
Near the end of the first third of this - a little bit challenged - challenge, I present a shot of two Rebars for the price of one.

Rebar Chess  you'd need 32 LMs - Micras as pawns etc. :D
Day 10
After a recent, not too emboldening experience with the sheath that comes with the SOG Power Access Deluxe, it is now time to extol the largely unsung virtues of the sheath that came with the (BO part of the) Rebar VX, although I bought this one used, so no idea if it is stock.
The LM sheath features a velcro fastener worthy of the name, Molle attachment and an internal separate nylon pocket into which one can wriggle an entire bit set (nice for the bit driver I incorporated in the Rebar VX), while still leaving enough space for the Rebar. I still need to experiment with storing a bit driver extender though.
Less bulk could be achieved by storing the bit set in a separate pouch, of course, at the cost of space as measured along the belt ;)
-
Nice ones DT :dd: :like: I have the molle sheath with the bigger grommet and I have been using it for close to a year now and except for adding a snap it is holding up very well :tu: :like: :like:
-
Nice set up there D_T. I really like your VX mods, they seem to step up the Rebar to a new level.
-
Thanks gentlemen
Yup, I'm pretty happy with how the VX has turned out. I might need to trim down the thickness of one tool in one handle a little - the hold of the pivot in its holes in that handle is a little bit marginal, although in practice this doesn't show yet. Otherwise, it packs a lot of punch for its size.
Day 11
None of the above would have been possible without a good basis in the original Rebar. Arguably this is the current LM offering that comes closest to the original PST, in construction, size and intent. I invite all to take a look below, where I show off the VX's counterpart in colour, that has the original tool loadout (albeit in BO here). LM even managed to recreate the feel of the PST's original sheath, although they did change the material from real leather to synthetic (pity, that). The sheath looks and feels solid enough, but the tool rattles slightly, and of course the sheath's form factor and choice of material makes it bulkier than strictly necessary for the Rebar.
-
Yes I do prefer the old school leather sheaths :salute: Excellent pics today of the SS on BO :dd: :like: :like:
-
Or is this BO on SS  ??? :ahhh
:D

Dunno, I get confused myself at times :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh but thanks

Is it the handle with the bit holder, and if so what have you thought about trimming down. How about some close ups of the issue while you're at it.
Or is this BO on SS  ??? :ahhh
:D
I don't know either but I :like: it. :tu: :tu:
-
Thanks! Well, it's not actually an issue in practice. Also, I can't show you without taking the thing apart, if even then (the pivot is just a little bit too short to accommodate all the tools and still fully extend into the holes in the handle in locking engagement with the latter - the engagement is only partial). It's in the handle opposite the large bit holder - see pic. I have thought of thinning the awl and/or the large screwdriver. Probably only the awl, by a tenth mm or so - that shouldn't impair its function.

Day 12
Comparing sizes today. Size does matter, after all, if not always in the way you think when reading this first line :D
Pitting the Rebar against the ST300 is somewhat akin to comparing a mouse and an elephant. However, for all its relatively diminutive size, the Rebar already in its original version comprises all essential tools in a relatively compact, pocketable package. (I have been known to pocket a Rebar. This is not possible with an ST300, unless you wear cargo pants/shorts or dungarees, which I avoid at the office).

The last pic shows how the sheathed ST300 is comparable in bulk to the sheathed Rebar WITH bit set. Goes to show how compact a Rebar is.

l had this issue as well and it was bugging me. l solved it by replacing the pivot with a longer one from a Fuse - it's about 1 mm longer and allowed me to use the anti clump washers between all the tools.
-
Thanks george1, that is a tip I might be following up :tu:
-
Thanks for the photos D_T it helps to see how the mod works and a great size comparison. george1 sounds like the perfect solution to D_T's issue.

Great pics DT the close ups are great :like: and yes like the 2nd sheath in the pic :tu: I have been known to pocket a Supertool :o :D

Now. One last thing. May I join you guys in the Rebar challenge?
I have the Breezy custom ReWave. It may not qualify as a "real" Rebar, but it could work for the modded tool challenge badge. :)
-
I'm good with it, has a lot of the same features as D_T's VX.
Between the two of you I think I will have to Mod one myself.
What say you, D_T?
-
Of couse, nice you can join us GLBM :tu: and thank you for helping Douglas out with his loss :2tu::cheers:
My VX is modded too but I have it on good authority ;) (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77578.msg1708769.html#msg1708769) that I can participate nonetheless. I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to, particularly after you got this challenge back on track :salute:
(I also have the other one, which has made a few appearances and is stock as far as tool complement goes.)
Expectations are high though :D

Day 13
Rebar VX somewhere on today's commuter vehicle of choice. Compact size helps here as well...

Great to see that this challenge just got some help :like: Stuff like this is what makes me love :MTO: 8)

Excellent outcome to the challenge and your "Situation" Doug!!
GLBM my biggest :hatsoff: to you, and you made me laugh hard with that engraving :like: , you sure are a talented customiser :D
IMO you can obviously join and do the Challenge :salute: as long as it reads "Rebar" o the handle, and it's not written by you with an engraver

What's with the drive by cheap shot :twak: :twak: :twak:
I pine for the days when LM steel held up better. I have an old original Supertool old that's seen hard use; left out in the rain, stored in damp garages, rarely oiled..and not a speck or rust on it. If the rebar had that same quality, I would love it.

But, here is today's EDC.

Okay, going on week 3 of carrying the Rebar. Here it is next to my brave Commander :salute:
P.S Do we have to check in daily to get the merit badge?

I would have mentioned it if I had known. I figured you were just keeping tabs. I can be dense at times.
Welcome to the Rebar challenge, Matt!

Tomorrow's EDC. Well. Everything except the glasses. My real glasses are much thicker. :D

Driver fits realy well, but I did feel a slight twist to the handles that I'm not used to. Did not seem to actualy twist ant thig as everthing still closes and lines up the same .
Very nice pic Douglas :tu:
I assume you did up all these screws with the Rebar?
Just kidding :D - that twist, I think it's not unexpected given the open U cross-section of the handles, except at the lock ends of course where the bridge between the sides is missing. This will flex a little bit as the pivots are only lodged in the handles by what amounts to the 2x the thickness of the sheet from which the handles are pressed, plus the slight give of the handles themselves. Unless you really overdo it, I'd think this should not cause any permanent damage under normal circumstances.
-
Day 16
It would be nice if, in the course of this challenge, we could pay some attention to secret features of the Rebar.
One such hidden feature is a cap lifter which effectively (by accident, or design, no one knows) has found its way into the Rebar handles. I've already demonstrated its use a few days ago (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77578.msg1729467.html#msg1729467), and will follow up here with detailed instructions (just in case the use was not clear).
The indent on one side of each handle has an edge pointing inwards which can be hooked behind the edge of a bottle cap, and the opposing edge of the handle can then be rested against the top of the cap. You can use this as follows: e.g. by first folding out the opposing handle to 90° as shown below, then extracting all the tools from the handle that is going to contact the cap at least to the extent also shown below (more is safer!), then hooking that handle's indent behind the cap's edge, placing the opposing edge of that handle on top of the cap, keeping the handle on the cap by using e.g. the left thumb, holding the opposing handle firmly e.g. with the right hand, then using it to apply torque to the other handle, thereby twisting the cap off.
The manifest usefulness of this tool has apparently been recognised by Leatherman, since they went to the lengths of providing redundancy by including not one, but TWO cap lifters in every single Rebar :tu: :D
However, the tool appears to have been designed without keeping lefties in mind, since both cap lifters work best when using the right hand to apply torque :-\.
There is one downside and caveat: you need to extract all the tools from the handle you are using to contact and lift the cap. These tools usually include blades, so be careful when applying the method by keeping your hands, other body parts and/or sensitive objects out of reach of said blades for their full expected extent of swing :ahhh
Looking forward to finding out about other secret features!
PS - don't mind the non-standard file on this Rebar. This has been purloined from the Wave tool set and duly adapted to fit the Rebar along the lines applicable to the first modded file described here (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,74592.msg1583248.html#msg1583248).

Great pics guys :like: and welcome to the Rebar challenge Matt :salute: :like:

Day 7
Starting off with a simple switch change out. The pliars are great as are the cutters but just like the Surge the stripper is lacking

Nice one, Douglas! :like:

Day 1
Here's my EDC for the day. Handy Rebar, the sturdy pioneer X (with a chain I added), and the nifty Thrunite Ti3 :tu:

Look'n good Matt :like:

Nice setup, Matt!
I love the scissors on the Pioneer X. Every MT with scissors should have those exact scissors. :)
Nice addition to the Rebar. :tu:
-
Thanks GLBM, you're right as far as scissors go,Victorinox can't be beat. Plus you get the better awl and stout knife blade that accompanies the scissors on the Pioneer X
-
Excellent challenge so far, guys! :tu: :multi:

Went outside to sit for a few minutes and a weld failed on my favorite chair.
The welding kit is at my Dad's house right now, but I didn't want to risk damaging my chair more by trying to sit in it with the back coming off. Quickly drilled a hole, filed the burr with the Rebar, cut some bailing wire with the Rebar, and tied the broke place up with the Rebar; as a temporary measure, until I can weld it. :)
Pics 1, 2, & 3

Last pics. 4, 5, & 6. That will work for now. :)

That's what MTs are for - good job GLBM :2tu: :multi:
-
Indeed! Thank you! :salute:
I must say that the file on the Rebar is very aggressive, but I am getting used to using it properly. Quite a contrast to the PAD in our last challenge. :ahhh
-
The great thing about MTs is when something breaks you relish the moment of using your tool to fix it. Well done GLBM :tu:
-
That is so true and Thank you, Matt!

Nice fix, G-man. :tu:

In contrast, a slow Day 17 for me, as regards use. Hence, a posing shot only today.

Nice

Thanks guys :salute:

Day 2
Carrying it along side my fieldmaster today. A little redundant but I'm feeling nostalgic. :) The Rebar was first Leatherman and the Fieldmaster was my first victorinox :dd:
-
Very nice, D_T and Matt! :like:
-
Kicking off the day I've already used the straight part of the serrated blade as a razor blade to cut open the packaging on my electric toothbrush :D
-
So, Matt, you're just going to 'cut and paste' your challenge post today? :D
-
So, Matt, you're just going to 'cut and paste' your challenge post today? :D
Haha good one
-
Day 6:
Was working on a project and thought I'd try the wood saw on one if the pieces I was cutting. I usually only use an MT wood saw on dowels and trim, so this was going to be interesting.
The cut is crappy to put it lightly, but it wasn't the saw's fault. The Rebar saw took it out like a hot knife through butter. I am just out of practice using anything that isn't a power saw. My manual cutting was uneven.
But, the great file on the Rebar easily cleaned up the uneven surface. :)
-
:like:
My handsaw skills are atrocious. Damn power-tools have led to a decline in craftsmanship. But who can resist a nice router?
-
Indeed. Thank you, Nix!
I would be sad about the lack of hand-tool skill these days, but I won't be the one to give up power tools.
-
For the most part I agree about not giving up power tools, but I have had to remove so many over torqued srews and bolts from people mot knowing how or when to use an impact driver that I hardly use one any more myself.
-
Day 8
Working on ovens out of state. Been on the road 14.5 hours alfeady and still 3 to go.

Douglas,
That second pic could be an advertisement image for Leatherman! It kind of personifies the Rebar. IMHO
On a side note: it is awesome that Rebar is getting used like it should be.
-
Rebar is going all tactical tomorrow. :mn:
-
Great uses and pics Douglas and GLBM :like:
Let's see how tactical the Rebar gets to be today...
Day 18 started with what may be my last wiper blade swap on this particular car. Have you ever wondered why these supposedly easily unclippable blades always manage to break a fingernail or two? Not an issue with the fixed large screwdriver blade on the Rebar, which I retained on the VX.
-
Great pics and uses in this thread guys  The Rebar is an aweoms tool and I am glad to see these get used :like: :like:
-
Thank you, D_T and Poncho!
And D_T,
You make a good point about those plastic wiper clips. Mine are different, but the sunlight makes the plastic less malleable or sure.
I can see broken fingernails happening. But, that's why we have our Rebars! :viking:
-
Day 8:
Found an old dremel in a box of stuff. The variable resistor speed controller was bad and that is more costly than a new dremel. :ahhh
Saved the good cord off of it though. :)
-
Good stuff GLBM :tu:. My Dremel is around that age and still works fine :D
-
Day 3
Rebar and Pioneer X again. The Rebar hasn't seen much use, but I used the knife blade on my SAK to cut open boxes and a few letters, and the scissors cut some thread.
-
MattGyver,
I think you are doing the wrong challenge. :pok:
Carry on!
-
Matt,
Did you get my PM? I challenged you to a pocket dump(thread link was included). :pok: :D
No big deal. It is too late to accept the pocket dump challenge now, but maybe next time. If that is O.K.? :)
I know this Rebar challenge is a bit 'off the cuff', but I would have used the Rebar blade instead of the SAK blade(I hope that doesn't come off as preachy). Just because of the challenge(makes a good photo). Nothing wrong with the SAK blade, but that Rebar needs some photo-cardio. :tu:
-
Day 9
I'm not a great fan of SE blades but the Rebar's cut through this reinforced drain line beautifully and the Phillips made easy work of changing the fan on this juice dispensor. :tu: :tu: I also had occasion to use the file to remove some burrs on a stainless steal filter assembly and it worked wonderfully. :tu: :tu: The file is very agressive so it takes a lighter touch than with a Vic file, I kinda like it too. :tu: Sorry no photo on that one. G-Man the "break-in" on the tools is perfect and they deploy for use very smootly. :salute: :salute: I often use the tools more than the pliars and need to swap between tools several times on the same job so having to open the pliars every time has been a real challenge for me. :ahhh :ahhh I am so accoustomed to out side tools on my Swisstools I occasionaly have to bite my tongue in front of customers.  Maybe it's just hard to teach an old Doug new tricks...

Alright, alright. You got me! I had the Rebar on my belt but both times out of instinct I reached for my pocket knife. Don't worry the Rebar is getting a workout tomorrow! And GLBM I just looked at the message but I didn't see a link  I'll go look again

We'll do a pocket dump challenge again, at some point.
I know what ya mean. I constantly reach for a knife or tool that I isn't part of a challenge. But, changing the pocket they reside in helps to reduce using the non-challenge tool. :)

Day 4
Today's plan is to carry the Wenger to the car and leave it in the center console unless I desperately need scissors. I'll behave....

Just saying... you could put scissors in the Rebar
-
Just saying... you could put scissors in the Rebar
True, true..🤔 But I don't really have the work space to do a mod right now. Really need to put a workbench in the garage..
-
If you haven't gotten a set yet, check out "Loki-Mobile" for a set of parse wrenches. Once you break down a Leatherman, it ets easier te next time. :)
Day 9:
Stapler jam. Used the can opener to get the bent staple out. :)
-
Two-part post. 1/2
Decided to use the Rebar as my only tool for an insert removal, fill-in with dowel, and cutting/filing the dowel. Only other tool used was a power drill for the hole.
The Rebar is definitely more capable than I had originally given it credit for. The saw and file are really good. :)

Thank you, LoopCutter!
I will take a photo tomorrow. But, I drilled fresh 3/8" holes(slightly offset from the dowels) and put in new insert sockets. I wire wheeled the original wheels metal frames and oiled the bearing swivels/axels. Rolls like a Rolls Royce now. :)
I am not 100% sure, but I believe those are the original wheels. The wheels are extremely well made, but the socket holes were wallowed out and the inserts damaged. My guess is that something very heavy(CRT TV maybe?) was sitting on the table and rolled around often. The joints were coming apart as well. I'll have to post a photo, because it is one of those mid-century double-leaf tables with storage for four matching folding-chairs inside. It did have spider webs, roach pills, car fur, and decades of cigarette smoke all over it, so the cleanup has been/should still be fun. ::)
Good work there G-Man. :salute:

Thank you, Douglas!
Nice macro shot there! That plier head is the only thing I wish my ReWave still had. The new-style jaws just feel more robust. :)
I like the Wave pliers, but they will twist a lot easier than the Rebar pliers. :ahhh
-
I tightened a loose knob in the kitchen
-
So, you are saying, you screwed it up? :like:
Good use!
-
Great uses GLBM, Douglas and Matt :tu:
For the moment it's looking as if I won't be using the Rebar much today (office duty) but on Day 20 I can sing a few more praises on the excellent pocketability of the Rebar. On a fair number of my trousers even the fifth (change/lighter) pocket is deep enough to contain the Rebar, with only minimal exposure, just enough to grab it. If you want however, there is more than enough space in any other pocket of a standard pair of trousers - although a residual risk of being asked questions cannot be excluded if the front pockets are used. A caddy might come in handy if you want to avoid the long-term effects of the edges of the tool wearing through the cloth, though.
One further word of caution: it seems as if one of the seams on the rim of that pocket is coming loose  - not sure it's the Rebar's fault, but...
-
Nice pic, D_T!
That edge looks like it has pocket clip wear.
-
Thanks! Hmm... not using pocket clips on any of my tools... maybe a car key fob, I have one with sharpish edges (I wonder if I can take that onto a plane and no, it's not a Shard or other multitool ).
-
Day 5
The Rebar is daydreaming about a sunnier day.. :dd:
-
Nice pic, Matt! :like:
Day 10:
Used the ReWave to remove a bunch of wood screws. Power drill kept stripping the screw heads out. The inside tools work very well in a folded out position. I don't even close the handles anymore when using the implements. :tu:
Second pic is of the new caster socket in the new hole and the caster with the metal cleaned. Just a follow-up to LoopCutter's inquiry. :)

Just did some more simple wire work again today (unable to get a picture) untill I got home.

Good carry DT,
Great work on that castor G-Man, and
Good phot op Matt. As to the sunnier day, I would send you some of our 108 F days if I could.

How is the humidity where you're at, Douglas? The heat and humidity here have been grueling at best. And everything I clear coat is trying to do an inpression of orange peel. I'm going through #0000 steel wool like crazy fixing it.

Normaly it would be around 10 to 20% this time of year, but this yaer we've been between 60 to 100%. It's been nasty to say te least.

+1 on what Douglas said, Matt!
Hope you feel better in the morning! :salute:
Rebar got involved in a fantastic mess trying to swap out pressure cylinder door mechanisms. Got it changed out, but the original has been there 50 years before I got to it.
Not pictured is the removal process. But, that required bigger tools and two hands. :ahhh
-
GLBM, yup, whether by accident or design the handles work well as cap lifters :tu:.
I've never been able to use the can opener as cap lifter, the design is just wrong for that as the curly bit doesn't manage to hook under the cap. Nice use above too!
Get better soon Matt
Meanwhile we are having a wet Day 22 down here, like yesterday. Water was welcome after an unusually dry summer so far.

I've never been able to use the can opener as cap lifter, the design is just wrong for that as the curly bit doesn't manage to hook under the cap...
I hereby solemnly withdraw this statement. The last brew I opened was in fact a successful deployment of the can opener as a bottle opener. Alas, documentary evidence in pictorial format does not exist, as I was too surprised it worked. The curly bit of the can opener can (pun intended) be inserted under a protruding portion of a cap edge, although this has to be done with some care as one needs to hit the exact spot; but then things go smoothly
-
DAY 13
Did a little wood work with the Rebar and a couple of old Hand me Down reliables, then gave the Rebar file a work out on the ax head. The crosscut side of the file is very agressive and works realy well, while the single cut side...Well it's just not cut for that. The wood saw on the other had is a real "cut above" all but Vic wood saws and I would say the are both true "Cut Ups" that just can't be beat. The saw, file and knife blades do suffer in my opinion from the blade facing the center of the tool when properly closed, this tendes to shorten the effetive work area of the chosen tool. Outside opening is a real plus for these tools in particular on the Wave, Surge, Swisstool etc...

Awl true, Douglas. But the handles can be opened to allow better access and simulate outside opening tools.

Okay Guys I did recognise the tools can be used in that fassion, but one would have better and safer control over the open blade with the butterfly handles closed as they are intended.
Not to say that I have never used the screwdrivers that way because I have, :twak: heck I've even been cought using the1/2 open position like a "T" handle for a little extra torque. I didn't think that out loud, did I?
-
Nice D_T and Douglas!
Hehe. Properly closed. :D
I don't think I've used an inboard tool like that since I first started using butterfly tools. I had been using my pinchy so long, that I was amazed by NOT having to close the handles on inboard-tool MTs.
Shoot. I even use the SwissTools with one handle opened back. I like having the handle of the tool I am using not being twice as thick as it needs to be. :)
In fact, trying to fiddle with using the blades with a handle end in the way would seem a bit more dangerous. It really isn't an issue with the LMs for me. Gerber and SOG would seem more dangerous with not putting the handles back into starting position. :)
And when the handle is folded back on the Rebar, the light weight makes it a pleasure to use that way. It isn't so fun on the supertool 300. :ahhh

Day 7

PS thanks everyone for the kind words I have been battling a sinus infection, but I'm feeling better now. :tu:

The curly bit of the can opener can (pun intended) be inserted under a protruding portion of a cap edge, although this has to be done with some care as one needs to hit the exact spot; but then things go smoothly

DAY 14
The PE blade made quick work play of this box.

Looks so sharp that, for a moment, I thought I might get a paper-cut!
:tu:

Careful, Douglas and Nix. The Rebar blade will leave more than a paper cut. :ahhh
I could open the cut and see through the cortical bone layer, of the right-index proximal phalange, where the edge cut into it(not too bad though). :ahhh
Don't even ask. It is too embarrassing.

Just glad you weren't SERIOUSLY injured.
Looks like it should heal quickly. :tu:

Day 8 :tu:

:o :o
Ouch GLBM, I'm sure you disinfected it well, although from your description it seemed deeper than it now looks in the pic. That should heal OK - PE blade I take it?
Meanwhile Day 24 illustrates a reason why I added scissors to the Rebar VX. Loose thread on the shirt where the sleeve meets the rest, at the back of the shoulder - awkward to reach and impossible to cut with a blade as one can only use one hand there - short of taking the shirt off, that is

Indeed, hydrogen peroxide, triple-antibiotic ointment, rubbing alcohol to clean around it. Then a bunch of bandages and tape to keep germs out.
Nice use on the VX! The ReWave scissors have been a welcomed addition to the ReWave as well.

yeah I got cut by the Rebars PE blade before. Ouch, they put a good factory edge on them that's all I can say
-
They really do, Matt!
Every Leatherman I own, that wasn't previously used, came wicked sharp. That is always appreciated from an MT company. :)
-
In a different thread, Zoidberg opined that the Rebar's PE blade seems a bit flimsy and prone to being bent (and not just by a brute like myself, I think).
Since you guys are in the midst of a Rebar challenge, any thoughts about the Rebar's blade, aside from it's willingness to bite?
-
I don't think, considering the size/light weight of the Rebar, the blade is "flimsy".
Newer LM blades don't bend. They snap.
I haven't read anything that indicates the Rebar blade is a problem. :tu:
The Rebar blade is the same thickness of the blade on the PL you were using.

I've not had any issues with the blade itself, just with getting it out and putting it away.
The blade has a great shape and matching quality edge. It seems to hold the edge well and when a touch up is needed it's easiy done.
To me the blade itself is one of the Rebar's best features.

Day 25
Rebars standing guard over my cappuccino. Heavens forbid anything should happen to it, that'd ruin my day ;)
-
I wouldn't really call the blade on the Rebar flimsy at all :ahhh
The Reactor's blade is flimsy, the Squirt's blade is flimsy, the Gerber Crucial blade is flimsy, as is the one in other tools and brands, but not this one.
To me flimsy (in a blade) means that either:
a. It is long and can be easily bent, broken, or snapped off because of its length, thickness and/or flexibility
b. It is small sized, almost minuscule, and barely cuts in depth and width, such as the Micra, Classic, Style or Dime blade (but this second definition is more "puny" or "tiny" than "flimsy" I would say)
-
I tend to agree with all those that do not call the Rebar blades "flimsy". Very sharp on the factory grind and sturdy for their size, which couldn't be any larger without compromising the size of the package they come in (i.e. the handles). OK, so maybe it isn't a machete, but one can hardly expect that in a 4" multitool.
-
So I'm going to sneak a Rebar shot in here.
I can see why there may be questions about the knife blade. The hollow grind makes the edge seem thin and there is an obvious stress riser with the straight plunge line at the ricasso. But I think it has a decently thick spine and has proved to be sturdy enough for routine uses.
I have to say, the lock up on mine is really good and tight. After having completed a Powerlock challenge, this feels like a whole step up in quality.
I love this multi. :multi:
-
Nice photo, Nix! :like:
It is just like people to break the pliers on MTs. You get carried away and forget, "hey, this is an MT, not 14" channel locks".
I try to modulate my MT usage when I can. I've only broken one MT blade (Gerber MP-1 PE) and bent (not broken) three MT plier heads. I was able to repair the bent plier heads to an extent. :ahhh
-
probably the hardest blade to break or bend in a MT that I've seen is that of the MP700,
that is a THICK and STUBBY little pointy thing! :ahhh
OFC, it can't cut a darn thing
-
I'm running late so I have to make this reply quick.

Since you guys are in the midst of a Rebar challenge, any thoughts about the Rebar's blade, aside from it's willingness to bite?
I never used the word flimsy, I said they (both blades, not just the PE) were thin and easily bent.
And the context was someone wanting a multitool to trash.
I don't think, considering the size/light weight of the Rebar, the blade is "flimsy".

I've found that the Rebar blades do bend some.
I've only had them snap after they've been straightened a few times.
-
I can't even get the newer LM blades to bend at all. And I've tried to reduce rubbing by bending them. :ahhh
The old LM blades bend quite nicely. :)

Just making the few hooks I needed wasn't a problem.
I just would not want to cut or bend a lot of hard wire with it because of the "hot spots". :ahhh :ahhh

Removed the screws on an MT drawer and added some glue to the joint. Then put the screws back in.

Nah. Handle folded back is the way. :pok: :D
Seriously, for most cutting tasks I will be using the Rebar with handles closed (as directed) and only use it with the second handle folded back when I need to cut on a flat surface(which should reduce danger by having a surface to cut on). I am not just jousting MTs blades about anymore. I usually learn a lesson the first time around.
Nice photo, by the way, Douglas. And that Boy Scout Alox is awesome. I didn't even know they ever made a Scout Alox. I have a 2003 Boy Scouts Huntsman, but ALOX is a different echelon of quality. :)

The skin is healing well, but I'm still having trouble with extending the finger out, because of the bone gouge. That will be fine though. :)

Day 15:
Friend asked me to change the battery in his Seiko. Rebar made quick work of popping the band-pin out, unscrewing the back, and screwing the back on after battery installed. I have several watch case wrenches, but the MT did a fantastic job on the Seiko case back. :)
Note: time is set now, but forgot to set date for photo..haha
-
While out of town at Danni's family reunion the Rebar had a little reunion of it's own.
We were perusing pawn shops and a Wingman came down from the clouds for under $10 and was reunited with it's cousin Rebar.
-
Seems the pic didn't work that way so here is this.
-
I can't see the photo, Douglas. :ahhh
Congratulations on the Wingman. $10 is a great price for it. I paid $20 each(new on sale) for the ones I bought and felt they were worth every penny of that. The scissors feel a little flimsy, and inside tools don't lock, but for an average $30, it is hard to beat, especially being U.S.A made and polished. :)
P.S. make sure to oil treat the insides, tools, and plier head. The steel is strong, but has a tendancy to spot up without an oil treatment.
Edit: thanks for fixing the link! Looks like it is in good condition! :tu:

Getting close to the end of the challenge. Rebar VX was busy today. The bad news is that I read your post too late and didn't save up any for you - and we couldn't resist, it was simply too delicious lo leave anything for the next day or so... :-\

Day 30 - Challenge Completion Post
I have decided to end this challenge with a final mod report on the Rebar VX.
Remember my slight complaint (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77578.msg1727951.html#msg1727951) on Day 11 (see also here (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77578.msg1728616.html#msg1728616))? I've followed up on george1's advice (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77578.msg1728732.html#msg1728732) (thanks again :tu:) and sourced a few Fuse pivots from our man in Russia. Only late yesterday night I came around to do the install, which went very smoothly (used a 4mm Allen key to push out the old pivot, then inserted the old pivot from the other side while wriggling and abutting the Allen key until this fell out, and then inserted the new pivot from the now vacated side, all of this to avoid having to realign the tools and all the washers inbetween. This worked fine).
In the shot below you'll not see the results, but trust me >:D. I have added a spare Fuse pivot and the old Rebar pivot for comparison. According to our man in Russia (see his reference table below) the Fuse pivot is 14.1 mm between heads (when fully screwed on) compared with the about 13.1 mm I measure for the Rebar - this mm extra managed to make the pivot's flat sides fully engage the complementary surfaces of the handle holes, even despite the wider tools, so I'm happy :ahhh :D
loki-mobile's reference table (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,64314.msg1414187.html#msg1414187)
This ends the challenge for me - but I'm going to be checking in regularly with you guys to, ahem, monitor progress :D and to cheer you on should this unexpectedly prove necessary :like: :like: :like: Thanks to all participants for joining in and the others for the cheers  - this was fun :drink:
Other loose threads from this thread (pun intentional :D):
Bent watch spring pin, see Day 7 (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77578.msg1725705.html#msg1725705): on GLBM's advice I have bought a set of assorted spring pins of uncertain origin (probably Chinese) and replaced the bent-and-repaired one with a new one. For good measure, I also did the other one as the remaining original pin looked a bit iffy as well. Despite the uncertain origins and to my mind incredibly low price (€5 with shipping, anyone?) these pins seem very solid indeed and the watch has been sitting on my arm unscathed since I did the swap (at least during daytime). No pics of the swap, alas.

DAY 20
So to be honest this has been my go to when I've NEEDED scissors. The all so compact but mighty COMPACT. It really makes a great little companion to the Rebar. Especially with the pocket clip and pull tab.

-
:salute: Douglas!
Nice one with the compact. That is one of the SAKs I really need to get! Seems like it would definitely complement the Rebar quite well. :)
Nice photos as well, Douglas! :like:
-
Rebar carried along with a Compact makes total sense.
Truth is, except for challenges, I never carry a pliers-based multitool like the Rebar without also carrying a pocket knife of some kind. Sure the blade on a multitool can be as useful as any knife blade, but it usually easier and less dramatic to pull out a pocket knife to take care of those little things we all use a knife for during the course of the day.
And that pocket knife might not be anything more than a Classic. Right there I've got a handy cutter and some fine scissors. Although lately I've been leaning toward a Wenger Esquire or Vic Ambassador.
But a Compact?
Oh, heck yes!
-
The Compact rely is quite the little power house and with this clip/ pull it just disapears in the corner of the pocket but it's allways ready for action with a quick pull of the "pull". It will even get you off the "hook" when you got out of the house without your pen.

One conclusion for me is that the Rebar is a very suitable tool for regular carry - pocketable and versatile, especially if combined or modded to make available some everyday tools it omits as stock (such as scissors).
Did anybody mention SAKs?
I don't have a Compact (yet ;)) but I normally (i.e. when not in a specific challenge, that is) do complement whatever I carry as a plier based multitool with a SAK, at the very least a small one in the form of the Mini Champ. I've decided to rotate back to my little EDC pouch at least for a few days, see below. This is Mini in all respects, making for excellent pocketability whilst preparing the carrier for emergencies that might pop up. (Pity the Mini Tool has been discontinued and/or not developed further...)
The Mag SoliLED is not strictly necessary during the summer, but then again, you never know...

Thank you for the observations and inout, D_T! :)
And, anytime is a good time for a MagLite. :)

Worked on a cedar chest for my mother today. It had some blue paint around the inside edges for some reason. Used the blade to scrape what I couldn't get to with the sander and opened my stain cans with the flat driver. Mixed up some stain and it is good as new.
Edit: day 19.
-
Look'n good there G-man,
and great LITTLE EDC set up and thanks for the comments D_T. I really recomend giving the Compact a try. It has a lot to offer.
Now
DAY 21
The Rebar file did a wonderfull job prepping this shelf collar for a reweld. The curved side was really nice when prepping inside the round shape of the collar.

Thanks, Douglas! Nice file usage. :like:
-
+1 and a nice gritty pic too :D
Nice chest GLBM, seems of sturdy quality and I like the grain, I'm sure you'll get it spic and span again. The blue paint may have been for contrast to avoid hitting the edges (?)
-
Thank you, D_T!
I am guessing, at some point, the chest was painted blue and stripped. The bottom has blue chalk-paint runs underneath. Why in the name of all existence, they would hae painted over solid cedar, is beyond me. And why they did a good job stripping it and left some paint aroud the inside rim and under the lid, is nothing short of baffling. :ahhh
-
Several toys came in today in the mail. Used the Rebar plain edge blade to open the packaging. Cool toys. :woohoo:
Day 20:

Fun Haul G-man. :like: :like:
DAY 22
A not so "Gritty" Glamor shot today.
The Bosses have started to move me more out of the field and into the office, so I'm not getting as many good action shot opportunities.
Not so sure I'm very fond of dealing with the computer programs, but I'll get there.

One conclusion for me is that the Rebar is a very suitable tool for regular carry - pocketable and versatile, especially if combined or modded to make available some everyday tools it omits as stock (such as scissors).
I do think the Rebar could benefit from some scissors. In my view, the serrated blade is extraneous. One could delete the serrated blade and the lanyard ring, and replace them with a pair of scissors to make a more versatile tool.
And I'd kinda like to see a small flat driver as well.
But, given it's compact size and overawl ability, the Rebar is a very capable tool in a small package. :tu:
-
Well said Nix. :tu:
After using the Charge for a challenge and off and on sense, I feel the Rebar could also benifit from adding the Bit holder. Although I would not relly want to give up the slim reach of the dedicated phillips.

I went to school for Cisco network engineering. I now get scared thinking about sitting at a computer terminal. I guess I could if need be, but I don't think I'd like it. :ahhh
At least your chances of getting cut and electrocuted are much lower in the office. :)
Good luck transitioning to the office work! :salute:

Nice shot Douglas :tu:
Here's hoping for interesting challenges ahead in your job!
Nice haul GLBM :like: and that all in one package :mail: :ahhh

More great pics guys :dd: I have been neglecting my Rebars lately  Guess I need to carry one of them tomorrow as I already have my carry and been out the door to work for nearly an hour ::) :D
Don't worry though I am riding this morning and not driving :D

Shame on you for neglecting your Rebars. Coming out of the Swisstool and Spirit Challenges and straight to your Rebar is one of the inspirations behind the "Need to Understand" Challenge.
I am glad to here you're getting to ride, and not drive. That's always nice.
Still...

It was three packages. :ahhh
One box and two padded mailers. Box was from ChopperCharles(wrench tool, two coast handyman tools and a hobo knife), large package was a MultiMaster, and small pacage was ToughChip.
I know.
Poncho,
Show that Rebar some love! :pok:

Day: 22.
Used the flat driver to tighten some loose screws on knobs. The flat blade on the Rebar(and found on other LMs) seems well suited for this type of screw. :)

Good stuff G-man. :like:
Spent most of the day in the office again today.
Checking in parts was just another boring solo job for Rebar today.
Then along comes a distant Swiss cousin with a fun challenge. Some freight seemed to need a closer inspection and the metal bands must first be cut.
The two (Rebar and Swiss cousin) teamed up for the job and those bands were just no match for the duo.

True. I considered this too, on the way to my Rebar VX, but decided against it because I'd have to pack yet another item, which in addition is a little bit too bulky for the 2D bits because it had to be sized to also accommodate the normal 1/4" bits...
But this way you'd keep the slimmer fixed Phillips. I put mine in the ReWaveR instead

Taking a watch band off that needs gluing. Will glue it tomorrow. But, the Rebar blade worked nicely to locate and remove the spring bar. :)
-
Good work G-man.
Hows the hand healing?

Good work G-man.
Hows the hand healing?
Thank you, Douglas!
The hand is doing quite alright. Just have to be careful extending it with force, as the bone surface hasn't bonded yet. Strange how such a small entry wound can cause mild bone damage. :ahhh
BTW. Posted your tree climber to the August thread. :like:

Thanks, D_T! :salute:
I wouldn't have used the Rebar blade if I didn't already know the spring bars were new (just put them in a week ago). Now, old corroded spring bars require something dull. :ahhh

Put new band on the Victorinox watch from yesterday's photo. New band gives the watch a 'bigger' look. :)
I used the ReWave pliers to pull frail spring bars out to install bigger bars for my Citizen Solar-Tech. :)

Hey Douglas, nice pics and congratulations on the reason for the extra hole ;)

Not many days left for the challenge guys - keep it going :tu: :ahhh

Great pictures Douglas.
Congratulations on having to use the awl for a new belt hole.
For my part time job at the Y, I do a lot with the chemicals for the 2 pools and spa. The Rebar's stainless finish works real well.
For work I do use a nylon sheath, (molded style that came with a $4 Walmart tool.) The box sheath for home.
Enjoyed reading your adventures as well as DT's. :like: :like: :hatsoff:

Very nice photo, Douglas! :like:
Did you have too much coffee or soda? Photo looks like you were wired when you took it. :D
Day 26:
Fixing one of my old incandescent Maglites. The one I EDC'd for more than 10 years was rebuilt using the guts in the red one(I don't carry non-led anymore, ao not sure why I did that). My OCD has been nudging me to get it back working. Like I need another flashlight.
-
All done and all working. The old incandescent Maglites are still great for up-close work, since the brightness won't blind you. :ahhh
The gold ones are 1988 Olympics gift-bag items. The worn one is the one carried so long. After looking for years, I found one just like it unused for the collection.
The far right is my 111 lumens LED AAA Maglite I use at work. :)

Got anything special planned for your 30th day with the Rebar? :)

Douglas, I agree, that serrated blade is wickedly sharp, I found :tu:
Delving into some old tech GLBM? Nice :D
My, we are getting close to the end of this challenge... I'd love it if you both could prepare something truly spectacular (a use or a pic, preferably both) for the last day post. Together with a full report, of course

Officialy I'ev compleated my challenge, but if it were not for the kind generosity of our friend the G-Man I wouldn't even be posing in this thread tonight so I'm in it for the next two days along side you SIR Gerleatherberman. :salute: :salute:

Awesome pics, Douglas! And awesome you're in for two more days! THANK YOU!
The Rebar looks at home with that precariously positioned nut! One place the Rebar/Signal plier head excels at(fine but strong). IMO
On a side note:
If I had to do it all over again, I'd change one thing. I wouldn't have put the "D" on the plier pivots.
-
Congratulations Douglas on reaching the 30 day mark - don't forget to request the badge
:ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
Gorgeous pics :tu:
One question - I've never seen a setup with a toggle switch being operated by a piece of PVC tube. Inventive, no doubt, but it leaves me curious as to the context. The Rebar pliers in any case are pretty good at that :D
-
Congrats on completing the challenge Douglas... Badge awarded even if your in for 2 additional days... :salute:

Congratulations on your badge Douglas

Thanks for the badge Jaya_man. It's going to be another long non-stop day ending near midnight again so I'll try to find time to update and respond on the purpose of the switch design through out the day.

Great job Douglas for completing the challenge through the adversity you experienced. Congratulations on the badge as well.
Dutch Tooler congrats as well, your devotion to the Rebar kept this place alive :like:

Day 29:
Remove phillips screws from handle on this "explosives" wood box and screwed in some old flat head screws. I'll change the hinge screws out at another time.
Bonus pic of Rebar on a Radio Flyer Wagon. :)

Thanks Nix and Poncho.
G-Man love the Radio Flyer an I understand the flat blade screws are more "Ol' Shool" but WHY would you change a perfectly good phillips?

Day 30: Post 1/3.
In an attempt at acquiring an epic action shot, I bumped the pliers on the high-speed coarse grinding wheel.
Used a finer grinding wheel to even the plier tips flat into a slightly more blunted shape (similar to the Spirit). This actually seems like an improvement in regards to the kind of work I do.
-
Day 30: Post 2/3.
Softened the edges of the tips with three files. Coarse, medium, and fine diamond to finish. Then polished the tips to a mirrot finish on the cloth high-speed buffing wheel.
-
Day 30: Post 3/3.
The Rebar (with wave pliers) has been a faithful companion for 30 days and has not disappointed.
Thanks to Douglas, D_T, and everyone else who participated, as well as everyone who monitored the challenge. It was very interesting, enlightening, and we had some good laughs.
The Rebar is a fine tool, and did everything it was supposed to. I can't say anything that hasn't already been said about it. It is a perfect mid-range multi tool and deserves the "love" that many show towards it. IMO of course. :)
-
:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
Congratulations on finishing the challenge GLBM and again thanks for helping out Douglas with his
I agree with your assessment, a good, compact and not too heavy all-round multitool. Moddable for those that want it to go the extra mile.
Sorry for the slight mishap with the pliers tip but at least it prompted a mod of itself. And thinking about it, the extra contrast might help in locating/positioning the tip in darker environments :tu:
Now, who's left...?

Congrats to those who made it through. Sorry to those who had to deal with fish hooks and what not. :dwts:
Special shout out to gerleatherberman for hooking setting Dougie up with a replacement Rebar. :salute:
Here, have a badge mate.
Thank you, zoidberg! & :hatsoff:
Douglas sure did get hooked on this challenge. :D

Now that everyone has compleated the Challenge I'll lay out my comments. First this has been a very interesting challenge. Several had to drop out before we even got started so it looked like it would just be D_T and I. While warming up to the Rebar for the upcoming challenge 3 days early I literally got hooked while fishing  and had to call on the Rebar to save the day by cutting the treble hook off the lure. Once again at the ER it had to step in and again cut the hook because the hospitle didn't have any side cutters. Then two days in to the actual challenge I lost my Rebar.  Still not sure exactly what happened there. The amazing Dutch_Tooler kept things going all by himself :tu: :tu: untill Gerleatherberman (in true MTo fassion) stepped in and saved the cahllenge by sending me my new surprize :mail: :mail: custom engraved Chained Rebar. So ten day in, the challenge was finally back on track and after his generosity G-Man became a very welcome edition. Alonge the way MTMatt was a welcome participant, I'm not sure exactly what happened but Matt, thanks for your contributions and you were missed. Now to the Rebar itself. All the good stuff has already been said by D_T and G-Man and I must agree. I don't have any thing bad to say about the Rebar it is a very capable carry for the price. I can see why it is a popular choice. I Like the replaceable cutters, (great for cutting fish hooks) the pliar head designe is excelent with a truely wide span. The agressiveness of the file is great, the phillips is stout and well formed to prevent slippage the knife blades hold there edge very well. But for me I have to say I still find the whole insde tools system fiddley and frustrating. It works well and dose protect the tools from collecting pocket lint, and dirt etc... so it has it's advantages I just find it frustrating. One person (myself) finding one feature frustrating dose not in any way prevent me from now understanding "Rebar Love" so mission accomplished. Thanks everyone and special thanks to D_T and G-Man.

I want to get a Rebar now...
Especially after spending a week with my old Leatherman Kick when I was home in Denmark.
Simplicity and ruggedness simply works!

I have seen them under $50 recently(I got one unused in leather sheath on goodwill's ebay page for $30). Don't know if that is the case where you're at, but it is worth having one. :tu:

your hand doing well GLBM? :tu: You need a good strong grip to put the new plier head on your new Wave + to the test!! :ahhh
-
Thank you, TP!
The hand is doing fairly well. Still some pain when extending the index finger, but grip is back to normal.
That Wave challenge is going to be something wild. One of the biggest contestant groups I've seen so far. :ahhh
Are you thinking about getting a Wave and joining?

I'm afraid not, :P the Wave is really not one of my favorites (I know, heresy!! :sa:) and I had three, now I'm down to one, which is used on occasion,
and I am happy with rotating and I love variation, so changing tool, knife and SAK is one of my favorite things of this hobby
I'd also like to try the Wave+ for the sake of trying but if I had the money I'd get a MP800, Center Drive, SOG PowerPint, SOG Powerplay, Poweraccess or PAD before...
But there's already enough participants to make it possibly the biggest 2018 Challenge of this forum! :tu:
-
Understood, TP!
I've actually been wanting to try out the MP800 or Center-Drive, but I keep joining challenges.
Glad you're interested in keeping an eye on the Wave challenge. Your input is alwayd appreciated!
