Title: any beardsmen on this forum
Post by: Weasel on March 14, 2015, 07:14:44 PM
I've wanted to grow an impressive beard go years now and as I've just turned 33
I think I'm old enough now.
Is there any beardsmen here? And if so have you any tips on growing an impressive beard.

Only the manliest of manly men are capable of harnessing the beast of bearddom. If you see  yourself fit to take on the challenge, the steps are simple. Don't shave :D

there has been a previous thread about beards !
and some very impressive images  :o
I myself have had facial fluff for many years
and in the last couple of years i've noticed it's very 'trendy' here in Blight to grow a 'mountaineers' style bushy beard , special amongst the younger chaps ! (at 33 you're probably a bit old ;) )
despite my age I can only manage a goatee, which is going a tad silvery so I'm staring to look like colonel  Sanders :(

It's funny you should say that , my other half says the same but I want a change of appearance .for years I've had stubble and a shaved head , my stubble longer than what's on my head. But I've got a few tattoos and on first appearances most people think I'm a thug till they get to know me but as I've now got 2 young children if like to look friendlier .
Plus I do and always have think beards are cool.

I can grow facial hair quickly and do on occasion grow a full beard (and goatees etc.), usually when I do not need to shave for a while.  Some women like it, some do not and some get used to it..

The main problem with any serious facial hair is the amount of food (mainly bread crumbs) that gets caught in it, which can get annoying.
Also, nowadays, you may look like an ISIS member with a certain type of beard.

If you're already growing a good stubble, then why not simply start with a neck shave?  Stubble quickly becomes a short beard with a little shape.

Preach it Cap!  I've had my beard 7 months now.  Wife hates it, but knows I'm stubborn about it.  Only thing is I've shaved it off every year for our anniversary, but always miss it, and really don't want to this time....

Love that meme too :)

If you are able to grow one then I say go for it.  I wish I could grow one cause I'd look like that dude in the Capts pic   8).

I'm more stubbly than bearded and have not shaven clean for 12 years.  I have beard envy big time.  My younger bro's can grow some wicked beards not sure what happened to me  may have to ask if dad was some other guy .

I've had a beard for over 40 years.  I must have saved an enormous amount of time in not shaving, not to mention no neck rashes etc.   Beards have been in and out of fashion several times while I've had mine, but frankly I couldn't give a smurf about what's "in" or not.

So I say if you want to grow a beard then give it a try. "You'll never ever know if you never ever have a go."

These days I keep it pretty short (#2 on the clippers, so longer than a stubble), but I have grown it "bush-ranger" (Oz version of outlaws) long at times when I was younger and it had a decent amount of colour (brown & red).  Now it is mostly white with a hint of pepper - I guess it faded in the strong Oz sun.

Lol, thanks Higgs....Herley better watch out ;)

One of the reasons my wife hates me bearded is because my hair is practically black, but beard is a mixture of various red and brown.  She just prefers me clean shaven with a "normal" length hair style, and I prefer the opposite :P  Heck, at one time, about 14 years ago, I had long hair and no beard.  She wouldn't have liked that either.

Grow a beard, good fellow!

I've had a beard for about 15 years now, and it was my then girlfriend, now wife, who made me grow it. Tips? Keep it clean and brush it when it gets long. I wear my beard long in winter and short in summer.

I had one during University. My now wife liked it then, but now she says she prefers me shaved.
Use shampoo and be careful during oral sex until it grows. After it grows enough so your facial hair don't feel like nails, it becomes an advantage. But you'll have to use shampoo afterwards. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/03/15/de38e2d27fed7b00b4f5bb871ca8da95.jpg)

After reading the above comment and thinking that I might need to attract women in the future, maybe a beard isn't that smart of an idea.

I may sound like a hopeless romantic, but then again, many cynics are: "Attracting women" is a load of smurf. Yes, some people are more attractive, smarter, more popular, but what we as humans need, is someone who puts up with the unimportant parts of our bullsmurf while not letting us get away with the important. We don't find that person by dressing up as the least common denominator. Just take a shower and be weird, be yourself. Don't compete accepting the other guys' rules, make your own rules when you can, break the other's rules when you must. Just smurfing live!

I didn't mean to get preachy, I just work a place with a lot of single guys. They talk a lot about "women", very little about "getting to know people". Smurf... I feel old.

I believe men and women should let all their body hair grow naturally, as long as they can grow them.  :salute:

A Mediterranean man should never say that.
Sexual dimorphism is a natural phenomenon but cultural also. Some cultures are more sensitive regarding body and facial hair. We see the classical beauty standards set by the ancient Greeks in the wealth of bronze and marble statues. Mature men (Zeus, Poseidon, Philosophers etc) have facial and body hair. Women (Aphrodite, Hera, Athena, Nike, Caryatids, Athenian women on the Parthenon freeze and Niki temple) not. Ancients had wax too.

There are beard shampoos and conditioners and oils.

I've generally only kept the moustache/goatee look, and rarely had more than a week or two's scruff on the rest. A while back I shaved only neckbeard/below my jawline part and part of my cheeks and have kept on trimming but let the rest grow. Suprisingly it eventually got past the steel brush texture that had me shaving everything but the goatee in the first place and now reached a point where it's not annoying me as it was.

Here's a somewhat horrible selfie I took a few weeks ago...

I've had a goatee for the last 18yrs I've tried diff lengths, but last year I grew it as long as I could, along with the sides, and if it was one thing the wife couldn't stand, it was the longer hair, my problem was mine won't grow thick especially on the sides. I found this pic today while the wife and I were going threw the pics on the camera, and for some reason it didn't come out to clear. It looks thick but it really wasn't.

my wife prefers me bearded, so I'll grow a beard during the winter.  IT takes about 4-6 weeks to grow one out.

tips:

Also, get a beard trimmer to maintain it, but you can also go to a good barber and have your beard shaped up professionally.

I usually use a #2 or #3 for trimming my beard, which is only grown for the winter.  I'm starting to get tired of it now to be honest.  I'll keep my goat though.

I can't say I see any problem there? How people tend to their own body is a personal matter as long as it doesn't affect the health of people around them. If you want blue hair and won't lose your job coloring your hair blue (and if you get fired for hair color, I don't like your employer), do it. If your wife likes your beard and it's OK by you, grow one. I think personal choice is a splendid principle for hair growing anywhere on the body, both for shaving and growing. :)

Oh, and a standard note: Men not going down on their woman if she's not shaven downstairs are behaving like boys wanting girls, not men wanting women. :D

(Yes, I feel perfectly comfortable making fun of other people's personal choices even though I stress this is a personal choice. Freedom of expression is a beautiful thing.)

It's like multitools, really. Everybody must figure out what works for themselves, and what their SOs will put up with. :D

Here's another beard fact, you may or may not look like an Orthodox priest.

For more facts, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beard

From 17 to 26 years of age I couldn't stand the sight of me shaved, I felt I looked child-like. I'd shave every month, month and a half. Then I realised my beard made me look like a savage. Man, I need to scan and upload THAT picture of me in my 20s I want to burn and my wife won't let me. Then you'll know why now I shave every two to three days. Funny thing is she loves how I look in that photo -I find it creepy- but she prefers me shaved; even my one-day facial hair can give her a rush. Women... need I say more?

Besides appearance, wearing a beard in the hot greek summer is a sport I am no longer fond of... Plus, I may be getting older (who said that ??) but I don't like this trend of bearded men. It's difficult to explain without a bit of modern greek history so I'll skip that and just state that seeing trendy yuppies wearing suits and beards that make them look like greek independence war fighters or greek civil war rebels is plain ridiculous.

Growing a beard doesn't mean you just stop shaving. You have to make it happen. The least you can do is comb it frequently so you can get an idea of what can be done with that beard of yours and save yourself the itches you're otherwise bound to get. Then, make up your mind whether it looks good on you or not  ;)

Good luck either way :tu:

So it is now acceptable to post pictures of  priests with fake Raiders badges on them?

Why not post some defaced pictures with some figures from other religions  e.g. Muslim then? Lets see what the reaction will be from that.

People are now mocking their own heritage and then wonder why others are defecating on their country and show their nation no respect.

*Ahem* Our Church was against the 1821 Greek Independence War out of fear of losing privilegdes granted by the Ottoman High Porte... Separation of Church and State still hasn't happened here...

Don't get me wrong, I value tradition but I have a lot of defecating of my own to do on my country... I just posted this pic because I thought it was funny. It was just meant to show a beard is mandatory for Orthodox priests.

Let's be careful we don't slide to far into the political discussions here. :police:

You know politics and religion are a no-no here, and both got mentioned it the last few posts.

If you wish to discuss it further take it to PMs, guys. Or that thread where you both write in those funny letters no one else understands. :P

Then just post a regular priest picture without the Raiders marks.
This picture is designed to make fun of  religion. Making fun of that because of what happened in 1821 (by some in the leadership, not all the priests), in 2015 does not seem right.
When a German magazine makes fun of an ancient statue, then, maybe they should be allowed to do so because of what Alexander the Great or some other ancient Greek did to Iran etc.

As I said I doubt anybody would post a picture of a Muslim/Hindu/Jewish etc priest, making fun of him, and expect people to like it and have a laugh.

I will not go on, as I am aware of the no politics/religion discussion rule but I still think that you need to respect your own culture before requesting respect from others.

ENOUGH politics. That's how forums die.

Now, back to the beards. You people suck. I've been compelled to to take the "selfie". This is 5 years, with a little singed off. No, there isn't a hollow in the middle, it's just a trick of the white hair. And I trim it in front of the ears- drives me nuts, and it interferes with earmuffs.

I like the cultural aspects of beards (and also moustaches, sideburns and haircuts). It is a voyage through time to see a live Babylonian, or Greek, or Viking, or Mandarin, or Van Dyke beard.

I just caught up on this thread! Some pretty impressive beards there guys! :tu: personally I don't like wearing a beard, a couple of mm of stubble is how I like it. Like a haven't shaved in a couple of days everyday! As for the ladies, I definitely prefer less!
Title: Re: any beardsmen on this forum
Post by: Aloha on March 19, 2015, 05:24:29 PM
I also am catching up as well.  I love all the epic beards in this thread.  I cannot grow a full thick beard so alas I'm mostly stubble.  I see many younger men here in SoCal growing beards and while very trendy I have no issue with them.

I was surprised to see a few of my daughters high school classmates with beards.  I had almost no facial hair till I hit my 30's .  I'm not a fan of shaving for no other reason than my skin is sensitive and I just don't prefer the process.

I have always been a live an let live sort of guy and so beards, no beards, partial beards, clean shaven, or whatever floats your boat I say go for it.

Ladies do what you will as well, wax, shave, electrolysis. no shave, natural, partially shaven, whatever floats your boat tho I do have a preference in that regard.

Ask a surgeon, he might be able to describe it to you. I've seen it half a dozen of times myself on living people and many more on deceased. My advice: stick with superficial beauty, it is much more appropriate for the general population.

I guess you are not a mechanic. Ask mechanics, they do it all the time. Watchmakers, informatics speSmurfpillsts, engineers, electric appliance speSmurfpillsts, they do it too. SAK moders do it, year around. What surprises you so much? The animal machine and human brain are infinitely more complex and beautiful than that stuff.

I was thinking about how cool it would be to grow as many different beard types as possible, but looks like its already being done.

I've floated the idea of shaving off my beard a few times, but my wife is against the idea.  I've had it so long I suspect she's not sure what I'd look like without it, and is rather worried by what she might see. :-\
Since we're twins, just show her my pic. :tu:

Actually that pair of pics kinda freaked her out. :D  Partly from the vague similarity, but mostly 'cos my odd sense of humour can still catch her off guard. ;)

Thanks for the replys And there's some cool beard pics.
I'm still in two minds  but to me beards are cool I do want to grow one but
My other half dosent have the same idea she hates them

Go for it!!!!

I started growing a beard at about 20 years of age.  I've now been living longer with a beard than without one.  I only shaved it off twice and immediately started growing it again both times.  The first time, I cut half of it off like in the photo above. :D  It's been many years waiting for it to be fashion as it is today.

Also check out cat beards... http://cat-beard.com/

This is at about 22 year old.

I grew a mustache at age 20 and have not ever shaved it off in the last 27 years.  My wife says if the mustache goes....I go with it.
I've done the beard thing a few times, but ever since I got into DE/straight razor shaving as a hobby, I have no interest in growing one.  I to much enjoy the process of using a shaving brush, soap, etc.

I'm just going to see how it goes with the beard  growing but as I shave my head my stubble is usually 3 times longer than what's on my head so won't take long to get the beard effect

I've been known to dabble with whiskers, usually multiple over a year. I'll just get get rid of it and start again for no reason in particular.

This one is about several beards ago now, about a year or so ago, current is a little shorter and staying that way for now.

I've decided after weeks that the beard growing is back on!
I've held off as my partner is against it and didn't want to put anymore strain on our crumbling relationship,
I know it sounds daft but my facial hair does cause arguments but I've decided from now on I'll please myself!
I'll post a mug shot or two when it's sprouted a bit   :salute:

Well, since I buzzed the top the goat got buzzed, not TOTALY, but some, I took a pic, should have seen the sink lol, I think I seriously need one of those beard kings. I just can't get the price for something so simple..
The funny thing, the wife didn't even notice till about 3hrs later and I told her! She knew I did the top, yet not the part she complained about..

Here's mine back to the length I remembered from 5 months ago when I trimmed it right down for my wife as an anniversary gift.  Of course, it wasn't enough for her liking, which made me regret doing it even more, knowing it would take months to get it back.  Don't mind the white whiskers going wild out of the beard ;)

Since it was last trimmed?  Five months for the goat area.  I lost a lot of length when I did that, and really missed it.  Mine grows a bit slowly, so I knew it would take 5-6 months to get it back.  If the whiskers were straight rather than a bit curly and all over the place, it would be like an inch longer than it looks now.  I do trim the sides to help it look neater for work.

Yes it is indeed a patience game.  Time does seem to go quickly though.  I want to grow my hair and beard once I retire.  Office job doesn't allow us to have long hair.  Honestly, I am surprised that they haven't taken issue with my beard at this point.

Every year starting in August I grow my beard out so I can be Santa for the kids in our local community. It is my beard however I do bleach it white for the event. The day after I shave my beard off then start growing it back to my normal short length. The only draw back is this happens in December so my face is cold for a couple of weeks.

Nice pics Steve. :tu:

I'm now wondering how long you folks have been bearded?  I've realised that I've had some kind of facial furniture for 20 years! :ahh  My wife, let alone my daughter, has never seen me completely clean shaven.

Been over 4 years for me. Had my stach for about 33 years before that. Shaved it once in college then grew it right back.

I've had a goatee pretty much full time for 30 years or more now. Got a mole on my chin that likes to get nicked in shaving, so the goatee covers it and avoids that.

Then in the winter now that I live in Michigan, usually grow out the full beard for a few months. Got one right now  :tu:

Just maybe 3-4 years straight for me I think.  I can't remember if I've gone full babyface since a few months before the little one was born, and she's almost 3.

I've had the goatee since 98, normally  short in summer and longer in winter, but normally don't shave but just buzz the rest of facial hair, kinda the same up top, ever since 98 buzzed in winter, but shaved in warmer weather..

I've been bearded since 1973. Refuse to shave and consider it a barbaric habit pushed by manufacturers of shaving stuff. It's always about the money, don't you know?

Myself and my better half on vacation last summer in the California Sierra Nevada's.

Curious to know if anyone of you guys use oil or balm? If so, what brands have you found that work for you. I have to use oil and balm or my beard hairs stand up on end. I have a whole shelf of the medicine cabinet dedicated to it. Just one more thing to drain my wallet.

I was  using beard oil to stop the itch but haven't for a couple of days. I've just got some balm  but haven't used it yet .
All the beard care stuff seems to be quite expensive for what it is in my opinion.
This is what I've been using(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01/18/1889d56e59e506a69a28f3212dae212c.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01/18/36ecf544cc330809853a515619491c2c.jpg)

Let me know how you like the balm. I've spent hundreds on oils and balms. I've found that I have to switch up what oil I'm using every once in a while. My beard doesn't feel as soft if I stick to one brand. As far as balms, I like Doc Elliots. It's from a company based in Texas. Smells good and gives just enough control. I'm starting to sound like a woman.  :-[

Sorry for the bad pic, but as you can see my beard hair is straight and static is its worst enemy. It has a tendency to raise off my face if it isn't weighted with some balm.

I shaved completely last April and started again in May. I stopped trimming it myself and let a professional take over. I get it trimmed once a month with my haircut. That's made a world of difference.

That's what everyone thinks when it first starts growing. The more time you spend growing it, the thicker it will get. Patience is key, and there are a few stages where you will look like you live in a cardboard box.

I don't use any balms or oils. I just trim it once a week with a electric clipper with the 1/4 inch guard in place so my beard is kept to a short close clipped style. Way easier to keep and shampoo in the shower every morning, and no long beard for someone to grab onto in a close ugly situation. Best of both worlds, no shaving, and no handholds for hostiles.

Link?  I am too busy fighting sexism to look for it

I thought it was the hipster thing to leave a beard this days, rather than shave. Or maybe they shave the rest of their body, apart from the face    :o

When I started this thread I never thought about being sexiest with the beardsmen title,so I apologise to any female  members who were offended.
Now to the male members here who are complaining about sexism, you must be either joking or have beard envy.

There's an certain amount of preconceived notions regarding men with beards.  Now a days however with lots of men growing full beards I don't think those preconceived notions apply.  It's like when goatees got really popular with men who otherwise were clean shaven.  There are several men I work with who for the last decade were clean shaven everyday.  A couple years ago I started to see some with "5 o'clock shadows".   Just last year they grew out some full beards.  Why the change? I think acceptance much like tattoos.

Don't sweat it, wear what you dig!  :tu: :D

What trips me out is the very young men who can grow such amazing beards.  At my daughters school there is this guy ( 16 or 17 ) who has a pretty terrific beard already.  Now of course the young girls there think its gross but man that kids gonna have a ZZ Top beard in no time.

I think its great seeing all the different facial hair styles men are wearing these days.  It's nice for many who struggle to keep a clean shaven face to have the option to grow out a proper beard.

My brother would shave at 6am and be bearded by 1pm.  Poor dude being an accountant had to be clean shaven.  Now since its more acceptable he's able to keep a close trimmed beard.

I have had a beard for going on 8+ years, because I am lazy, don't like shaving, and am lucky enough to be able to grow a full beard that looks good.  And over the years no one has told me that they find beards gross (but then again I doubt any one would tell me that) girls claim to like the way it looks (one even asked if she could touch it) and guy are generally jealous of my ability to grow a beard.

There was one odd event about a year ago in the bowls of the USS Massachusetts, I was wondering around and there was a family there too with a kid lagging behind, the father said hay you better catch up or there will just be a big guy with a beard here.

I have rock a few days of growth kept pretty trimmed for years now. My wife doesn't seem to have an opinion either way but before here it def helped score a few of the exes I am proud of.

I do shave for a big meeting or something. Let it grow out more too sometimes. If it gets longer I recommend Honest Amish beard balm (avail on Amazon) which takes any itch out of it.

Exactly! The climate was different, clothing was different, nutrition was different; all these factors play a role in how comfortable people can be with wearing their beard in the summer around here. I admit I'm feeble and I prefer shaving. Or is my beard too virile even for myself?

I was reading a newspaper article about a book on beards in the ancient world and how they reflected social norms. Egyptians had to shave every day, head included. Sumerians would grow long, wavy beards, while their neighbours whose name eludes me right now wore short, well trimmed beards. Romans shaved IIRC, as for Greeks they generally wore their beard short and trimmed but not too much until Alexander the Great changed that and imposed that men shave regularly. The trends changed all the time apparently to reflect changing societal preferences/values.

It seemed like an interesting read, I'll try to find its title.

If you don't have a steady hand with scissors and comb, get an electric hair trimmer and find out what size guard fits your beard style. In winter, I use a 3/8 or even 1/2 inch guard on the trimmer for a neat even look. In summer, I'll go to the 1/4 inch guard for a shorter trimmed look that is a bit cooler for the hot weather.

Here is mid winter cold weather look. I used the larger guard this time of year.

This photo was summer cut, using the 1/4 inch guard on the trimmer for the once a week beard trim.

I find that with the electric trimmer used every Saturday morning, the beard stays neat looking and uniform in appearance. The Wagner brand has been very good for me.

We had a company even on Saturday on a rugby field, and I noticed my beard is substantial enough to throw a discernible shadow.
This afternoon I'm trimming my hair to #1 and my beard to #2 for the winter.

Beards are currently back in fashion, although not everywhere as I was assured by my Dutch friend that visited recently.

I amount I paid for 4 Gillette Mach-something blades recently means I'll be moving to a cut-throat razor in the near future.

Say goodbye to your beards and meet the future of fashion Gents:

NAAAA!!! It ain't gonna happen!!! I refuse to shave my face, so sure as heck ain't gonna shave my head! Razors ought to be banned on humanitarian grounds. Barbarous to scrape off something that is growing there naturally.

Given the hard time my wife is having with the lack of beard I can only imagine what she'd say if I shaved all my hair as well. :D  Nothing good I suspect.

Gahhh!  What did I do? :ahhh  A monumental goof when shaving has lead to this.

A simple slip of the razor meant I took a lump out my beard and forced me into a goatee, but I wasn't a fan of that look any more so I've clipped it right back and am starting again.  My wife isn't a fan......which surely means she doesn't like the look of my face.

Dude... Off topic... I have same roof light as you have. Alltough it is bronze coloured.

And, nice beard. Easy on summer.

The house (and the light fittings) came with my wife's job so we didn't get to pick.  Still, they work well and I've got nothing against them.  Are you using LED lamps yet?

Slowly turning myself to led's. That lamp is burning bulbs quite often, so two out of three has been changed.

That's exactly what was happening to me too.  We were going through those halogen GU10 lamps far too quickly.

Well I finally trimmed it down considerably, but this is as short as I'm willing to go, unless shaving it off outright.  Figured it was time with warmer weather coming and to allow for some fresh growth.

It turns into more like an oil when rubbed in the hands.  Then put it in beard.  It works really well for any dry skin (or beardruff they call it) as well.

I used the "Mrs" shampoo/conditioner in the shower, heck I haven't touched anything like that in like  17yrs? I just don't keep anything up top so what's the point? Some what of a diff, but while out yesterday I picked up a small bottle of baby shampoo, I read somewhere that it makes a diff, I looked for any beard stuff but nothing, only shaving cream or after stuff, I fig heck for only $1 it was worth a try, no? Well, as soon as we got home I went to the sink and tried it out, the results? Not bad, a couple more uses and just maybe we'll see a real diff?

I was told not to use head shampoo on the beard as the skin on your face isn't as tough as the scalp . You can get beard shampoo but since I ran out I just use warm water and then put either beard oil or balm on, and I haven't had any beard ruff yet(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160703/7f7a2ae17d010ba570b21d3dfc7054b4.jpg)

Right, that's why I read baby shampoo, cause well, what else can be softer on a face? I just washed up and it's not bad, I must say it even smells soft, but I'll be looking online for something, they just didn't have anything at wallyworld..

In case this helps, I used to get hair dandruff a couple of times a year. Then I started using tea tree oil conditioner once a week on my hair, and never since. Never tried it with a beard and I shaved my goatee for the summer (i know, the horror), but it is well known for helping with dandruff and keep scalp moisturized.  Might work very well.

Ok, tried something new, the Mrs just happened to get a brain fart, it was funny cause it was just out of nowhere, "coconut oil".. I was like huh? She said yeah coconut oil is suppose to be great for hair, so why not try it on your beard? We have a huge tub of it, So I was like ok worth a try. So she just put a small dab on her palm, rubbed it around to get it to melt, then rubbed it in.. She said to let it just sit, maybe for like 20min? So while I just sat, I looked it up to find how women use it, but then also found some beard growers also swear by it, some use very very little and leave it in, and others use a little more and let it sit to wash it out like I did. Well, the 20min had passed so it was time to wash it out, I just used a simple baby shampoo, did it twice, then dried it off with a towel, and gave it a few strokes with a comb.. Put a sad face on while feeling the beard walking over to the wife, which made her want to feel it, and she said "WOW, that's soo much nicer!" I was like heck yeah, maybe a few more times at doing that and this just might get soft! Now the real trick, how to get her to let me grow this thing bigger, maybe like weasel's, I've just never grown anything bigger then a simple untrimmed goatee..

I've been bearded for a while now, last shave would've been late 2011 sometime...

My beard can get quite dirty working in construction, so I've always washed it with my regular shampoo, I do like to use oil and/or balm afterwards though. I've got some really nice Black Cherry Tobacco scented stuff from a place called No Blade Shall Invade, though my oil's getting low and he doesn't do that 'flavour' anymore so I'll be scouting around for something new soon enough.

I've had a goatee for my entire adult life with two brief periods where my employer forced me to shave it off(sometimes working in Hospitality is stupid.)  I have grown a full beard and rocked that sucker along with my shaved bald head, and I'm thinking this winter that I will do that again.  Problem is my current employer allows beards if you already have one, but you aren't allowed to grow a new one.  How stupid is that?  I'm just gonna ignore that rule.

As for my current beard, it's a neatly no2 trimmed Goatee with no mustache.  Looks professional.  :tu:

My goatee is pretty much close to the longest it's ever been, some how it came up today as I was talking to the wife and I said something about growing the sides out, amazingly the wife didn't scream at me and kinda gave the ok, so long as it's kept neat,, only thing is it's still summer and I don't think it's going to happen till it gets cooler out..

I've been rocking a beard for about 5 years now. Vastly prefer the lower maintenance.

Back a couple of years ago my wife and I started switching to more natural personal care products. All I use on mine is Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap to get it clean. I then put in some apple cider vinegar and rinse it out. I was really surprised how well it makes it soft.

Low maintenance is another reason I prefer a beard to clean shaven :tu:  I hate having to bother with shaving, and this way I only have to shave a little around the beard.  Much easier.  Plus my neck tends to break out after every shave when I do my whole face, which is annoying.

I had problems with shaving my neck too. Though I think that was mainly that I used an electric razor. I've since switched to using a DE razor. That's helped a bunch.

Is the picture right side up for you on your phone or is it sideways? On another forum I've been it would auto rotate for some reason, but I've never had that specific issue on this site. But, what would fix it is if you made even the smallest crop top or bottom left or right and then the photo would post correctly. Try that maybe

And grow that beard sir... You have the green light from the wifey :D :D

Don't shave for like 5 weeks.  Get a good barber.  The at work trim takes way to long and takes a particular ocd to get a good look.

I've have a beard before it "was cool to have a beard"
You just need patience and a good barber to maintain it.
I go every 5-9 weeks and just shave my neck and cheeks once week.

Shaved head too

I chopped a whole inch off mine then trimmed up the sides, it was driving me nuts, but I must admit it was the longest I've ever had it, i hit the 2" mark! Idk about now,I haven't trimmed it since then and with the cooler weather here I might be able to keep it long, and maybe even the sides, wife pending..

Anyone ever heard or tried their hand at either of these or anything like them? One of them popped up on my Facebook and somehow the wife even saw it, so I kinda thought maybe if I keep everything nice and neat she won't complain and let me grow it?

So I kinda did something, I took a pic on my pad, roughed the size and put a piece of paper on top, sketched it out, then found a very cheap piece of plastic and drew it on and cut it out.. the plastic is a little flimsy but I fig if it works I have a perfect thick piece of plastic that I can sketch it on and make a better, I really don't need a comb, just a layout? So I guess we'll see, any thoughts?

I put that little thing to use to see how they work, well, I must say they are a little tricky to fig out for the first time but after fiddling around for a little I got the hang of it. That one I made is a little flimsy so it does bend, so since I think it's a half decent little toy I guess I'll go the next step and make one out of the heavier plastic..

I might try to get a full beard going for no-shave-november, but unfortunately I have to get my boss to approve since it's against company policy to grow a beard while working here.  You can have one if you were hired with it, or if you grew it on vacation, but they don't like the stubble look while it's coming in.  Stupid rule, but it's one of few Hotels that even allows facial hair.  Since I'm a Manager I have to lead by example...

That's sort of what happens with me.  I shaved mine off a couple years or so ago, and instantly regretted it.  Made it worse knowing it would take many months to grow it back to its full glory.

I'm not sure I need to go that far. Annoyingly the beard doesn't seem as "weak" when kept trimmed short. It's only when I gets longer that it looks like it's slipping off my face. I think I'm going to hang on a while longer, in case the weaker areas catch up - but I suspect that ultimately I'm going to be reverting back to a shorter style.

Yeah, there's certainly similarities in the growth pattern there. In different light conditions, mine can look stronger than the pic I posted, but intentionally posted one which shows the weaknesses. The chin area does actually have coverage, though it's quite thin and nearly blonde in places. The high cheeks are dark, but just sparse  :-\ it doesn't look so bad from a distance, but closer in you can see the weaknesses, particularly I I light is hitting the skin underneath.

Here's another pic from a different angle, in different light, which makes the beard look a lot fuller. I think I'll need to base whatever style I choose on the sparser pics though.

I'd still like to find a style with that I'm happy with that has a bit of length to it. I myself grew up in the NE, and I kinda wanted to do what my grandparents did. My grandfather was in the air force and did a lot of traveling around the world, but just not in the U.S. So when he retired, they sold the house and car and bought a 5th wheel and truck, and well went to all states, they kept going back to Az, so after traveling for 8yrs sold the truck and trailer and bought into a park out there. Of course I got to go out and visit, funny part was after you get so used to the hot weather 65deg is freezing, yet to a someone used to cold it's like summer, so one morning he was pulling the golf clubs out in winter clothing and I was standing on the porch in a pair of boxers.. lol

I've just trimmed back my goatee to take focus off my growing mustache.  It's against company policy to grow it while employed(but if you already have it it's ok, weird I know).  Luckily I grow facial hair fast so by the end of the week it will be grown in enough that no one will notice.  I want to go full beard but the wife is protesting it.

You guys are hilarious!!

I agree JR, it's stupid!  Kind of a universal Hospitality thing though, most Hotels don't allow facial hair at all.  Mine allows it but they don't like the look of someone growing in a beard, which does make sense.  My last Resort was the same way.  I've always ignored the rule and grown it anyway but it's hard because I'm a Manager and I have to lead by example.

I wonder what it is with wifey's and beards .  Scratchy?  Unkempt looking?

I work with a guy who has a ZZ Top beard.  It's quite epic actually.  I've been scruffy fro the past 20 years and my female friends always tell me I should clean up.  I get it but a full blown awesome beard is, well AWESOME.

It must be the same thing as some men not liking when their wife or gf cuts off all their hair

That's funny, because it's always been the opposite of my situation. The wifey loves the beard, and once in 1998 when I went for a job interview and the place I was applying for had a no beard policy so I cut it off just before the interview, wifey hated it!!! Told me to not bother taking the job and grow the beard back. Once in 2005 or 6 when I trimmed ti down to a van dyke goatee, she hated that. But so did I and grew it back with no urging from the better half. Afterward, she told me if I cut it off again, she'd go get a butch haircut. We agreed I'd have the beard until death do us part. I don't like the idea of Karen with a short haircut!!!!

My wife loves my Goatee, but hates a mustache or full beard.  She's very specific.

Been rocking a beard for almost 20 years, tried a goatee a few times but always come back.

Good on you bearded guys  :salute:

I can see if you got together with your significant others when you couldn't grow facial hair then grew out this massive beard.  I've always done what I wanted when it came to appearance aside from work regulations.  I had really long hair at one point working in kitchens and while the bosses weren't too pleased I always just wore a hairnet and bandana plus hat just so they'd keep quiet.

When I was married ( 20 yrs ) the wife preferred clean shaven, clean cut.  When I struck out on my own ( business ) I rarely if even was clean shaven again.  I don't have a thick logger beard ( too much native american blood I think ) but a #2-3 guard is best I can manage.  Sometimes I shave and go with a van dyke which is where I am now.  Stubble is growing in so I'll leave it this way till I fancy shaving again or not.

If I could grow out a full blown thick beard you bet I'd be doing that pronto.

Sorry for the crappy pic, today I finally buzzed the sides off.. at first I only trimmed and tightened the sides but it really didn't look like I did anything, and just said ah, this is the longest I've ever had it so I just buzzed it off. Is it me or do I look thinner? The top is also the longest it's been in over 17yrs, I can pinch and pull it, I don't like it! Cause if I can that means the wife can!

Beards... hm... well...

I don´t have one and I won´t have one. I work in an authority and beards are not so well seen there. Usually my face is as a plain as a baby´s butt. Need to shave every two days.

Once I had an accident I nearly shot out my right eye with a metal shrapnel that went off a chisel and direclty onto my retina. Well, long long ago and I had to stay off from work for about two months. Did no shaving. My wife hated it. I can easiyl remember her "Remove that sauerkraut off your face - looks like an old cat!" ... and all that blabber.

Never did get any beard since then....

We were watching some family videos from as far back as "99" and the Mrs was like wow look how young you look! I loved the short face hair back then, so today for giggles I buzzed the sides and only put the trimmer on and did the goat, I wasn't going to shave the sides slick in this freaking weather! I must say I got to see those cute dimples on the wife's face that I haven't seen in a while, but this isn't going to stay trimmed, maybe in summer but not now!

I have a beard. I hate shaving, and I don't care about looks overly much. I'm thinking about growing my hair too.
Pretty soon I'll resemble Radagast the Brown (I'm too young to look like Gandalf the Gray).

Given my recent illness, it's been several weeks since I shaved down to my normal goatee. I'm considering leaving the full beard, and trimming down my goatee to match. Also pondering ordering some beard oil samples from First Olympian (http://firstolympian.com/) (based on a recommendation from a fellow bearded friend in the UK)

:tu: The oil makes a world of difference. A lot less itchy. A boars hair brush will distribute it well.

I heard baby oil kinda works, when I let it all grow  a while back I tried it and I gotta say it made it softer, but I got tired of doing everything and just cut it all down to the goat.. I thought about letting it all grow again but by the time it starts to get anywhere summer will be here and I'll have to cut it back again..

I ended up with generic beard oil, it seems to help with softness and itching.

However another question for my fellow beardies... it's been a while that my beard has been attempting to catch up with my goatee which I had originally. Does anyone experience a sort of flair out at the bottom edge (on your neck)? I've noticed it's begun to do that a lot despite attempts to train it otherwise, and since I usually shave all that away it's new to me. If you know what I'm talking about, how do you deal with it?

Totally natural. If you're  like me the hair grows in an upward direction on your neck. The only thing you can do is let it grow long enough for it to start hanging down. Balm seems to help with this also. If you dont wish for your beard to get that long a good barber knows how to trim it shorter so that it doesn't push the hairs growing down out. Does this make sense? If not I'll try to think of a way to explain it better.

Ok I need a new beard trimmer, I've had this same $5 AA battery eating one for over 12yrs  don't get me wrong it's been a good little trimmer, it will trim very close and also adjust and leave like 3/4". I'm just tired of having to replace the battery's so often, that and having two great trims then hearing the motor slow down because of the battery's, I think it's time, any suggestions? Looking for:

Rechargeable,
Simple adjustability, not something with a bunch of combs,
And that's pretty much it, oh, and nothing huge or expensive?

Yeah I think some of these totally expensive ones are just crap, there suppose to be soooo great because of how smooth the motor runs and all the digital display to give time left or even laser cutting assistance, like come on, seriously? Just need a good motor that turns, a good set of cutting blades and an adjustment setup, that's it, I'd just like to get something a little better then the $5 I've had preferably something rechargeable so I don't keep going through battery's..

True, the one thing I don't understand about Philips is one item is nice and for like $30, yet the same thing goes for like $200? What's the diff? I know some stuff will have a digital read out, but everything else is the same?

Went with Philips, stopped at the pharmacy and took a look to see what they had, I've been looking online but I like to physically look hold the box rather then just say that one. Well this one cought my eye, it's the 3000, there was another one hidden behind another which was the 3100 which didn't have a label so the wife ran up to get a price, and it was the same, now this one was suppose to be better, but it was more plastic rather then a simple metal cutting head, grant it this one you have to pop on the plastic combs for adjustment rather then this newer one but idk, for some reason this one just called to me, lol.. that bag sucks, so I gotta come up with something better after I figure what lengths I like, cause I don't need all of those, and I really don't need a nose thingy, I got something else for that, yet that small trimming head looks cool, but hey it's a Philips and its freaking rechargeable!

I can't wait to try that new trimmer out, but I like to do everything in one day, and I need a buzz up top. I did find me a new case to put it in, an old cigar one, it is a otter box, I'll have to snap a pic.

Here's the little bag I got next to the box I had, so I threw it in the box but then I thought what if I took all my trimming junk and put it in the box? So I took the two most likely trimming lengths put them in along with my nose trimmer, another unique little trimmer, and a pencil. I tossed the charger in the bag with the other lengths, and now I can toss the setup under the sink, cool thing is if the sink was to leak that box is 100% waterproof! Now I have half a shelf to use in the medic cabinet..

As for length, I started with longer then what I fig, then just kept going down till I felt it was ok, yeah you just change guard combs, but I don't need to keep going down by 1/64" to get that spot on, seriously? Like 30diff lengths?
No I didn't use it on the head cause I didn't know if it had enough juice, but heck it prob did, who knows maybe I'll try it out..

I almost bought this one cause that’s the soap I use, but if you look at it the soap would have to be cut in half in order to fit? But that’s all I’d like just a small, mug size, scuttle, but I don’t shave much so no biggie..

My soap is flat bottomed, so it doesn't sit in the scuttle properly. I only put it on the sink for the pic, it normally sits on a shelving unit just to the side - and I don't have to share my bathroom with three others like you do  :D

The proper scuttle soaps are round bottomed to sit in properly, and the flat bottomed soaps are usually refills for tins or pots .... but I didn't learn this till too late either

I’m still learning as I go, no one ever taught me anything when it came to shaving, I’ve spent well over $2,000 getting expensive electric razors, or 2,3,or 4 blade razors, yet all to fall for a simple safety razor. I loved that one scuttle, it just takes up to much room, and takes to long to do anything, I’d just like to find a simple mug like scuttle where the soap just goes in unlike that other one I posted,
JR

Maybe something like these, idk?

They'd work with the scuttle soaps, just not the flat bottomed soap you have. Stick with the mug till you use up all the flat bottomed soaps, then see what's kicking around  :tu:

I think I understand that Col Conk scuttle a little better, if you look at it it’s got a grove for the brush to sit in on the handle, and if there was a puck of soap in it there would be no way it would sit, now the soap comes in a simple plastic container, so I think you pop that open and leave the soap in and just get a couple brushes and just work a lather on the top of that mug, close the soap back up and your good to go.. of course now that I want one I can’t find one, lol..

I shaved off my beard yesterday. Today my boss didn´t recognize me, so I´ll have to grow it back ASAP.

Agreed, but it ain’t getting razored! Oh hell no, just getting buzzed! Grant it going to be a little chilly, even the tops coming off, I hate long hair, and if I can pinch it, it’s too long!

I believe this is as long as my beard has ever been.....

......I'm in a smurf-the-world kinda mood......not like depressed, more like come-and-get-it-I-dare-you kinda way.

So.......my beard is going dark blue this weekend.  Wanted like full-on Smurf blue but couldn't find any.......

The other day I was going to post in this thread, last year I had a pretty good viking beard on the go. I since shaved down to my regular 'stash and goatee which I've had for who knows how many years now

I'm contemplating clean wipe for Movember, but I doubt it would raise much awareness given my general lack of socialization of recent.

Thread resurrection to ask a beard related question:

Now my beard has achieved a certain length and bushiness it has started to interfere with eating - Cooking up a New Years day 'Big Boi Breakfast' I ended up with as much egg yolk in my 'Big Boi Beard' as I did in my 'Big Boi Belly'

What do all you MTO Beardsmen do about the natural sieve growing around your chops?

As  :worthless: ........

PS Happy New Year all!

My solutions may not suit you:

1  Keep mo and beard below mouth trimmed fairly short (less likely to catch food, and easier to clean if it does happen)

2  Try and spill less food (get more in mouth. less elsewhere)   ;)

3  Wash around mouth after eating (even if it is just a rinse w'out soap)

The post is yours if you'd like it: 3 main meal shifts a day, a couple of snack shifts, plus you get to keep all the grub you can forage from my beard, so the more thorough you are the more grub you get to keep.
Interested?

If you're a bearded hunk like me Sync maybe we could do a 'You forage my beard, I'll forage yours' type of deal. If my maths is correct, we'll never have to buy food again
