Title: ST 200 Owners Club
Post by: Threeme2189 on September 06, 2010, 11:41:18 AM
I think it's about time we, the proud owners of one of the best full sized tools around, had an owners club too.

It came before outside opening tools, and before the "new and improved locking mechanism".
It doesn't have replaceable cutters, a diamond coated file or scissors.

But it has proven itself as one of the best tools ever made.
There's nothing fancy about it, it's meant to get the job done and that's what it does best.
I salute you, the mighty ST 200.  :salute:

So I welcome you, the owners of the Leatherman SuperTool 200 to join the club.
And feel free to post pictures of every shape and size :)

Bob did Leatherman make a SS CC ST 200?     The reason I ask as I`ve never seen one. I`ve only seen two BO CC ST200 both are in the pics we`ve posted.

It's funny you should ask that.
A while ago my ST 200 pliers got a bit bent out of shape, so I sent it in for repairs.
what I got back was a SS ST 200 with the charge plier head that has a cap crimper.
so in that sense, Leatherman made at least one CC ST 200. because I haven't modded it in any way :)

Oop, well now that's embarrassing! :-[ :D I looked at yours on the stump there and thought they were all SS ::) So that's why I posted my blackies! :D

To answer: I've never seen a stock SS CC ST 200 :-\ We'll have to see if Joe stops by and enlightens us :)

mine arrived today, after I bought it off ebay, the seller sent me an ominous message saying that he had put it on his table to post then found his niece playing with it. Fortunately it survived in its minty original state. I got it because I was curious about the rocker locks.

absolutely  :-\, well they look pretty cool to me. As a shelf queen its fun to open and close the locks. Might be annoying as an EDC.

Post by: MedusaOblongata on October 02, 2011, 10:14:56 PM
I EDCed my ST 200 for years. Now it lives in my leatherworking kit. I sharpened the smallest flathead, and it makes perfect size slits in leather for the foldover prongs of studs, and I sharpened the awl on a Dremel so it's a round spike that will make holes, not slits, in leather. A newer tool wouldn't work, as the smallest screwdriver is much bigger, and the hole would make regrinding the awl difficult. It was a good followup to the original ST, but I don't miss releasing those locks all the time, nor do I miss how the time-loosened tool pivots let the tools just fall out while I'm working on something (think I got a few cuts from that).

I qualify for this club now. :tu:  As the original Supertool was my first ever LM I can say that I'd always had a soft spot for the bigger MT, but I also found the Core and ST300 were just a bit to fat for my taste.  The Answer?  A Supertool 200 of course. ;)

A couple of weeks ago I picked up an unused ST200 without a sheath at a flea market for $20. Two or three booths away, I found the correct leather sheath (unused)for $5.00.

What are the chances of that happening again?

The ST200 is my favorite large multi, and I now have 3 of them.  As I already mentioned in another thread, my "user" stainless ST200 in Ripoffs pouch went AWOL in May of this year and I really missed it.  I bought a "like new" one off ebay for a really good price, and it arrived today.  I also bought a new Ripoffs pouch for it.  While waiting for shipment of the tool, I found my old one in the glove box of my brother's car, in the pouch.   I guess I can't complain too much since I now have it back...

My user has a 1001 date and "Leatherman Tool" on the plier head, the "like new" one from ebay (that appears to have never been used), also with a 1001 date but "Leatherman USA" on the plier head, and a like-new BO one that lives in my bug-out bag with a 0304 date.  I figure it may someday make a great SHTF tool.

Pictures are forthcoming.

Glad you found your lost ST200 Terry.

 :tu: Thanks David!

I was blaming the clip-style Ripoffs sheath for a while, thinking that a branch may have "snatched" it off my belt while mowing around the woods on my property.  This has happened before when I've had flashlights or knives clipped to my jeans.  Therefore, the new Ripoffs I bought are the belt-loop type.  It turns out, of course, that the clip was not a concern at all.

I'm still working on those ST200 pics...  ;)

Any idea how it ended up in your brother's car?  Anyway, "all's well that ends well" as they say. :tu:

I accidentally left it in his truck after a canoe trip we did in May.  He saw it in there, thought it was his, and transferred it to his daily driver where I found it two weeks ago and took it back.

Funny...  I bet there's not a single person on this site who would mistake someone else's multi for theirs.  Especially in a case like this one, since my brother has never owned an ST200 or a Ripoffs pouch.  He actually said to me, "Yeah, I have so many of those things I guess I thought it was one of mine."

Needless to say, though he and I have some things in common, he does not share in my enthusiasm for (or use of) tools.  I've had that tool for about 5 years, and I can tell you exactly what MTO member I bought it from, and what I paid for it.  Likewise, I can tell you what used tool I bought with the Ripoffs pouch, what MTO member I bought it from, and what I paid for it.  I'll bet if you threw that ST200 in a pile of 10 naked ST200s, I could sort through the pile pretty quickly and tell you which one is mine.

I did receive my first ST 200 the day before yesterday.
It has gone through the first cleaning. Is tool clumping common? And the tools are really hard to get out atm. I think a disassembly and torough cleaning is in order - Will any parts explode in my face when I pull the pivots or will the locking mechanism stay in place?

Clumping is normal, but they shouldn't be really hard to get out.  Dissasembly shouldn't be a problem either.  There is one part of the mechanism held in by the pivot, and it should be as simple as any of the tools to remove/replace.  The other part (that you rotate with your thumb) is riveted in, so it will stay in the handle when you remove the tools.

In other words, no explosion.  ;)

I dont know of any tricks to ease the tension of the locks. Remember the locks on the 200 can still be unlocked like the original SuperTool.    :)

I do feel that there is a right way and a wrong way to try and use the locks, or at least a way that I feel makes it much easier anyway.

When you want to put a tool away;

don't open the handles yet, keep them closed so as to fill you hand.  Trying to hold onto only one handle is just too fiddly IMO.

Lay the pad of your thumb on top of the lock and 'roll' it backwards.  Don't dig the tip of your thumb in and try and 'pull' it.

Close the tool (blade, screwdriver or whatever) to about 45° until it touched the opposite handle, it won't pop back so you don't have to hold it there.

Only then do you open the handles and fold the tool away.  Close the handles and you are done.

Of course that might be how everyone is already doing it, and it might sound long winded, but it's the way I've done it for years and I find it the quickest and easiest way of going about it.  YMMV

Actually, that is exactly how I've always found it easiest also, but I don't believe I could have put it to words nearly as well as you did.  I think I would have just given up and shot a video.

I don't see many Mr Pinchy V1s for sale these days, either the "First Production Run" or from the the regular production run.  I don't think Gerber sold all that many in the first place, and it was a quite time ago.  One does pop up every now and then on evilbay, but I think I might have sort of promised the next one I find to some bloke from a semi-tropical island paradise who has been collecting a few nice MTs recently   :pok:

My ST 200 arrived yesterday, It's in almost new condition  (Date code 05/05) other than a tiny chip on the PE blade. It came with a Nylon sheath which I don't care for but luckily I have a old school Leather sheath that I bought a while back on E-bay thinking it was a PST sheath. The ST200 fits great in it. The roller locks are easier and smoother than on my Pulse.

One thing not disclosed or shown in the Ebay pics is that it has a Cabelas logo on one of the handles.
I'm not big on advertisements on my MT's , can a guy buff that logo off without smurfing up the handle ?

i think you really should keep the cabelas logo! I'm sure that there are collectors on this site who would be more than willing to swap you a new condition Supertool 200 for that one. Great score!

I think the answer is; not easily, no.  I've got a Sideclip where someone has tried exactly that, and now it has one side that is more polished than the rest and you can still faintly see the logo anyway.

I have an idea someone here on MTo was able to duplicate the OEM finish on some MTs (possibly LMs ? ), but it required significant investment in buffing wheels and such like, and seemed a fairly complex and laborious process to get a very close match.

My first Leatherman was a ST200.
I got it as a Christmas gift around 1998(?) from my father, he had put together a few things to keep in my car including a Maglite etc
So I kept this ST200 on me for years in my car(s), using it occasionally, but not seeing the value until a few years later.
Then I started using it a lot more.
And then I found out about other models.
And then I ended up with a few dozen LM products. And thats where we are now.

Thanks dad.

Picked up another BO for a song on E-bay. It has the exact same date codes as my other one 0204 0304, what are the chances of that. The dates are even in the same side of the tool as each other.

I had so many ST200s now I am left with a BO one.  I gave a SS one to my friends kid and traded off the others.  I was really digging the rocker locks and the look of the tool.  I may have to locate a SS one just because

Well, I exaggerated about the "blood everywhere" part...  ::) but it is still a deep cut   :P. I had to take the picture a few times, as in wrong angles, it looked like a bleeding smurf  The white powder is amoxicillin taken out from its capsule, and drizzled over the wound. It is a part of my family's practice to prevent infection. Not sure if there is scientific fact behind it, but it seems to work every time.

So you still like the 200 better than the OG :D The OG is still a fine tool though ;)

Agreed!  I still prefer the convenience of the locks on the ST200.  For me that trumps the slimmer profile of the ST, since I always carry it in a belt pouch anyway.

The comfort of the ST200 is better, but it's not that much of a difference to really matter, and I tend to wear gloves when the ST200 is on duty.

So now you need a 300  It has all the comfort plus a better lock

I just used my ST200 last night while working on my tractor.  I will be sorely missing it on the weekends since I'm participating in the Rebar challenge.  We'll see how it compares.

Nice pic, BTW.

Weekend carry is the only time in the challenges I usually struggle but I think the Rebar will be OK for me this go around

I just re-acquired a 200 this week. Friend at work was wanting to try a rebar, so I was happy to accommodate. He must have got it from a city employee or something. One point to the pliers was broken off, so I had to do a slight BN job.

Just got a ST200. I like the look of the levera, but do think the 300 is technically better. However, the 200 is no slacker and looks cooler than the 300.
Here are pics of my new 200 with other LMs and with other MTs made around the same era.

Nice!
The 200 is a great MT! I have one that is unused and one that I have beat the hell out of that needs service, but I fear LM will send me a 300 instead. 300 is very nice, but not has good in the hand as the 200. Maybe they'll fix it. Who knows. I sent my wave off for a blade and got the same handles back with a new plain blade, new serrated blade, new file, new scissors and a new pliar head. :multi:

Got the ST200 after many years of THE PULSE. The only thing the supertool 200 cant do is make coffee and have SCISSORS. As long as McDonalds has the 1 dollar coffee the only question I have is "HAS ANYONE EVER PUT SCISSORS ON THIS MASTERPIECE ?  If I could get scissors on this it would be the total BOMB ! Was thinking of moving the tiny flat screw driver to the can opener spot, remove the can opener then put the pulse phillips which is shorter in middle then put the pulse scissor in the old tiny screw driver spot. Any thoughts or ideas.

If you have the parse wrenches to try that, then it can't hurt to try it!
Just make sure the lockup groove is in the same position as the other tools in regards to the pivot location. If you are tooled up to modifiy the tools, then start a post in the mod sub forum. Those guys are tuly outstanding with their depth of knowledge and experience. They were instrumental in helping me find and properly install a new blade in my LM Flair recently.

Some great pics of a true classic Steve  :tu:.

I just cleaned up the ST200 I won in a giveaway here back in 2013 (thank you Aloha007 for your generostiy  :hatsoff:).

Okay, I already gave it a clean right when I got it, but this time I gave it an extensive (REAL EXTENSIVE !!!  :ahhh) clean, removed all the small spots of rust on the handles, and also out of each little groove from the ruler and letter/number stamped in the handle using a toothpick and a lot of patience  :D.  I've also tightened it up, since it was very wobbly, the only thing left to do now is to try that trick of turning the pivot point using a pair of locking pliers to try and remove the play on the pliers.

I really like my Supertools  :D.

Sounds like the cleaning I gave my Charge TTI these past 2(!!) days.
Luckily I enjoy cleaning up tools...

It came out a looker though!

If anyone is looking for a ST200 BO CC here's one for sale on ebay.

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,80299.new.html#new

These are a bit rare these days.

This one has "USA" pliers which AFAIK indicates it is from the early production ST200 runs, the later runs probably had "Tool" pliers ( I believe that is what happened with the SS CC ST200's).

Hello, I currently own two ST 200s.  I received my first as a gift from my father-in-law back in 2004.  I previously had a PST that was a gift from my dad, but it was stolen so the ST 200 was a welcomed gift.  Having been used to the PST, I was a little skeptical of the size of the ST, it definitely lived up to its name, it was SUPER.  My fears were quickly allayed as I used the ST constantly.  At the time, I was a sonar operator/technician on a Navy minesweeper and I used the ST on a daily basis.  I quickly grew a love affair with the size of the ST, it was hardly noticeable while it rested on my belt in its sheath.
Once the ST 300 was released, I often thought about picking one up but I still haven't, that is how much I love the 200.  In the 15 years since I have owed the 200, I have used it for a variety of chores: it has helped immensely in numerous home repairs, it has been reliable on general maintenance of my automobiles, and I even use it when fishing to pull hooks from large mouth bass lips.
I love the 200 so much that I picked up a second and keep it as a spare in case my first ever bites the dust. But yes, I do own and love the 200.  I will post some picks when I get a chance.

Ken

Well guys I can say I'm officially in the st200 club. Was able to score a st200 with its original box and accessories pamphlet along with it. Date stamps read 10/03 02/04. Besides the wire cutters being a dinged up and very minor surface rust on the inside of the handles the tool is in great shape.

I’m curious about when the ST200 switched over to TOOL cast into the plier head rather than USA.  With PST the rough date is 0601.

As a result of a CA lawsuit around the same time, LTG had to stop using USA on their tools until a certain threshold of parts could be made in USA.

There are even tools where USA was ground out of the plier head, which is one I have and why I’m curious about the dates on your tools.

BO ST200 0204/ 0304 TOOL
SS ST200 0403/ 0803 TOOL

According to my spreadsheet earliest/latest handle dates for my ST200's are:
earliest "USA" Pliers ST200 is "0901/1001"
latest "USA" pliers ST200CC is "1201/0102"
earliest "Tool" pliers ST200 is "1102/0203"
earliest "Tool" pliers ST200CC is "0703/1003"

Of course these are the dates the handles were made, not the date the pliers were fitted to handles, and knowing the way LM assembled tools from bins of parts it is hard to pin down a definitive changeover date (not to mention later warranty repairs that can really muddy the dating waters).

I also have a pre-production ST200 that has  no date codes on the handles, with laser etched markings on handle (not stamped).  I believe this was made for a Shot Show.

That’s great information.  I was hoping to pin down more details on this ‘Ground Out’ version.  They went somewhere, but I doubt they went into retail packaging.  The dates on mine are later too so the plier head likely was sitting around for a bit, regardless of when they ground it out… although the BO was done after so there’s that detail as well.

Here is the full write up I did on the tool I was referencing.  There was definitely some new to me information uncovered in the process.

// Leatherman Super Tool 200 - Operation Iraqi Freedom Prototype

“The story of this prototype tool starts in the mid 1980’s when Stuart Leatherman, National Sales Manager for Leatherman Tool Group at the time and brother to Tim Leatherman, formed a relationship with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) for the inclusion of Leatherman Tools on all US Army and Air Force bases worldwide.  Ray Downs, the AAFES Knife and Tool buyer of 20+ years, worked with Stuart and Tim to first place the Pocket Survival Tool in the AAFES ordering system.

The tool sold well, especially variations with blasting cap crimpers, but over time Ray encouraged the team at Leatherman to provide clamshell packaging for items to help buyers ‘see’ their tools up front and when they did, sales took off.

AAFES became the single largest buyer for Leatherman and their significance was that they could get product onto the battlefield within 48 hours whereas SOCOM, the government issuance system, would take months due to purchasing protocols for the US Armed Forces.

In 2004, with their working relationship decades old now, Stuart brought this Super Tool 200 to Ray for a limited run to be sold with AAFES.  The handles are etched respectively: Operation Iraqi Freedom, 1 of 5000.  The plier head is consistent with tools that wouldn’t be made for stateside fulfillment at the time since “USA” had been ground out as a result of a previous court case in California.  Due to the black oxide coating on this unit, there was concern for AAFES as to how well the tool would hold up in the field.  Ray informed Stuart that he was traveling to Iraq for 6 months and that he would carry it with him as a trial run.  Upon his return Ray decided not to pick up the order of 5000 units since the black oxide had shown signs of wear greater than the government standard at the time.  They continued to work together until Stuart retired in 2011.”

This past week I picked up a new to me ST200. I am pretty excited to have it. Over the past couple of days I have been slowly working on it and getting it ready to enter the carry rotation. Today, I had to tighten the pivot on the pliers. When I got it there was a lot of slop in the pliers and the tips were twisted. So, about six or seven whacks with a ball peen hammer and a large drift  punch to the pivot got rid of the slop. Didn’t have any luck with getting the twist out of the tips, so I gently took a file to reshape the tips. When I got close to where the tips looked good, I switched over to sand paper until I was satisfied with the results. Then I moved on to the handles and sanded out the heavy scratches and the dings from being dropped on concrete. Once, the handles were sorted, I sharpened the blades and finished up with deep cleaning and lubricating the pivots. Very happy with how this turned out.

Thanks Pancho, Its been a lot of work, worth the effort, and fun. There is just something relaxing and zen in refurbishing a tool and putting it back to use.

Thanks McStitchy, Yes, this is my first ST200. I am still in the process of getting to know it. I have quite a few original Super Tools and ST300. I find the lock to be pretty stiff to use, but that could just be my example. I do like the sheep’s foot style serrated blade over the Super Tools serrated blade. I appreciate that the ST200 is so similar to the original Super Tool.

I also like the similarity to the original Super Tool (my first LM).
The lock lever can feel a little stiff. Some get used to it and lkke it and some not. It seems a fifty/fifty thing between that.
I do like it. And if it doesn't work for you you can still do it the old way like on the originals. It's basically the same lock but with an additional assistance.
