Title: Advice on strap replacement for cheap Casio
Post by: Don Pablo on July 29, 2018, 12:11:43 AM
I have a Casio F-91w with broken straps, any advice on replacements?
I know a new watch is about £15, but it seems wasteful to buy a new one just because the straps broke. ;)

Replacement strap-wise, I’m open to anything from buying the stock straps somewhere, or aftermarket straps, or even making my own straps. I’m all ears.

Huh, when my Timex Expedition's leather strap started smelling nasty, I put the velcro strap from a cheap Armitron it.  I'd go with a cheaper NATO band. Sure the F-91w is a cheapo watch, but I know many who have been using that model for 20 years.

I like my cheapo casios, but I don't bother replacing the strap any more, as I did a few times but not that long after broke the case where the pins for the strap goes in (on a couple of different watches).  I think the plastic/resin of the case gets brittle after a few years, and if you snag the watch on something they break. So I just buy a new watch these days.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I’ll keep the possibility of the watch case breaking in mind. :salute:
Paracord might be too thick, I wonder.
NATO strap sounds nice and slim. :tu: Are there different kinds? And if I choose one, what part of the watch do I measure to make sure it’s the right size?

Nato or Zulu straps are your best bet since Casios usualy use pins that are not comparable to standard spring bars.

You measure the width between the 2 strapholders in milimetres and order a Nato or Zulu strap from the same width.

Look both types up on google.
They give the same look, but aren't the same.

18mm on that one, a G10 will fit fine :tu:

Well, finally ordering a cheap G10 off the e-prey. :D
I hope I'm not making a mistake by opting not to include a purchase of "Optional spring bars are 1.5mm diameter double flanged and supplied in packs of 4 + Tool".

Got a cheap 18mm strap. It was a very snug fit, I had to crease the strap to make enough clearance for the pins, and I also had to press the pins against the strap to guide them into the hole. I consider it a bit irreversible.
The case may still break from the stress sometime.  :D

Ok, ok.  :P

I'm probably hosed when it comes time to replace the battery...  :dwts: We'll see.

Casio says that the battery should last 7 years with moderate use of the Alarm and Light. I bought the watch in 2015, so it should last another while.  :tu:
Wikipedia claims that the battery has been known to last 10 years or more with no use of the alarm and light. I have not found a corroborating source though.
