What i did today?

After three hours of sleep last night, i decided to take my bicyckle, and go flea market hunting today. First i went to local market to return broken plane that i got couple days ago. Market yard had nice soup lunch for six euro,  and i got my tummy filled. Got better plane, and wood saw with fine tooths for woodwork.

After dinner i went for the flea markets. Nothing ecceptional from the first one, only three files, and a nice small pincers. Never seen this small ones. Pictures to come...

Second flea market was bit better. I found child lock for Abloy lock, and good skillet pan for cooking.

After rain settled, i headed first to post office. Nate, there is something headed to you finally.

Got to market, and got some bread and sider.

Main thing why i got to town, was me and my wifes wedding anniversary. So i bought some red roses for her.

Now i am sitting on park bench sweating. And enjoying my sider.

Sider was cheap and good. If you ever get lost, and find yourself near my location, i will buy you a cheap sider and give good directions to home.

Bike is two months old Nopsa Highway. Got it from Intersport from spring sale. Got deal of two maintenances within year. I think it will need that.

i have seen photos of it, and i think you really should consider something lighter to ride...

Mine is not that light, but rolls so effortlessly... I am pulling wagon with my children on it. Plus all groceries. So i might want to change my tires for better soon...

Ah, so this is a blog thread? Fun idea!

Some fora have a blog feature built in. Maybe def will consider doing it here with some of the surplus operational funds? ;)

:tu: on the biking and skillet. A good weight loss plan is to try to do (most of) one's shopping from a bicycle. Make an exception for toilet paper and heavy liquids, but make a trip every day or so on the bike, instead of one massive car trip per week or two. Maybe obesity isn't such a problem in Finland as it is in the USA... As a side bonus, I find myself buying and eating a little bit less, but higher quality stuff than before. Shopping at Whole Foods instead of Costco, for example.

Yes, that was the plan. Writing little diary along the way. Nothing big.

I am a yoyo dieter. And few years ago i found biking again. Started to take work trips with bike. But every year it pulls so much snow, that winters are off. Alltough there is usually that much of it, so i get exersize from that.

You are rigt about food, and drink. Watch what you eat and drink, and small amounts at a time, will keep your weight in balance.

I was at our family cabin for the weekend.  Day we got there was sunny but windy. We just warmed the place, sauna and water to use. Had great time with kids and wife.

Late at night it started that bloody rain again, so we left to see granny and  great granny. No reason to sit inside four walls with nothing to do...

Picrures may follow, if i get to rezize them...

Pretty much every finnish guys' dream cabin: cabin, sauna and a fire pit by the lake.. Good for  :drink:, setting things on fire (ie. the sauna) and/or sometimes relaxing (depending on the mosquito population) or even exercise (killing the said mosquitoes) :D

Well, this weekend was something else. Wifey and kids are out, and my father decided to come over. We went to recyckling center, and flea market hunting. Father got two books he was searching. I bought hand crank drill, and socket set for a good price. I have to say, that i gifted them to my father, because he was drooling after them, and it was sad thing to watch. So thank him for no pictures.

I have trade going on, and we went to shop close by that sells Mora knives. Ended getting three new Mora knives.

Last night went fixing fathers car, grilling, and getting great hang over. Bloodyhell. I dont remember this kind of hang over in long time. Whole day has gotten just laying on sofa.

Drool over my dinner.

Have i said anything good of my skillet? I have been using it quite much recently. It is little small for anything for a family, but something small for all, or big for myself, it works beautiful.

One day, when i find bigger one, we will enjoy it. Heck, i used this on my charcoal grill last weekend, and before. Not something you want to do on your teflon pan...

I'm at work abroad today, visiting a Swedish manufacturer.

I don't remember how the conversation turned this way, but the salesman told me that Finns are different from Swedes, Danish, and Norwegians. He said the Norwegians, Danish, and Swedes all sound pretty much the same to him, but that the Finns sound totally different.

You might say: "Of course! We are from a different country!" But please realize that you are from the same area of the world, and in our minds, we mostly bunch you all together as The Scandinavians. It's ignorant and wrong, I know, but that's kind of the way it is. (now a bunch of people will rush forward to say it is only me who thinks this way...)

He also said that "Finns are different; just weird, somehow." Coming from a sales guy, that doesn't mean much. They are so quick to try to satisfy everyone, make everyone feel good, try to be very mainstream. They always know the right thing to say at the right time, and never seem to say anything awkward, like I do all the time.

Looking at your thread and those of one or two other Finns here, I think maybe he means that Finns like camping out and cooking on a skillet more than other Scandinavians, hehehe.

Keep 'em coming, and please let me know what is in your skillet. It looks like bacon and eggs, but I'm sure it's something else.

@Smaug He is telling you true things. Our language sounds nothing like our scandinavian friends. And our personalities are way different too. Maybe we could be looked more like baltic countries as language and behaviour.

One thing you must know from history. Sweden and Russia has fought many times in past to whom Finland belongs to. Last we were part of Russia, at late 1800, early 1900. We got our own money 1860. And independence 1917. This has had huge influence on becoming whom we are. We have had wars with Russia after our independence, but we have kept them out, keeping our independence.

I would suggest you read this comics http://satwcomic.com/ Scandinavia and the World.
it is fun comic to read, and it basically shows in satire what kind of people live in skandinavia and neighbourhood. Read also what drawer has to say. It explains a lot.

Casio watch i have been wearing for last week. Good functions, and so light you can't feel you are wearing it.

Gerber Freehand. Only light used, washed and oiled, works like charm. I only have couple Gerber tools, but i like their feeling. I own Flik, and allways loved how it worked. Lets see how Freehand does all her chores.

Everything else? We will see in time, what comes up...

So, my wife insisted that i take my motorcyckle out for this summer. So yesterday was first day it had insurance. Modest 30 km ride yesterday to get all juices flowing. Beautiful cool sunny day. Everything ok with the bike. Today 80 km to her parents cabin, her with our car, me with bike. Nice dry and cloudy. Evening 80 km back with passenger(her brother), wet and cold. Poored all way back. My poor Honda. We got home ok.

Whole summer it has winded so hard nearly every day. It is one of coldest summers for couple decades now. Nothing i have planted grows, because it is too cold and wet. No berries in forests to pick up for winter. When we get sun, it is still cold cause it is windy. So we are having poor summer so far.

I have that Casio watch too; I'm wearing it now. I love the feature set and lack of a seconds hand.

The timer is especially useful. The stopwatch should go longer than one hour though, and the backlight should also be designed to illuminate the hands, but as  a watch collector, I'm admittedly picky.

I miss my motorcycling days, but my family insisted I give it up until my kids are older. There's too many drunks and people who are "driving while intexticated" here. As a whole, Americans are TERRIBLE drivers.

Sounds like you had a good time this weekend. My son and I are going to go for a hike in a minute, and look for a chance to use our SAK saws. :-)

I wish we would have weather to comp with t-shirts outside... Only couple days so far...

This is a great watch. But there is a lack of functions i would want it to have. Plus there is the thing my wife said... She said that, that plastick watch is driving he off. If i want to have some, take that plastick off of wrist :D... I,  and her  are more into metal stuff. So, this watch is going to get only work time on wrist...

I could say  that  everywhere you drive, you really need to look over your shouldier. When you are on road with your bike, you should think that nobody can drive, or see you when you are on your bike... This gives you some reason to survive on road. I don't know what it is, but people on car can not see motorcycklist on road.

I think you should get yourself motorcyckle, and get some miles for it. It gives so much pleasure, and enjoyment for your own time. I dont know how to express it, but it is just so relaxing and gets you out of your routines...

Been busy week. Atleast when it was not raining.

Tuesday i starter working on my garage building, that i rent. I am meaning to paint all wooden parts, including windows. i managed to do one side rasping and cleaning, and my neighbour comes and says last storm torn one big branch from my oak tree. Damn thing was still hanging up almost 5 meter high. Guess whom had to climb up there to cut it off... While i was up, i decided to cut few other bad condition branches off. Bloody operation took two hours including taking branches to city compost.

Well, next day i notice someone leaving his car next to road, and goes walking and looking around. Ofcourse i go asking what he is up to. He is towns lumberjack and he is going to cut off unwanted willows and trees. Just cleaning place, down. So i start asking if they could cut bad rotten trees around my property. Trees are on towns property and i fear some storm will take them down on my garage. He says to call his boss, what i did. Talking to the guy we agree, that they cut trees down, and i get to keep them for little money.

Couple days now, when not raining, i have been collecting trees to be made for fire wood. Same time i have been cleaning my garage building to be painted,  and cleaning its surroundings from garbage.

Did i mention, that carnival is in town? Oh yes. Today whole family went to carnival with bike. And yes, It was raining. But we got lucky, we got to take our girls to few machines,  and have fun without getting wet. They are soon turning three years old, so they were all over the place. I love those smiles, when are having so much fun. Couple ice creams, wether it was so cold. And hot chocolate drink to get us warmed up again.

Light came inside this cardboard box. First when you open it, you'll see light, batteries and roll guard. Underneath there is lanyard,  and user guide with warranty info.

Roll guard is nice feature that you can easily put on and take off by unscrewing battery cap.

Lanyard is nice and thick, but end that you attach it to torch is thin and long.

More of this light, when i get to use it some more.

Last weekend had a big carboot sales happening near town to us. Whole family decided to go. Wife wanted to go because she and kids could go swimming at the spa, and i wanted to dig through rusty gold.

I did manage to get few needed things.  Mostly there was beautiful old cars and motorcycles to see, and some overpriced antiques as sellers claimed their broken stuff to be.

Anyways, this what i got.

What is the bottom tool? Looks like like a pick, but it seems like the metal head would easily come off the handle...  ???

Axe is actually quite small, so might make others look bigger than they are.

That is a pickaroon. Used for lifting logs. Head does not come off easily.  It is held in place by just two nails, and sits there rather good. Now it is bit loose, but I will have to fix it a bit. Great tool for its purpose.

I have not been so active lately. I have been working on my properties. My garage building is on work, and i have been painting it. Work goes on slowly, mostly because my back hurts so much.

Anyhow, i have scratched old loose paint off now. I have painted once with base coat, and around windows with one primary coat. I think two or three days and i have painted most wooden parts two times with primary coats.

This leaves one wall to think what to do with it. It is old door which has not been used. Doors are in poor condition, and i want to dissassemble them. For now i have no willing to do this extra work, and i think i will just paint them over once more, to get them going for a couple years. Then they just have to be torn down.

And my back,  and everything just hurts...

Thank you, i will.

Stuff just keeps piling up this year. There is so much fire wood to cut down, and chop down for this fall. I bought bunch of it from city.

Not many knows, that i had one year off of work. I wanted to relax, and enjoy looking after my twin daughters. Now in three weeks, i will be heading back to work.

Nice rusties Mate  :tu:

Sorry to read about your back problems. Take it easy, or you'll be in misery when you go back to work.

Good decision about the door, I think.

About the firewood, do you have a chainsaw? That makes a lot of the work go easier. Maybe consider a power log splitter too...

I do have a chainsaw. Right now those woods have been cut to three meter long, and i will cut them down to 35 cm. I will get hydraulic splitter for loan,   that presses 3 tons of force to split those logs. Good thing is, i will get help with making them. That hydraulic splitter is pain and slow to use alone. Rather use axe if i am doing them alone.

I split all my firewood with an axe.  For the last 30 years I used the typical heavy maul style splitter, but recently have been using a Fiskars X27 and it was splitting the logs so easily I also bought an X25 - this has a shorter handle and so is easier to swing and more accurate.  I find it (X25) has enough splitting power to do over 90% of my logs (and some of our Aussie eucalypts have that horrible crinkly grain that is difficult to split).  It certainly has made splitting easier on my back.  Note that I'm a big bloke and can exert a lot of hitting power if I wind up (but not always as accurate as I'd like). YMMV

If your wood is very easy to split I've seen a few videos of people using tyres to hold logs while you make multiple strikes (saves picking up pieces after each hit), that might also be worth considering to make life easier.

I have Fiskars X17 i think. Used heck out of it, and it splits even bigger and wet logs. Been thinking of getting X25. Went to store and handled both X25 and X27, and i just might go with X25 for its shorter easier handle. Most wood is birch, so it is hard wood with reasonable amount of branches.

I have one huge log from previous years, but no tire on it. That sounds good idea worth to try, thank you.

Looks it might rain on thursday, so will see if i can apply second before that. And i hope there is enoug paint left for second coat.

I want to thank Mike 56 for a nice trade we did.  :hatsoff: Thank you sir. I hope yours arrives soon.

This morning me and the kids went to kindergarden to see the place. They are starting it in ten days. We stayed there for three hours. They did not want to leave, had so much fun playing.

We just got from swimming with whole family. Kids enjoyed warm kiddies pool, and i enjoyed from hot pool, and waterjets. Sore muscles got good beating. Hopefully good night ahead of us.

Well, last 18 hours has not been kind to me. Last night my daughter showed signs of getting sick. All night she was restless and crying quite much. Today was carboot sale day. When it is possible in this town, i am selling my stuff there. Things like old kids clothes, home apparels some tools and knives and multis., stuff i do not need anymore. My wife usually joins me selling clothes.

Morning started slow and tired, because of night. We were going out, and put my light trailer to my car. Said to wife to take it front that i can close garage door. All allright. Then said to back it off the road. Did signal her. Showed to back up and yelled so. Yelled and showed to stop, and louder yelles to stop. Aaand she backs up to garage door... Worst part was that i was between tailer and door...

NEVER BE BEHIND WOMAN THAT BACKS UP A CAR!!!

Aanyway. I saw what was going to happen, and i jumped much as i could. Not enough though. My right shank got on the middle, and i heard a pop. Hehee. I had to go to er to let doc examine my leg. I should of trusted myself and not go there. Little over 30€ and 2 mnutes with the doc, he says i got lucky. I knew no broken bones, but was little afraid of muscles and things that keep them in place, i got lucky.

After doc we went to carboot sales. And my leg is killing me... Put our sales point good, and things start to look good. After awhile we start to get good sales. I get few knives for sale at good price, and wife sells our kids stuff. Couple next are kind and good company. I ended buying table sanding machine from him, and traded toolbelt for knife. I got myself little time, and limbed to look what others had forsale. I ended buying  led lenser sheat for 2€ and axe for 1€. Ok deals for me.

It is not unusual for sellers to leave before given time, so first ones were packing at one pm when sales was to last 2.30 pm. We started to pack 2.00 pm and nice people next to us gave tea set that my wife was looking earlier. And boy, the husband was trying to sell everything to us  :D And there was lots of it... No luck for him... Boy my leg hurts...

We got to my wifes parents, and they looked after our twins when we were selling our stuff. Got nice meal, and gave that axe to father inlaw. He was very happy about it. I was talking to my father, and he wants that table sander from me...

Now i am laying on my couch with my leg up, and kids beating me. Oh glory day. And boy my leg is bruised...

Count your blessings that the leg isn't broken, whatever else happened!

These boot sales you guys have are a really good idea. It would be nice if we could have them here, but I don't believe they're legal! (probably because the main people who sell stuff out of their boots (trunks, as we call them) are gangsters selling guns.

I just got back from visiting my sister in California. The weather is warm and dry there, but not too variable. Same thing every day. Sunny and dry. Here, we have beautiful clouds, green plants and trees, and temperature and humidity varies a lot. (sometimes, that's good, sometimes bad)

I forgot to mention. I got myself new carpenters toolbelt with pockets.

When I was an electrical technician, I did this for a while, before I discovered MTs. I had lineman and needlenose pliers, wire stripper, four dedicated screwdrivers, a tape measure, and electrical tape. It was enough to make my back sore from having more weight on one hip compared to the other.

If I were to do it again, I would carry a Surge w/bits for the incidentals and just roll my toolbox over for heavier-duty stuff. Or maybe a fanny pack.

I forget what your job is; not sure if that would work for you.

@Smaug i really have never mentioned what i do for living. I am multitasker for my company. My main job is to maintain and inspect fire extinguishers,  sell everything that has anything to do with  fire safety at home or companies. I maintain and inspect about anything that works with gases. I maintain and inspect about anything within safety products. I maintain caravans, and anything within them, and sell anything that has got anything to do with them. My company sells used cars and new and used caravans, so i maintain and keep everything in selling condition.

I would call that an indoor grill, since the grease drips away from the meat.

One more thing worth to mention. We recently got ourselves trained to fix Mosquito Magnet devices. Quite impressive traps.

Maybe someday i will tell you what kind of jobs i used to do :D you would be surprized... I am just idiot that does every given job.

I think,  if i get that grill plate coated as good as i got my other cast irons, cleaning will not be too hard. I got my others so good, that eggs slide easily when cooking.

Just read a bit on them. They sound very effective, since mosquitoes are attracted to the CO2 that we exhale.

Probably more effective, but less entertaining than electric bug zappers.

How did you coat yours? Just by not using soap when washing it?

I'm trying to do this on my cast iron skillet and wok, but my wife and son keep using soap and undoing my "hard work."

I agree that it feels wrong at first, but it is like a natural non-stick coating.
Title: Re: Crow's nest
Post by: Crow on September 15, 2015, 04:15:47 PM
True, not that entertaining as zappers. But works very well.

I did some pre oil burning for the coating. Youtube has some good instructions on it. I think it was culinary fanatic that had best instructions. Search seasoning cast iron skillet. If seasoning is done right, you could wash it with light dish soap, but better if not.

I use my oven and sunseed oil for seasoning. Heat oven to 250 Celsius throw skillet in. When hot apply light coat of oil, let cool do not let oil drop. When cooled, wipe exxess oil off, and repeat heating, oiling and cooling. Repeat as many times as you want, more and seasoning gets better. I think atleast five rounds is nesessary. You could use non salted fat instead of oil.

To check seasoning i make either eggs or bacon. After using skillet i just wipe it clean when it is still warm.

I would like to see your cast iron. How big is your skillet you use?

Been rather busy at work lately. This evening me and girls went outside and loved light up our charcoal grill with pine woodchips. I threw rusty grill plate in to sanitize and take rust off. Had it burn couple hours. Then i took drill and wire brush bit to take all excess rust out. Washed with dish soap and steel wool, and threw it in owen. Had two coats of sunseed oil, and now it is cooling off. Maybe tomorrow after work i do couple rounds more.

Tell you the truth , my wife is about to kill me for making so bad burnt smell in the house.

Haha, Crow has discovered how to season cast iron and is going nuts with it! :D

My grill has a cast iron grate. Here's what I do, maybe you've tried it too:

When warming up the grill, my neighbors always comment that what I'm cooking smells delicious!  I just smile, because they're only smelling the grease and sauces from my last meal burning off. :D

Oh, back on topic. My point from the big list was just that the burned grease and sauces from the previous meals keep the iron sealed against rust. No need to stink up the house by properly seasoning it.

Haha, Crow has discovered how to season cast iron and is going nuts with it! :D

My grill has a cast iron grate. Here's what I do, maybe you've tried it too:

  • First time I used it, coat with oil as recommended by the manufacturer
  • After that, whatever drips on it from my food, I just leave it on
  • Next time cooking, I pre-heat the grill for at least 10 minutes on maximum heat. Some of the left-over sauce and grease gets burnt onto the grate
  • Before putting the raw food on, get the wire brush and brush off most of the burnt, loose ashes
  • At the beginning of the next spring, take the grate off and brush it really well: top, bottom, and between the grate openings
  • Also at the beginning of the next spring, get my paint scraper and scrape out all the grease from the bottom of the inside of the grill
  • Several times throughout the season, clean out the drip pan, usually with the paint scraper. Throw the grease in the weeds for the raccoons. :)

You are right, i am little nuts on it. I keep looking old skillets at fleas.

You must be using gas grill? I think you could wipe most stuff off with cloth(maybe drop of food oil on it) when still warm, so you would not have to brush it so much. I have charcoal grill, and i too tend to leave all residue on it. Alltough all dripping grease will fall down on charcoal. So no cleaning there. Just brush wire every now and then.

That reminded me. My charcoal grill rusted down after three seasons. Got myself new one on fall sales. I will leave it in packet till spring.

We were talking about cast iron cookware before. Crow asked for pix of mine. I had it in the back of my mind, and finally got around to snapping and uploading a couple of shots.

Here's our skillet, which we use at least 5 days per week. This morning, it cooked scrambled eggs with butter, oregano, salt, pepper, and some salt-free organic seasoning I picked up at Costco: (it's not that good)

(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q112/jzorns/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsi5veqgq0.jpg) (http://s134.photobucket.com/user/jzorns/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsi5veqgq0.jpg.html)

...and here's one of our cast iron woks. This one is made by Lodge, which is an old, famous American brand of cast iron cookware. I've got my mind on a Lodge dutch oven for the future. Lodge casts them nice and thick, even, and with no voids, and they come pre-seasoned. Notice the inside of it is 100% round, but the bottom is flat, to fit well on our American stove tops. (Chinese stoves only have two burners, and they are bigger, round, and more evenly heated. More heat too.) This is a great equalizer, because since our burners don't put out as much heat, we can get the wok very hot, and it ends up searing the food just as well as an evenly-heated Chinese burner and a cheap wok. Keeping it hot is another story, but we do what we can with what we have, right? (Explorer Plus is shown for size reference)

(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q112/jzorns/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsx70e6fct.jpg) (http://s134.photobucket.com/user/jzorns/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsx70e6fct.jpg.html)

(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q112/jzorns/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsqdltvfyi.jpg) (http://s134.photobucket.com/user/jzorns/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsqdltvfyi.jpg.html)

I try to keep it seasoned by just not using soap when I wash it; I just use water and something to scrub. But my wife washes it with soap when I'm not looking. When I'm done washing it, I just heat it over the flame again until the water evaporates.

We don't have any exhaust fan for cooking, so I don't dare try the oven seasoning method.

Good looking irons. If you have charcoal grill, you could try seasoning there.

I have in mind to make outdoor kitchen one day. There cast iron will really be put in good use.

Last week i found nice big kettle, that i will have to work on before use.

For a five veeks i have been carrying Mora Clipper with me. I carry it on a jean button wich i put close to seam on my work trousers. Easy to take off when needed.

I had good old knife at my work toolbox, but someone seems to loan it, and misplaced it. So i took this beat up Clipper and gave a good scrub and sharpening to it. It has still few big nicks on the blade, but works as a beater really nicely.

I am really impressed, how good it holds an edge. I have been using it really hard everyday. And have to say, it all is not wood that has been cut.

This is what came in mail today. Hunters quide with law book(two books), and deck of cards showing animals that can be hunted in Finland. Picrures are painted both in cards and book.

Which game animal(s) will you be going after, and with what kind of gun?

I went squirrel hunting once, with my .22 rifle. Got a small one with a head shot. The hunt was more fun than the meal; he was a tough little smurf, after he was fried up. I'm told it's best to pressure-cook or slow-cook them, otherwise, they're tough. But I didn't bring my pressure cooker to the campsite, only the frying pan.

Went after white-tailed deer a few years ago with my 44 Magnum revolver. Saw a couple that were too far off for a shot, in thick woods. Froze my ASS off. Hats off to those buggers for surviving the cold up here.

I think i will go for small game, birds and rabbits. Few years i have been asked to join moose hunting organisation (is that right term?). But distance to go hunting is rather long, and the time it takes to participate. I think i still refuge joining them.

I have been offered three guns already by family members, but we will see what comes, if comes. I am not taking this too seriously for time being. Guns that were offered were Browning pump action shotgun, Single shot shotgun and 7mm rifle. Last two are really old, so pump action shotgun and maybe rifle would get some use.

Here it is notlegal to hunt with hand guns. And it is real pain to get licence even for the smallest ones. You really need to think what you wear when you walk in the cold :D

Usually when meat is tough, i coock it with skillet, give it good crispy cover. Then add water on pan, and boil it atleast 45 min. When water has almost vaporiced, add cream and you have tasty sauce.

Nice weekend with family. Yesterday we went outside, and i stacked wood into piles. They rested a bit too long on ground, and now was last moment to get them stacked.

Afterwards i made some meatballs with girls, and some bread. Delicious.

This morning we got up and baked some pancakes. Sweet and some salty. Then little walk out, and nice nap.

Regarding the hunting, I think you're wise to go for the small game.

Not only is it not such a big commitment for traveling, but those little animals are much easier to haul out of the woods than a moose. Moose hunters in Canada usually cut the moose in at least 5 parts prior to pulling them out of the woods: head, and the body quartered. Even then, I bet it's damned heavy. I think they weigh up to 1500 lbs. (680 kg)

I bet a lot of our fat hunters in the US get heart attacks while dragging animals out of the woods...

With small game, you still get to enjoy the hunt, enjoy (a bit of) the fruits of your labor, and get outside too. Also, only a light load in a shotgun or a 22 rifle is needed: low recoil.

It was long day yesterday. Me and my wife left early at work, and went to see used car. Hour and a half drive on a icy road to see it. Sun was shining quite low towards us, wich made little challenge of its own because there was still some dirt flying with traffic. Anyway, seller was nice and honest telling everything about the car, and we ended buying it from him. Guy had come to see us next tow,  so we had to give him lift back home, about half hour trip one way. Now this car had summer wheels on it, and seller was so nice that he changed winter wheels on it before we left.

We left sellers place, and went shopping christmas gifts and clothes for our girls. Got couple bags of everything and headed home. Way home was dark and icy, but car worked really nicely. We were home little past eight pm, and so tired.

So, now we are happy owners of Honda Accord tourer. I sure know what i am going to do this weekend.

So, what did i do today?

I washed both of my cars, cleaned them inside, and gave two wax coatings for newcomer.

Ford will go forsale as soon as possible. Untill then Honda will be at reserve, and i will work on it to fix all flaws it has.

I have allways been fan of Honda Accords. This one is third Accord that i own. I have allways found them to be most reliable cars there is.

It is always good to hear about good sellers and smooth transactions. Now a days is so easy to find people (at least where I live) lying to their eyeballs on how good a terrible product is. Not to mention the rudeness and lack of courtesy they present.

I'm glad were able to get a good deal. I hope you enjoy it!!!

Happened last week when i was inspectioning fire extinguishers at local family center. I was holding extinguisher upside down on my arm/shoulder and writing with other. Lady comes through door, we say hello and she says "oh,  i thought you were carrying a child". I look funny and say "If you had came sooner you would have seen me banging this extinguisher with a hammer on top". Lady starts laughing and says "Eww, i would have made alarm out of you, and call security". We both laughed as she walked off. :D

My boss and coworkers had shizz stroke when i told this to them... Probably still laughing their minds out.

So, now we are happy owners of Honda Accord tourer. I sure know what i am going to do this weekend.

Congratulations. My car is a Honda Accord EX. Best care I've ever owned. (including a Honda CRX, Honda Civic, Toyota Matrix, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Rogue, Toyota Prius C, and Mazda MX-5 "Miata")

The Accord is as quick as the Miata, and has less body roll and of course more useful room.

The only one that is even close is the Matrix, and it was absolutely gutless in 4th and 5th gears.

Just change the oil and try to keep it from rusting out, and you'll be well-satisfied with it.

Touring = station wagon, right?
Title: Re: Crow's nest
Post by: Crow on November 18, 2015, 06:20:13 AM
Yes, tourer is station wagon. This is a bit smaller than Ford Mondeo wagon hat we still have as main car. I had Toyota Avensis before Mondeo, and that bugger was lazy. Great car in all, but lazy. Driven few Toyotas, and all of them has had little hoping for engine performance. Great cars nevertheless.

Few years back i owned Honda Prelude for a two weeks, and ended crashing it(was not my fault). Loved that thing, and was going to have it for awhile. Ended having motorcyckle after it. Honda Magna VF750C.

Busy times here. Been snowing for couple weeks, but now temperatures has risen again, so all has melted off. It would be so much nicer if ground was frozen. Now everything is muddy and dirty all the time. It is difficult to drive at dark hours when all light disappeares to wet dirt.

Speaking of ligh. Led Lenser that i won this years giveaways has seen some use. Tried to take some dark hour photos with my phone camera, but they did not come out too good. I will get some more use for it, and talk about it some more.

Last wednesday me and wife got some time together and used my fathersday gift. She got us tickets to Heavy Christmas concert. It was two and half hours of top finnish metal artists singing christmas songs. Usually i do not care about christmas songs, but this was pure awesomeness of metal music.

Today we went to yearly christmas market with our kids. Bought bunch of salty pastries, meatpie and dark bread for us to enjoy.

After we got all the snow pushed out of the way, we went shopping. I bought two motion detector led light to our backyard. One i just mounted on top of garage door, but for other i need to run some electric wires.

Friday, and fixing car's at work.

First one came to be sold at our shop. Little rust hole needed to be welded. Turned out to be a big hole. Well, that is done. Next i need to put new water pump in it, and all belts.  These Isuzus do not hold up in these climates.

Next is Citroen Jumper, new tension adjusters for belt. Easy one. I hope.

Oh, i sold my car last night, and will give it to new owner this weekend. So evening goes cleaning it. I had to take cheaper car in trade, but seemes it might move soon to a new owner. I hope. For awhile it seemed that money was going to be tight this christmas, but little luck seemes to come my way.

Maybe couple pics to be added later of todays projects.

This has been poor beginning for this winter. Few good snow rains, but temperatures too warm for snow to stay. Hope this stays on ground for christmas.

I was playing with this generic multitool bit adapter, and noticed it was fitting on many mainstream multis. I tried it on Leathermans, Gerbers, Victorinox and some unknown. Mostly it fitted on pliers giving great torsion on screws mostly used. I tried it on PST flat driver and pliers, Fuse phillips and pliers, MP600 phillips, Freestyle/flick flat and pliers, Surge and Wave pliers and flat bit driver, Vic Spirit and Swisstool phillips drivers. All of them this generic driver worked ok. Turned screws good. Normal bits worked great.

Back in the days, me and my brother used one all the time in the winter. I was grown on countryside, and no salt was used, and sand used very rarely. Now i live in city, and all is either salted or very well sanded. This is why i got it wide  slides under it. When new snow comes, it is slippery goer, lots of speed. My girls love riding it.

I took two days off, and went to search work walking from door to door. I went about twenty or more places, and with three places i was offered work for few months at time. One place was middle of expanding, so there could be something more permanent. Will have to go there again later...

Last wednesday me and wife got some time together and used my fathersday gift. She got us tickets to Heavy Christmas concert. It was two and half hours of top finnish metal artists singing christmas songs. Usually i do not care about christmas songs, but this was pure awesomeness of metal music.

Was Nightwish there? I quite like them, though they've lost some of their uniqueness since they kicked Tarja out.

Sorry to hear of the lay-off. Yes, while you're looking, look for something more permanent. Family life demands a steady paycheck, and you have SO many skills to offer. Do look and apply places online, in addition to door-to-door.

Hey man. Where have you been? You have been missed... You know, there is thread of wondering where you are...

No, Nightwish was not there. Neither was Marco Hietala, alltough i would of liked to see him... I loved first years of Nightwish, and the rise of them. I still like them, but early years was best for me.

As for looking for work. I am looking for any opportunity get permanent job, as soon as possible. I will take short time works in between. I want to work, and i will get my life in track in any way possible. I might get possibility to re-educate me.

Potato cakes today. Notice spatula that is self made.

These are easy to make, and really tasty. Good and easy food for outdoors.

You need
4 cups left over potato mash
2 cups barley flour
Half teaspoon salt
One egg

250 Celsius for 10-15 minutes

It is easy to give it different tastes by seasoning your potato mash. Try chives or mustard seeds, or what ever comes to mind, even crispy bacon bits. They taste nice on these cakes.

Did you check in with any other Finnish members? Or maybe consider joining a Finnish MT or SAK forum, if there's such a thing. I'm told networking is the best way to get a job. The thing is building the network.

Do you have a LinkedIn account? That is a professional networking site; it can be helpful. (at least in the US)

I have interview tomorrow, but we will see if it leads to anything. Ther is couple places that said there could be something for summer. But what to do untill then.

I have not put myself up on sosial media. Or forums. I do not like to even use Facebook. Did check LinkedIn now that you mentioned it. Could be worth trying.

I shortened days on daycare for my girls, so they are home with me much more. Minus is that i don't get to go searching work when they are here. I did go and bought paint, so maybe we will paint couple walls together one day. :D

If nothing comes up, i will start fixing our apartment.

If nothing comes up, i will start fixing our apartment.

Here's a trick I used once on a landlord who used stupid painters who painted over electric receptacles and window locks: Ask the landlord if you can repair them and take the cost of parts out of the rent. My landlord said: "Sure, just include the receipts with your rent check."

So I did, and it worked out well for both of us.

Maybe you can deduct the parts from the rent too?
Title: Re: Crow's nest

When i rented, I used to ask for tools and paints, so i could do it myself. Nowdays we have our own apartment, so i need to get everything on my own. Good thing is, i can reduce everything on my accounting.

Yesterday i had an interview and it lead to another one tomorrow. Hope this leads to something.

That did cross my mind.  :D  i wish it could work that way.

I did go and talked to boss whom called me today, and explained situation. He gave me time to think things through, because he really wants me to this job, but understands if i refuse it in the end.

Very cool snow castle. Sometimes, we have snow sculptures here in the US, but they are roped off as art, with signs saying "do not touch." :-\

As for the jobs, how long is the first job for? (the one that requires travel?) If it is a LOT longer duration, I would take that one.

If it is just a little longer, I'd take the 3 month one. You'll save so much in commuting expenses, and also have a little time to plan what to do after the 3 months is up.

OH blade definantly is something i will be packing with me. Just wondering will i take Retki knife i have been carrying at previous jobs, or will i try something else. I usually carry Enlan el02 off work. Might take it with me.

As for multitool, thinking between Surge, Freehand, MP600 bluntnose and PPP.

And some dedicated food knife.

Anything else i could pack with me? I will take backpack with me, and few things will rest there. And i will travel by bicyckle.

First week at new work, and i like it there. Nice and friendly work mates, good work hours, lots of stuff to do.

My knife does not do so well with me. There is so much cutting, that it gets dull just after few hours. They did give me utility knife with cut off blades, wich i use very much. I use my Retki knife to mostly plastic and cardboard, and it dulls fast. Mostly sharpening it is just hohning it with cardboad corners, wich gives me some more using time with it. I really need to try more knives as work continues.

Yes they do.

This is what I use. 7,5 cm blade. Nice user, but kind of soft blade material. I think i will carry my Enlan el-02b for couple days. I have been looking Ganzo g727 reviews.  Might have to get one. Any suggestions on good user?

Title: Re: Crow's nest
Post by: Smaug on April 26, 2016, 06:08:34 PM
Well, I think I'd just use the issued work knives, with the snap-off blades. Let the company pay. ;)

Then, use your personal knife/MT as a back-up.

Working close to home is a big advantage; I think you made the right decision. It's worth real money, not to mention the fact that a short commute = more personal and family time.

One trick that my brother does is he gets combo-edge blades. We knife connoisseurs generally prefer a full plain edge, but with a combo, even when the plain edge gets dull, serrated still works until you can get to your sharpening rig. (though you do have to saw with it, instead of just zipping it through)
Title: Re: Crow's nest
Post by: Crow on April 26, 2016, 06:23:37 PM
Those things have no soul. I really prefer using my folder instead. I do use that cutter much, and i am looking what i cut with what.

I have had few partially serrated, and couple fully serrated knives, and i cant get myself liking those at all. Plane edge blades for me anyday, thank you.

I think this was best decision in the end. Everything is much easier now. Just walking distance to work, enough time for family afterwards. And no gas bills. (will have to talk my wife to start using bicyckle for work travels).  :D

Yes it was. Now it really is mine.

But it works really well. I was surpriced how well it carves wood. Only downside i saw, was that edge starts bit far off the handle. Maybe more curve should start closer to handle aswell.

Not strong yet. Like nice lemonade. Now i can let my kids have it. But wait few days more, and i say it rises to 8 percent or more.

For few years i have made this with my own recipe. Within first times i made this, and offered to my mother inlaw. She liked it wery much, and drank couple of glasses of it. Soon she started giggling, and she said she felt little light at the moment. After that first batch she would only take little taste of the batch, but would not drive or take full glass  of it. I wonder why is that :D

But it tastes really good...

Soon she started giggling, and she said she felt little light at the moment. After that first batch she would only take little taste of the batch, but would not drive or take full glass  of it. I wonder why is that :D

But it tastes really good...

Sound good!

I remember that the best bottles where the ones that had aged over a year.
Drinking too much of it gave me a serious hangover though :)

I have never had a bottle that has had time to age that well. But i can figure that yeast, when ageing, will give nice hangovers :D

Last couple of weeks i have made atleast three baches of mead. Today my wife made some really nice sugar doughnuts. Celebrating "labor day" / "first of may" with these goodies is traditional...

How big are your batches?
Mine where 20liters.

Not that much 1. Of may celebrations left here. I used to march in workers parades as a kid, but noone does that anymore.

Well, this is allways  party here, but some sugar doughnuts and soft mead has allways been family traditions.

I make about five litres of mead at a time. I am not looking for alcohol based drink. Just some good soft drink. Same as home brewed beer. Not that much of alcohol, but good thirst drink on a hot day.

Busy evening. Tried few things Sparky got me.

Sharpened the knife. Took nice edge. Cuts very well at garden, where it will be used mostly.

Gaz torch works like charm with both nozzles. Will use so much of this thing.

Small plane. Looked nice for quick look. And it was. I had to straighten the body, clean it, and give good sharpening to the edge. Works great now. Little more care needed for getting it shine.

Tape measure got cleaned and little oil on surfaces. No need to do anything more.

Folding measure got oil treatment with some 1500 grit sandpaper. Looks pretty, and clean now. And in my jacket pocket it will go...

Eclipse handle i just cleaned little. No thing else needed to do to it.

Bigger plane will have to wait untill i get inspiration to take it apart...

Visiting relatives is hard, i can tell you that. Never promice anything.

Yesterday we went for carboot sales happening. Lasts for three days. Found some really nice stuff. My father follows my footprints to certain things. Like knives and old tools. Me and my brother got him original Wave  at his 50th birthday. He still has it almost unused at safe. Anyway. We both went with my better half and kids. Wife and kids went their way, and we lucky got to go on ours. I found nice hand vice, wich i gave to my father. These vices are real rarities here. Small table vice, some pliers, old army oil bottles, plane wich name in english is unknown to me. Will post pics for you guys when i get my camera on.

My father got me nice old hammer. Really nice condition eccept handle, wich is usual for this old hammers.

Well. Too little time to tell everything now. Updates soon to come... with pics...

I was afraid i would have to get furniture oil for it. But i need it for something else also.

You've been busy! How's work going, more steady these days?

Planes, hammers, knives, axes, anvils... It seems you like anything from steel or iron.

Our cast iron wok gets used almost daily, by my wife. We're shopping for a new range, that can put out enough heat to properly cook on a wok. (at least 12,000 BTU, with a dual ring burner) Range hood is first though, see the latest post in my thread.

Work is going great these days. Got new job, and been enjoying working this place. It is hard on your body, but easy on mind.

I do love old tools, and love to use them.  :D

Have you thought of carbon wok? Might give nicer results with right burner. I hope that technician will install right ducting, and make it work good.

Good to hear! Still, keep your eyes open for a job that's not so hard on the body, as those jobs are not so good as you get on in years. I wanted to be an electrician, but my grandpa (who was an electrical foreman for many years) told me: "Nah, you don't want to be doing that when you're 60. Your knees'll be shot. (we have bad knees in my family)

Quote

No more woks for us. We have a thin cast iron one with a round bottom, a thick cast iron one with a thick bottom that's flat on the outside, and have tried some non-stick ones. (not hot enough) However, I think you're right, that it would be as good as an iron one. A lot lighter, but maybe not as much thermal mass to get up to temperature for searing the food over a flame that isn't quite hot enough.

On cast iron, is there a manufacture of cast iron that is of better quality in Europe?  In the states I search for a couple names that are no longer produce, and compete with Amish often at flea markets and auctions when I can.

There is some manufacturers that make better stuff you want to buy. There is much coming from china also, but i rather leave it be. Few names comes to mind, last picture of mine is UPO made in Finland. You could also see Skeppshult, Hackman and Le Creuset. Few places here do sell Lodge cast iron products.

Lodge is the only US made cast iron I believe.  It is good and I have a double skillet for the grill.  As well as a couple smaller.
I have learned that good cast iron will be as smooth as a baby's bottom, that is usually the best method to tell the quality.
Wagnar and Griswald are two brands that are desired and get good prices when at auction.

Crow, one question/comment re. seasoning of cast iron cookware:

The seasoning that you show, in the oven, only needs to be done before the first use.

After that, I keep it seasoned by just cooking on it, and leaving the oils, fats and other seasoning in the iron. (and by not washing it with soap.) I wash mine with water and a steel scrubbing pad after it cools a little, but not so long after that the food is hard to get off. Sometimes, I use a bit of salt as a scrubbing agent, but of course, be sure to rinse that all off.

Then, I dry it over the range top flame for a couple minutes.

Are you doing the oven seasoning because you are always getting more cast iron, or just because you like the seasoning to be very even?
Title: Re: Crow's nest
Post by: Crow on August 01, 2016, 07:04:28 PM
@Smaug

I do seasoning pictures here, because i get new cast iron from time to time. But. I might give repeat after some use, if there was need to scrub hard. So i washed and scrubber pan, i heated it in owen, oiled it, and quick seasoning to stay good.

Other than that, i mostly just wipe irons clean, and off to srorage. or wash with hot water if pan will not clean easy. Might use mild soap, then owen dry, and oil surfaces. No heat after oil when lightly cleaning.

Your methods are very similar to mine. I have not used that salt scrub yet, but i do recommend it. It is easier to your iron, than steel scrubbing pad would be.

Do you use salt on raw potato surface?
Title: Re: Crow's nest

Do you use salt on raw potato surface?

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Do you mean do I put the salt in a piece of potato to scrub with? No.

I always scrub with a stainless steel scouring pad. Most times, a light going-over is all it needs, and it's certainly not enough to take the seasoning out.

The rare times when I need to scub harder, it's enough to just oil it before cooking next time. It never gets to that terrible gray state.

Yesterday was last day of my contract for my latest job. With good memories and friends as coworkers i leave this place. I would of loved working there, but i was just a seasonal worker there. I know my boss would have wanted me to stay. But his bosses said no.

Last wednesday i had a call from workman rental company(what is this called in english?) . They asked how long i have contract left, and offered me a new job starting as my contract ends.

So. As of monday morning i start a new work as a truck driver at cleaning company that works at mining industry.

I am glad i got a new job. Sad parts are, that i have to travel 40 km one way to get there. Super dirty work. And. There is total no for knives. Only safe cutters are allowed. I try to cut stuff, and blade pulls itself in the handle.

Work is industrial cleaning at mine. Lots of dust and mud. And super dangerous Chemicals.

You're very good with your hands, Crow. Nice work.

Sorry to hear the new job seems dangerous. I'm sure you're using all the personal protective gear, so you don't get sick? Please keep looking for permanent work. Something local and not dangerous, and that requires a knife. I don't know what kind of town you live in, but is it a small town where you could hit the streets with a folder full of resumés and talk people up to see what they've heard?

I "saved" an axe handle a week ago. The axe was leaned against the outside of the garage. Someone had swung it at a steel post (the hammer end of it) and missed, and broke the handle right below the head. It is such nice, strong wood, (hickory) I couldn't bear to throw it out. I cut it off with my table saw, beveled the edges with my SAK, and now it is a club, in case needed for home defense.

Careful you don't buy more tools than you can use, just because they are a good deal. That's how the hoarding illness starts. My stepmom is a hoarder, and it's scary. She buys this nice new stuff because it's a good deal, then never even uses it. She even takes pride that it is still in perfect condition. Meanwhile, every spare corner of the house is packed full.

Smaug, i do wear every possible protective gear i can. This job should end up permanent job, if i want it to be. I will stay here for awhile, and see how it goes. And i will be looking something else at side.

Good wood is allways worth to save. Maybe you could make it as billhook. Adds another dimension to usefulness. And you still can use it for home defence and zombie apocalypse... >:D

As hoarding. Don't worry. I am getting rid of stuff i do not use. That is why i go selling at carboot sales.

Busy day yesterday. Changed tires for my car. Took trailer full of garden waste to city composting area. Bought 9 meter long ladder for our condominium. Then changed burnt bulb for rear light. And last i installed new front fog lights.

My car has poor low beam lights, so i hope these fog lights will give good amount of extra light. I will have to think if i should get set of extra high beam lights aswell. I usually have to drive road that has lots of traffic, so fog lights became necessity.

It seems like Umbilical Hernia is what your daughter had, and it sounds like it is hereditary. (genetic) It is the hernia near where the umbilical cord came out of her belly.

I have one too, so your daughter is in good company. ;)

Our American cast iron pot company, Lodge, is marketing enameled cast iron pots now, but that line are made in China, so I will never have one. With enameled, you retain the even heating and heat retention of cast iron, but lose all the retention of flavor that cast iron was always famous. Still, I hope it works out for you!

As for your car's headlights, are they poor, or just aimed poorly? If they're poor, can replacement of bulbs fix it? Or maybe a new reflector? If they're aimed properly, sometimes in the US, they have a "Tamper-resistant Torx" screw for adjusting the aim, so that we can't aim them too high. Pro-tip: you can change a Tamper-resistant Torx screw into a slotted screw with a Dremel tool and a cutoff disc. ;)

Best of luck, whatever happens. I'm glad your daughter is OK.

Sorry, I have not been very active here lately. I have been doing long hours at work. I am at work right now, doing 12 hour night shift. Nine hours to go still, and nothing to do. This sucks. Looks like i will get minimum of 21 hours of overtime for these two weeks.

What comes to my car lights. New fog lights work great. I think i will buy new bulbs for driving lights to see if they get any better. Glass on those lights are little worn, and do need some polishing. Aiming is ok, and has been aimed properly.

We have had some snow recently, and my wife needs a car, so we got new used car for my work travel. It has much better lights than our old car has. Little love will be needed for it, but it seems very good car with good tires for winter. It is a keeper for now.

I will need to make little toolbox for it. Just in case something happens on the road. And i need to pick some multitool for car carry, because of no knife policy at work.

It has been awhile since my last update here. Work has been little hectik, and hours  keep  piling up. Best hours with in two weeks was little over 140 hours. Now it looks staying around 100 hours per two weeks.

I havent had time to make anything, but have had  couple nice things. From Ronald Shröder i got Workchamp, that i have been wanting for some time now. Thank you for that. Then i found a New Soldier year stamped 14 at sales after christmas. Couple days later i found Sentinel from same place. I havent had time to play with them much yet. But hope soon i can.

I washed and oiled it. Works very nice now. I like it a lot. I am not sure what it is, but i think it is Camper. Only three layers, Blades, saw, and openers. Backside 5 turn cs with groove, and awl w/o hole.  No tools on scales.

Ok, Camper then :D

Pre-1973 as it has clip point small blade though, so nice catch nonetheless  :tu:

I was at work whole night last night. I did 12 hours shift. Got home about seven this morning. I didnt want to sleep too long because i have to change to morning shift tomorrow. After three hours of sleep i went for breakfast at Subway restaurant, and then went to flea markets. Found few interesting tools.

Shift changes don't suit me at all. It takes days to get over it. I have this week normal morning shift, next week evening till midnight, next morning week, but then it is twelve hour night shift for seven days straight. That is just killer shift. And just one day i have to change my rythm back to mornings. Oh sweet sleeping pills...

Glad you guys like what i found. They need lot of work, but winter is coming, i have good time to work on them.

Been awhile from last update. Here is something I got for my car. It has been snowing quite much lately, and I have to drive narrow road to work every day. Trees are full of snow, and bend over the road.

Billnäs axe, and a saw for my car. If I have to do some harvesting during my way to work.

Bench wice is for my garage. Needs little work.

I have been actively reading posts here at Mto, but not much participating.

Vice is in good condition, but needs some lubricating. It is made in England, so good quality piece. Jaws are 90mm which is a bit odd to me

Poncho, I will try to drive safely on these slippery roads. I hope I will not need those tools.

You have a good eye. It was repaired about ten months ago. They changed bottom sheet metal that corroded off. And couple other cracks.

Hi guys.

I may be silent for awhile, but i read posts here quite often.

Zipties did cross my mind. Today we might try some hot metal glue to it.

I did try to dump that load, but could not. So i had to wash it off. Bad thing was that some of it was frozen stuck to the bottom.
