Title: The great fishing thread
Post by: Grathr on April 02, 2014, 09:52:14 PM
As far I have noticed, there seems to be no dedicated fishing thread, so I thought I might start one. ( if there is one that I have missed, feel free to ignore this thread. ( preferably not like the ignore thread :) )
Please feel free to post your fishing stories and pics here.

I'll start:

I went on my first fishing trip of 2014 today.  Im fortunate enough to live about 1km from a trout river, and the trout season started yesterday, so I desided to try my luck. I caught no fish, but got plenty of fresh air and a nice dose of peace and quiet  :)

YESSSS! Might have just made my new favorite thread. The river is too swollen right now to even bother trying, but hopefully very soon I can add to this.

There is this one from long ago, but a new one wouldn't hurt. The last post was in 2009. I did a lot of fishing last year, but I have a lot going on in the next month or so, so sadly I won't be doing much if any fishing. I will follow your thread closely though. I might try and get out this weekend though. Weather permitting.

Dug up some photos from last year.

Here is a Bass just big enough to be legal. It was tasty filleted and deep fried.

Not mine, but my fishing buddy was checking his bait and this tiny bass was on his hook. We laughed all day about that one.  :D Love this picture.

What kind of bait where you using and what kind of Trout do you have there?

Nice pics!
I mainly use spinners or float with worm/ fly.

I have no idea what kind of trout that lives in my river. I guess some kind of river trout. I tried checking online, but that only made me more confused, as the experts dont seem to agree about how to classify the subspieces and genetic deviants...

Oh choice I presumed there'd be a few anglers on here.

My dad has a pretty much brand new boat and I'm always taking off with :P

My 10lb snapper.

My first kingfish caught on ultra light gear.

A couple of trevally. The big one was caught by my girlfriend. It was the first fish she caught on her new rod I bought her. It's over two feet long and my girlfriend.

Digging throug my dropbox I found a pic of a trout I catched in the mountains last summer. We stayed there for 2 days on our way to my family in the western part of Norway. I went fishing both evenings and came home with a trout like this one both times. Perfect for evening supper for me and the wife. :)

That's a lovely bit of scenery there. I love trout fishing. Haven't done it in years though.
One of my favourite memories as a kid is spending a weekend camping with a friend and we just caught trout constantly and cooked them over the fire. Yum.

Its probably a rainbow.

if the native usa rainbows are as varied as our native Irish brown trout you will witness some beauties in your streams
Our trout go from dark black with few black spots to silver with many black and red spots

Some fish I caught recently.
The Kahawai was smoked, the smaller Snappers went into a Ceviche and the larger Snapper onto the bbq.
Sadly no pics of the Eels, Stingrays or Trevally.

A few to begin with. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/02/03/5d92cd5e29ccf14c813a5534f3e385e5.jpg) Not a large one but the first one caught on my Stradic. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/02/03/ef4491044aa3cf57c4d867f75e7a0a67.jpg) Grouper. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/02/03/dc3cb7d59581302813c4be6aadb84fc9.jpg) Cobia, also called ling. The fishing here for cobia consists of hundreds of every sized boat with towers, ladders, or any elevation. You sight fish for them cruising at about 10 knots.

Moar. First up is a limit of Spanish mackerel. Funny thing is, the boat broke down as we were heading out the pass into the Gulf of Mexico. Luckily high tide pushed us back into the bay, where as I diagnosed the issue my best friend was goofing around with a "gotcha" (essentially a spoon lure) and caught one. We couldn't get the boat fixed so we hungout all day and caught these.

Next is a limit of Red Snapper. Back in the day the limit was 5 per person with a minimum length of 16". Now they are limit of 2 per person arena limit of 18" and the season is about 4 weeks. Roughly half what it used to be. Red snapper is the #1 Commercially fished resource around here, they are absolutely incredibly tasty. And they are super fun to catch. The state record is 46 lbs and our biggest so far is 38.

Lastly is a picture of a Freshwater Largemouth Bass. With a Spro Frog partially enhaled. Spro frogs/top water is by far my absolute favorite type of fishing. I love the lure almost as much as I love LM. The only difference is I have 50+ Spro Frogs. And like 6 LM's......

Oh and I have a treat for yall.

Back in 6th (7th?) Grade I caught this bull shark in 30 ft of water.

After fighting it with a Penn 9/0 Senator we realized we couldn't land this thing on the boat. We GOT OUT in 4 feet of water. And walked 40 yards to the beach where we finished dragging it in. Then drug it BACK to the boat with rope. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/02/13/8c0214aa3cc5f70a31454f17bcd67a15.jpg)

Love to fish ! I mostly fish for largemouth bass but like to fish for Muskies as well though not as often. I fish catch and release for the most part and I live in the land of 10,000 lakes so there are no shortage of places to fish  :tu:

Here is the biggest musky I've caught from a few years ago.

Just shy of 48 inches

That's a heck of a big fish!

I have never pulled anything that large in before.  I think my record is less than half that.

Seems like a lot of Red in those fins! I'd love to fish up north for a few months.

Is the whole "80 hours per musky" thing true?

I did a bit of fishing Saturday when we were camping with some mates. Caught a couple of salmon and a couple of mullet, the weather wasn't the best though, 38 degrees Celsius with strong hot winds and the surf was getting way too rough for us.

No, not really, it really depends on the lake and time of year.

Me and my bro went for a fish off our local jetty yesterday. We caught a few flat head and a bunch of decent size herring. :D It's funny because there was a couple of groups of others fishing longer than us and they caught nothing. Sucks to be them.

Caught this guy last week but after I removed the hook he bailed.

Managed to hold onto him long enough for the kid to get a pic tonight.

4lbs 4oz.

Typical Florida Strain Largemouth (black) bass. Taken out of a golf course lake with absolutely no vegitation or food supply.

That bass should easily weigh 8 if it had food. I fit my open skeletool completely in its mouth to get the hook.

You guy's grow them a bit bigger down there, that would be considered a pretty impressive Largemouth up north.

Yeah we grow a different "strain" down here

Our bass don't really shut down for winter. So their metabolism stays high and they eat year round which produces some massive fish. They may not live as long but they do get much larger.

Even bigger than bass in florida is bass in California.

There is a multimillion dollar industry based on taking Florida Strain Bass out of florida and stocking them in Southern California.

Not only does southern California practically have the same habitat but they have year round trout for The bass to eat.

I can EASILY say that I believe the next world record will be taken out of southern California.

This bass is names "Dottie" (for the black dot below her gill plates)

She was caught and on the cover of bassmaster magazine multiple times. And was a florida strain bass in southern California.

In this picture she was 26 pounds. a new world record. But she was snagged in the face with a jig when the angler set the hook he thought she had eaten his jig.

She is now dead. she was found floating the next year. Just natural age.

Yeah I really was surprised. Even our #1 spot doesn't have such fat bass.

In all honesty we drive past these lakes weekly, and never thought anything of them, I knew they were stocked with brim and catfish but I didn't know the bass would grow so large.

It's literally 30 yards from the "commons" (the local tourist hot spot) it's like an outdoor mall plus movie theater and BassPro. Yet the lakes obviously aren't that pressured.

The cobia are finally starting to be caught!!

Imagine a giant catfish that strolls along the beach roughly a foot below the surface. It's considered the ULTIMATE sight fishing. They arrive once the water hits 74ish-F. And stay for summer then keep traveling west down the coast of mexico. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/03/22/6010a27f1755c3746acf2446c8587b61.jpg) This is one of the 3 caught so far. 76lbs

Ok so stupid question NK   What are you doing with all these fish?  You have a big family, I dont imagine freezing them is a good idea.  Fish fry saturdays?

Speaking for myself, I don't know what NKs plan is. But I'm always catch and release.

It's almost fishing season here!
And there's still snow on the ground. And the freshwater is still frozen.

I did 2x 4000km round trips to try and catch Yellows on fly on the Vaal.....nada, zip.

Did my first stint in the little town of Rosh Pinah 2009, walked into the Orange at the Excavator rapid (37 VERY scenic Km's from my front door) with a fly rod and nothing but theoretical knowledge, walked out 40+ fish in less than 2 hours later smiling like a fool and completely bomb-shocked.

On the Orange fly fishing is a winter game, if all goes well I'll be there 16-24 May, water levels are low like they last were in 2009, and apparently they're already nailing the fish.....can't wait!

Cheers
Gerhard

Thats crazy man!
In summer you are certain to catch a whole lot of fish on the Vaal river, even if you have no clue how to do it.
Unless you are targeting largies, small-mouth are everywhere. (Jan-March)

Spent easter pap-gooing with the family, not my favourite fishing style but I caught more than I could count. (Vaal Dam, Carp, Yellows and Muddies)
In 2-3 weeks I'm off to St Lucia and Cape Vidal with the 9wt fly rod, some wavies and kingies are in for a little fight I'm sure.

I would love to do the Orange sometime, I hear its spectacular, what the Vaal would have been like 30-40 years ago.

On a plus side.

76lbs

Remember this guy? (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,51460.msg1052983.html#msg1052983)

I saw him feeding again last week.
Thought he would make a good pic for another merit badge so went looking for him after work today.
However someone with no heart got there before me, I counted nine left on the bank including a big old grandpa trophy fish.
I took pics and compared them to find I had caught three of those before and two of them more than once.
Needless to say I am pretty gutted right now.

Kinda a long story...

Buutttt...

I bought a Shimano Stradic CI4+ last summer. For 270 USD I want to use it.

The problem is, I bought a 4000 size which is honestly too big for freshwater

So I had a ST. Croix inshore that I LOVE the action of. It's super flexible and 7'

But the "line slap" (when line comes off the spool; everytime it comes near the rod it hits it and stick too it, which causes the cast to fail miserably) was so bad that I couldn't fish.

So I bought an 8' Falcon Rod for it. The handle is longer, I really like the 8' casting, and the only problem is its 1 peice. So fitting it in the truck is a little tough....

Carrot Sticks are a recent rod company.

They are made out of glass and fiberglass. They have incredible action, but they are prone to break. Yet the company still has a lifetime warranty

And yes I did :D i left a feedback but I can't tag you in it!

You only say that because I didn't have a gopro to record the rest of the day.

You would think a fish as such above would mean we would stay and keep fishing? No. We thought our luck was up so we headed south and hit the Pass. (Channel between the bay and gulf, 1/2 mile of boulders on each side)

Expecting to walk on boulders that are sharp, huge, and randomly laid is a challenge. Throw in 25 mph winds, a bucket of shrimp and 4 rods. And you have me and my fishing bud waving at the police helicopter as they order us to get back to the beach.

We hit 2 more spots without a whole lot of luck, we also fished every direction of wind we possibly could have lol

I did go the other day between classes. Local golf course is 2 minutes away from the school, this is my fishing partner. He specializes in fly fishing but loves a good spinning setup too, caught the biggest of the day.

So we went back to the same lake and night fished for awhile. An hour later with 2 misses on a top water frog I take a chance and tie on my Koppers Livetarget Bluegill. (I paid 19 USD for 1 lure)

And boom. Firsts 2 casts, first 3
2 fish. (http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/09/709089654d111b8f23042e1c76ce8de3.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/09/24c604c364f340c7a43b81f00530103f.jpg)

Thanks bud. We hired 2 more people that take care of cleaning now so my schedule is a little better.

Plus if we have a delivery for example at 4 ocklock and it picks up a few hours later, it's much easier and cheaper to just wait the few hours and fish! Works out pretty well IMO

I like the sound of that!

I've been extremely lucky to fish as much as I can. I kinda "fell out" of the hobby from November of 14' to Februaryish of this year.

Unfortunely when fishing time increases, paychecks decrease.

Nice catch :tu: are they any good to eat?
Largemouth bass are. Most people don't eat them, and the lakes I catch most of them out of are drainage or "golf course" ponds. Full of chemicals or runoff, I wouldn't eat them if someone paid me.

Plus, I love in "the luckiest fishing village in the world" (actual destin logo)

So catching edible fish wouldn't be that hard, I just get tired of cleaning fish!!

Missed your reply lol

Storm wasn't too bad, Destin Florida (US) is between a Bay and the Gulf ok Mexico. The Cool wind off the Gulf mixed with the Hot wind from the bay create a bubble that pushes storms around or away.

Almost every storm is 20 minutes - flat calm - 20 minutes - flat calm again, etc...

So much like.

Awesome setup, we run  Penn reels for all our salsmurfer setups, I think se are up to 22 of them.

And I run Suffix 832 on all my Freshwater stuff!

I've been told there's even better stuff on the market now, but Suffix 832 changed the way I fish for the better....
The rod-length casting leaders were/are a mess at best....

6kg braid is actually nasty-thin stuff, the fact I could cast a 3oz weight with bait in cold, wet conditions without cutting up my finger is amazing.

Went for a little hour fishing trip after the drive back from Atlanta this morning!

New setup (Shimano Curado 200HG on a Falcon Inshore 8' with Suffix 832 and a Spro frog in Killer Gill on at the moment) is awesome!!

Also got to use my recent backpack from SAKnight! Fits great! Really like the padding.

Unfortunely the lake was a bust, 2 tiny bass but I was kinda expecting it. (http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/07/649c1049f38166a57d80eac9c9496280.jpg)

Trust me to get the ugliest fish in the lake.   :ahhh

Nasty cancer on his face, which was terrible because it was a good sized, healthy looking fish otherwise.

Total accident too.  It was my first cast, and kind of half assed and next thing I know there's a fish on the line!

The Vaal is a different beast, I had 2 outings there several years ago with no luck, but I'm sure it presents many more opportunities than the Orange.
As soon as things heat up the fishing is over, and the floods leave so much sediment in the rapids the bugs are affected......meaning the fish simply feed somewhere else.
I did at least one trip per Winter since 2009 even when I wasn't living close by,  and 3 trips were a complete bust including this year.

IF my luck holds I can go Carp hunting with my 3WT coming weekend, haven't done that in way too long and really looking forward to it.

I expected SOG multis to have better stainless properties. Good to know.

Most of it came off with a quick scrub and I'm guessing the Phillips and File will as well once I've found something suitable to clean them with.

The fishing and eating was pretty good. With three families to feed we were out there most nights. Certainly helped keep the food costs down.

Do any of you have these immense personal fishing challenges that are so hard yet you still try and try again?

For me this is bushveld smallscale yellowfish. I have never caught one on purpose.
They are endemic to a specific region in the east of the country and I get to go there for a few days of camping this weekend.
I'll have other distractions with mountain bikes as well as kids but lets see if I can get some river time in with the fly rod and hook one.
Very different to the usual smallmouth yellowfish on the Vaal River that I usually catch.

Sounds like Muskie fishing. They call it the fish of 10,000 casts, and casting a 1 pound lure that many times for one fish tends to get tiring. I like to do it occasionally because of the thrill and novelty of catching one, but I usually stick to panfish. Little challenge catching large numbers of those!

I don't have any real challenging species. I've caught almost everything in the area, been here my whole life.

I guess I could say I've always wanted to catch a grouper on a live octopus. But that's more of a personal goal.

The engine wouldn't start yesterday once we had the boat launched. We paddled out to a few islands close by. I caught a catfish and a Sauger. Kept the Sauger and it was cooked up for lunch.

Fished the Blind River last weekend at Grant's parents.
Caught a little smallie who put up one heck of a fight.

Ocean and intercostal from surf, shore, and kayak. Reds, Drum, Pompano, Whiting, Trout, Shark, and the annoyingly ever present cats.

Freshwater- LM Bass mostly, but brim and carp are ok too.

I've been so busy with work and school that I've had little time to get out. I was content to do a total tackle bag clean out and organization yesterday. I fished the intercostal last weekend, got a bunch of cats and 2 rat reds, nothing big. Nothing was hitting a jr spook so I reverted to live shrimp.

I got a chance to get out and do some fishing today with the girlfriend. Not much but we got a big one each, bass is what's most common around here. Seems like they are getting bigger every year. Made use of the SOG Pocket PowerPlier to get the hook s out.

The pic is of the one my girlfriend caught.

Only a month and a half late lol

Actually it tried to eat live bait from a circle hook on a Cajun thunder.

The hook perfectly pierced the center of her top jaw, we had to cut it in half to get it out.

Thanks for the reply. No worries on the time delay, I haven't been able to do much fishing this year. :(

I typically don't run live bait in the area where I've seen the gar. Might have to get some minnows and give it a spin.

They are salsmurfer/inshore. They hangout on flats but really gang up on structure during the winter.

I'm sure you've seen pictures of their teeth before, somewhat similar to humans plus a ton of extra molars (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171222/b25effcd03e917f600e4c50d12563601.jpg)

Yeahp! A variety of oysters, barnacles, crabs, and shrimp. However people have caught them on artificals and live bait fish as well.

We were actually using mud crabs (much like a fiddler crab) as bait. With #8 bluegill hooks.

Sheepshead have incredible eyesight and are very finicky about eating a hook.

I’ve recently taken up fishing after about a twenty year break. I’m now getting into light tackle and small jig lures. Caught this young Jack pike this morning

Behemoth !  Reds, Spanish Mackerels, and some heavy ass rock fish that fought extra hard.  This was fishing with the boss off the coast of Louisiana .

Nice catches there, NKlamerus.  :hatsoff:

I love a good spinning reel. Been looking to get a good all oll'rounder fresh water spinning reel setup for bass, crappie and catfishing.

Just got my Texas fishing license in today.  :D Good for fresh and salt water. Been looking for a good spinning reel. I have a 1999 Shimano Calcutta 250 baitcaster but I like having a spinning reel setup in case (when) I get a bird's nest.

I've been using a Shimano spinning reel , the most basic model for years , now it's been feeling rough these days. Caught many fish on it.
