Pffffft! Who would spend hundreds of dollars to mod multi tools?!?! What a ridiculous theory! :D
So much for the topic...
I still don't have one of these...yet.
I suddenly wonder... Did Leatherman also get rid of the wobble in the removable pocketclip on the Surge?

Same reason why its handy to have both type of pliers in your toolbox. Needle nose for detailed work and stubby type for heavy work in confined spaces.
Surge is a hevy duty tool so some people give up the "detail work" part to have more grip in confined spaces.
Basically for all those bolts close to the wall.
Mine came in today. Will be carrying it at work tomorrow.

One more thing from me, highly recommended and works like a charm. Can be done with surges own file:Very nice!

I still don't understand how people can carry Surges.

I have a Surge with full extras that used to be a user, until I got my Swisstool Spirit and realized how a highest standard quality multitool feels like. So I'm not thrilled by the new Surge, unless it is more robust and has less play and rattle.Per your suggest, I went to store to handle Swisstool and did some research.
So, those that have used both, is the new one better and with lower manufacture tolerances?

For those still crying about no Eyeglass Screwdriver on New Surge.
For those still crying about no Eyeglass Screwdriver on New Surge. So simple in just putting the eyeglass driver bit in the slot where the belt/lanyard clip goes in with the spring lock holding it in place. No need for any drilling or anything and just removing it and putting it back in the bit card when done. I just tried it with my Wave and it works just as well.

By "drill a hole in any tool" I meant that you can do this even on mt without the pocket clip slot. Like rebar or wingman.Depending on how much torque you would need to tighten an eyeglass screw, the tension on the Rebar locking tab should be strong enough to hold the bit and tighten/loosen a tiny screw. Just tried it with my Rebar and it held enough to loosen and then tighten a screw on a pair of sunglasses. :D

Yes, before the new surge came out some people have been swapping pliers with ST300. Search for "Surge 300".Thanks :salute:
Now available in UK:

Still it was cheaper for me to get it from REI + 40 dollars shipping + customs charges (total about 110 pounds - that's almost 200 dollars folks...).
I like that photo Dale. :tu:
CuteI always whated to put the tigershark on the jaws like they used to paint on the noses of old WW2 planes.
The BO makes it look mean doesn't?
live from Nate's mobile
even though I don't EDC Surge on me anymore, I still EDC it in my computer bag, that is not going to change anytime soon.
I post a photo later.
@ Kam, now that is a terrific set up :2tu:Thanks man.
Just got a NEW SURGE delivered! It's my first BO Leatherman and my first Surge.
I guess the included leather sheath can't carry more than one bit card. I'd love to keep the saw/file in the sheath too.
I wasn't too happy with the leather sheaths capability myself and ordered the nylon one JIC. I have been using it and it's works pretty good but it's still pretty stuffed.
I really like the look/function of the New Surge, but even aside from it's large size, I'm a bit concerned about this lose pocket clip issue. I like and use a pocket clip and would want that fixed before I bought one...Sadly LM don't "see" that is a problem, so they are not going to fix it any time soon.
Accessories are just something you need to carry with some tools. I carry bits for my Rebar/Wave everywhere I go and that doesn't bother me. Just add those add-ons to your Skinth :tu:I really like the look/function of the New Surge, but even aside from it's large size, I'm a bit concerned about this lose pocket clip issue. I glued it secure and it is ok, but not great.
To me, the biggest advantage of the mighty Surge also is its biggest drawback = accessories
Add me to this list. Got my BO Surge a few days ago. I probably would have been satisfied with my Wave as my Work EDC but I wanted useful cutters and the larger size (better leverage) and scissors on the outside was icing on the cake. I use the scissors a whole lot when doing water and chemical testing (have to open these tiny reagent packages by the hundreds) so the Surge is a very welcome addition.
It's official! Im apart of the club! Very gracious Memorial Day present from my father. Anyone know why my surge didn't come with a pocket clip?Yes! Another member! Enjoy it and work it hard.

Does anyone know if Leatherman is making replacement saw/file (the ones with a hole in handle) for the new Surge?
I can't find it anywhere.
LM's web site states the old style saw/file is good for both version of Surge.
Do LM make surge w/ S30V blade like in Charge tti? They don't make S30V for Surge.
and how much better is S30v vs 420 steel?
A little review would be nice
Thanks :)

I'm sure I've read just about every surge customer review on leatherman's website to help convince myself.
I currently edc a wave and love it to bits but looking at the surge for work purposes. Can't decide. Ahhh.

Haha yeah I was wondering if anyone would say that. I only post if it's worth it.
I'm a sparky by trade and work in a manufacturing / industrial environment. Not looking at any other multitool. I'm a huge fan of the waves OHO and so naturally looking at the surge.

Yeah I have looked at the OHT and while it's neat I see it more as a speSmurfpillsed MT and I need something with a more array of tools.I love my Surge. I like because it has OH blades, uses bits, replaceable wire cutters, has an awl. Because of its size, the wire cutters will damn near cut anything. Feels very good in the hand, no matter how you are using it.
Honestly what's putting me off the surge is hearing that it's big and heavy, I really need to see it in the flesh before I can commit.
Anyone that carries a surge daily I'm curious and would love to hear why you chose it over other MT's.

Looking around for prices and geez they aren't exactly cheap over here in Australia.
The cheapest I have found for the new model is around 160 clams.

I got mine for 85 USD.

Same here, picked it from eBay last week, free shipping in US, delivered to NZ by my US shipping agent for $10...so not bad at all for $95 delivered half war around the World.
Well I pulled the trigger today.
Got one off eBay from an American seller for total $105 US. Pretty happy. Can't wait to get it.

Hello Guys,Hi!, Welcome to MTO!
I'm new on this forum but i would like to get a Leatherman for first time.
A college of mine uses an LM Surge, the old one, i'm considering the newer one, but I don't really know is the plier way bigger on the newer one or not.
I've seen pictures from both MT's, but i'm still bushed do I need the new Surge coz it's size, or the Wave\Charge would be better.
BTW We're Aircraft mechanic\electricans in our work if somebody has better advice please say it for me.
Thx a lot!

The new Surge is the same size as the old one. It sounds like you want a Surge or maybe even a bit smaller Wave for your job :D

Its a tough question and the default answer here is: BUY THEM ALL!
New Surge has replace-able wire-cutters, so if wire-cutting is on your to do list I would say +1 to the new one. If you think you can get away with a smaller tool, the Wave is one of the most popular MTs around.
On the other hand both Wave and Surge are practically useless (IMHO) without bit extender and bits. So if you don't want to carry any more extra stuff, I urge you to look at the SuperTool or the Rebar. And if it doesn't have to be LM, maybe a Victorinox SwissTool or the SwissTool Spirit.

@Etherealicer: I really liked the heavy\durable size of the Surge but I will take a look on them in my hand. But I'm not sure about that do I need this big tool or I'm okay with the Wave\Charge size.... ::)
The bit extender will be a standard and first of all thing what I will buy to my LM ;)

I had the same tough decision of which LM to get between the Surge and the Wave. It's wasn't easy so I went with the Wave and have never regretted it. That being said I did finally get a Old Surge and WOW, this tool is everything you can imagine and more. I ended up getting the New Surge and yet again WOW.
Ok so if I have made things more complicated then sorry but I do have a point here somewhere .
The plier heads on the Old vs New Surge;
The new head has the 154CM replaceable cutters. The cutters can get in the way when griping bolts but I haven't had much of an issue. There are also a few more serrations on the regular plier part vs the Old Surge. The needle nose part is shorter as a result and I may be wrong but the serrations appear finer vs Old Surge. The regular plier serration are also shallower, not a raised.
There are other differences but I tried to highlight what I feel makes a difference.
The Wave is a very competent tool and cannot IMO be compared to its larger brother. In its own class its IMO the best multitool LM offers.
It really comes down to how large of a tool are you looking for and are 154CM replaceable cutters that important to you. Keep in mind the Surge is a beast and is best worn of the belt.
I hope I didnt make your choice harder and if you want to play it safe GET BOTH.
I tried to put the tools by some items that I hope you are familiar with. The ST300 was thrown in just because.
My biggest problem is the LM prices are horrible in my country and it's hard to have a look on the selected one.
e.g. : surge 250 $ wave 200 $ charge 300$

Welcome to the club, brother...pretty much all non-US coutries have the same issue when it comes with overblown multi tool pricing, and that's not just for Leatherman MTs.
I own close to 20 multi tools purchased over the last 16 or so years, and only the very first one my wife bought me on our honeymoon in Italy was the SAK Swiss Champ purchased in brick and mortar shop. All others were bought online mainly thru Amazon and eBay, usually at 1/3 of the price I would pay in NZ and previously in Cro for a particular model.
So my only suggestion to you would be - when it comes to sourcing of MTs, stick to online sources, most of those will have "for USA sale only" designation on their boxes but who cares really, these aren't life-or-death instruments, they're cool gizmos and contraptions most of us could live without anyway ;)
Cheers!
Where's the cheapest place to buy from in the US? I'm assuming posting to a US address for my friend to pick up when over there will be the cheapest option....
My biggest problem with ebay\amazon if i buy them with the shipping cost and if i order something abroad from the EU with the taxes it will cost around a same amount of money maybe 20 $ less or something.
Thanks for the tip mate. :tu:Where's the cheapest place to buy from in the US? I'm assuming posting to a US address for my friend to pick up when over there will be the cheapest option....
I use YouShop service by NZ Post when the seller doesn't ship internationally. Intra-US shipping is usually free, then from US to NZ is about US$14 for something like multi tool or similar.
cheers.
The wait is over. My BO Surge arrived in the mail today.
WOW! What a beast. This is one awesome MT. I may do a review and give my own take on this but for now here is a few pictures. I've also done small mod if you will to allow a a hack saw blade to fit in the tool. Enjoy.

Should I get BO or SS? I think I prefer the look of SS, any other factors to consider?
Should I get BO or SS? I think I prefer the look of SS, any other factors to consider?Pretty much depends on what you like. I like BO myself. But the SS looks sharp too. One thing about BO, you can do this......
But BO costs more , also any mods would have to be in BO also.
Decisions decisions...
About $20NZD more. Is it worth it if I prefer the look of the stainless? No. But who knows, I may change my mind. But BO costs more , also any mods would have to be in BO also.

It does...few extra $$ if any. It's worth it, believe me.
Just out of interest, what would you like to mod on a Surge? Some of the smaller tools?
Is it worth it if I prefer the look of the stainless?
I don't have anything particular in mind, also I'm not very familiar with them, but a fixed phillips would be nice. It's a shame that to mod something in you usually need to take something out.
Count me in! I EDC my new Surge now for 2 month :tu:

So I'm not in yet either...
The Molle XL sheath made by leatherman may be an option as well - if you are willing to spend the money.
Nice Surge!
Haven't seen a sheath do that the first day! The only thing I can think of is get a scrap piece of leather and make a new loop. Or add a clip like on the back of a tape measure.
Just got my BO new surge but the main blade pivot is loose and then tightens up to the point where I i can't even open the blade...any suggestions?
It does bother me a little bit that the plier head is cast rather than forged and I don't like to be reminded of this fact with the presence of that annoying seam.
Cool mod! Do you still have the micro driver exchanger and bit and would you want to get rid of it?
Nah, don't worry about it. JBW1 might have what I need. Also that's a long way and expensive just for a micro driver and I am in no big hurry. Thanks for the offer man.Cool mod! Do you still have the micro driver exchanger and bit and would you want to get rid of it?

Welcome to MTO.
Here's a question that I need help with,I'm sure there's a thread for it,or it's been asked 1 million times What's the best sheath for my Surge? I need room for my bit kit and a flashlight,I would also like side holders for my flashlight, and a firestarter or bit extender,I have the Nylon Molle sheath that it came with and i can fit the bit kit in it with a flashlight clipped on,but it's crazy tight and I dont think it's gonna last a long time,so until I can get out of the financial pit we are in,it will have to do,Is the Maxpedition a good one for my need and if so what size or are there other's like on Ebay,or custom models that are good,I will be carrying this on my belt most days-thanks for the help http://www.amazon.com/Maxpedition-1802-Single-Sheath-Black/dp/B001CZFTJO/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1420431876&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=leatherman+surge+sheath+maxpedition#Ask
I just noticed how rough the finish is on my scissors.
Doesn't affect the tool in any way though.

The scissors on my Surge look very similar, so I guess the rough finish is quite normal, right ?
Been carrying my surge for about a month now. I was skeptical of utilizing the pocket clip on such a large lm, but it doesn't bother me one bit. Ive always carried my charge, wave, Gerber 600 and pocket knives in the same pocket, so maybe that's why its not something I had to get used to.
I loved the way ducttapetech customized his b.o. surge so I had to steal the mod :salute:
Now that Halloween past I found some acrylic green glowing paint that I really thought would have been awesome, but it was too watery. So had to go with the paint marker. Thanks for the idea Nate :D

Does anyone have a recommendation for glow paints to use for this purpose?
I have a Surge arriving TODAY!

This has crossed my mind. I have been thinking about doing the same thing.

How about some glow in the dark powder in some clear epoxy?

I thought of that, too. My concern was with what I would do if I did not like it. It seems getting some paint out would be easier than getting epoxy out.

And it is BO too, well done Crow.
Welcome to the club Crow .
My BO Surge came with the premium leather sheath, did yours come with the (small) black Molle sheath ? When I ordered my Surge, I ordered a black Leatherman Molle XL sheath along with it. I knew this was a great sheath since I already own a tan one that came with my MUT. I also got myself two other Molle sheaths (Tasmanian Tiger (http://intranet.tatonka.com/infosys/php/artintt9.php?7698_TT%20SGL%20Mag%20PouchMP7%2020+30round)), a khaki and an olive one since they only cost 10 Euro each, and they also held up quite nicely so far.
I just find it a bit strange that mine came with the premium leather sheath since I thought the BO tools always came with a Molle type sheath.
I'm not sure about all that exposed velcro on the Tasmanian Tiger sheaths.
I sent my old surge in for repairs and was happy to receive the new surge as a replacement. It works so much smoother then the older one and i appreciate the replaceable wire cutters

Hi All,Welcome to the forum Henk. We have seen this a few times (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,54027.0.html). The first link is dead but there are some more further down.
I had the original Surge that I purchased back in 2009. Last year I noticed a crack on the frame of the Surge and I sent it in for repair/replacement. Due to Leatherman's amazing 25 year warranty they exchanged it for a brand new 2013 model Surge with the replaceable wire cutters.
Unfortunately my new 2013 model Surge also cracked at the exact same spot. I haven't even used the Surge for any heavy duty tasks, as my every day carry tool is a Super Tool 300.
So I will be sending my 2013 model Surge in again to be replaced by Leatherman's amazing warranty.
I am just wondering if any of you guys out there has experienced the same problem?
Please see my included photo.
The black oxide coating on the blade exchanger is basically non existent. Other then using black permanent marker, as I have already tried but rubs off, is there any other way to return some black colour to it in a permanent way?

I'm not. Luckily I managed to sneak over the Lewis in the weekend without snow stopping me.
Finally got around to ordering another surge. I have an original ss version, this time I got the new bo one. I'll post up pics when I get it later this week.

Hey folks, just got a LM Surge about 3 weeks ago. Really like it so far. It's my first multitool. I bought it direct from Leatherman, got the black oxide with my name and phone number on it. I like the idea I've seen here about using a paint marker or glow in the dark paint for the letters on the name and the tape measure. Any advice on what glow in the dark paints to use?Wish I could help, but I have not used the glow in the dark paint.
See if you can find a fine tip paint marker from the craft section. Not as messy :)Thanks, another good tip.

I am getting interested in a Surge, but having to mess around with swapping the file and the saw seems like a real pain to me. The main benefit of a Surge versus an ST300 is the easier deploying tools. I do a lot of work where I just need to take out my tool and use the file or saw and put it back away. Do Surge owners just get used to swapping out tools a lot?
New BO Surge comes in the mail tomorrow!
Let me say before starting this review I have been a big fan of SOG multi tools since the late 1990s. I once tried a Leatherman in the early 1990s and it just did not hold up to the abuse I threw at it.

I did notice however the 'teeth' on the needle nose section appeared to be more aggressive then normal. Well, to me anyway. I'm actually quite curious as to why if this is the case.

Sure use the photos as you like. Can you take a photo of where the numbers are I can't find them?
So, all I can see on the inside of both handles is 051. What the hell is that? On my BO surge it's very easy to determine build date by month and year but not on my SS version. This makes no sense to me.

Sometimes the stamp can be very faint. Try with a flashlight using different angles. I'm thinking it's probably 051_.

Good work. :tu: So that Surge has the fine teeth?

Those hands could do with some moisturiser or something... :D
Good morning, I've a question about my surge, I want replace serrated blade with a new serrated blade with hook (txtoolscrafters) , anyone know if charge blade fit with surge? Looks like they have same shapePretty sure it wont
Thanks, but in my case is the opposite, I need to fit charge/wave blade into a surge frame, if locking system work, space it's not a problem I think, am I wrong? Its not the space I meant (OK, the image might have been confusing), there is not enough material on the blade around the pin, to engage the lock. I also think the Surge has larger diameter on the pin.
Congratulation. :tu:
You made the first step into a bigger universe. :D
And a bigger tool.
And a bigger tool.
You´re none of the little girls, i´m sure you can handle it.

About frickin time. Now you will wonder why it took you so long.
I got my New Surge about a year ago, along with the bit set as a birthday present from my lady. In that time it has been remarkably useful for both work and play.

Welcome to the boards mate. Sorry but you are not in the club until we see picture evidence. :pok: :)
First off, nice site. I have had, and carry nearly daily, an original Super Tool since 1997 and it has started to get loose in pivot for the pliers head so the wire cutter now over laps making it basically useless , so I sent it in to see what Leatherman will do to it under warranty. In the mean time my wife bought me a Surge for a Christmas president. To say I am impressed is an understatement. It fits my hands so much better and to have the ability to access the knife blades without opening the tool is great. I am looking forward to putting it through the paces at work and home.
Yeah, been owner of the older version of Surge. Today, after a kind and awesome warranty replacement, I am a proud owner of the Brand New Surge version 2 in the mail!

Guys check this out!
Posting to Australia it says on the offer but if you contact the author of the offer he will probably check if it can be posted to your location also. It is only $11.95 AUD
Here I have attached a few pictures.
Got mine DRHL (its called Detachable Removable Handle Lock for Leatherman Surge) yesterday! This is awesome! Locks the handles when you just need the outer tools only!
It makes the whole tool sturdy when you using the outward located tools and for e.g. I tried to hack couple of palm branches and it was much better in the hand, much much better!
Just tried to do light hammering with the bottom of the tool with the lock attached. Very cool.

Hi welcome to the forum, but please keep in mind its considered very bad form (and against forum rules) to post spam links, and links to ebay auctions that are pretty clearly your own.
Regarding the product, I cant see a market as Ive never had an issue with the handles on any of my leathermans flopping open. If you did, you might have just tightened the screws.
I love how this forum deals with spammers. Thanks for keeping this place safe and sane......well safe at least   :hatsoff:Guys check this out!

Don't Detachable and Removable mean the same thing? Is that why a bent hunk of steel costs $12? Got to pay extra for the redundancy?

Has anyone tried to modify the eyeglass screwdriver bit to make it fit the large bit holder?
The new Surge does not have the bit holder for the eyeglass bit so I am contemplating to cut off both ends of a bit that I never use, drill a hole through it and then glue or solder the eyeglass bit in that hole with the ends projecting to each side. Would this work or are the Leatherman bits too hard to drill through with a regular metal drill? Any other problems?
I really do not understand why Letherman made a special bit holder for the smallest bits. It must be possible to make a really small screwdriver for a regular size bit holder.
That small bit fits on surges handle. Part where lanyard loop goes, and under the lock. There is some pictures of it here somewhere. I do not remember whom tried it first.I think there are pics of this earlier in this thread.
Has anyone tried to modify the eyeglass screwdriver bit to make it fit the large bit holder? To answer your question, yes, someone has done this. I can't remember who did it or where it was posted but it's on the forum somewhere...

Basically, start a thread, carry the Surge for 7,15 or 30 days and post a pic every day.I was thinking about the challenge. Where is the info for it?Yes I do. It is one of my main Multis and all time favorites. I even did the Surge challenge with it.Nice looking Surge! Welcome to the club. Thanks man. Do you EDC yours?

I can't seem to find that one location where all the challenges/badges are listed on a android tablet. I have been edc a Surge for about a week with the bit kit, the extender and the file crammed into the nylon sheath. It is definitely heavier than the Charge TTI I had been carrying but not so much heavier that I really notice it. I think in my situation that my kydex reinforced Beltman belt helps out a lot and absorbs the weight. I really think having a good belt is key to carrying a lot of weight on your person
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yeah no problem. I'm not home yet, and like I said the belt is the cornerstone of my pants staying up with all the stuff I'm carryingYeah, we don't want you dropping your pants in the middle of work. That might be a little awkward.

Great picture with the modified bit. I wonder why Leatherman didn't do something like that to begin with instead of making a separate bit holder for the eye glass bit.

Hi guys!! I've just sold my trusty Wave, just to upgrade to a Surge. My new toy should be delivered within 3 days...can't wait!!

I'm a big guy, no problem for weight and overall dimension of the Surge. I chose it cause i was searching for "a bigger Wave", and i think the Surge is the best option available...
Inviato dal mio HUAWEI MT7-L09 utilizzando Tapatalk
The only problem will be the loose clip on the Surge (i used to carry the Wave clipped in my pocket, and i'd like to do the same with the Surge), but i'll try to fix it in some way...

I made a similar suggestion to Leatherman in my review of the bit kit. It could even be made out of the same plastic as the bit kit holder, as the amount of torque required on eyeglass screws shouldn't be too excessive.
Anyone want to 3D print something up?
Thanks! It seems like the tools scratch each other when i pull out...

Yep, mine has wear inside the handles but I hadn't really noticed it until I looked just now.
The wear on the side of the pliers is more noticeable.
And do you noticed when folding the tool that one pliers handle fits over the pliers head more snug then the other?
And is your pliers jaws completely even when closing the pliers and looking at them from the tip of the needle nose?
And do you noticed when folding the tool that one pliers handle fits over the pliers head more snug then the other?
No, looks fine to me.And is your pliers jaws completely even when closing the pliers and looking at them from the tip of the needle nose?
Yep, looks fine to me. :)
Here's mine,
By the way do you guys have any wear on he inside of the handles where the pliers go in when folding the tool? And have you noticed that one handle seems to slide over the pliers or the plier slides In a little easier than the other? It did loosen up a bit as I open and close it more but is it normal for one side of the plier handle has to wear into the plier?
Any way here it is
By the way, I have one more problem, when I am closing the pliers and when they are almost completly closed, the inner tools will loosen up. Does that happen to yours? When the pliers are opened and engaged, the inner tools are stiff and in good position and no problem but when I disengage the plier and when I am closing it, the inner tools will loosen up when the two handles are almost closed completely. Is it normal? I hope I described clearly.....

I recently purchased a suge and i*ve notiched that the washers (or covers) over the blades rotate slightly. Is this a flaw or am I overthinking things.
Thanks.

New Surge, what a great tool. I really like it.
Hello all of ther Leatherman Surge owner. I just got my leatherman Surge black today and it's my first leatherman tool after couple weeks of thinking which one suits me best. There are some problem that i got and hope that you guys can help me solve my problems. First thing first it's all black and I don't know how but my hand got some black coast after touched my Surge. I used some tissue to wipe it off and it's better now I just wondering is that my fault or is that the black oxide coast is really easy to come off and not durable like in some advertisements. 2nd thing is the pliers is really hard to close and when I watched some video it looks so easy and smooth mine is really hard and you have to use some muscles to do the job.Apart from that it's a amazing tool and I hope it can serve me for many years in the future. :drink: :drink:

Really not sure on the size  it is to attach the straps in the other pic to some steel cables that are attached to the crane hook for when we send brick, stone, mortar etc around to different spots on the building :tu: Anything smaller is harder to get all 4 loops of the belts on :salute:

Here is my faithful helper at work
Just joined the club tonight. Going to semi retire my bigger Kershaw tremor and replace with this smaller Buck pocket knife since the Surge has a decent sized locking blade. Looking forward to start carrying it tomorrow!
Does this New Surge's Blade Exchanger actually fit some of the metal cutting blades that Leatherman touted earlier on? Think LM said T-10 base would fit.The new Surge's exchanger has a spring that should reduce or eliminate the wobble that the old exchanger had. It does a reasonable if not perfect job at that with commercially available T shank blades..
Oh, and does the new cover (whatever locks the saw/file/other blade in there) stay put? The original one slides out too easily and I don't think ever stays put. So asking in the new blade exchanger fitting, does it stay intact & locked-in?

Edit: the spring also helps to keep the cover shut.

I've carried a Leatherman since the mid 90's and have never ever used the can opener.
Well I got my Surge a few weeks back but never carried it due to the defective can opener. I was going to return it for a replacement but I kept having issues receiving a return label from the seller and I honestly just got sick of the situation so I told him to issue me a partial refund and I would just send it to Leatherman to be fixed. I decided I’m just going to carry it as is for now. I never use the Leatherman can opener anyways so it’s not a real issue for me. I’m enjoying my new tool finally!Glad you are carrying the Surge, was wondering where in process you were.

~Do you mount the Molle sheath on you belt? Or pocket carry?
Sheaths don't make me any nevermind as I carry them all in a molle sheath
~
I like this style sheath for the Surge. This one is for a Wave but still has room for the file in the storage slot. I have the Bigger one that was for the Core/Surge and it has room for a bit card.I second that... what I think Steve means is identical to the one below that I use for my ST 300 VX but I don't have pics of it with the Surge in it. Fits like a glove with the bit card and extra file in the tool slot and has side webbing for small things.

The MTO way is of course to get both  If It that isn't feasible get whichever one you fancy the most :D :tu:Yes, that is an option. Then move handles between the two and have two 2-tone units. Then keep the color combo I like then sell the other!
I do have one like DT shows that Kev was so kind to gift to me. I also have the bigger version of the one I showed earlier that I was referring to, shown here on the left :tu:So they make a premium leather larger than the 4-1/2” model?

I thought the Premium Leather is like DT's one and is some sort of reconstituted "leather".... as opposed to Steve's "proper" leather....

Meanwhile the modded Surge is snugly fitted in its sheath, with a bit card, the sleeve for the extra file containing an additional Vic tweezers and toothpick set, and in the stretch side pockets a bit holder and an extender as well as a LED Mag Solitaire.Which bit extender is that?
I have noticed however that the stretch pockets quickly lose much of their elasticity and objects may start falling out if too loose...

Is it the one that goes on the Phipps or the bit exchanger? I can't tell by the pic. It almost looks like it has been modified. The one that goes on the Phillips Driver is called the Removable Bit Driver.

Does anyone else not like the scissors? :think:Any particular reason? I like them a lot, IMHO LM's most solid design...
On the Surge, my thumb does not reach the moving handle, if I hold the tool normally. I have to have it lower in my palm, to operate the scissors.Shame. It's perfect for my hands.

The Surge scissors are very functional for me. Have tested them Right and left handed, using thumb (top), or with index finger (bottom).
They are sharp and feel that they maybe the best scissors of any MT I have used.
PS: yes my paws are of the XL size, even sometimes XL gloves are small. Flexible material works best, or stretch wet leather for good fit;)

Modified SURGE!!!Nice mod DT! :like: :tu: :tu:
(Bit driver replaced with fixed Phillips driver)
Thanks :D
The inspiration actually came from the exact opposite location on the planet, more specifically from Syncop8r who had done this before together with zoidberg, so thanks to them too :tu:
In that case many thanks to these guys too :2tu: (evil510 and DaveK are you two still active on the forum? :waving:)Thanks :D

 :D
Still had version 1.0 Surge. There's no accidental breaking of these tools. Would like to send mine in to get the blade exchanger replaced, even if I had to pay for it, as the cover on the old version keeps sliding off. Doubt that Leatherman would do that. Still on the fence about the pliers as needle nose is good to have over the Rebar type. You could get a newer blade exchanger off Loki. :pok:

Only Tools Matters
My Surge got called into action this morning when my Dog's outside pen blew over. I hammered in some star pickets and then used wire to tie the bottom rail to them. I wish the needle nose portion had more aggressive teeth, trying to twist up the wire in the rain they just slipped a lot  :twak:

My 2017 Surge has very coarse(aggressive) teeth on the needle nose. I'm not 100℅ sure, but am fairly certain. :)

Since I recieved my Surge (around 6 months ago), it has been clipped to my pocket every single day. It’s my go to tool and I am never without it. The Surge has really impressed and I believe I have found the tool that will see years and years of carry and use. I used to be all about trying every tool and always carrying something different. I must admit, I have tried just about everything Leatherman has made and the Surge is the winner in my book. :tu:
Ahh ok. Got it. Don’t I feel stupid now.
Some say it' unbearably heavy but I say it all depends on what else are youc carrying :D

Dude, I think you need a demotion from Captain for that
Well this is quite embarrassing but I’ll swallow my pride and ask. I am a saw guy over a file guy but I want to give the file a fair chance to prove itself in my Surge. I tried exchanging the saw for the file but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to change them. The blade exchanger has bested me. I cannot find any text online to explains it either. Can one of you fine ladies or gents please give me a step by step.
That's clever Matt. I want to make one of OHO the scissors.
I need to upgrade to an 'old' S5 then!

Hi Cap, I've made a GIF for you just in case.
Sorry only had one hand free

That's a cool GIF. I think the nail nicks on the file/saw end and on the scissors are not required. LM could square off the file and make it a bit bigger and you'd still get it out just fine.
I store my file round the other way and I just use my thumb on the blade exchanger to deploy it. The scissors could be buttery smooth if LM polished the contact point with the spring, or you can fold it back and sand it yourself

You're right.
I'm a bit more cautious with the scissors though.
I don't want to push on the spring too much.
And I don't want the freely swiveling part to spring-crash open

I have the two-tone Surge in my shelf-queen collection and it is just plain sexy.
The Surge is one of those tools that we complain about the weight on, but still carry, because it is sooo good. I carry my stainless Surge with the file, wood saw, metal jigsaw blade, and 21pc(42 driver possibilities) bit set. Worth every ounce. :2tu:
You're quite welcome, kalison!
Honestly, I don't care to put everything in one sheath. I use the premium leather 2-pocket sheath for the Surge and keep the blades/bit cards in a PST sheath directly next to it. Stays closer to the belt and isn't too thick. :)
Some use Leatherman's Molle XL sheath, others are always banging on about Skinths.
I use a double mag pouch; one pouch for the Surge, the other for the bit kits, saw blades, RBD etc.
Welcome aboard kalison !

I have never owned SOG, but always wondered how they would be. But from Youtube and other reviews on SOG, I got impression that they might have some quality control issues, and also some tools in MT are not well made = files, screw drivers etc?
But interesting to see you have pinpointed on these points with SOG. :iagree:
I am happy with my Surges and SWISSTOOLS and Gerber MP400 and 600 and Diesel. :tu:

Sure the older version Surge is still collected and used by members. Are you enjoying yours?
Welcome to :MTO: Orpheus  nothing wrong with the original Surge :salute: They did tweak a few things with the new version but many people love the original and it can withstand quite a bit of use :tu: I would say use it and don't worry if it's not the new version  and if it happens to break in use then send it in to LM and they will fix or replace it
To me, it does not make sense to have the small driver on the large tool...I agree with the Cutter of Loops above, perhaps more because it must be quite unwieldy using a large heavy tool to do precision work.

I doubt I would use a clip but does it add any benefit on the new surge?I had my doubts but after I tried that's my preferred EDC. When I know I'm going to need the whole kit I use the sheath with extra saw blades. phillip heads and stuff. But usually just the surge with the pocket clip.
What finish are you thinking of getting sawman :tu:It is between two tone or stainless.
That’s what I was thinking as well when I wanted to buy the SurgeI'm looking forward to those scissors to be perfectly honest - it's become a requirement of mine whether the day's carry is a modified Pro Scout, SURGE or otherwise :D
And luckily the two tone Surge was on Sale
and cheaper then the stainless Surge so it made my decision very easy :tu:

I just bought my first New Style Surge. I wanted a BO one bad, but I just can’t get past the fact that the coating on the pliers has worn off on my Waves and Charges by simply opening them to slightly break them in. I like the worn in look, but that isn’t worn in. It’s just eaten away. Looks like garbage before you even put the tool to use. Rant over.
I think there are pics of this earlier in this thread.

To answer your question, yes, someone has done this. I can't remember who did it or where it was posted but it's on the forum somewhere...

Nice use for the bit holder :o will try this and use this :tu: :like:
I always have one of the bit kits in my sheath that has the removable bit adapter (keeps me versatile with a bit driver and the square Phillips  ) but I don't always have the small eyeglass driver on a MT, this will add to the versatility for when I don't have one :tu:
Here is the one I carry in my sheath daily for several years now :tu: eyeglass bit included
