Sept 20 & 21 - Smashie TD Nikos Tofty Cupboard

The September date is preferable for me as we should have finished combining and shouldn't have started foraging. That said, last harvest we were doing both for a couple of weeks!
Should be a bit cooler too.

Looks like I'm still free for the 8-10th weekend.

What's a sensible time to turn up on the Friday?
Are we bringing equipment, for the same daytime activities as last year?

(someone remind me to bring the box of whiskies)

With a bit of child care shuffling it looks like I'm going to be able to make it! :woohoo:  Likely be down late Friday afternoon at a guess, but more likely into Friday evening.

I'll bring the usual mix of axes, knives tools etc plus the air rifle gear if folks are interested again.

Cupboard - coat & chair & cheese & that big lantern doofer & dont turn up when it's pitch black and absolutely pissing down with a quagmire beneath our shoeless feet and expect us to put a tent up you've never used before and wood

 :-[

I'll make sure to bring some more fuel for the lantern and see if I can't rig up a lantern-stick.

Food wise, I could bring along plenty of onions, bacon, potatoes and cheese for sharing.
I've got loads of onions and cheese and I'm short of the others so I'll use any leftovers.

If anyone's got any electrics they want to use I could probably borrow a spare tractor battery but there's no point it me humping it around if there's no demand.

OK mate, I've just got some new cartridges for them, so I'll see if I can figure out a way to transport them safely.  :tu:

As an aside, I phoned Mark today, and he won't be joining us as he's booked up with something else. He has however asked if we want to borrow the big tent he had last year. It was a godsend for us last time with the heavy rains, and though not completely waterproof is did keep the worst off us. Do we know what we're likely to expect this year? Has Sparky Bloke done it to us again?  :P :D :D Has anyone else got any "group shelter" options?

UK Outlook for Thursday 7 Aug 2014 to Saturday 16 Aug 2014:
A band of rain and showers will move eastwards during Thursday, with drier and brighter conditions following. A mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers are then likely Friday and Saturday  but with the chance of more persistent rain across eastern England for a time. It then remains unsettled into next week, especially in the north and west. A gradual trend to more settled conditions, especially across the south, is then signalled by the end of the period, with more in the way of drier and brighter weather. However it is likely to stay unsettled across the northwest. Temperatures generally near normal, but often warm and perhaps very warm towards the south and east. Winds generally light to moderate, but locally strong in the west at times.

Hard to say really so bring sun cream and wellies  ::)

I think TD said he might bring a gazebo

Both?

I'd say bring the big tent Al.  Did we just have the flysheet up last time, or was Mark sleeping in it as well?  Anyway, if no-one else is bringing anything similar then I''d say it might be worth it.

No probs. I've had orders from his Mrs to go round and see them for a cuppa anyway  :D so I'll pop round on Thursday and grab it  :tu: Last time we had the fly up and Mark had one of the rooms up as well, but if we only have the fly up there'll be even more room inside

Title: Re: UK Meet 2014 Dates

My garden lighting is those Hotspot gas lights that take the propane torch cartridges. I've just got some new carts for them which should give 8-14 hours light - so long as I can transport them safely enough. There's 4 of those.

I also have one of those bird feeder pole thingies that's a take-apart pole with a number of "shepherds hooks" on the top, which might be OK for one/both of those petrol lanterns. If either Tom or Michael want to "commandeer" that at the end of the meet, you're quite welcome, as I don't use it.

Good to hear you have a tent John  :tu: I'll prob still chuck a spare in the car anyway, incase anyone gets in difficulties  :salute:

As pretty much everyone but Smashie has seen the bulk of my gear anyway, I'm not going to be bringing everything down again in the vain attempt to save some petrol money ::) As such, shout up if there's anything you specifically want me to bring, or it might not be coming  ;)

Mrs TD is having a clear out in the kitchen and will be throwing away some old saucepans. I shall try and stick them in the car to bring as a 'one use and throw' deal.
Water containers might be handy folks ! even just a couple of old plastic bottles, ie. 2ltr or 3ltr cola bottles or washed out milk bottles. if everyone brings some we'll have plenty. it saves hiking to and fro the tap ;)
bring a bag of BBQ charcoal if you can (like you can pick up in the super market for a few quid)

I'll have my phone but that's probably it. I'm planning on bringing my car charger and a spare small SLA battery to charge it from. Not high tech or elegant but I have them lying around.

If anyone needs collecting from any form of public transport I'm very happy to oblige.

Don't...

A couple of years back, three of us are coming back from a HFT at Lee Valley,so little car, three guys, four guns. We get cut up on the turn off on to the M25( for our American friends, this is 'the road to hell' from the Chris area song),and got forced on the road down towards Edgeware(kinda like a third world town).

We're stuck in traffic outside a pub were opposing football fans are starting to kick off,and the paddy wagons are arriving in force....

I'm no where near ready.

I haven't got any clean clothes to pack, so my machine is going on tomorrow morning.
I haven't found things I need to find.
I haven't got any food.
I haven't gone to get the chair I'm borrowing.
I haven't got round to acquiring wood. In fact, I might pop back to work and to a bit of smashing now.

Etc etc.

Well, I've got plenty of wood to be touching!

Thanks to some smashie smashie with my friends Mr Fubar and Mr Jecub, I have a car full of wood.

Put pallets on tines like so:

Lower tines, thereby stripping most of the planks off ready to be finished with the Fubar.

Line boot with non-poke-y bits:

Fill boot:

I really hope I don't need to get at the spare tyre...

For anyone that's interested, you can fit about 4 broken pallets in the boot of a Hyundai i30. This was a mixture of beefy and weedy pallets. I slightly over estimated, and had to put some bits in the back of the car as I took 5 pallets.

If anyone has a big magnet they can bring along that might be helpful  :tu:

Been shopping for food and beer today. What started off as a trip for pot noodles, pepperami and cous cous ended up with me getting myself waffles, gammon steaks and mussels too :D .... remembered to throw the ice packs for the coolbox in the freezer when I got back as well  ;)

Garden lighting is all stripped down ready to pack, and gas carts are on hand. Also sorted out the camping stoves and gas/meths/pine cones for fuel, and dug the tents out of the shed. Been to see Farmman (flying visit) this evening and grabbed the big tent for daytime deluges.

No knives, tools, axes, clothes, bedding or toiletries packed yet  ::) although I have been and fetched my splitting maul and wood grenade, so at least we have the heavy duty log botherers to hand. I'll chuck a few knives and tools in a box (most people have seen all my gear anyway), and then need to pick up a few more bits from the boatyard tomorrow. There's a big log down there which needs to meet Tony's bucket of tormentors.

Tom - big magnet - talk to me! I have a sea searcher magnet down at the boat for fishing stuff out of the canal. That good enough, or is it overkill? Gimme an idea what you're after and why mate  :pok: :D

Kirky and Sparky talk "big choppers" and  Smashie asks "what's in the box?".

Yes, you really can boil water in a plastic bottle on a fire.

Proving that once in a while I will actually look at a camera (just so long as it's dark enough that you can't really see me ;)).  Shortly before we had to move under cover due to rain.

some of my favourite Quotes of the weekend ~
"are we there yet?"   - Kirk13 (too many times to count)
"there are hot showers available" -sparky (when people arrived...just before he said ''hello'' ;) )
"is that rain ???" - everyone !
"Is Cupboard here yet?" everyone apart from cupboard (who wasn't there)
"anyone fancy a cold shower ?" -Sparky (uncomfortably often for a male only meet)
"your breakfast seems to be on fire Tony" - Me (sitting close enough to put it out )
"here you go TD, take this tin of haggis home with you" Gareth (my best mate  :gimme:)

It was a good giggle as always. Good to see the lads again, and good to meet smashie too

The weather was a little inclement at times, but that didn't dampen our spirits, we'd just retreat into the "clubhouse" to continue the merriment. We risked sending TD to the chippy, armed with Kirky for back up ... this was a bit of a gamble considering the "detour" they'd made on the way to the meet  I ate quite well for the rest of the meet, Saturday was egg waffles followed by venison sausages for breakfast, mussels in white wine sauce for lunch, and pesto filled ravioli with pancetta and fresh veggies (with some very nice cheese crumbled on top - cheers mate  :tu:) for dinner ... and I got a few "looks" from those who'd just brought tins of beans and such  >:D :D :D

Gareth couldn't get his own axes to stick in the target :neener: but I did :P However, he got his own back by pipping me in the shooting competition - the four prize winners were Gareth, me, Cupboard and Kirky ... all with Tofty's rifle which must have been tough for him  >:D I'll post up a picky of the prize when I finally get round to unpacking everything  ::) Other items thrown at the log included a CS Trailhawk, SOG hawk of some description (ask kirky), small axe purloined from Tony's infamous bucket, and a bowie bushman on a long stick. I'd have liked to have tried the ninja throwing pegs too, but they were holding Tofty's tent down

I managed to trade my imensely frustrating Squirt P4 for Tom's Gerber Dime - a most satisfying trade for both of us, as we were both convinced the tool we had received was several times better than the one we had parted with  :D I also managed to part with a LED lenser headlamp, and received a rusty billhook, footprints wrench, and a nice heavy frying pan :D I also did a bit of a stove swap, but can't really give details as I don't know the names of either of them  :D :D :D

I did briefly decide to try out the Zebralight SC30 as a headlamp, but found I could only get the light to point where I wanted to if I wore the headband under my nose, much to Cupboards amusement  ::) I quickly reverted back to the Silva Ninox to avoid annoying my friends there with incessant profanities and childish tantrums  :P

The first night my tent (Outwell Arizona) leaked quite badly, so I broke out the little ye olde Vango Delta 200 for the second night, although I did have a pop-up tent stashed beneath the car ready to deploy if I (or anyone else) had a tent crisis during the night. It wasn't needed though, and everyone else fared quite well with their tents .... well, apart from Tofty whose porch tent pole disintegrated on deployment, but we got round that one  :tu: Not that we spent much time in the tents after stopping up drinking and talking gibberish till the early hours.

Tony had the decency to injure himself in advance of turning up, so save any of us any inconvenience, I had a wee flare up of meths vapours, and the fire decided to torment kirky for a couple of minutes, but there were no actual injuries that I know of (or remember).

TD was gracious enough to watch on as Sparky's breakfast caught fire, and me and Good Sir Kirk did the same while Tom's potatoes (not a euphamism) nearly did the same thing. I told him I had some welding gauntlets in the boot of the car with which he might rescue his dinner and he went darting across the field, whilst me and kirky graciously watched on unperturbed.

All in all a damn good weekend, and I look forward to the next one  :tu:

EDIT: Yikes! There's been a heck of a lot of posts whilst I've been tying that up  :o Where's the piccy of kirky boy with his prize ... :pok:  :D

And Gareth too but apparently shoots the "wrong way" around. :P We have weirdly high percentage of southpaws here on MTO, actually. We did a poll some time ago. :D

Very true.  You can blame my dad for teaching me to shoot 'off handed'. ::)  Frankly if I put a rifle up to my left shoulder it  feels utterly unnatural, however I do hold a pistol in my left hand.  I also play two handed bat games (cricket, baseball etc) as a righty, but play one handed racquet game as a lefty.  Yes, I am a little confused too.

I shoot off the left but otherwise we are the same. I play darts and table tennis equally with both. I'll surfcast with the right and flycast with the left. I throw and catch better with the right and play kendama better with the left.

there was a long conversation about 'loony lefties' and how they tend to be more ambidextrous than us 'normal folk' because they often get bullied/taught to do things by well meaning 'Righties'

*I need to share this on the forum ~ the first rule of  :MTO: is "no politics or religion" yes ?
so under wet canvas, face to face and armed to the teeth, an ALCOHOL fuelled debate raged till after 2am, but without bloodshed (there were a few bloodshot eyes in the morning mind ;) )
just proves some people can be adults eh ?  :D

To me cheese is cheese, whether it's soft cheese, hard cheese ...

Actually, just googled it (didn't really know what you meant), and I would say cheese slices or maybe processed/pretend/plastic cheese. I've never known it as American cheese

I prefer real cheese though .... so long as it isn't blue (makes me really ill)
