Title: Corporate Etching on MT's?
Post by: 1jump2many on September 30, 2009, 05:50:37 AM
I notice if you want to get a retired Leatherman MT in NIB or Mint condition most of the time they seem to be a promotional version with corporate etching on them.  What are members opinions of how this etching effects the value of a retired MT?  Do you think it devalues it, or possibly increases the value?  I'm curious to see what others think so if I decide to buy one I can better have an idea of what to expect to pay.

I dont know if it affects the value or not, but I dont want any with corporate logos on them. I know some out there look for those.

It depends on the logo with me.

I prefer no logo but if the price is right and I want it bad enough then the logo means nothing to me and I will work to remove it some how.

If its a user then I really don't care.

For a collection it would depend on the logo/corporation.  A cool logo would increase my interest, where as the details of Smith & Bloggs Accident Lawyers would be a definite turn off :)

What do you guys use to remove the logos... without damaging the finish of the MT itself?

Brasso and patience?  :)

I was wondering that too.  A torch and grinder?   :D

I did not like having Microsoft branding on my LM Pulse , so I used my Dremal  :D :D. See Here http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,6375.0.html (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,6375.0.html)

Cheers bud - I got exactly the same problem with my Pulse.  I've been tempted to dremel it but never got around to it.  Might give it a go now :tu:

Was the Windows logo actually etched or was it more of a paint?  The job you did looks great.  A bit shinier that the rest of the tool but definitely a good job.  I was recently looking at the same Pulse with the Windows logo on eBay but passed.  Now with your directions I won't be as shy about getting an MT with a logo on it.  Thanks for the help.

I won't buy one with a LOGO unless it's a company I like, which I rarely see.

I would love for Leatherman to sell a miltary echted line.  I would buy a Marine Corps on in a heartbeat.  I think that they would be big sellers.

Definitely not  paint 'falling from sky man' it is Laser etching I think Def/Grant gave a good description of the process in the linked thread :tu:. I could easily enough have polished the rest of the Pulse , but that Pulse has been emarked for a paint job  :D :D

I've had a few tools with that style of etching on them. I completely buggered up a brand new Wave with my first attempt, but with a very fine grit sandpaper and plenty of patience, it can be done quit neatly. Generally, I try to avoid them if I can.

Correction!

I've got a couple of Bears with "MAC tools" etched on them - which I elected to leave alone as they don't bother me too much.

I avoid the tools with corporate logos if possible. Perhaps its just me, as I tend to despise advertising in general, which is really what these logos are all about typically. :-\

Dave, you've got so many MT's I figured you collected not only particular models but same models with corporate logo's on them.  :D  Hypothetical question because I'm sure you have EVERY MT ever made, if you didn't have a particular retired tool and found it on eBay, brand new, at a decent price, would you buy it?  I want to get the retired Leatherman tools I don't already have and it seems if you want one in NIB or Mint condition they are the promotional ones.  The thing is, I won't be using them though.  If I wanted an Original Super Tool because I just had to have one and was going to use it as an every day tool I wouldn't care if the logo was for a tampon brand.  :o  But I want to get these retired MT's for collecting purposes and want them in mint condition.  I guess I will have to either live with a logo or have more patience.  :bnghd:

Well, I certainly don't have every tool ever made (yet ;)), you're confusing me with J-Sews :D

As for the collecting thing, I think it's a personal thing.

Out of all of the tools that I have, there's probably only a handful that I wouldn't use for fear of damaging them, things like the very fragile painted Micras for example. On the whole, I use all of them every now and then, but of course if I used a different tool every day - I'd probably only get to use them once or twice a year! In practice, I tend to favour certain tools (and most people on here would know what they are), and the others get randomly dragged out if I need a tool at home and think about it, very occassionally.

Now, because of the above, almost every tool of mine is technically a user, and therefore a logo doesn't actually worry me much at all as it wouldn't impare it's use. I don't think any of my tools have a real high monetary value, and I generally don't buy tools with a resale value in mind. So thinking about it properly, I don't think it matters one bit to me. If I was going to frame one and hang it on the wall it might, but with few exceptions I like to beat on them, so it doesn't!

I do frequently acquire duplicate tools with a view to trading them for tools I want, so then I'd have to consider logos and such, but on the whole - I don't think it bothers me much at all!

I've been on a spree the last couple days, or at least a spree for me.  I bought an Original Super Tool and last night I bought a Pulse.  Now all I need is a Sideclip, Flair and a Super Tool 200 to round out my retired Leatherman list.  The Sideclip is my next target, it is the one I have wanted the most.

There are a couple current production Leatherman models I need to get but I'm in no hurry.  The Blast, Skeletool CX, Fuse and Crunch.  Of those I want the Crunch the most.  I've never been a fan of the Skeletool and only have the Skeletool not the CX.  But now that the Skeletool CX has a plain edge blade I'm more interested.  I'm a huge fan of the Freeplay but wish they had incorporated the bit driver on it.  That would be my perfect EDC MT.  I wonder, is it actually owning the MT's or the thrill of the chase?   :D

Instigator!  LOL.  :D :D :D  So many MT's, so little time and $.  I've got a Mini but I'll have to add the PST II to the list.  I'm not interested in the Charge XTi or Ti.  I have a Charge TTi and will eventually pickup a Charge AL.  As far as Pocket-Size retired tools, ahhhh, they don't really interest me.  Maybe after I've gotten everything else I want.  It's all about priorities, and I'm still trying to figure them out. :ahhh

I kind of like having Microsoft Server 2003 on my Pulse, which I got from someone here.  That's mostly because I do Windows programming, one of my other net-handles is "Static-Pulse," and I collect multitools.  It's sort of an inside joke trifecta for me.

MM, I have two Leatherman S2's, Flame Orange and Storm Gray.  I like the S2 a lot but the others never did anything for me.  I might get a Cs4 one of these days though.  It's down the list of MT's to get though.

I'm slowly on my way to getting the retired Leathermans I want.  I got an Original Super Tool yesterday and I got a Pulse in the mail just now.   :mail:  Can I get a witness, hail yeah!   :)  Both are in New/Unused condition.  The Original Super Tool has a coporate logo on it, "GAMA GAASI 2001", which I have no idea who or what that is.  It doesn't bother me though.  The Pulse is logo free and is awesome!

The three retired tools I most want now are the Sideclip, PST II and the Flair in that order.  Then of course there are a few non retired tools I need to get.  The Crunch being at the top of that list.  I'm going to have to slow down a bit though, if I can help myself.  My wife is starting to give me that, you're buying too much, look. :ahhh
