Superb!
Have the kids managed to wrestle it off you Mark, or has it found a special place in the man cave? :D
-
Yes I ........ The kids have quite bit of Lego star wars and when it comes to taking it apart I have been known to use the ppp. I know you want to know the ship cost £5.

So far so good with the PPP, there are some definite design flaws but for me I can see this tool working out quite well. The compound leverage did seem to increase the force that could be applied but I couldn't really tell by how much. All the hard wire I have available was able to be cut by both the Charge TTI and Vic Spirit. So I had to move the goal posts a bit. I searched through the odds and ends bin of nails and screws and found a hard nail that I couldn't cut with both the Spirit and the Charge using one hand only. Then I tried the PPP (with a bandana wrapped around the handles ::)) and was able to cut it one handed with even a bit of strength left to spare. Nice and with no damage to the cutters :tu: I'm a believer now :D

Yep, I gotta say, this is my first SOG product of any kind and I'm pleasantly surprised. The only real what-the-smurf moment I've had with it was using the "can opener". Seriously it wasn't just blunt there was 1/32 of an inch of visible flat edge on it  I put a quick edge on it with a DMT extra-extra coarse hone and was actually able to fully open a can. It still needs another 5 - 10 minutes of sharpening for it to become truly useful.
I have a saw on order from SOG and was planning to swap the blade for the saw but looking closely as I close the tool, it almost appears that there is enough room to squeeze in a saw and a blade in the same side. Is the possible

Ive got the saw instead of a blade and i dont think it is possible, i might give it a go though but i think it will be too tight for the pliers to go in
-
How does the saw work for you? Looking at the pics it looks quite well designed.

The woodsaw works really well,as good as LM's i also add the bit adapter to the large driver to add more driver options, :tu:

Well I received a saw for the PPP this weekend. I put it in next to the blade and found I could only close the tool by pressing the saw over just slightly while folding it. This was an unacceptable comprise for me. But then I got to thinking that if I swapped the positions of the saw and blade (saw being the outermost tool) then the taper of the knife tip might allow the pliers head to clear. I tried this and it does basically work. If you look closely as you fold it you can see the pliers head just clear the tip of the knife and then push it out of the way very slightly. It may scratch the tip of the knife blade over time but shouldn't dull or blunt it. If SOG would just make the handle a little bit thicker it would easily accommodate two long tools per side.

I will give this a try later but i did line up the blade in this way and it looks very tight and possibly scratch the blade and pliers, ill give it a go later but i agree i wish sog made a slightly wider version of this tool as i like its size and i woudltn mind it a little wider if i could fit a couple more tools, the paratool is like this in the way i could fit the v-cutter and wood was but the pliers stuck up out of the handles :-\ that bugged me :D
-
Just received mine this morning, switched out the blade for a saw.

I bought a used SOG S45 Deluxe Pocket Power Pliers some time ago. Got rid of the Robertson driver and swapped out the half serrated blade knife for a full straight edge blade.
Recently, I transplanted the individual bits from the S-45 into a Paladin Powerplay PT-510 frame and kept the PT-510 pliers head.
Wish SOG would upgrade the PPP with blade locks.

Finally bought a PPP. Been wanting one for years, they just don't seem to come up second hand ond ebay at all. Also put several wanted adds on this forum but no bites. Considering the quantity of gerbers and leathermans that go by i still wonder whether its simply unpopular or no one is willing to part with theirs!
Anyone have a fixed solution for the hurty handles?
My first true multitool purchase was a powerlock which i always ytake for the rough heavy duty task.. and the PPP truly seems like the ideal size for daily carry. If only it had handle covers (or simplier external opening tools like a swisstool) and locking tools. Its why i carry a leatherman blast... don't particularly care for the leathermans but it has the right size/implement/function for worldy use
-Hey i've been gone for about 120 days so my first post should be a 120 day grave dig right?
-
I EDC a PPP, this is the club for me!
I took out my can opener after shearing off the screwdrive tip and put a Robertson in its place. I also took out the combo blade in favor of a fully serrated blade. While the implements do leave a bit to be desired, the compound leverage is just too dang good.
C'mon, SOG, make a PPP with gear covers and locking tools.

Im with you on the gear covers :tu: i also wish sog would do a update or another similar mt like the ppp but with wider handles so you can have large tools both sides of the handles, more like a mini power pliers :tu: but iam a fan of the ppp and ive replaced the blade/serrated for a wood saw and put scissors in place of the file (not sog scissors) combined with my opie #5 this set up works well for me :tu:

i got sog scissors for my powerlock... never bothered using once i finally installed it properly and tested it out.
What makes the PPP so good is its size/weight wider handles for extra tools may effect this?

I know what you mean but just a little more for one more larger tool ::) :D ive got the sog scissors on my powerlock and find them ok they dont lock up as well as the other tools and sometimes i have to puch the lock in but the scissors work on on mine :tu:

If i look at my blast it is considerably bulkier and heavier than my PPP. I think if you add width you need to thicken the metal to strengthern the overall structure ro withstand the external twisty-torque-something-technical-sounding-but-the wording eludes-me
As for my powerlock scissor oh they work, just not as well as any other scissors i've come across in various brand pocket knives or plier based multitools.
Its ok cause SOG has compound leverage and damn that makes a difference. The replacable implents also nice. You can find you ultimate personal combination. and abuse them with the knowledge that if they do break then so what?

I have a PPP and want to make it similar to the above for EDC. Just can't get my head around what tools fit where etc.
Hi Zed,
A couple of Qs if you don't mind. The wood saw? I see it on HH site for sale but it's not for PPP? What did you have to do to make it fit?
What/where are the scissors from, again, where they hard to fit??
-
Hi mate,ok the saw was from hh and fits no problem as I'm sure all parts fit both mt's the scissors came from a cheaper mt and just needed a little bit of filling to close flush .the clip is a leatherman clip modded.hope this helps :tu:

Oh dear, might be payday after payday. Had a slight DIY hicup today >:(
Who would think that taking a shower door frame off would pull down all the tiles under it and the plaster with it! Another quick job that's going to take a bit more work and money than expected.

Recently ordered a couple. Could someone tell me the difference between the three models I have seen available...S44 the S44-N and the S44-L. The ones I ordered appear to be stone washed finish oppossed to the polished I see that most of you have posted.

i guess there's no other option but to buy a SOG PPP...in black of course!

The -N and -L might denote nylon verses leather sheaths.

I'm in.
I just got a power pliers in the mail this morning:)
its my second power pliers I gave my first one to my brother in law. He still uses it. Going on year 5.

id like to join too please. this is a cool little MT, i am seriously debating getting another and the price was outstanding.

Hm  Torx screws. :-\ I'm not sure I like this "update".
Nice tool at a great price nonetheless. :tu:
-
I've had mine for going on a month now... Nice tool but it's hell on your palms using anything other than the pliers...
Not sure they are torx, they can be adjusted with an allen wrench so they are what I would call hex screws... however, I have been known to be wrong more than my share
-
 You're right. Hex screws. My mind went straight to torx. It's been programed that way for years by the knife industry. ;) I was referring to the switch from the screws you could adjust with the 1/4" driver they were using before.
-
Arent those called hex-holed or Allen screws? Hex Screws and bolts are the standard hexagonal heads, IIRC.
-
I really really really like my power pliers after I swapped out the blade for a saw.
if I could cram a scissors in there too while keeping the file it would be a dream multi for me.
it close the way it is. :)
I think I might look for a leather sheath for it. The nylon sheath is kinda ugly.
-
I'm in the club too now!
The tool cost £12 shipped from Germany and comes with a really nice old school SOG leather pouch. The tool shows its age and is ever so slightly dented on one of the handles but it still functions nicely. Besides, I like the 'patina'.
Being a compulsive fiddler I had to fiddle! I replaced the blade with a v-cut to make it even more UK friendly ::) and the can opener with a 1/4" driver. I have also added a small screwdriver/bottle opener. This is mainly to take up the space of those nylon spacer washers. As additional spacers I used a single M4 stainless washer on each side. Yes, that means I now have 2 bottle openers. :drink: Finally in addition to this I added a nice belt clip I had lying around.
Further fiddlings may include:
1. Filing a wire stripper hole into the wire cutter.
2. Filling an electrical connector crimp into the handle.
Dammit, now I am jonesing for a PT-510!
-
Y U no post pictures of the pocket clip? ???
Hoping to be joining soon, myself...
-
oops! it is on the other side!
-
@ xt60043f that looks great i like the 1/4 driver a lot.
-
@ xt60043f £12 !!!! Was that a 1 off, or from a shop?
Nice mods too, :D
-
Heh. It was an ebay auction from Germany. I guess I just got lucky.
-
And just like that, I am in!
Just got it out of the mailbox yesterday. This is my first SOG and I have to say that I am impressed. Quality is better than LM. I got the nylon sheath and I like it quite a lot. Although, it is too bad it does not come with a pocket clip, because this thing is perfectly sized for pocket carry. I may rig a clip for it later. I like the stock tool loadout as is, but I despise empty space so I will add something just to replace those spacers - just need to decide what, though... Hmmm
-
I'm back...I just can't keep away from these things
I'd traded or gifted off 3 of the 4 I'd had,but now have Zeds old one :multi:

It wouldn't surprise me Paul...this one has a good vibe to it
-
It´s a nice tool but it was a shame to keep it in a drawer - Had to move it on to a loving home...
-
Hi guys, this is my first post after being a big fan of the website and forum. I'm starting here because these were my last two multi-tool purchases. I got them both new on ebay for great prices, $29 for the BO and $35 for the 510 (both prices include shipping).
I have always carried a wave or swisstool at work or a spirit or juice out and about. I like to carry the spirit with me but sometimes I want to carry something smaller and less heavy so I carry a kf4, both tools are great. I love the juice but I found that sometimes I find myself where it would be better for me to carry something smaller than the spirit but might need to do something that might be more than the juice pliers can handle. The ppp is perfect for those days!
You know those days when you meet up with friends at one of their apartments before going out and before leaving they ask you to look at something small that needs fixing. If one of those friends asks me if I want to just come over and hang out I will bring my wave or swisstool, if they invite me over for dinner I ask if I should bring my toolbag!
I prefer the juice platform with all the outside opening tools and that swiss army knife feel but the ppp has it's own nice look and feel that is also great to carry/handle. The ppp's pliers just beat the juice's and i like the longer drivers also. If I'm just out and about and want to carry a small multi-tool I am not expecting to use, I will carry the juice, if I expect to use the small tool I'm putting in my pocket, it's going to be the pocket power plier.
-
I'm in :D Got mine today, and I must say I'm pleased with it. It's rather different with how the handles open and how the pliers work compared to what I'm used to with Leathermans. The handles don't open independent of each other, but rather work together due to the gears (which everyone here obviously knows) and it's a smooth action that I like. I noticed that it also has an available spot on each handle to add a tool (I assume). I'm not sure how to go about getting them, or what ones would be best for each slot as I think they have to be short tools. Any guidance on that would be appreciated :salute: Here are some pics:

@ Detron
wow dude ive been busy so all ive had time for is a quick browse. you got yourself a great little tool there. I love the compound leverage and can squeeze the heck outta those handles. I also like the slanted plier head as it helps grasp things without having to be flush against the surface of what you are grasping. great slim carry and with the lego system you can order parts from SOG or find them online. pretty great finish on it too I think, and if yours came with the little sheath I found that to be very comfortable to carry.

The tools seem nice too, although I noticed the knife blade bends fairly easily compared to say, the PST blade, but I don't use my knives as prying tools, so that shouldn't be an issue. I like the finish too, and the tools, while not locking, do snap in fairly tight, so that's good at least.
-
Oh, and it did come with the nylon sheath with a plastic belt clip. Seems like a nice sheath that would be good for carry, but I don't sheath carry anyway. It's funny, I have a nice little collection of sheaths that I don't use.

I recently got an old leather LM sheath, its really thick leather but I prefer the nylon ones for daily carry and im really liking the NiteIze case I also recently got. I use my modded ( belt clip added ) spirit case as it rides very nicely on the belt. The awl on my PPP is WICKED sharp so be careful. I really like the PPP very much and actually even more so than the Paratool.

Do they still make the PPP?

I just got mine through Amazon, and they are still in stock, so I'm assuming they do.

I have one of the older/thick SOG Power Pliers, it's tough and has a lot of crushing/cutting power.
Here's a penny that met the SOG, it's cut and folded over. I don't think I could do that with any of my non-SOG multitools...at least not as easy as I did.

I'm not sure if there's a thread for pics of our PPP's outside (that didn't come out well ;)), so I'll post them here.

Yeah, I can see how that could be an issue. One thing that is an issue for me is opening the pliers when in use. With the way the handles spread apart together, they have to be spread quite a ways apart to really open the plier jaws wide. That may not be an issue to anyone with larger hands or longer fingers, but I have smaller hands and shorter fingers, so I can only easily open them so far one handed. Then, the further I have to open them, the harder it is to get my fingers around the handles to squeeze them. This isn't an issue on any other MT for me as the jaws open directly in proportion to the handle opening. I still love the smoothness of my PPP, but the jaw opening issue is annoying. I probably really don't need to normally open them that far for my typical use, but I can see how it could be a bother for some.

Much happier with it than my Powerlock. I think it might be a keeper.

Strange how many times this happens :D
-
I wasn't a fan of the tool covers on the Powerlock. My locks were finicky beyond all reason, I LOATHED the black oxide coating, and I felt that it wasted a lot of internal space. And it was just too big.
The PPP, though... stainless steel, very little wasted space, same great plier head. Yeah, a pretty decent tool.
-
dont have a PPP, yet. I love the powerlock. I figure the PPP would be a nice tool for light days.

This reminded me that I traded off my PPP. I guess I'll turn in my club membership card.
But I'll always remember the good times. :D

I'm in the club What a gorgeous tool! Lighter and more compact than expected, and smoooooth baby smooooooooooooth. Very impressed so far!

I really like it, I bought so I don't trash my pst. Not sure about the exposed gears especially when using the drivers. I'm going to hammer on it so time will tell.

Cool. Yeah, it sounds like the gears can be annoying. I have rarely carried mine after the initial newness factor wore off. The main thing I like about it is the smooth action of opening up the handles.

I'm in, have been for a while now
I think this MT is highly under rated
Anyone who missed out on the Leatherman PST or hasn't been able find one, would be well served with the
SOG PPP
The plier's head is excellent IMHO, weight is great, and basically one hand opening
But you all know that
-
Here's mine...
-
Dear PPP Owners....
I've been thinking about getting one for some time and making it bladeless, since the bladeless fuse is impossible to find, and swapping out the blade for scissors. My concern is that the edges on the tool when the pliers are deployed look EXTREMELY uncomfortable. Is that just looks, do they eat into your hands or are they normal with other multi's in terms of comfort?
btw, for background sake I have experience with wingman, diesel, flik, powerduo, mp600, rebar, wave, and others. Thanks ahead for the replies.
-
Not sure about the PPPs. My Powerlock have the handle covers on them. I take them off every now and again and for the most part the handles when cutting or gripping stuff don't seem to bother me unless I am really torquing down on something. The PPPs remind me more of a LM PST.

I broke one tip of the plier. Does anyone know where replacement tips may be purchased?
-
You can send it to SOG and they will fix it free of charge. Or you can buy the plier head for around $15 and fix it yourself.
Nate

Thanks
-
No problem. I forgot to say, if you buy the plier head form SOG and fix it yourself, it DOES NOT void the warranty.

An amazing good little MT, and legal in countries with no-lock laws. One of the best accurate pliers for tight spaces ever. Esp. electronic device chasis, and tight spaces wiring. I have it dangling around my neck when doing small work. If I did that with my Surge I'd be on disability collecting National Insurance maintenance .

Here's mine.
Replaced a dearly loved Bucktool with a broken lock spring. Buck's "lifetime warranty" says I can have $70 worth of knives I don't want, but no repair on my tool.
Anyway, I'm digging the PPP. Swapped in the wire stripper, which is decent. Looking to add a couple more small tools in the washer spots. Maybe fit in a Vik scissors.

After owning many multitools the PPP is the only one I have kept. Thanks to ThePeacent for selling it to me, I probably would never have bought one if it hadn't have turned up on the classifieds here. For me it's the perfect pocketable size with more capable pliers compared to the PST. The exposed gears have never been an issue, in fact I like the industrial design. Legal to carry here in the UK too.

very glad to see it's working out for you.
I lost mine on August 2017 but I loved it too and always thought it had no competition in its size and weight/thickness category,
a tool ahead of its time and very easy to carry with you

Never mind the 90 day warning, this thread is 6+ months old, but needs reviving. :)
Just picked up this PPP. Classic geared SOG design, and in my opinion, a worthy challenger to the PST for a compact carry with a good tool load. A little lighter (144g vs. 150g), but less folding tools. However I think better designed tools. Eg medium flat driver has a bottle opener, tin opener has small flat driver, file is tapered (in thickness) to a large flat driver, awl is a wicked sharp, almost tanto blade, and the main blade is combo SE/PE, but the entire edge is chisel ground making it scalpel-sharp.
Pliers have a true needle-nose and meet perfectly. The compound leverage is a quirk, but it does work well (as attested in this thread). IMO, the gears are no more of a hot spot than the sharp corners of the PST handle at the plier end when open.
Lastly, the nylon sheath is compact and well-made, with a nice belt clip for quick attachment.
This SOG joins my PowerAssist and Paratool MTs. I’m sure there will be more. :pok:
-
its strange that this is the only sog ive ever really been interested in yet i dont own one  i requested it from my wife one year for christmas and ended up getting a reactor instead, shes not very good with multitool names
-
It's a great little SOG...nice and light and a good balance of tools IMO. :tu:
Something I did not mention was the asymmetrical pliers. Really nice for getting a purchase on a 'flat' item you want to grip.
Even though I'm an LM fanboy, I can recommend this SOG :like:
-
maybe i like it so much cause it reminds me of the pst :tu:
-
maybe i like it so much cause it reminds me of the pst :tu:
So true! It shares many traits of the PST but unlike many copies of days gone by, the SOG has its own unique character. :iagree:
There’s always your next birthday. :pok:
-
true... but i asked for a mp600 basic for my birthday  maybe i should change my mind, of course june the 8th is a long way off
-
...it’s also discontinued so that gives you some time to find one :salute:
-
Like the PST, only it is a bit better, with the exception of the bad file. Plus, you can switch out tools on a whim, without voiding the warranty. Originally, I ditched the partially serrated blade it came with and had the plain and serrated blades from my Paratool in it; now its just the serrated blade and file for long tools. File will probably be replaced with the wire stripper component.
I want to fill the bushing used to fill in for the missing short tool (this isn't a "Deluxe" model). What short tool can I fit in there?

Congrats on the PPP, Max! Sure is an underrated tool on MT.o. :like:
-
Cody,
Maybe this will help with the SOG file issue. Some of the files are good and other just fair.
Here are my four PPPs and their files.

Left to right:
Excellent file(round end). Good file(early flat driver end). Fair file(later flat driver end). Fair file(later flat driver file). The tools look weird, because I enhanced the color to show the file cuts for you.

Find yourself a round ended file for the PPP. If that doesn't work for you, no file will. :)

My new to me PPP.

That’s a great find JonesE. :like:
And the leather sheath is nice and compact too. A great belt carry EDC. Along with the PST, the PPP is the best lightweight MT that is still full-size. :tu:

Thanks Max, I have to say that I am really liking the PPP. It is really smooth to open and it just seems like a very good quality tool. I am impressed.
