Unfortunately, I don't own a van, but it's really cool and must be quite comfy vs sleeping on the hard surface.

LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!!!!!
-
I did before I got me tent
I got a air mattress that fits the back of my Montana perfect.
-
Here in NZ we don't camp in vans, outside is so much more enjoyable...;)
-
Yup. I built a slat bed that can go in my van for camping and err... going to parties (saves on taxi fares).
-
Oh you mean a flip n' f......eerrrrr yeah, going to parties.

Yes, I've fitted out my VW Transporter T5 with a slat bed base and a custom built innerspring mattress (with a 12v electric blanket for those colder nights). I go to a lot of dog agility trials and prefer to camp on the trial grounds if possible, and I do like my comfort when sleeping. It's also better to be in the "tin tent" than under canvas/nylon when it rains.
I find campervans are always a compromise between interior room and ease of driving and parking. My VW is on the small side, but drives as well as most cars on the highway, and gets much better fuel economy than the larger (more comfortable, more roomy) campervans. I do lots of miles driving to and from trials, and usually only stay one or two nights, so I prioritise driving over camping.

When I was I kid, I enjoyed many a summertime where we would drive anywhere in my uncle's old Ford van that he had equipped with folding chairs and a bed, along with wooden planks to serve as insulation. Good times. He still has it, he carefully does maintenance on it himself.
Me, I'd fancy me a nice old hippie VW van, I think they're great for long trips. One day, some day...

OR, you could have the best of both worlds.

Is that a tent?
On second thought, I've seen worse ideas...
Edit: Seriously, what is this supposed to be, please?

Good size yeah, don't have to just stand in the middle and hunched over everywhere else, but the first gust of wind and the VW's going to end up in an accident, lol.. JR

I wonder if you could use it as a car cover, haha
-
Would be great for a VW van.

I haven't since the late 70's when I had the customized van but me and the misses have been thinking about getting a van size camper for some short trips/stays. :D
-
I don't have a van but if I did it wouldn't bother me to camp in it. Even down by the river

I prefer to keep these camping knives in the hunting accessories for my bug out bag. I usually take my car to any camping trip, so I keep all these accessories always in my car.
