Title: Tim Leatherman Visit, What Should zoidberg Do
Post by: zoidberg on October 29, 2018, 09:28:14 AM
In a week and a half, Tim Leatherman will be an hours drive from me.
It's part of the 35th anniversary world heritage tour.

I'll try to get a seat reserved and attend the event.
Let's say this does happen...

 :ahhh

...what should I do?

Do I gift him a modified MT? Or my cleanest MTo shirt? Or my MTo poker chip?
Do I ask him a million questions? If yes then which questions? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
What is protocol? And what do I wear? How many Leathermans do I belt carry?

Help!

 :ahhh

Get him to sign the MT.o shirt you will be wearing, while you're wearing it. Never wash it again. :gimme:

Just walk up to him and be like "sup?" :D

You'll be wearing the MT.o shirt for him to sign.  8)
And go all-out Batman-belt with every LM you have/can get your hands on. :tu:

That's what I would do. Well, that is what I would do if I didn't choke up, meeting the MT legend.  :)

YES! The most outrageous butchered mod you have (and can bear to part with).

Draw up plans and diagrams with lots of graphics on how, with your help, he can reassert his authority, stamp out dissension and improve the company... When he sees them along with your forceful delivery, he'll be very impressed... and you'll be well in!  :2tu:

well, zoid, I hope you can make it there just fine  :tu:

if it's anything like his visit to the 35 Year Anniversary Event in Barcelona, then:

- you'll make long queues to have your tools signed
- there is a limit to two tools per person to be signed  :P
- you will be able to talk to him during the time he spends signing your tools, 1-2 minutes at most  :ahhh
- I talked to him about he forum, he knows it exists and many people have talked to him about it during the years  :tu:
- you might be able to gift him something but he doesn't carry anything other than his pockets, belt sheath and pen in the shirt pocket, and he'll be moving around all over the place so he doesn't have much space on him to carry stuff. Maybe his wife or some staff member will be able to hold or save something for him but I'm not confident about that  :dunno:
- if you bring a marker/sharpie (like I did) and a catalog, shirt, book, or other stuff he'll probably be more than happy to sign it for you. Seeing that everybody wanted his stuff signed after me, I gave him my marker to keep so he could sign all the other people's things  :D
- in this event they gave a bracelet to all the reerved visitors, with a number to enter the raffle, as well as a catalog with a sticker, and a T-shirt (you choose your size)

here is Tim signing my tools in the event. I talked to him for about 2 minutes

finally, just be yourself. He is very open to all kinds of people and he's a straight shooter, so I'm sure you will get your point(s) across easily and quickly as he's very attentive and enthusiast about fans, questions, comments and opinions, and he's very down to earth and doesn't just sit on his laurels and enjoy what he's built from the top  :hatsoff:

A limit of two tools being signed you say ...
One or two minutes talk at most you say ...

Okay, I did sign up myself and both of my boys for an engraving session, so we had about 6 minutes tops for the entire family in theory, but after engraving my '94 Supertool, my PST, my Charge and both Charges from my boys he also signed a Leatherman Banner I brought with me, and took the time for some pics with me and my boys, and my baby girl, and we had a little chat about how many tools I owned, and which one was my favorite of the current line up (for me this is the Rebar, price/value wise), and he said his favorite was also the Rebar, since he thought of it as a modern PST.

When I handed over my tools for engraving he always opened them up, look at the date codes and the condition of the tools (he did this with every tool they gave him for engraving). He said that I shared first place with one other guy when it came to presenting him the oldest tool (my '94 Supertool) for engraving that weekend.

So in the end it was more like a 10 minutes event or so  :D

Oh, we also got some PST shaped pins, 3 Leatherman Buffs and some Leatherman pens.

P.S.: The pics from me and my boys and baby girl with Tim were taken by somebody who works for the Belgian Leatherman Distributor and were shown on their facebookpage (so it's not my fault that they are a bit out of focus ...  ::)).

I am a big fan of Leatherman and have a few users and a small collection of oldies (PST based)

But I am also a big fan of Victorinox

I am tempted to ask Tim what he thinks of Victorinox
I'd have to somehow make it clear I am not asking for comparisons - who's best etc - Just what he thinks of the Swiss company and their products

He seems like a really sound guy - So would not take offence and would give a reasoned, rational answer
And after all it was a pocket knife/SAK that inspired his original PST - eh?
Also they are not a direct direct competitor like a SOG or a Gerber - Personally I see the pliers based tool and the SAK as complimentary

PS.
I have read about Tim and his various visits (Shot Show etc) and also seen signed tools here on the forum
And always wished 'It could be me'  .......

Well now it is
I have applied for a regular ticket - And it has come through -  :ahhh - I also applied for the invite only event draw - That would be awesome if that happened.

I have also worked out what to get signed
I edc a black oxide PST (man bag - not pocket) - So it's perfect - It's my EDC - And the engraving would show through the BO which would look awesome
No. 2 tool (thanks for the tip Peacent) would be my son's Leap - How special would that be for him - Wow

I am getting quite excited   :woohoo:

From the Leatherman NZ Facebook page:

Quote
Tim Leatherman in New Zealand

Yesterday, while Tim was at a cafe he heard the tremendous roar of motorcycles go past. After the cafe stop, Tim and his group had to stop at the petrol station down the road and came across the group of motorcycles they had heard earlier.
Tim noticed that one of the motorcyclists seemed to have an issue with his bike and walked over to take a look. He asked if any of them used Leatherman tools, and as it happens - one was currently being used to help repair the bike!
The group did not believe Tim when he said he was the inventor of Leatherman, and had to pull out his ID as proof!
Cue excitement and lots of photos 😎

Hello gang
So I went up to the Auckland gig last night. I had a good reaffirmation as to why not to live there- dreadful traffic .
Anyway the gig was really cool . Cold beer, LMs for sale at reasonable rates and Tim was hanging around talking to the punters before the show.
They show the "Made of Mettle " movie and then he does a q&A session for as long as there are questions. There seems to be no off limits topics
and he will just decline those he does not want to answer ( so he says).
There is a photo session after the q&a for the "super fans" competition they ran here in NZ. That was done on the facebook forum so I guess I am like the Zoid who also missed that.
Those guys got a nice goody bag but I did not ask what was inside but it was hefty.
After the photo op he was signing tools and the queue is long. Some would have waited over 90 minutes.  I  would suggest after the Q&A find out where the signing table is and lurk there at the head of the queue for those going to the Christchurch or Aussie shows otherwise it could be a long wait.
There is also a goody bag for you before you go home with some LM stuff including a micra and a LM branded Led Lenser P3R.

All up a good night with a proper gentleman.

One more question one might ask is whether there are any plans to have LM start selling loose parts...? Could be a good alternative or addition to a true custom tool store, which would be even more desirable of course but may be unrealistic. SOG are doing it so why not?

Quick recap of the day.

Friday begins with some very heavy rain through the early hours and into the morning.
Then it starts to snow, yeah, three weeks off summer, timing.

Having dealt with rain, snow, flooding, animals, kids, visitors, work and yet another broken windscreen...
5pm couldn't come around quick enough but eventually it did and I was heading into the city.

Found the venue easily enough.
Got changed and put my nice clean MTo anniversary t-shirt on.
Randomly picked some modified Leatherman MTs to take in with the two I had chosen earlier to get signed.

Now to mingle.

Walked in and there was Tim chatting with a small group.
To one side Chau was playing table tennis with Nathan Rarere.

All of a minute passed by before one of the Leatherman Super Fan winners, Chrystian, recognized my MTo t-shirt.
If you check out his instagram here (https://www.instagram.com/victorinoxcollector/) you can watch (I took the video) him receive his prize bag.

The evening flew by and there I was in the MT signing queue.
I introduced myself as a MTo peep and he asked if I knew Grant?
Nar, never heard of him I replied I mumbled something about maybe knowing him.
Tim signed the Flair for my better half while I talked nonstop about it getting run over and how much she liked and used it.
As he signed the Signal I asked if he was interested in seeing a few of the customized MTs I had with me.

Having got the nod, I quickly displayed some of the MTs and Tim made some comments and took some pics.
About then I remembered there were still heaps of people waiting.
To show my appreciation for years of enjoying Leathermans I handed one back to him together with a MTo poker chip.

Yeah think that pretty much covers it.
Chrystian had missed the last bus so I dropped him off where he was staying.
Then I drove back out to the country listening to music really loudly.

Nicely done Zoidy - Class act

Looks like your mods are going down in the TL archives and who knows he may even EDC the one you gave him   :tu:

So MTo is standing proud down under - He'll be seeing (at least) two more of us this week
( ..... But who was that Grant fella? ??? )

Tuesday lunchtime is the event for the general public with the tour bus in Martin Place - Wednesday night is the invite only event
Planning to go to both !!

Glad all went well for you Zoid.  Thanks for the recap.

You described  great time, to bad you kept camera in pocket, I am sure he would have allowed one to be taken with you and he posing together in all MTO glory.

Poker chip is a nice touch, and better to share a favorite modded tool for him to have as a remembrance of his stay in New Zealand.

 :salute: :like:

It's the one pictured above.
I haven't posted more pics or mentioned the name because I was thinking of using them in a giveaway.
