Title: How many Leathermans have you lost?
Post by: Ingo on May 28, 2018, 01:15:46 AM
I've lost at least 6 of them from age 10-34.

My favorite was a Wave that I accidentally carried into O'Hare after I checked my bags on the way back to Arizona from a week fishing in far northern Wisconsin. I didn't have time to make arrangements so I gave it to a guy leaving the airport.

I've had probably 4 original Leatherman tools, a Wave, and Supertool that are all gone.

Now I just have a Charge, and my beloved Skeletool.

I'm super-happy for you that you weren't born with the short-term memory of a goldfish, as I was.

I just remembered I had another Wave for a few days that was stolen at work. I've kept my Skeletool longer than any other EDC knife I've ever owned (knock on wood).

Haha!!!    My memory isn’t always the best but I try to keep a routine when I carry a LM. Put it up so I don’t lose it.

Have not lost or mis placed a LM tool.

Technically you did not loose the WAVE since you gifted instead of forfeiting it.

That’s worth several good points at the final stop.

I have gifted a few to those that expressed interest or desire for the wonderful tool.

A Emerson CQC-7 was taken from a work site, found out about a year later that person suffered both $s lost and physical pain as result of the that knife. Another story though.

I've left mine many times in a suspended ceiling but i do the ole keys, wallet, phone check often and find my sheath empty before i leave the premises. Heart always flutters a bit when I feel that sheath empty, mind starts racing where did I lose it at.

I can lose a flashlight pretty often but never a knife or multi.

What happens when you start finding it more times than you lose/misplace it?  :)

I have never lost a Leatherman. Something like that would really bother me big time. Case in point...I worry about loosing my keys so much that I deliberately hang my keys off a D ring on a belt loop off my pants. At work, I jingle when I walk. That noise is a constant re-assurance that I still have them on me.

That's a very cool thing to do Ingo - I like you :salute: - I hope the guy appreciated it.

I've never lost a leatherman, but I have had them broken by others, broken them myself (cough)... Juice... (cough) and generally moved and sold a lot of them on... sometimes regretting it later...

I've broken Leatherman tools, but never lost one fortunately.

I've lost (misplaced) 4 folders and one fixed blade, 2 SAKs and one light
I've had a Gerber MP, four folding knives, and a tiny flashlight stolen

Fortunately I've never lost one. I did lose the knock off swiss army knife I had in the 80'same before I bought my first one - a Super Tinker. But that doesn't count. That's just dropping dead weight

Came very close. They have always been returned!

TSA inspected my bag both too Oregon and from Oregon. Had about 250$ worth of Leatherman hear from their store on the way back.

My charge tti made a trip without me to Illinois and back. (Friend of mine found it in his gear and returned it)

Lost me keys with a Micra, style, and nitecore on it multiple times.

I usually forget where I put something more so than lose it all together.

Amici,
I had a sweet Wave with a birthday of 2004. It disappeared while at the office when I was breaking down a desktop computer. I laid it down for a minute to go grab a cup of coffee, and POOF!! if was gone..

Cheers,
Serge

Welcome to  :MTO: Ingo. Nice idea for a thread.

I did not lose one yet.
But I once misplaced my Micra for a bit more than 10 years   :D

It was hidden in my bikes saddlebag, and I found it back 2 years ago when I started cycling again.

On a side note: All those years it was stored in a shed, and it had not developed any rust

I have lost one Juice XE6, which turned up a couple of years later in my sister's backpack . She kept it, so technically still lost
I almost lost its replacement at an airport in NZ when I thought it was in my checked case  :ahhh. Too late to recall my checked luggage, the Air NZ lady got me a box and I stuffed it in there with my pillow and picked it up at the other end.  :salute:

So far that's all, hopefully it stays that way!

None. If Leatherman had been around in my childhood, I would probably have lost one or two.

My wife gave a Wave to a new employee in her goat dairy, and I found it in the straw bedding. The worker had set it on a post, and was not aware of the nature of goats and shiny things. I never told him I found it. It was the first Leatherman I bought, and I still have after 19 years.

I never set smaller hand tools down as I work, and especially not in a barn with 600 hungry milking goats. If I don't need it for a moment, I automatically slide it back into the sheath, or a pocket, or even into my belt. Apparently lots of people do set down smaller hand tools, because in my barn-cleaning days I found many tools buried in the bedding & dung. Unfortunately long before nifty multitools were around, so I usually got pliers, wire cutters, hammers, screw drivers, baling hooks, and way too much baling wire. But also a few nice old fashion pocket knives.

Bushcrafting out in the wild, same thing. I never set a small tool down on ground or log. If I am on a tarp working, or have set up a small folding table, maybe.

Lost, I’m not sure is the right word to describe this story but this thread is probably the best place to tell.

When I was a boy my old man bought me a leatherman, I believe a PST although I cannot be sure. Around 8 years ago when I was still young and at the time I was doing it a bit tough, I had to move out of the house I was renting and in a rush I put it in an ammo box (my dad also bought this) and threw it out! Had the sheath too.

The only one that’s been lost.

I had it about 15 years. RIP

Found it! I slid in the backseat of the van a few days ago and over this bucket of marking flags. I'm guessing they grabbed the lanyard/pocket clip. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180714/55471da4efaf4237eaa59a9cdbeb4fcd.jpg)

Isn't it ironic that flags are usually used to draw attention the things?

The usual "find it" instructions are :

Where & when was it when you definitely (for certain) remember having it ?

Work forward from there, paying particular attention to places where you sat down on something low (car seats, couches etc) or where you might have used it.

PS  Make sure you are having a "girl" look, not a "boy" look.

Expand your peripheral vision took.  I once dropped my BO MT in the grass.  The light was getting low and I was searching all over.  The grass area I dropped the tool was approx 15feet X 20feet with some hedges.  I scoured what I thought to be every square inch with no luck.  I sat on my tail gate and thought oh well I tried.  Then I got up only to see it straight away.

Sorry to hear you hopefully temporarily misplace your MT.   Good luck and I hope you locate it soon.

I have never lost a leatherman. But I have had one mini and one large victorinox tools when I was a teenager, that I don’t know what happened to (I honestly don’t know what happened to them).

Same story about a few folding and fixed blade knives I have had.

But I never lost a leatherman tool, I am usually very cautious about my leatherman tools

I have not lost any Leatherman, but gave away a few. I think 3 standard 2nd-gen Waves, 1 Wave plus, 1 TTC-modded Wave, 1 TTC-modded Charge TTi, 1 purple XE6, 1 Squirt S4...; and only one of the Waves is used  something like that... Funny part is, I gifted these to ladies  >:D

That is just to show how easy to use the Wave/ Charge platform is.

A little trick with embedded commands...

The mind tends to remember positives more than negatives. The embedded positive command in "make sure you don't leave it there" is "leave it there". The brain easily forgets the negative. The reason this works, is the brain imagines doing the bad thing in order to know what it's trying to avoid. That positive command that you wish to avoid is retained, and can become stronger than the negative that's supposed to cancel it out, and the action to be avoided gets confused as a goal.

If you get into the habit of telling yourself to "remember to pick that up" instead, there's no negative to forget, and more chance of remembering to do that simple positive action.

It can also be a useful trick with with trainees and kids too. Tell them what NOT to do, and you can be pretty certain they'll do it. :D Tell them what TO do instead, and there's more chance they will.

Just thought I'd throw that in

Whelp. I seem to have misplaced my Skeletool CX. Which was the first Leatherman I purchased when I became a member of this site.

I don't think I've seen it since before we moved, I keep thinking I saw it somewhere but I've started to dig and haven't found it.

Going to check in more places tomorrow, bags, toolbox, under truck seats, etc...

I have lost somewhere between 5 and 10 Saks and Chinese knockoffs (probably 90% knockoffs but I'm sure there was at least one or two real Vics) in my youth before I knew there was a difference. But in my adult life I have lost possession of 4 Leatherman tools.
I lost 2 Micras that fell out of my pocket I assume. I assume this on both because that is how I had to have lost one at my buddy's house into his couch which he found there a couple weeks later. I had already replaced it so I let him keep it. And I figured that was how the one before it got away.
I lost a Rebar from my sister's junkie boyfriend being a thief. At least that is what I believe, I'm almost positive he stole this and a Blue Angels edition Citizen watch. But he is dead now so I think I got the better end of that deal....
And finally about 15 years ago I left my Pulse in an apartment I was doing some repair work in, never to be seen again. I gotta get another one of those, either Pulse or Micra is my most favorite Leatherman I figure out how to decide.

Recently lost my beloved ST200 at work. Left it in a truck I was working on, so whoever “found” it, I wish them many years of ST goodness. The funny thing is, it’s been in my collection box and not carried for a few years since I’ve gotten my wave. I wanted to switch things up for a week, to my regret....

Does the sense of loss at narrowly losing out on eBay count?

The only multitool that I've lost was a victorinox minichamp that was confiscated at at&t park in San Francisco.  I still kick myself, I easily could have left the security line, buried it in my wife's purse and been reentered the line.  I didn't think of it at the time.

In my experience Leatherman tools are hard to lost because it's a valuable item that you always have by hand in any case.
Most of the ones that I have "LOST" it's because somebody stole it from me!

I’ve never “lost” a tool, but...

Back when I was traveling 100,000 - 250,000 a year, over the period of 10 years,  9 of my Leatherman tools will pilfered from my check-in luggage. Joining them was also 11 butane soldering irons, various hand tools and an oscilloscope.

A few of the tools were wire tied to the inside of my luggage, but apparently, someone thought they needed them more than I did.

After the first few, I would take photographs of the contents and bag and verify everything was there the moment I picked them up. If anything was missing, it was an immediate trip to the airline luggage counter to file a claim.

"I also had a Squirt confiscated by the Secret Service"

In the UK that would count as an "Intimate Sample" following arrest

What on earth were you doing  :pok:

Back in 2016 we needed a good laugh, so we went to the Trump rally that came to town. I always keep a Squirt in my wallet, and forgot about it. It really hurt having to hand that tool over.

Bummer >:(

Well, I suppose you could have given him a nasty manicure with the scissors (he already has a nasty haircut)

NB: I will, naturally, steer clear of political opinions here  :dwts:

Could you not have returned it to your car or stashed it (after being busted) or was it a gun-point incident  :ahhh :ahhh

Seriously though, that would hurt me as well as they are between £45 - £55 here depending on where you look (about $56 - $69)

I didn't pay that much but it was still £35 ($44)

I could have returned it to my car, but it was a long walk with very long lines. It was also raining and cold. I thought hard about leaving but they were really pressing me. Not the nicest guys in the world. I bit the bullet and handed it over. It still bugs me to this day. I should have kept it. Oh well.
