I was going thru some draws and came up with a few items that I am willing to Giveaway.
The items are a mix of SAKs, tools, knives, flashlights and other small edc items.
Rather than a straight GAW, I thought I’d see if there was some interest in having a Surprise Box style giveaway.
I am going to pack as much as I can in a small flat rate shipping box, then send it to the first person chosen randomly. That person then gets to chose 1-3 items from the box, before sending it off to the next person who gets to do the same thing and down the list until we run out of items or people.
A couple of guidelines to better understand how it will work and agreement that you are making by signing up:
1. Due to shipping costs and not knowing if VAT and taxes would make worthwhile, only US shipping addresses. If there is enough interest from European members, I would be willing to send some items to start a European box.
2. Total number of participants is currently limited to 20 to ensure sufficient items. If I locate more items, I may increase. If so I will announce.
3. Depending on number of items that fit in box and people who sign up, there may be more than one surprise box and list. If so, the people assigned each box and order will be created randomly.
4. The box recipient can select 1-3 items to keep. If more than 1 item is selected then, recipient must add at least one item to the box for each additional item selected before shipping,
5. Anyone who signs up agrees to ship the items to the next person in a timely manner. This means willing to pay for shipping (small flat rate box currently priced at $8.45)
6. If you feel that you get a good deal from what you get from the box, please make a donation to the forum to help support this wonderful place.

If it was clear, it wouldn’t be a surprise.

Sounds like fun, how do we sign up?

I must have one of those curvy things :gimme:
This is an interesting idea. I have some items that are not smurf that I would be willing to put in the box in exchange for anything I take out.

I wonder how many will look at the picture and try to figure out what the curvy things are.
Great to have you. I think we all have things we’d be willing to exchange. Hopefully it gets interest and goes smooth, then maybe it could happen again.

I also have a couple of unsmurphy things I can add. :)

Good luck to all in the US

Really fun GAW! I'm in Europe so good luck you in the US
[It's not failure if you learn something from it]
-
I think it's an excellent idea. I don't want to put my name on the list but I would like to wish luck to those who enter. I did just get the 2021 Pay it Forward package which seems to be the same concept, and still have to send that on.
-
Outstanding idea :hatsoff: Will follow to see what the curvy stuff is! Have an idea of a couple so looking forward to see if I'm guessing right.
Good luck guys

Hopefully there will be some more people wanting to participate.

A bump to see if more interest.
If not, i’ll still send out a box to those interested.
-
I think this is great idea, just worried about how we keep the chain going.
-
Nice and generous GAW Sos!
Great idea a surprise GAW!
Good luck to all!

I know some have a long chain because it is one big box. Because I’m doing a small flat rate box, it would only be about 5+/- per box and each person would be responsible to mail to next. The small flat rate will make it easier to mail, because even if box is damaged and can’t be reused, they are usually available at the post office. You can even print off postage at home without a scale and just put in mailbox or give to mailman.

Wonderful idea Sherry :like:
This should be lots of fun for everyone participating !
-
Wow. I thought this might get a little more interest, but oh well.
Seeing that it has been a week a only a small interest, I will tailor the initial plan a little. For those who have already expressed interest ( includes pa_strunk if want), if you message me your address, I’ll send you each a surprise box with a few items for you.
If more people show interest I will still have enough to do as originally planned.

Another bump, just like to thank Sos24 to start this wonderful GAW, and those participating. Have fun! :tu:

Anybody else interested?
I really like the idea of a box of goodies that is sent around so that each recipient can take a few items but also gives a few items of comparable value.
-
Anybody else interested?
I am, if it's not too late to get in on the fun.
-
I received a package from Sos today, and it was quite generous. I can't post a picture of the contents at the moment, but I will tomorrow morning.
I just realized that I forgot to do something in my PM to Sos. So I will do it now:
Thank you very much !

I am waiting for directions from Sos on how to proceed from here

Great stuff, one I have been wanting for a while but haven't felt the need to pull the trigger and I think it is one of the swirls.

Got it, immediately I grabbed the Barlow. My grandad hooked me on these at a very young age. Your so awesome coming up with this idea. Just let me know who the next victim >:D I mean lucky recipient will be. I head out on short military TDY tomorrow in preparation for 9/11, but I can send it out the following weekend, unless something crazy happens.

Cool assortment! I'm really looking forward to getting it now. One item will definitely be passed along, and I have my eye on another. More than likely I will add more to the box as an incentive for others to join in.

This will be sent out next week.

I do appreciate a good pliers-based tool, and seeing what else is out there (thereby broadening my horizons) is always fun.

I just might!
The treatment given to Adam's photo makes it hard to say for sure, but it looks like there's at least one I'll pass along. If I'm right, that's simply because I've found a model from that maker that suits me very well.
I'll have to do some deep thinking about what I might contribute. Some of them may need some elbow grease, but rest assured: if I wouldn't be proud to own it, it will not be included in this pass-around.

Thanks to Adam for sending this to me, and Sos24 for starting the whole shebang!
Who's the next link in the chain?

I didn't join in this fun and generous GAW because I had recently received a knife that Sherry gave away during the traditional knife challenge and I had the Pay it Forward package of goodies from Grant that I still had to forward and I wanted other people to have a chance at it. The Pay it Forward package is now on its way to Surge in the UK and there's no reason they should be mutually exclusive. So, if it's still available and if nobody else is stepping forward to take part in the Surprise Box GAW I'd love to receive one of the boxes because this is too much fun to end so soon. The generosity of the members of this board is astonishing. We really have the best membership on the net.

I hadn't checked the tracking today. Normally it would have gone from the Opa Locka sorting facility directly to Miami International Airport and gone from there within a day or two. For some reason this one had to travel to New York first. :twak:
I hope it gets to you safely and without further delay.

TBH I'm getting used to this (especially from CONUS and USPS vs RM) ::)
I've had several parcels take the scenic route and one didn't even leave (nor was it returned to sender)
Prior experience would suggest another 10 "working" days (2 weeks) then, of course, import duty etc... :dwts:
I'll keep you updated via PM after this so as not to derail this excellent thread (well done Sherry :tu: :2tu: )

Oooh, I really hope it doesn't take a month for my package to get to Surge in the UK. I had included a couple of blocks of raw cookie dough that I wrapped in wire so they wouldn't bounce around in the package and I attached an electronic kitchen timer so Surge would know if they're still safe to eat when they get there. Surge, if the clock's still ticking the dough hasn't gone off yet. :tu:

Alan's box is on the way. Here's a little teaser of some of its contents. Some might be obvious, others less so.
-
:woohoo: I can't wait for it to get here.
-
Well, the Surprise Box arrived and I am honestly surprised. I'm surprised because it arrived sealed in a plastic bag, because the end of the box was open. I've asked Dan for a content list including what condition everything was in so I'll be able to see if there's any loss or damage. Will do the unboxing pics after I get that list from Dan. :bnghd:
-
A list of the contents has been sent to Alan. Hopefully everything is okay. Sometimes I'd like to give USPS a good :twak:
-
I'm very grateful to Dan and Sherry for sending out this box and the contents that were provided by them both. Everything in the box is in good shape and I'm absolutely stoked about my goodies. Unfortunately, a Spyderco Dragonfly doesn't seem to have made it so Dan's going to file a claim. I just hope some postal worker somewhere is enjoying their new Spyderco as much as I would have. Anyway, whoever wants some of this awesomeness next needs to PM their details and I should be able to get a box out Monday. Don't worry, I'll use a new box.
-
A claim has been filed. Fingers crossed that it doesn't take them ages to process it. Meanwhile, hope the next lucky recipient posts their intent to participate soon!
-
The outgoing box is already packed for the next recipient. I've kept some and added some and that's all I'll say.
-
That's too bad about the missing Spydie :(
I always tape both ends and the flap on those priority boxes just to be safe.
-
Yep I do the same. Too bad about the missing Spydie. I sure hope the claim processes with ease.
-
We shall see how that goes. Any funds I receive from the claim will go right back into the community.

I would have really liked the Spyderco since I don't have one, but everything else was spectacular! The generosity of this community is amazing. I've packed another box full to the scuppers with goodness and it is ready to send to the next lucky recipient. I'm just waiting for someone to step forward and claim it.
-
No word from USPS yet, but will implement all suggestions in the future.

The fact that there are so many outside the US, os a downside, but I would have expected so more interest.
I know the pay-it-forward box is similar and has arrived in UK. Maybe, I need to see what I have left in items and check some interest to start some for you MTOers down under.

We have an update on the insurance claim. In the mail today was a letter from USPS stating that they approved my claim up to a point. I'd asked for $60, but they approved me for the "free" insurance amount of $50. As I don't feel that money is for me to use to further line my coffers, I'll be doing a giveaway in the near future.

I would suggest it be a donation to the forum, which can always use it.
-
That's an altogether better idea. No worries about logistics and what to give away, and all users will benefit. Donation to the forum it shall be!
-
You folks are not going to believe what just showed up here without ever a mention or the slightest inkling of a clue that it was coming. I am completely overwhelmed! I had told Dan that the missing knife wasn't his doing and I didn't expect him to replace it, and Sherry just took it upon herself to send out another Dragonfly which I assume is out of her own collection. I figured if the post office made good on the claim then we could consider our options, and a donation to the forum seemed like the best thing for everybody. I never expected this more than generous GAW within an already incredibly generous GAW. Thank you Sherry you are awesome! I've been given cause to say this many, many times before, but it feels like I need to say it again; MTO is the greatest community on the webs and I'd like to thank every one of you for making it so. Now, about this box that's been ready to ship for the last couple of weeks. Somebody has to want this, and soon, because it's getting in my way.
-
Excellent! The forum will see a donation from me soon!
-
Send it my way PM incoming. :D

Awesome. We wore you down. Although, you do realize there are two boxes and pa_strunk has been waiting for a destination.

I’m glad it got there.
The funny thing is that this Dragonfly was only in my possession for a very short time. It was a gift to me from Barry Rowland as a thank you for something else. When I saw that the one in the box came up missing and you would have wanted it, I decided to forward it on.
-
:ahhh Do I take that too? OMG then I'll have both and then what?
-
What a wonderful gesture. The Dragonfly is a really nice knife. I was lucky to get one from our very own Nix. Its one that I don't talk about enough but I carry it A LOT. I like to clip it to my shirt pocket and forget about it till I need it.
-
The Dragonfly is a superb design and what another wonderful act of generosity Sos :hatsoff:
Aloha, you know you want to do both boxes, then you can decide whether to keep them separate, or merge them into a megabox :ahhh :pok:

Maybe Aloha should get both boxes if willing. See how the demand doesn’t seem to be high, we could merge them. Not knowing what all is in both now, the contents may still fit in one flat rate box.

Funny you said that because I have the dragonfly clipped to my shirt pocket too and it's so light I don't even know it's there. I have your address and I'll get the package out on Monday. I couldn't fit everything in a small flat rate box though, so I've packed it in a slightly larger box. There's some new in the package stuff that I couldn't get into a small flat rate box without removing from the original packaging and I hated to have to do that.

I think that Sherry's original plan was that the box might gradually become lighter as it made its way around, not grow larger.

You are truly one of the members that make this a great place. Not only for the multiple packages you sent out, but also sending Alan the second Dragonfly.

By the way this is great and quite speedy of them.

You are correct, but obviously box recipients weren’t interested in just receiving a gift, but giving themselves.
-
That was awesome of Sherry to send out another Dragonfly, especially since a lot of y'all seem to be fond of it. (The Delica is my Spydie of choice.)
I forgot to mention that the check showed up yesterday.

Knowing MToers, everyone will replace any item they take with two others.
Pretty soon, the small flat rate box will look like this:

And the large flat rate box will be a rail car full of 'em!
More seriously, I am glad to see the chain has kept moving along. I'm really curious as to what Alan kept, too.

Thank you. MEGA BOX........... Stand by all.

I'll have to get mine out for you tomorrow. They wanted $24.95 to ship in a plain brown box what would have fit in a $16.95 flat rate box, so I grabbed a flat rate box and went home to repack everything. I may be paranoid now, but I taped the smurf out of it. That box isn't going to open until it is safely home with Aloha. :twak:
-
:salute:. Thats the way to do it. I would always pink duct tape the ever living heck out of packages I sent. I swear I paid more since I added so much tape .

I have received both boxes. I won't be posting pics but I will tell you you are sorry you didn't receive one of these boxes.
Before we move along let me confer with Sos. I have enough items for 3 possible 4 boxes :woohoo:.
Seriously you need to get in on this.

You're next Steve :pok:

If you are someone who likes to try stuff. Its a great deal. The odds and ends are worth the trip to the post office and shipping.

Alright DO NOT MISS OUT. You already missed out on one fabulous mega box all on its own. I will be sending it down under to our fine members.
I will send out the smaller but no less exciting box to the next participant.
Come on don't be shy. There is something in there for you. I didn't think there would be for me and I passed on this wonderful GAW initially. The shipping for a flat rate box is $9, well a little less. I'm sure whatever you take out you couldn't get it for $9 let alone less than that ;).
When I received the box from pa, I was so stoked I had to take a day to decide what I'd keep. Yeah I did keep something/s. It was much to awesome to pass on. I almost kept several things BUT I know one of you would want it/them more :pok:. I added a few fun goodies for you to try. Maybe you were looking for a simple EDC cutting tool? Maybe a pry tool? Maybe you wanted a powerful light? Maybe you wanted a plier to take to work or for around the house? Maybe you needed a keychain tool? Seriously there has got to be something you want and for $9 how can you go wrong? :pok:. Maybe you wanted to give your son/daughter or friend their first tool? These are useful items and they are ready for new owners. This is not junk that is broke or damaged. This is ready to use and ready for adventures.
I wanted to add so much myself but in an effort to keep the box at its smallest size I didn't. So who is next?
Pick up a flat rate box ( the same size you'll receive ) pack it and take it to the PO and pay one fee. You'll get automatic $50 insurance and thats that. Or you can do everything online. You can order the flat rate box, pay for shipping and give the box to your mail person. Seriously it cannot be easier. You don't have to leave your home. The shipping for a flat rate box is $9, well a little less $8.95 ( I think? ). I'm sure whatever you take out you couldn't get it for less than that. I'm also pretty sure there is something you've been wanting to pass along to someone and just haven't.
Remember you don't have to add anything and you certainly don't want to make the box a MEGA box either, I wont say names .
Sos has her rules on page one so read them. Its pretty straight forward. Accept the package ( FREE ). Take something of interest ( FREE ). Do everything online ( FREE ) except pay for shipping to next participant. How fun is this?
-
As said earlier I wont post pictures not even blurred ones. If you want to know whats in the box you have to tell me you want it. I will send it out promptly and give you a tracking number. You can wait excitedly unlike me. I wasn't thinking I was going to keep anything. HAHA  :gimme:. So much goodness. Little doodads and trinkets that were perfect for....... Nope not telling you.
The box has some fun things. I promise you I had to restrain myself from taking several items.
So I ask again........... Who's next?

After a little break I am back to :pok: the next to want this terrific GAW.
Even if theres nothing in the box you want there has to be something you'd love to give to a family or friend :dunno:.

I still don't understand why these boxes don't have more traction, the pay it forwards box has stalled too :dunno:

I don't know :dunno:.
I didn't think it would be this hard since the forum GAWs have so many involved. Maybe they don't like surprises?

It's a strange one. I'm going to give the PiF box another plug at the end of the week once I've got work stuff out of the way, but then?.. I dunno. :dunno:

Well, I enter GAWs mainly because I like the thrill of the game. I don't care much about winning, I just like to see a long list of entries . It makes the winner feel even better when the chances are smaller.
