Title: Gas bottle BBQ
Post by: Sparky415 on September 26, 2015, 12:38:30 PM

So I wanted to make a BBQ small enough to take car camping, no holes in the bottom to protect the grass
I was going to wait before posting so I could show it in action, but time  ::)  ...

Dumped Gas bottle and a charity shop fruit bowl

(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/Fire/DSC03180%20b.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/Fire/DSC03180%20b.jpg.html)

Need some sort of jig to do a level cut

(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/Fire/DSC03285.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/Fire/DSC03285.jpg.html)

(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/Fire/DSC03286.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/Fire/DSC03286.jpg.html)

Yep that works

(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/Fire/DSC03291.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/Fire/DSC03291.jpg.html)

(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/Fire/DSC03293.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/Fire/DSC03293.jpg.html)

Cut some bits off the bottom

(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/Fire/DSC03298.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/Fire/DSC03298.jpg.html)

Give him a smile  :-\

(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/Fire/DSC03299.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/Fire/DSC03299.jpg.html)

Chop up the fruit bowl

(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/Fire/DSC03303.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/Fire/DSC03303.jpg.html)

Added cake rack (might need more work    )

(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/Fire/DSC03585.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/Fire/DSC03585.jpg.html)

Just need to test it now, probably not much good for backpacking  :D

Thanks Guys  :salute:
I am hoping it will ‘draw’ when there’s a fire or I will have to drill a few extra holes

I’m sure Smashie and Mr W are reaching for their disc cutters as we speak

Oh wow what a great shape!
As long as the fruit bowl is up high enough you should get enough air flow down there. I only use charcoal. Yum.

Not sure if it will get used this year but we will see....

Mmmmm steak

Megan there’s ¾” under the bowl, I’m hoping it will be enough  :)

I actually tried it and it worked. It would have been better if I had pressed them...they were a bit crumbly. I found people using small presses improvised with caulk guns and PVC tubing.

Z
You probably know that you have to fill the bottles with water first to get the gas out  :ahhh

And if you don’t have a disc cutter a jig saw will work as well
I used metal hole cutters and a jigsaw for the smile

For Smashie,
who for some reason   is reluctant to hack up a pressurized calor gas bottle with a disc cutter...

Balloon gas bottle (Helium  ;) )

1st Cut

Pop rivet on an old hinge

Cut holes in top, make cunning cheese knife door catch  :D

Didn’t draw well so make holes in top bigger and add vent below door

Works a bit better, takes ten minutes to boil 1 pint of water

Anti to remove. Now to decide on a simple design. Or two...

Anti to remove. Now to decide on a simple design. Or two...

It is only the line side of the tap that is anti clock to tighten on gas, so non gas things can't be connected.

And two is better than one  :pok:

Hmm, as expected, they don't sell scrap to the public, and as I don't actually know anyone who works there, I don't have an inside contact. Oh well, will just have to keep an eye out elsewhere...

They are made out of 9kg gas bottles (the same as the others are using).
Someone asked the manufacturer if they can make sea mine ones on the Facebook page where I saw these. I think he said "sure, if you can find a sea mine".

The Mine with Porthole door is pretty sweet. Quite a visual conversation piece for a home too!

A friend bought along a gas bottle that had been on a fire  :dwts:  and asked if I could make him a BBQ
Here it is after some work

Looks like this now with an easy carry handle  ;)

Opens level so you have a wider working area

Looks like that will work
