Title: SI Owners Club
Post by: magentus on November 25, 2016, 03:53:21 PM
Can't believe there isn't one already, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

The SI has always been a part of my rotation (every Wednesday for the past few years for some strange reason  )but it wasn't until I EDC'd it for a full month during Hiraethus' excellent Minimalist Challenge that I really appreciated this beautifully simple and robust knife. From the sturdy and well designed and proportioned  tools (in-line awl  :salute: ) to the inclusion of the hollow rivet (allowing a simple solution to those who want a lanyard and those who don't), all wrapped in those magnificent alox scales.

It has now become one of my absolute favourite stock SAK's.

If you feel like me and own and appreciate the SI (even the name is great!) join the club!

SI, We salute you!

I'm in. Usually no scissors is a deal breaker for me. It's the main reason I could never get on with my pioneer and cadet. The SI is different though. Can't explain it. Technically mine is a Swiss Army 70 though.  :)

Very long time SI user here. Got my first one twenty years ago, and used the heck out of it for 10 years before it was stollen. The replacement is a 2004 model and is my dirty work go-to knife if I think the tinker may be too nice to mess up. The SI just shrugs off whatever is thrown at it.

Awesome SAK and pics everyone... :like:

I've always thought of SI being referred to the civilian version of the Soldat... But SAKWiki, says otherwise... which has me now confused... It would be a civilian version if it had a bail?

Only have one in my possession and doesn't have a hollow-rivet and bail... hopefully some day...

There's a good chance it's issue if it's bail-less. (yeah I don't know if that's a word either)

I have two Standard Issues, an 04 buried in my knife box, and a more recent, unmarked one, which lives in my tool bag. The bail on the new one is floppy; anyone else suffer this malady, or recommend a quick fix?

I made one out of a brass rod (that was meant to become 84mm SAK pins...) as a proof of concept:

I'm curious about this also. I only have one and nothing to compare it to. Are they suppose to be "floppy"?

The bail on both of the SI's I had were both sloppy and flopped around a bit. Since I attach a lanyard, it's no biggie, plus I started out in life with a boy scout knife, so I'm use to it. It's just part of the knife's character.

Thanks for the response. I attached a lanyard to mine also. I think I prefer it to flop around anyway.

My 04 is pretty tight. The only issue I have with it is if I get complacent, and accidentally close the blade on the bail.

This is what I've been afraid of doing since I got mine. Guessing this is the reason you don't see a bail on traditional folders as much anymore.

If I'm honest, I don't care all that much about the SAK. It's a knife to be used. I've had the new one about a week, and came with a wee chip out of the blade, toward the point, about half a centimeter from where it would contact the bail IF it closed on it. It was brand new in box, so no idea how it happened. Heck, my favorite Recruit is one that I bunged up with my knife box, which is a .50 cal ammo box that sits in the garage. The keyring nub got caught between the box and the lid, and I forced it down with quite a bit of force. This caused the liner to deform a little, and the little blade started rubbing, or wouldn't close all the way, or something. It's been a while, so my memory is a little hazy. Anyhoo, I bent it back, I think with a hammer and something acting like a striker. The blade is still off center, and there's a burr on the keyring nub, but it's what I use when I don't give a rat's patoot about a knife.

tl;dr - I'm going to use it whether it's pretty or not.

Thank you  :D
I used angled shape to make the brass stiffer by fritting  (based the design on cellidor bails)

Pros: brass is soft, so the bail shouldn't break the blade if it closes on it...

Cons: brass is soft, too much pull force / torque will distort the bail our pop it out.

Potential workaround: using spring wire forced into the right diameter of brass tubing to get both soft outer material and stiffer overall piece?

Well after a bit of encouragement from here, I decided to go with some brass rod that fit in the knife that I bought the other day along with the (hopefully) correct diameter of pin stock for my mod :tu: Took just a couple minutes and I may make another one now since I know the correct length and hopefully the next time I don't scar the brass with my pliers  :D

Is that the Vic belt hanger?: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Victorinox-41853-Leather-Belt-Hanger/dp/B0001P156C/

Is it long enough so that you can dangle an SI in your pocket? Does the round ring attach to a belt loop?

Does anyone else put an extra split ring between the bail and Tec P7 clip to ensure the SAK lies flat against the leg in the pocket, or do you find it's not really needed?:

Check out some of the paracord 'how to's' on the Youtubes OG - it's surprising how straightforward some of the simpler knots are.

Here's my new, spare '97 next to her '04 little sister. I like the smoother scales on the '97. The shield is lighter too. Hat's doffed to Sabazi for the deal:

Just looked and my local Walmart carries many colors of Paracord, 18 ft for $1.97!

I'm sorry for the delayed response Oxford Guy.  It is a Vic lanyard.  It's not quite long enough to reach my back pocket so I attach the ring to a carabiner that is hooked to my belt loop.  It's a little awkward but I make it work!

Great pics everyone!  I love Wenger to begin with, and there's just something about this knife that makes it really special.

Love it!   Haven't really got to use it much, but the look and feel of it... Well, I quickly bought a Victorinox Pioneer in black for cheap off eBay. It will get sent to Syph007 for some custom work eventually. As for the Wenger, I do not want to tear it apart. It's perfect as is!

I carried it in a sheath on my belt last night, but I didn't like that. I'm gonna hit Walmart for some Paracord and teach myself the art of the lanyard. I want to feel that Wenger in my pocket!!

Dare I tell that I sold a '68 some time ago?  :dwts:

Man, I thought I'd be many pics in by now but I can't bring myself to take either of them out of the box  :ahhh....   I know it's not a know it's not quite the same but I've really been enjoying carrying the Pioneer.
You'll never know what you're missing! Pioneer has nothing on the SI.
It's the bail, I tell ya!  Makes the SI a whole new ball game!!

First impressions... I much prefer the bail to the key ring.  Just sits better in the pocket just seems like a smoother design overall.

Yeah, the opening and closing is more fluid for me also. Are you gonna put it back in its box?

I considered it but I don't think so...  I decided to get a backup pioneer and a backup SI to keep new in the box, and one of each for the EDC rotation.

You're right, I need to face the cold hard truth.  Next I have to get a red Soldier I've determined and an older Soldat. I have, however started cleaning up the collection and selling the ones that I don't love.  So that brings some glimmer of hope of being not completely out of control.  :ahhh

2nd day carrying my SI and I REALLY like it.  Only issue is the awl doesn't have much snap at AWL!   I cleaned and oiled the already brand-new knife and it didn't help! Not sure what's the issue...  maybe just needs to time to loosen up?  Should I soak it in oil?

Not sure why no snap El-C - perhaps oil is the answer. Let us know.

Nice set up J-Man. Does the Topeak have the in-line driver as well as the ratchet? If so- that is a nice tool. It's what I like about the Sealey, but the Topeak seems to be finished a little nicer. Twice as expensive though, although not nearly as expensive as the Vic ratchet

Yes it does...... same as vics... the only difference being a direction toggle switch to tighten or loosen... With vic's you would have to reverse the ratchet.

Mags, quick off topic question again.  I see your adjustable wrench tucked under about 2 inches of something, is that a wide rubber band?  Sorry to be all in your business, but that looks interesting to me.  Seems it isn't tape.  I see it on your kydex sheath as well.

You should come over! - I live just outside Bath City centre - amazing countryside and a city full of Georgian and Roman history - even the allotment we have was built on a Roman Villa, which was built on an Iron age settlement , which was built on a Bronze age settlement. Sacrilege!!!!!!    :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

Is it really???

I feel myself compelled to commit some kind of great sacrilege soon but I think one is more accepted  than the other.

I either want to remove the bail from the SI or file the key chain Off of the Pioneer or both. I bought 2 of each of these new one to keep in the box and one to sport EDC style...  I feel there more replaceable and I feel less cautious carrying them.

Thing is I really just want to EDC. The 89 soldier I have but I would just. Feel terrible if I lost it and I don't really want to mess up the tools on it.

I probably won't be happy until I have another 89 soldier new in the box.hahahaha

anyway don't mean to Ramble, too much. I was just seeing what you guys thought about removing the bail. Honestly, I don't have a lot of beef with the bail. I find it actually to be kind of a cool feature.  I just like a little bit more smooth feeling in the pocket and then my hand that the soldiers offer than the SI or Pioneer w/kr.

Thoughts?

That is an awlsome combo.  :tu:

Removing the bail from my last-gen SI has sent me spiraling out of control into a bailless alternate dimension of SAK ownership.  I KNEW I was getting a solid rivet '94 but I THOUGHT I was getting an '01 Soldier, turned out to be a SI which someone, somewhat ungracefully, removed the bail from.

Here's the thing... on my new SI  AND this '01 BOTH have tiny nicks in the blade where the blade has accidentally shut on the bail.    That's another mark against the blasted bail.  The knife feels a LOT better without it IMO.

So here I am, bailless and shameless... I hope you guys still let me be in the club.   ::)

It's a tolerant club here El-C. One of the things I like about the SI is that the hollow rivet makes it an inclusive SAK. You can choose whether to have a bail, or a piece of twine through the hole, or nothing at all. OR if you're a pirate captain you could weave SI's into oyur beard and hair to look more fearsome!

The blade catching the bail is something I don't understand. How difficult is it to make sure the bail is out of the way of the blade? It's prolly the same people who regularly close the blade on a finger who do it.

Those are some sweet SI's you have there

1st Watch Tuesday morning SI Appreciation Society meeting. Mini-Mags has brought in a Cellidor model of some kind that has no place in the TmSIAS. No wonder Smallbacca is so mad!

Thanks Mags!

I guess I'm too used to closing my cellidor saks, using the MacGyver/Magic Johnson method of the no-look closer.   The bail on the new SI was super loose, unlike the bail on old Celli SAKs which usually don't have play.  If you're right handed and doing a two-handed close with your palms, I think it's actually pretty easy to happen.

I do think the bail looks classy though, and perhaps if I had a better track record of keeping things in excellent condition I would have kept the bail.   I must admit I'm partial to the '94 Solid though, I think mostly because it's pretty worn and really smooth-feeling.

P.S. I have DEFINITELY closed AWL the back layer tools on the KR many times.  :D

No idea of the precise date -yet- as it is not stamped on the tang...
- it has the Red 'Swiss Army 70' Wenger cardboard box
- features the more recent 'fine' pattern on the scales compared to older Pioneers/Soldiers/SI
- the secondary tools are recent (polished and thinner ones, flat screw driver with notch)
- center pin is silverish while the blade pivot is more goldish, so is the spacer

Sadly I can't compare it with my 91' Si for now (or Victorinox Red 70's Pioneer, KL89, 03' soldier)

After reading those threads I am coming down on the side of the mold theory. That is that they are markings indicating which molds create which parts.

The only thing which I don't get is why they are only on one scale, you would think they would be on both.  :ahhh

Unless perhaps they were deeper on one scale and what we see is what remains after being milled off. In all honesty I am not sure how they actually manufacture the scales but I would assume a mold, a press then some kind of milling.   ???
Anyone know for sure?

Got my SIs and Soldiers back under the hand,

Victorinox KL89 has a 89 scribed inside,
Wenger SI '91 has nothing
Victorinox Soldier '03 has nothing either
Wenger Swiss Army 70 from 2008-2012? has the 4 parallel strikes + 5th angled one

My two Wenger 10 70 01 have the same pattern inside :
the IIII striked appears to be fairly identical
And I also noticed that on the other scale they also have a kind of snake shaped mark (could only take the pic for one)

Considering they are from the same dealer and the above markings, I suppose they are from the same manufacturing batch and that the identical markings would indicate that they are on the mold.

But all this still doesn't give us an answer about 'why'

Seriously though - what's not to love about the hollow rivet? Those who like a lanyard can have a lanyard, and those who don't can remove the bail and toss it in the bin/at their enemy/through their nose, whatever!

I believe the bail is only provided on the issue SI's so it can be used as an angle indicator for firing mortars (or maybe I dreamed that). Also, I think there are some Vic Soldiers with bails - hopefully someone more knowledgable than me will verify/disregard that.

'Bailgate' can easily be solved with just a little forethought before closing your SI - you should always be concentrating when using a knife anyway so there's no excuse you hear me? NO EXCUSE! Young scallywags.

"Bailgate" hahaha ... pretty close to  "Bill Gates"

Sometimes that forethought may be better spent on focusing on the task at hand and not having to make special accommodations for a frivolous addition to the otherwise awesome knife.  :o  :pok:  :D

Also, I think there are some Vic Soldiers with bails - hopefully someone more knowledgable than me will verify/disregard that.[/b][/u][/i]
[/color]
'Bailgate' can easily be solved with just a little forethought before closing your SI - you should always be concentrating when using a knife anyway so there's no excuse you hear me? NO EXCUSE! Young scallywags.

"Bailgate" hahaha ... pretty close to  "Bill Gates"

Sometimes that forethought may be better spent on focusing on the task at hand and not having to make special accommodations for a frivolous addition to the otherwise awesome knife.  :o  :pok:  :D

Someone please show me this white stag that Mag's is referring to.  Please.

Here you go bud - https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,40570.msg649347.html#msg649347

Please note that for your convenience and blood pressure, these Vics are not supplied with bails.  :D

Thanks... I got it second hand with the bail attached... This is my only Soldier with bail.  So I wouldn't know if the bail is authentic... Bail material is polished and has equal bends on all sides... this indicates that a machine did this...

Yep. Nail on the head :salute: Jam has all the goodness and bits of fruit whereas jelly is strained where you are left with just the juice :tu:

And Mags second pic of jelly is what I would call Jell-O or gelatin :tu:

We have been squishing and drowning them in a bucket. The Apple and Pear trees are getting chewed. Out in Saskatchewan it is at plague level. There is a bacteria available that you can spray on the leaves. The Caterpillars eat it and it causes them to starve themselves.

For slugs I use Diatomaceous Earth. Pour it around the perimeter as if it is broken glass.

Jam is fruit, sugar and pectin.
Jelly is juiced fruit, sugar, pectin and gellatin.

Not sure why auto correct changed gellatin to fellation.

On what front, dear Sir magentus of MTO?   :D

I can't remember a rainiest (is that a word?) month of June, now tempeture is rising to abnormal levels, all of which, alas, contributes to my remaining stranded with a touch screen for another good while until home repairs are over... :(

Ribena... other than the odd orange juice or home made lemonade, I don't drink juice in general, canned ones even less. Add to that I am not fond of most berries, then you see why I didn't like Ribena.

Fruits preserves, on the other hand, I love greatly. Bilberry, strawberry, orange, bergamot, strawberry tree (arbutus unedo), peach are my favourite ones in order of preference

I trust you'll be playing Jammin' by Bob Marley in a buckle while making jam and and I hope it turns out delicious

Gravy :dd:  :D I use either oil or what cooks out of the breakfast meat I have been frying and bacon grease  2 big spoonfuls of flour and brown that in a skillet, turn the heat up and add milk (all the while constantly stirring) It then makes ir it doesn't :D Then I smother biscuits, fried taters and whatever meat I made with it and sometimes fried eggs  Not a meal we have a lot of or I would have to be rolled around places

RoSchrö is just messing, it only means Swiss Instigator.

No it does not!  :twak:

I have seen this before, it was in that SAKMC thread. Someone asked what it stood for and everyone gave them bullsmurf answers. I'm on to you guys!

Hah! The SAKWiki shall end your silly little game! I looked it up and it does stand for Standard Issue. (http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Wenger+Soldat+1961+-+Standard+Issue)

Well played.  :duel:

...I was kinda hoping it would be Seven Inches.  ;)

You broke a bail!  :ahhh That deserves a badge of some kind  :D

I have tried with our local Vic dealers to source some spare bails but they didn't even know what one was until I explained it to them, and then they just sent me out some generic lanyards.

I believe they can be made with 'spring' steel whatever that is. If anyone wants a go at trying to make them I'm sure there's quite a few of us that'd like at least a couple.

Nope, it's a totally ordinary Standard Issue.  I don't know if all SI's were made like this, but mine has its year-of-issue (89) stamped on the tang.

Yes, I believe up until 08 (or 07 for Wenger Maybe), after that they kept making them for a few years with no year stamp.

I've got a '88 nib myself. It's cool that it still has the plate for the waffen kontrol stamp, they stopped stamping them in 88 and eventually lost the little plate

Round about page 10 or 11 or so of this thread there was a discussion of the little tally mark looking scratches inside the scales. I've seen these before on victorinox alox scales, but never knew they were on the Wenger SI.

It makes me wonder if maybe vic made the scales for Wenger?  I know I've read somewhere that it's very likely Wenger sourced the can opener from vic. Maybe the scales too.

Might also explain why the SI is the only Wenger I've ever got along with. Maybe it's mostly a victorinox :D

Given government contracts, it wouldn't surprise me at all.  I know the back springs on the SI are a completely different animals strength wise from the other Wengers of the same time frame.

Sad day....

Sometime between the end of my shift at work Friday (2am) and now, my beloved Wenger SI has disappeared.

I could have sworn I put it in my lunch box as I was leaving work, as I ALWAYS do.   It had been in my front right pants pocket all night.

I usually put it in the front pocket of my lunch box, next to my Pioneer X and Victorinox sharpener, when I leave work or when I get home.

I went looking for it today, nowhere to be found. I have looked in car and truck. Looked all over kitchen and front room. Anywhere I might have set it down. It’s just.....gone.....

I’m devastated. That was my favorite SAK.

My Pioneer X will have to resume the daily carry role now.  I just can’t believe I lost it??!!!!!

RIP little guy...

man, I am sorry!  :P

Does anyone other than you have access to your lunch box?  ??? Maybe you can put a "Notice of Disappearance" at work if anyone finds it?
Hopefully, as usually happens with these, it will appear on a corner or unexpected place sooner or later.  :tu:

Good luck!

I had it in my pocket at end of shift. I usually stick it in lunchbox when leaving or when I get home so no one took it.

Just not sure where it went.

It's most likely stuck between the backrest and cushion on your car/truck.
Do you carry it on the right or left pocket?
I find that the small gap between the seat and middle console can be a black hole of sorts...
Good luck in finding it!!

Just went all thru the car. Stuck hands in ever place I could think of. Never had one just fall out of my pocket before.

I can’t figure out what I did with it. Maybe it will turn up someday....

Question from "another barrel" as it is in Poland. What do you clean yours Sl? I have a few but terrible dirty, I know that it is best in an ultrasonic cleaner but I do not have one present, and somewhere I read that you can use a dishwashing liquid, or even put it in the dishwasher, later you know oils, cloths and a lot of love.

I’ve been told NO on the dishwasher as some of the chemicals will harm it.

Best for me has been really hot water with mild dish soap and use old toothbrush. Clean and rinse really well and dry out. Compressed air (in a can if you don’t have a compressor...) to get all water out.

Let dry a few hours then oil and work tools and oil and wipe down.

Every time I see a new post here, I want to start carrying my SI again!!!

I carry my Pioneer X nowadays because I get a lot of use from the scissors. However, I really miss the simplicity and lightness of my SI.

Think I’ll dig it out today and put the PX away. I can toss my Ambassador back onto my keychain for any scissor needs.
