Title: Am I the only one that prefers uncolored alox?
Post by: GoatDragon on July 14, 2017, 10:07:56 PM
I own three Cadets, and they are all beautiful. I own many other SAKs, but the Cadet is my favorite (and nearly all i carry these days).

Yet despite the obvious beauty of colored alox (http://imgur.com/a/YGxPR), I find that I prefer to carry the plain uncolored one.

It isn't that I don't find the colored alox attractive, because I do. And it isn't that I am afraid to wear down the colored coating, I have seen enough of your guy's pictures of sexy worn down colored alox that it almost makes me want to carry those more.

But every day I find that I reach for the plan, uncolored one to ride in my pocket. There is something about the simplicity of its splendor that I can't quite put my finger on. It looks like a no-nonsense tool, while comparatively the colors look a little bit like toys (beautiful beautiful toys). Perhaps I just like the classic look of the red shield on the plain metal, after all I tend to prefer red celidor to colored as well. I might just be a traditionalist.

I am curious to know if anyone else here feels the same way. So many of the pictures you guys post here show off your stunning colorful SAKs, and I have to admit they are more photogenic than their uncolored siblings (especially when worn down). But when it comes down to what you prefer to carry, and what you prefer to use every day, do you prefer colored or plain, and why?

If it makes you feel any better, I'm one of the few people round here who doesn't like the pocket size alox knives at all. There's something about the texturing that just feels horrible. I don't mind it on the 58mm line (and have a plain coloured alox Rambler on a neck lanyard right now) but cannot abide the 84/93mm lines

I've been looking at a green Carver, but I bought the silver one.
I've been looking at a blue PX, but I bought the silver one.

Plain truth is the color adds to the price but not to the functionality.

Guess I'm not a "real" collector even though I have some Bugnard gold aloxes which I got dirt cheap, an OC Settler in red, and an orange Classic.

The knife that has been with me for over 10 years now is a silver Solo. It shows the wear if you look closely, but it's hard to show in photographs.

I LOVE the texture of alox SAKs, especially the larger ones. I often find myself pulling my Cadet out of my pocket just to fondle it.   :D

A fine decision when it comes to purchasing a new SAK, but it doesn't account for any preference between SAKs you already own.

True. Which one did you buy first?

I got the uncolored one first, followed shortly by the 2015 blue special edition. Then sometime later I got the red one.

I got the plain one first for the same reason you listed above. It was cheaper and the colors didn't add any functionality. Then I loved it so much I got a couple colored versions anyway, but found after a while that I preferred the plain one anyway!

Perhaps getting the plain one first partly accounts for my preference for it.

I have a Red Ribbed Cadet 2 that sees some carry time.  I also carried a OC Red Farmer tho it was more because it was the only farmer I had at the time.

To answer your question tho, I'd prefer non colored since the price for colored is higher.  All things being equal, I'd prefer color.

Funny thing is, I've been carrying the PX and the Carver from the day they arrived, but I could not put aside my Solo. Maybe it's like a mother's love for her firstborn.

I'm in the process of moving on my silver alox, ( and probably red celidor stuff too). Still on the fence with my 74 Wenger.
For what ever reason I can't explain, I just don't like the standard/default.
Pretty much have this years olive pioneer on me all the time at the moment.

As I had expected, it seems you guys generally prefer colored alox.

Your not alone, but maybe not in the majority either.

Here's a poll and recent conversation https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,68895.msg1363819.html#msg1363819

That pole is much more interesting data than I was getting from the way I asked my question. Thank you! :tu: It seems silver scales are solidly tied for second behind red. (Yes orange has one more vote than silver, but it's close. Edit: I forgot I got a vote as well, now they are tied!  :D)

I really like all colors of Alox, but the plain silver is (to me) what makes Alox unique. The colors are striking so I wouldn't "kick any of them out of bed for eating crackers."

No you are not. I myself prefer the silver above all other colours.

While i'm firmly on the Cellidor camp for main Sak general purpose EDC needs, i love alox ones too.
But despite liking all the alox colors (when new) around my preferd is the plain silver.
Maybe i'm the opposite of most here, but i really don't find faded and scratched colored a color alox "sexy", far from it, i honestly don´t like the look. New are beautifull, but worn colored ones not really my thing.
For vintage guitars, especially Strat's, worn and faded yes but not for Sak's...  :ahhh

Silver look good worn because the color doesn't fade, it's plain metal color. My favoutite one is the old silver plain cross, pure military look, simple, professional, no frills  :salute:

That's why I prefer carrying Soldiers...  I've decided to get rid of my reg silver Pioneers and go strictly red OC for that model... I enjoy the patina and think it looks less like a toy.  I have some nice, new looking colored alox that never gets carried. ... maybe one day.

I do like the silver most.
Black is second.
Others are beautiful too.

Silver is just for gentlemen.

That checks out.

I'm very partial to black cellidor.
