Title: Gas Station MRE II -- second helpings...
Post by: Nix on March 15, 2022, 08:11:44 PM
The return of the Gas Station Meal-Ready-to-Eat (GSMRE) challenge is here!  :tu:

The first GSMRE challenge last year was great fun (for me anyway) and stimulated some great discussion and ideas for quick and easy meals. Because the Soldier On! challenge (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,87754.0.html) is also running currently, this seemed like a great time to get another GSMRE going.

GSMRE challenge concept:

The legendary…sometimes loathed…military MRE. Call it a ‘meal ready to eat’, ‘mostly repugnant edibles’, ‘meal refuses to exit’, ‘meal rejected by enemy’, or a ‘meal rarely enjoyed.’  No matter the name, the MRE has a durable place in legend and lore. The only thing more durable than the MRE’s notoriety may be the MRE’s themselves. The shelf life of a US MRE was designed to be 5 years, but many are eaten decades later. Who knows how long these things really last......?  :dunno:

Recent versions of the MRE often looks like they were compiled from snacks picked up at the local gas station…and that’s where the idea for the GSMRE challenge was born.

In this repeat challenge, participants….we euphemistically call them ‘diners’…are going to take the idea of the MRE—an assortment of shelf-stable foods crammed into a small, man-portable package—and develop their own ‘Gas Station MRE’ version from items readily found shops, stores, gas stations, or online. A ‘GSMRE’.

Each diner will create a 24-hour ration according to his or her dietary preferences. Post a snapshot of the completed GSMRE by 16 April 22 to show it is completed. We’ll leave the GSMRE on the shelf for a week, then all consume our ‘rats’ on the same day, Saturday, 23 April 22.

I’m hoping this challenge will again spark some ideas for food and fuel to take on hikes, camping trips, or that escape to the hills when the zombie apocalypse arrives. The last GSMRE challenge saw some great meal ideas! If nothing else, it should be fun…and filling.

Unfamiliar with MRE’s?

Don’t worry, there are many resources out there. Complete menu lists are available on-line and videos abound on the Youtube.  A a starting point, here’s a link to a review by YouTube legend Steve1989 of a Ukrainian 24-hour ration:

Steve1989MREInfo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID_eFoIemjU)

To keep the challenge somewhat uniform (no pun intended), there are some DO’s and DON’T’s to be observed:

• DO use common sense and safe food handling practices while participating in this challenge. Food borne illness can cause serious illness and even death. If something doesn’t seem safe, DON’T eat it….don’t even touch it! Rule of thumb: if you can’t peel it, cook it.

• This is a 24 hour ‘mission’, so please DO assemble a 24-hour ration in the style of a military ration or MRE. Please DO post the contents and menu design for your ration. Post a photo of the contents on 16 April, 2022.

• DO be sure the food in your GSMRE contains a minimum caloric value of 2400 Kcal (There is solid military reasoning behind this number). 3000 - 3700 Kcal is closer to the US military standard for calories in temperate climates.

• While 2400 Kcal is our minimum to pack, DO add extra calories if you like—if you will be working or camping outside in a cold weather environment, you may wish to assemble a ration of 4000-5000 Kcal. Antarctic trekkers aim for 7000 Kcal per day.

• Diners DON’T have to eat the entire ration as assembled. Military personnel typically eat only 75-80% of their rations. This can be a problem for sustained operations! Eat what you like, and tell us why you did or didn’t eat some components

• DO make your ration tasty and appealing. One of the challenges of military ration designers is get troops to eat all their food. Hint: hot sauce is your friend.

• DO create a breakfast menu, midday meal/snack menu, and supper menu from what ever items you like. Additional snacks are permitted…even encouraged. You can use 2400 Kcal of snickers bars if you really want, but, remember this is the only food you’ll be eating for 24-hours.

• DO include beverages! Each menu should contain food and drink items. No MRE is complete without having some “Coffee, instant, type II” or a delicious “Beverage base powder, lemon” component. Participants will choose their own appealing beverage mixes to include in the GSMRE according to their personal preferences. These are the only beverages permitted during chow day, so plan well. Hint: Gatorade fruit punch really hits the spot on a hot day.

• DON’T include items that have a long cook or prep time. Military field rations are designed to be eaten quickly. If it can’t be prepared and eaten within 30 minutes, DON’T include it. However, camping stoves and ration heaters are permitted.

• DO ensure that each food item is shelf stable, safe for consumption after being left at room temperature for days, weeks, and months, and capable of being transported by backpack, school bag, or haversack.

• DO include food that can be heated up before serving. Warm rations are typically more palatable and a real morale booster. Military rations around the world use different methods of reheating and some require hot water. For this challenge, all reheating methods are permitted and encouraged. However, any component that requires reheating or cooking, e.g. freeze-dried food, must be capable of being prepared using a camping stove or open fire.

• DO pack up all your items into a waterproof bag or sack capable of fitting into a backpack. Aim for a 2-gallon or 8L size maximum.

How the GSMRE challenge will be run:

✓ Today…until storage day: diners will sign up and begin assembling their “Gas Station MRE’s”.

✓ April 16, 2022, aka “Storage Day”: Each participant will post a photo of their packed  up GSMRE and store it in the proverbial “cool, dry spot” for a week.

✓ April 23, 2022, aka “Chow day”: Beginning at 0001 Local time…or whenever the alarm bell rings… each diner will consume the items in their MRE for the next 24 hours. No other food will be eaten during “Chow day”, just the stuff in your GSMRE. This includes beverages! Your carefully crafted menu plans may be disregarded…’cuz that’s what happens in the field…but you are entirely reliant on your GSMRE (and water as needed). Please post photos of meals eaten or action shots of that grape jelly on your face. Photos can be posted later if you don’t have internet access during Chow Day, but we want to see what you ate and how you ate it. As Steve would say, “let’s get that out on a tray!”

✓ April 24, 2022: GSMRE survivors will be asked to provide some feedback on their rations and experiences. Did you have too much food? Too little? Was it too salty? Too sweet? Would more beverages have been nice? Did your ration survive the 7-day storage period? Let the other GSMRE sufferers survivors know what worked...and what didn't!

If you are ready to grab a spork or ration spoon, fill your haversack, and try something new, sign up! (And, by-the-bye, there is a merit badge for those who complete the challenge.  :tu:)

Oh yes! I regretted not getting in on the original one, definitely down for this  :tu:

I'll assemble per instructions but may not eat all of it based on whatever my calorie allowance is at the time. I finally get to use my MSR Pocket Rocket  :ahhh

Another question, if I choose freezedried meal(s), do I have to use open flame to heat the water or is it enough to know/explain how to do it? :dunno:
It's kind of strict with open flames at work with bio gas powered buses

Awesome!!!

Of course WE are ready for more fun!

Hevy and Vítor ready for one more GSMRE challenge!

We enjoyed a lot the last one, and I and my son (or clone) were expecting for the next.
We had great moments together learning about MRE, selecting the items (for dismay of Mrs Hevy) and eating all the stuff.

i may be away during the last week of April/beginning of May,so,my chow day pics may be postponed.
even if i don't complete the challenge,i will have learnt something

I'm going to tentatively consider this. I'm watching football that day, thankfully at home which will make it easier, but it will mean I'd have to consider my participation. Especially as there'd normally be a few pints consumed on the day as well. :drink:

Also, as a thought, how does claiming the GSMRE badge in parallel with another challenge work? With it not being a "traditional" challenge badge, could we claim it whilst still going through the Soldier On! badge? I don't want to be brought up in front of High Command for misdemeanours in the field. Again. :ahhh

• Matches (for the accessory packet, gotta have an accessory packet)

For me, the Charms candy are a MUST. Charms candy were part of WW II rations and emergency rations for US aviators and soldiers. Truth be told, I prefer Life Savers™, but the Charms have a nostalgic value that can't be replaced!  :D

I'm one of the few people in the armed forces ever to have genuinely liked the issued RatPacks, so the idea of this one really appeals to me.
However, I don't feel it's very much of a challenge, given that the last ratpacks I was issued were simply compiled from off-the-shelf civvy products... with the only possible exception being the Yorkie bar that read "Not for Civvies". Also, with the very free and open stipulation that we can use "shops, stores, gas stations, or online", that means I could go pretty much anywhere and get everything to make the aforementioned ratpacks.

So unless I've missed something, where's the actual challenge?

Tasky, I'm with you in that I actually loved our MRE's.  Building your own is even better!

So unless I've missed something, where's the actual challenge?

I kinda enjoyed MRE's, too. But...I've never had to live on them for more than a couple days. Lucky me.  ;)

The challenge is to come up with your own version. Or to duplicate some other country's version as near as you can. If you want to create more of a challenge for yourself, and I'd admire this... :pok:..., give yourself one hour in one service station (Gas Station, here) to build your GSMRE. Remember, everything must be shelf-stable and stored for a week.

Or, build your "Dream MRE": pick the best of the best, be that Yorkie Bar or tinned mussels.  :tu:

A big part of my motivation in doing these challenges is to come up with ideas for camping or backpacking food. And I enjoy the camaraderie of everyone building his or her GSMRE, sharing what they enjoyed, didn't enjoy, and how bad their heartburn was.  ;)

So unless I've missed something, where's the actual challenge?

Trying to find coffee that will rival my dark roast Mexican cold brew.  :ahhh

I see it more as a bit of fun with likeminded folks than a challenge :tu:
But that is how I see any challenge here :dunno:

Cold rainwater collected in an empty ammo can and a sachet of instant brown is basically the same right?

Surely Mexico makes instant coffee for the occasion, I know they make instant Abuelita  :ahhh

I kinda enjoyed MRE's, too. But...I've never had to live on them for more than a couple days. Lucky me.
MREs were a treat for me! Some of the slop that was served in the galley was downright unappealing.

Found these fruit snack bars today; small, only 60 Kcal, but they might add a little fruit 'goodness' to each meal. Ingredients are just dried fruit, that's it.

3,431 Kcal and 108 gms protein. Don't ask how much sugar......

Oh-kay, my GSMRE is complete. I scavenged stuff from my stash of camping meals, got some items from the market, a local candy shop, and, yes, a gas station. It comes in just barely over 3 pounds (1.36 Kg) and delivers a whopping 3755 Kcal. I thought about paring it down to save space and weight, but I think I'll leave it as is. I like the variety and the options. I doubt I'll eat more than 2000 Kcal, but....that 'Cookie, Soft' sounds like it could be alright.....

I think Cliff bars are more "fuel" than "food".

I've got a few stashed in the basement in the box labelled "trail food". Some are from....well....a while ago. I should probably relabel the box "trail fuel".

Cliff bars are really popular around here, judging by the way they are sold everywhere. I think, relatively fresh, they are perfectly edible. Do they appeal to the gourmet's sense of elegant dining...? Not so much.  :-\

Turns out you're not far off.  I found a small quantity of coffee sticks that say you can make hot coffee or cold brew.  I didn't have an empty ammo can, so I dumped one in a slightly colder than room temp bottle of water.  It was enough like coffee to get the job done.   :tu:

i drink tea, specifically the Five Roses "Ceylon or African blend". i'm not a fan of the Rooibos [Afrikaans for redbush] tea but it will do in a pinch.
i like coffee with a lot of milk, and sugar.

Not all is going in the GSMRE (the corn chips and combos are already claimed by wife).  The pork rinds and cheese curls are bulky so may need to think about.  The almonds just may need to be eaten in some sort of test taste before.

I'll hop in. Already have a camping trip scheduled that weekend, so it'll be perfect. Walked down to the Wawa and Turkey Hill to do some recon tonight.

I’m not familiar with Turkey Hill, but Wawa tends to have some good stuff.

Wawa is generally better than Turkey Hill, but I think I'll be hitting TH more for this particular challenge. I'll be making several (probably going camping with 4 people) so we'll hopefully get some variety.

Well, this should be interesting...

I mean, of course I found this with whole 2 days time to assemble something resembling a MRE

Sure, I'm in!  :tu:

Quick & Dirty version (subject to change in following two days)

GSMRE Mk.2

Notice the excess of calories... Some of the items on the menu have excessively large portion sizes (namely the cracotte crackers and banana chips), meaning I cannot get them in any smaller bags/boxes

Hence, only part of them will be consumed on the Chow day and the rest will be snacked on later. This is not optimal, but that is how we must proceed as of now...

Ps. oh and do not mind of the (s) or (k) markers, just for myself to remember where to buy em... :D

The excess size of some packages is what I’m dealing with on a couple items.  Last challenge I put some in ziploc bags to break it down to a reasonable portion, but we shall see.

It's not that stressful  :tu:

Aye, I'm not panicking over it. I'll be treating it like I'm packing for a day at the cricket, as I'm out all day and won't be able to cook/heat things up. So it'll be unhealthy and a mishmash, but at the same time it'll do the job. :tu:

Yeah Mine is a bit different, it requires hot water to make the mains, but that's about all  :)

You can do it.  Put together a rough idea of what you would want then see what you can find.

Mine is also going to need hot water for some food and drink.

2nd convenience store haul

Needless to say not all the coffee or oatmeal will be included but some of it will definitely be included.  And the popcorn will be cooked over a camp stove, easily under the time limit.

For my dinner I did choose to deviate from the actual gas station convenience store and stopped into REI which was just down the road.

Made it!  I've been on a weight loss diet the last few weeks, so this looks scrimpy.  I threw in some high calorie foods to make up for the lack of quantity.
1 packet of Salmon : 80 calories
1 packet of tuna: 70 calories
1 tuna meal, crackers included: 220 calories
2 Snack Packs pudding: 100 calories ea.
2 Clif bars: 260 calories ea.
1 bag of Combos: 980 calories total.
1 packet of Pop Tarts: 370 calories
Total: 2080 calories

I'm on vacation this week so my work lunch bag is containing this collection and keeping my sheepdogs from devouring it

Little changes here and there (mostly due to not finding the stuff in the store  )

Also, the Cracotte crackers came in two sealed bags in the box, so I can just use one for the MRE

Couldn't find the banana chips so I got some white choc covered ones so we can be even more unhealthy

There may be more changes tomorrow, who knows  :D

It is a lot of calories and most probably won”5 be eaten, but there is a good selection.

Hi, all!  How's everyone doing?!

Just like to post my GSMRE2 content, before putting it away for the wait:

Based on last challenge experience, I packed way, way too much food last time, so I gonna keep the calories and volume down a little this time.  It will still fit the 2700 Calories requirement easy, but since we are now almost summer, it will not be the same as the GRE at colder temperature.

Meals:
Instant Noodle (1)      485
Instant Noodle (2)      472
Instant Noodle (3)      140
Self-heating Hotpot    750+ (this thing is a total calories bomb, everything drips in oil with this...)

Snack:
Korean Seaweed   25
Crunch x6               26x6

Drink:
Pocari Sweat               287  (no, this has nothing to do with sweat collecting from ancient greek boy...)
Milk Tea Packet x2      82x2
Green Tea Packet       82
Lemon Tea                  138

The electric collapsable hotpot is a new toy Mrs got me, perfect for travelling and quick meal on the road.

So,my GSMRE doesn't look very exciting.
I couldn't get out much during the last week, and would have added smaller chocolate bars and some energy drink powder, and another main, but this is probably the best i'd get putting together a GSMRE using gas stations in my immediate vicinity, but some gas stations have better ranges of snacks, some processed meats [but those aren't shelf stable] and biltong [i really wanted to add biltong].
I used the local supermarkets, but could have done a bit better if I took more time to browse last time i was there [but i planned on going back]😁.
i scrounged the 2 packs of biscuits and chocolate from the grocery cupboard.
I considered ordering the SANDF 24hr MRE online just for the mains, but that wouldn't have been in the spirit of the challenge.
My calorie count and weights are -

OK, my GSMRE is finalized and packed up.

zoidberg inspired me to include a toothbrush. I've awl-ways been jealous of those nations that provide a toothbrush in the 24 hour ration pack. Brilliant. In my first GSMRE, I added one to make the accessory packet more interesting and fun. (And I used it!) I was going to be a bit lazy and leave it out this time ('cuz American rats don't include toothbrushes...), but when I saw zoidberg added one, my envy got the better of me.  :D  Worth the weight!   :tu:

Pack up!

A rush job to get this together, but planning for multiple day trips watching cricket means I have a good idea of what lasts under what conditions... Makes you wonder what's in some of this stuff! But we're packed up, stored and ready to roll next week.

I know the pasties show a shorter use by date than required, I realised and went and got a longer dated pack a few days later, but I'd already taken the photo and couldn't be bothered doing a new one!

Also, the idea is to use the pop bottle for water when empty, which will be easily refilled through the day when needed.

The pasties sit at room temp?  For a week?

That is a bit worrisome......   Because my region has a strong history of mining, we also have a strong pastie tradition here. Fresh pasties are sold from various food trucks, stands, and....even the local gas station.

Nice load out. Sounds like cricket matches are more fun than I thought...

Bonus point for including Irn Bru.  :tu:

I've had the same ones sitting at the bottom of a bag in the middle of summer for a few days, so the proverbial cool, dry spot should be fine. I hope. Pasties and pies are found all over the place here. It's a bit bizarre to go down south and not be able to find any so easily!

Nice load out. Sounds like cricket matches are more fun than I thought...

Even if you don't like the sport itself, it's a good excuse for many to have a picnick and a good drink. :D :drink:

It was either that or Vimto, and I thought something fizzy would be better for this challenge!

Four MREs here. One each for me, my wife, our daughter, and one of her friends. We'll see how the girls do, we'll have some back up "real" food if they need it. We didn't inventory the kid's bags, but they had fun getting to pick out whatever junk they wanted at Wawa. I expect a lot of swapping back and forth between my wife and I, so we're counting calories as packed, and will do our best to keep track over the trip.

Mine-
Notes: Two kinds of fig bar to taste test. Charms, Bazooka gum, pound cake, and Peanut Chews for authenticity. Wish I got more fruit/veggies in there, but it'll be fine for one day.
Total: 3745

Wife-
Notes: "I packed way too much food."

Regrettably, I must bow out of this one. I completely forgot to raid the food stash and make notes of calorie counts and whatnot. On top of that, the instant coffee I thought was on hand turned out to have been consumed or discarded a while back. I'll be checking in to see what kind of fun (or is that anguish?) y'awl have, though.

That's too bad, Dan, you will be missed. :hatsoff:

I managed to pull a day's worth of food out of the pantry since I never had a chance to go shopping to buy anything special for this challenge, but at least I'll verify that some of my long term storage foods are still edible and sufficient to provide nutrition in an emergency.  Some of the items were not in their original packaging so they didn't have nutritional information listed but I think I will have more calories than I will need in any case.  I've got breakfast, lunch, supper, and snacks covered.

instant oatmeal - No calories shown on package
instant coffee - No calories shown on package x 6 packages
Propel lemon drink - 20 calories shown on package x 2 packages (2 servings per package)
Crystal lite lemon drink No calories shown on package
Glucerna protein shake, chocolate - 180 calories
Glucerna protein shake, strawberry - 140 calories
can of garbanzo beans - 400 calories for the whole can
Vienna sausages - 240 calories for the whole can
sardines - 200 calories per can x 2 cans
Ramen noodle soup - 390 calories for the whole package
peanut butter crackers - No calories shown on package x 2 packages.
Bullion packets - No calories shown on package.

Total known calories = 1750

I suspect there are another 200 calories or more in the products that don't have a nutritional label but this still seemed low to me as I believe a healthy adult will need 3000 calories a day to be able to perform any sort of meaningful amount of labor.  I was able to add a jar of peanut butter at 180 calories per 2 Tbsp. serving, and still was able to close the one gallon Zip-lock bag.  I honestly don't eat that much in a normal day because I'm on medications that take away my appetite but I'll have it if I need it.

In the drink module there is also included some napkins, toothpicks, and disposable cutlery. Titanium options will be on-hand as part of standard-issue gear as alternatives to the last item. A 3 set of dry bags was requisitioned for the operation, the others will find missions certainly

I'll be pushing my chow day a couple days to Sunday, due to prior arrangements.

Only notes so far: I wanted to include jerky, but Tesco denied the request. I have also since discovered Tim Horton's Vanilla, French and wish I had picked some up early enough to incloude a portion in the kit.

My friends, I am sorry but I just haven't had my head in the game enough to get anything together for the challenge. I got as far as briefly testing out some vegan and then vegetarian jerky , neither of which met even the sea bottom standard of cuisine set by U Boat, and then my other interests (currently Maschinen Krieger and Gundam models) proved too diverting.

I wish you all the best for next Saturday and hopefully next year I will concentrate more on the challenge.

I'd have to make up about 700 calories to meet the required 2400.  I should have looked at the rules again before filling the bag.  I know I wouldn't eat everything in the bag anyway but I think to be fair I should start out the same as everyone else and I think I'm too far from meeting the standard.  Mia culpa.

Title: Re: Gas Station MRE II -- second helpings...
Post by: Nix on April 18, 2022, 08:57:43 PM
   Maybe next time 'round.

The rules are based on what I found to be the US military's minimum daily calorie allowance for an MRE (x3/day). A typical MRE is around 1,200 Kcal. Three per day is around 3,600 Kcal.

However, because soldiers would often "field strip" their MRE's to save weight and space, a new ration was developed: the "First Strike" ration. This is meant to be used for 24 hours during high tempo operations. If I recollect accurately, the first version of the First Strike ration was 2,400 Kcal. DoD studies found this was the minimum required average caloric need for active soldiers to maintain performance standards. Now, current versions of the First Strike rations have somewhere between 2,700-2,900 Kcal. I don't know if this reflects further studies, experience, or simple 'calorie creep'.  :dunno:

Anyway, that is how I arrived at what might seem like an arbitrary minimum calorie requirement for this challenge.

Interestingly, this calorie calculator from Mayo Clinic (https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/calorie-calculator/itt-20402304) ( Linky (https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/calorie-calculator/itt-20402304) ) suggests that I consume 2,600 Kcal/day. Frankly, that sounds like a lot to me.....but if it means an extra slice of pie......

A man has to do what a man has to do... ;)  I don't understand the rationale in that link, though.  If I were totally inactive it says I should eat 2400cal/day.  I'm pretty sure I don't eat that much, and I'm more active.

Started the day early, ate a kimchee way early in the morning before I head to bed.

Chow Day 0850
(https://i.imgur.com/fPbS1st.jpg)
Getting ready for breakfast, the instant boiler brought by Mrs is decent.  It could collapse into itself when done, and boil the water in about 6-7min.  The 'boil' function is up to no good, it didn't even bring the water into a rolling boil and as soon as small bubbles emerged, it stopped.  The 'cooking' function is alright, it will keep heating up the water and eventually bring the water to a rolling boil, which is quite essential for health reason.

Breakfast (0800-ish):

Thought of SOS24 and pulled out me old Coleman stove. 36ºF (2.22º C) this morning and it took a while (i.e. loooooong time, "where's the coffee!!!") to get the military mug up to a boil. A pot that fit the stove better would likely have gotten to the boil faster. And a lid would have helped.....

Accessory packet got opened up for 1) the matches to light the stove, 2) condensed milk packet (best by 2018), and 3) the awl-important spork.

Breakfast packet looked pretty good, but I wasn't feeling all that hungry:

Just made oatmeal with raisins and the much anticipated coffee.

The oatmeal thickened up a bit as the raisins and oats sat in the rapidly cooling water. Coffee stayed nice and warm in the insulated mug.

Chow Day 1815
(https://i.imgur.com/uyvg6PD.jpg)
I pack a lot lighter than last time, or maybe it was the lack of caffeine, I felt hungry and groggy towards the evening.  So I started digging into my ration bag and got dinner going.  Dinner included a self-heating "Ha Di Lao" spicy hotpot(highly recommend it, especially if you are into spicy food) and another ramen noodle.  The hotpot got good flavor, and I did get sense of fullness due to all the spicy oil floating on top.  But in terms of long term nutrition value, it's probably counterproductive since you are not going to ingest enough.  I only finished half of the ramen.

I gave one "My First Victorinox" to him at age of six (If my memory is correct).
Now he also have a beautifull Signature lite with silvertech scales (from Nix).
And a Huntsman from his grandpa.
In the Sak lanyard he have a scary pumpkim to remember one challenge that we did together.
I began to share my hobbies with him at early age. And since then he's my partner in every cool things!

Interesting breakfast.

Over the last year I have changed a lot of what and when I eat.
I try not to snack after dinner, skip breakfast and lunch if possible.
If lunch is needed then it's things like bacon and eggs or avocados.
Coffee was the hardest thing to stop.
Hot chocolates will be the next thing to go.

Artificial sweeteners are no bueno.  Even as a diabetic my doctor told me that small amounts of real sugar when I have the urge for something sweet is better for me than something that comes from a lab. Besides, have you ever tried to buy a sugar free birthday cake?  The nice women in the bakery all look at you with their heads tilted and with the most strained and confused looks on their faces.  Like the dog when you make a squeaky noise out of the corner of your mouth.
I don't think I could go the day without caffeine and I'm glad I don't have to try.  Those Folgers instants are actually pretty good. In solidarity with you all in this challenge I did mostly eat the stuff I had packed for the challenge but as I suspected I found my selection woefully inadequate.  I'll be better prepared for the next one.

Lunch (1200-ish):

Got out for a nice hike after breakfast. The weather was a bit iffy, but MRE's always taste better after a hike and in the cold & rain.

A bit breezy and snow flurries off & on, but I found a good spot on the lee of a ridge and broke out the lunch packet:

As usual, the exertion of hiking kinda killed my appetite. I kept out the fruit bar (not bad), mussels, and freeze dried Pad Thai. And sriracha hot sauce. The Pad Thai called for 250 mL or "1 cup"....well....I couldn't remember if "a cup" was 8oz or 12oz... and my mug didn't have metric measurements. I ended up erring on the 12oz side.....

Once the boiling water was added, I wrapped the packet of Pad Thai in my fleece pullover to stay warm while it rehydrated for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, those mussels were looking pretty good.....

Once the pine needles were removed, the mussels were excellent (made in Spain, so no surprise there!). And they were pretty filling....

Pad Thai turned out to be a bit soup, no surprise given my excessive added water, but it was very tasty. I was impressed by the cilantro flavor and background seafood flavor from anchovy salt and dried shrimps.

I only ate about half of the portion. The mussels ( and extra water) had filled me up pretty well. I did have that little fruit bar for dessert--bland but nice.

Dinner

Did some snacking throughout the day. I finished the peanuts, and the two fig bars. The original Fig Newtons won out over the fancier blueberry pack. Didn't put much of a dent in the candy, or open the Combos or sunflower seeds. Ideally, I would've rather had a smaller portion of multiple snacks, but the gas station sells what they sell.

Dinner was chicken ramen for me. My wife, who mostly played along today, used the camp stove for the first time to make her Chef Boyardee. To keep it traditional, I had pound cake for dessert.

Total Calories: ~2900

More than I usually eat, but it was also a pretty active (and chilly) day, so I suspect it was about right.

Not sure how much more snacking I'll do tonight, so this might be the last update for the day. Nice work, awl! I'll check in tomorrow.

Supper (1830-ish):

The supper packet seemed to have....potential.

I was thinking Ramen + Spam....

Plus black olives....

Awl seasoned up with the real Tabasco....

I'm calling this a success. (Mrs Nix had a bite and thought it was 'really good', but had an omelette instead of an offer for a bowl of her own.....)

After washing up, I used the packet of True Lemon drink mix and the packet of raw sugar from the accessory packet to make a hot lemon drink. This was surprisingly good, I'll make this again.  :tu:

And I scarfed up that little fruit bar ("That's It"). They are quite bland, but strangely satisfying. Especially with a hot lemon drink.  :D

I'll probably tackle that cocoa and the choco chip cookie later......

Vitor drinks coffee?
Yes! Vítor drinks coffee. And likes!
Coffee for him is more a weekeend thing. The usual is milk with chocolate.

Some crackers, orange (Vítor) /passion fruit (Hevy) and cheese. The boy got his cheese before I had a chance to take the picture.

Dinner 2030

Well... I really like instant noodles.
Vítor got the Cup Noodles (with bacon added).
I tried a healthier option. Gluten free, low carbs, low sodium... Good apearence, but tasted like cardboard.
Vítor likes bacon a lot, but I keep his diet a lot more healthy than in the GSMRE challenge.

Dinner
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220424/7484257f76fb4ade28146904d5978924.jpg)
After boiling water and while the meal cooked, I toasted the poptart and ate as appetizer.  The wife wasn’t a fan of the campfire flavor, but I enjoyed.
The meal was rather tasty and definitely filling.  The wife said she would even eat it again.

Even though I ate a couple hours ago, I am still full.

For the fun of it, I did a summary of what I ate and have left.  Only 1535 calories total which means I didn’t even eat half the GSMRE, but I do still feel full.  Other than the poptarts and mad dragon, most of the food eaten was high in protein and/or fiber which is probably why the low calorie count.

Breakfast part 2

This is a fairly typical routine.  Fisher and I make oatmeal and coffee outdoors.  Even a picture of Fisher supervising.

Looks like Fisher is having a great time in the challenge! :tu:

Cattle beast skull.
That's pretty neat, I'd freak out slightly if I could only see it in the photo...

View from the lunchroom:

That mussels look yum, and the fleece around the rehydrating pack is a good trick! :like:

I forgot to post lunch earlier.  Tuna and crackers.

Wrap up:

I thoroughly enjoyed the GSMRE experience. It was fun to put it together, to try a few new items, and to revisit some old ones.  :tu:

Yes, I ended up eating the cookie (Best By: Jan 2021), and it tasted a bit funny, but I think that is normal for pre-packaged, shelf stable, cookies.....  :dunno:

So, in the end I ate approximately 2,200 Kcal of my ration which was listed as having 3,700 Kcal. I ate a bit more than I felt I really needed, but still fell short of the military's desired 2,400 Kcal. Maybe I would have eaten more if I'd been sleeping out in the cold and snow?  :dunno:

The highlight of the MRE for me was those tasty Spanish mussel in sofrito. Really good and easy to eat. However, the down side was the weight and the bulky trash. Because of that, I doubt I'd take them on an extended backpacking trip. (And they were a bit messy, too.)

The least pleasurable item was the cookie. Not bad, and yes, I ate the whole thing, but not good, either.

I really liked the lemon drink mix used to make a hot lemon drink, I'll me doing that again. With a packet of sugar, it seemed comforting and rejuvenating. I don't typically use sugar in my drinks, but after being out in the cold for a day, the little boost of glucose was nice.

I carried several other drink mixes, but they weren't used. I think this was because, in the cold, I wanted warm drinks. If it had been a ot day, I probably would have used those more.

The one thing I didn't include but wish I had was some chewing gum. Not necessary, but I definitely would have like some gum after lunch, and maybe while I was hiking.  :tu:

It definitely wan’t bland, actually a little spicier than expected.  Starkist makes several different flavored varieties in pouches.  I don’t usually eat tuna plain, but find the pouches are good for throwing in a bag as a “just in case” meal/snack.

I bet a little honey would have been even better than the sugar in the hot lemon drink and it is sold in individual packets.

So, we had a bit of an issue when my phone completely shut down and wouldn't start up again. Completely bricked. It had suffered (what I thought was) minor water damage a few weeks ago, but everything seemed fine. Oh well. But it all  a few of the GSMRE photos have gone and I was unable to provide any update yesterday... I've also been unable to get things uploaded and onto here all day. But, we've got a barely-working stand-in and a new phone coming tomorrow, so we'll just have to plod on!

Anyway, as it was everything held up quite well, although I think I'd have a definite rethink over the main components of dinner and tea. A little less pastry required next time, it was very stodgy. The Jaffa Cakes ended up going untouched and there was a mix of the varying sweets consumed at various points instead. I did have a note of rough kcals consumed, but it's been lost to the gods of technological smurf-ups (along with all the notes I'd made along the way) and I can't remember for the life of me what it was... And this is a far more condensed write-up than intended, which is ever so slightly annoying. Hopefully it's still enough, all things considered!

Still, the leftovers worked out nicely for the cricket today... And next time I'll try and remember to plan a little better! And hopefully the technology won't let me down...

GSMRE Debrief:

It was nice to go camping with relatively minimal food/cooking gear. Haven't done it in a while, and it really saves on the packing. Clean up was also basically non existent. Actual food was meh, and I only ate around half of what I packed. I think if I'd expanded my shopping options to an actual grocery store instead of the gas station both of those could've been largely eliminated. Very jealous of some of the more interesting/tasty entrees some of you showed off, and I would've loved to pack some smaller portions of multiple snacks, rather than just devouring an entire bag of peanuts like an MRElephant.

Biggest plus was getting to do it with my wife and stepdaughter (telling a kid they can buy as much gas station crap as they want is an experience all parents should have at least once.) My wife hasn't been camping a lot, and this was our first trip out without "real" food. She also appreciated the lack of prep, clean up, etc. Since she tends to overpack, anything that'll encourage her to take less is welcome.

We may be doing a relaxed version of the challenge again next week. We'll be camping again, but will be working on running events for much of the trip, so quick/easy food will probably be the order of the weekend.

Thanks to Nix for organizing, and great to see everyone else's meals!

Chow Day!

Operations were delayed due to administrative conflicts, but chow day progressed without error but, not without wants!

Despite what the tyrannical HQ dictate our eating schedules be like, I only eat two meals, rather than the standard three. Which is probably a good thing given the state of this private's PT  :ahhh

Meal 1

For the first meal I went with the noodle cup and chips, this kind of thing makes up a shameful amount of my meals normally anyway, and I find these flavours/brands rather enjoyable. So success  :tu:

No documentation, but the first hazelnut protein bar was consumed as a snack here, as was the chocolate bar, whimsical. The latter is a regular treat so I knew it was a winner but the protein bar was new. It tasted really nice actually and was selected for the dinner option  :tu:

Meal 2

Hazlenut protein bar with a sleeve of doublestuff oreos, I didn't fancy two protein bars and the fiber ones would have been really stodgy with the remaining hazelnut one. Drink base, Orange provided some liquid fortification, otherwise water was consumed only.

Final Thoughts:

A fun challenge, I enjoyed packing it all away and will likely use this method for emergency preps and road trips etc. I didn't consume my full ration as I'm on a calorie restriction right now, but I do wish my menu had been a little different:

Beef jerky - This was originally planned but when my groceries were delivered both options I chose were out of stock, and I forgot to check the local store on the way out of town. This would have added a variety of texture/flavour that would have been nice, made it feel more like a meal.

French Vanilla - I didn't know what this was or that I liked it when I packed the MRE, but I've gotten really fond of it and got two tubs from the Tim Hortons at the town I was staying in. I ziploc'd portion would have gone down a treat.

More chips - I wish I had included a second packet or gotten a larger bag, the multipack ones are pretty small and I would have liked some with each meal.

Coke Zero - Normally have a can with meals and wish I had some on hand on packing day, I'm happy with the 'real MRE feel' of the powdered drink bases though.

Cheese - Look, I'm just not as brave as the rear admiral Nix, I had string cheese but I wasn't going to pack it away out the fridge for 9/10 days before consuming it

Was really fun, next time I'll try and get out with my camp stove and cookware too  :tu:

Now to apply for the badge  :ahhh

Debriefing.

I and my son enjoyed a lot (again) the GSMRE Challenge.
Or as we called It "The GSMRE Strikes Back"
Was a funny time together planing, chosing items and eating!
Was really nice see the choices of all participants, the acessories, places...
(Our original plan was spend the day outside and enjoy a ride in horses, but the forecast said "no").
Vítor used the very nice spork that Nix sent to him last year. (Thanks Nix!)
This was a pleasuring challenge, very apreciated.

i had to adjust my chow day menu.
i suffered  freak accident yesterday, fracturing my jaw and breaking some teeth,i cannot use my entire MRE.
i had surgery this morning to mend my jaw. i'm fortunate that i still breathing.
out of necissity, all i can eat right now are the Lemon Creams, dipped in tea,so i don't have to chew [i'm not being "hardcore",that's really all i can stomach or eat now].
i had planned on  prepping my stuff on a camping stove but will have to scrap that idea.
i had to skip breakfast, supper will be the same as lunch.

You don't have to do this now, you know.  The most important thing is that you get well and take care of yourself.  Whatever you did that broke your jaw and knocked out your teeth, don't do that again!

 :iagree:

Really sorry to read of your injury, HARM. Hope you heal up quickly.  :tu:

Chow day doesn't require a participant to consume the entire GSMRE, only the bits he/she desires. Since HARM was able to use his GSMRE on his Chow day, if only in part, he still gets full credit.  :tu: No worries there.

Again, sounds like a really nasty injury, and I hope you heal up soon and can start chewing biltong again!   :tu:
