I don't know if anyone noticed this in the 2017 Calendar, but SOG has released a folder with legality in mind. Unlike the Lansky World Legal Folder (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,59031.0.html) the Terminus isn't trying to look super cool and tactical while still trying to be technically legal everywhere.
According to SOG:
In many places around the world including parts of Europe and cities like New York City, folding knives that lock open are not legal to carry. Knife carry laws vary by region, so make sure to consult your local laws for specific details. Some of the stricter laws prohibit carrying a knife that have long blades, locks open, or can be opened too easily with one hand. Unfortunately, most quality folders have exactly the opposite: longer blades, easy blade opening, and secure blade locks because they appeal to the majority of people. The Terminus fills the gap where most folding knives are prohibited. Check your local laws for details.
The Terminus is available in a stainless satin blade with tan handle (http://www.sogknives.com/terminus-satin.html) or black blade and black handle (http://www.sogknives.com/terminus-black.html) if you still want to be ninja-ish.
I have to say that I really like the look of this knife- the tan one kind of speaks to me. The black one looks pretty cool too, but I think that if you are in a place where you need a legal slip joint it's probably better that it's not tactical black. Just my thoughts though, feel free to make up your own mind.
I like the idea that manufacturers are starting to realise that there is a whole planet out there, full of people who want to carry knives but are limited by what may be available that suits their laws.
Pardon the pun, but I think it is a pretty sharp looking knife, and a good size too. I hope the backspring isn't quite as overpowered as the silly one on the Lansky. This one looks light and easy to maintain and use too, thanks to its skeletonized design.

Heinnie in the UK have it listed, I have two reservations about it.
It's expensive here (£66 & £79) and the blade length is 7.6mm, the max here is 7.62mm, that's a bit close to call considering it doesn't state whether that's the cutting edge length or the blade length.
I'm going to avoid it for now :(
-
Street price is around $50 for the tan and $60 for the black. That's not cheap but it doesn't seem that bad.
I have seen worse knives go for a lot more.

It still looks very tacticool.

Well that's just us getting gouged on prices again in the UK

It's too bad you don't know anyone on this side of the pond that deals in SOG stuff..... :pok:

I can have 10 of that blade lengths in my pocket, and no one will notice a thing.... Cops probably just stop me to praise how cute they are if they can see them :D

Yeah that can suck.
I'm sure we can work out a solution if you ever wanted to give it a shot for this or anything else.

How does the blade stay open? There seems to be no back spring on it.
Some kind of lock bar?

Looks like a stop pin.

I like the look of the knife. Like the idea and market they are accommodating. Think they may have executed it well, but for the price I would like to see a higher end steel than BD1. I'm not saying it needs a "super steel", but I would like to see something better. If the knife was in the $30-$35 range then BD1 would be adequate in my opinion. I gravitate towards the Tan version as well. As long as the quality is there I would say they will do pretty good on this one.

Remember it cannot lock to be legal in all these places.
Yes your sketch is correct. Here is a pic I pulled online.

I agree, for $30 I can get excellent BD1 from Cold Steel (Pro Lite, Pocket Bushman...) or Spyderco (Byrd Line) and know the quality will be there...

I have more pics... those were just the ones I posted.... here's the whole enchilada for you:

At about $70 and Chinese made, no way. I can choose from a large variety of non-locking,sub 3 inch traditional folders for that--even many USA and Japan Spydercos are less than that.
-
It doesn't do it for me, but I don't think it looks bad for those who are inclined towards more modern knives. At £66 though it does feel a bit more than I'd like to be paying.
-
I would assume the retention is done by a liner and a ball bearing. Just like the detent on a lock bar, except it doesn't lock. I believe it is a Terzuola retention systemathing.
-
Agree, there are many options for slipjoints in that price range, unless you want one that looks tacticool.
-
Well, I like the way it looks. :D

It is a good looking knife, it's just it's too close to not being legal here. If they shortened the blade 5mm I'd be all over it (when the price drops).
-
I'll send you mine after I drop it a few times... would that work? :D

Not my thing but cool enough if you can't have a locking knife, aren't into the UKPK and/or can't have OHO, and don't like traditional knives.

I like it.
I mean, I'm not likely to ever see one in person, and I doubt I'd pay whatever the local going rate would be if one could be got at all....
But given that "locking" is not a Must for me, and whilst not technically illegal in many circumstances, having non-locking can make the local cop/security muppet less antsy about things - It looks like a nice blade, nice handle, if the pocket clip is strong, it appears that it would be an absolute winner daily carry and work knife.
(In writing the post I discovered I can get to the "all knives" part of the Gerber site, but not the "Tactical knives" section --- Too many bad words in the tactical section for the firewall?
-
I just ordered one of these from Heinnie Haynes as they are selling the tan one for £32. Thought it would be worth a punt at that price.

I just got a Terminus slipjoint a few days ago and I’m really impressed with it , I got the tan version in the Black Friday sales. I can’t really fault it in anyway , unlike the Powerlock I got as well with its lacklustre locks but that’s another thread.

There are no legal folders in Australia.
Even a micro Victornox is ILLEGAL by our draconian laws.
I bet even a rubber knife would see an Australian arrested.
its what you get when your politicians are so corrupt that they are afraid the people will rise up against them.
All wielding that most dangerous weapon of choice "The Mini Champ"
Looking for blood and freedom.
I have even heard that they are going to start a house to house search to confiscate every bladed tool and weapon they can find.
Meat at the supermarket will be all cut to bite sized portions so that cutlery is unnecessary.
Carpenters tools will all have to be locked into secure steel boxes, so that those without a "special" licence cannot get access to them.
Butchers will be required to undergo psychological and character tests.
Yep, Australia the safe country.......... :climber:
