Title: Multitool.org Think Tank Rules- READ BEFORE POSTING
Post by: Grant Lamontagne on May 23, 2013, 03:23:51 PM
Hello all,

The Think Tank/ R&D Forum is a place for designers of tools, knives, sheaths or other related products to congregate for the purpose of refining their projects.  Posting a new thread in this forum is by subscription only, however any registered member is free to reply.  This ensures that the community here is not limited with regards to input, and that designers in turn support the community that is helping them.  Subscription information is as follows:

30 Days= $10
365 Days= $100

You can purchase your subscription by selecting PROFILE at the top of your screen then selecting ACTIONS and PAID SUBSCRIPTIONS.

No Life Club Members are exempt from this subscription and can post new threads here.  Anyone with over a thousand posts has obviously already contributed to this forum, and it would be awful rude of us not to acknowledge that.

Nice job Grant, now there is a place to direct those threads.   :tu:

Hopefully people will start looking for feedback before the design is completely finalized, otherwise it's just advertising.

So where do you draw a line between this forum and the mod squad?
Take Syph's knifes for instance. They base on standard tools, but all together with the screws and some tools mods, they are completely new.

Does such a thread belong here or in the mod squad?

I say Mod, since it is based on an existing design, but I think we'll look at things on a case by case basis.  Either way that example is actually not a very good one since Syph007 has more than enough posts to post his designs here without having to get a paid subscription.

The idea of the subscription is for guys who come in fresh off the street and want us to provide input on their designs.

MTO R&D and Think Tank are just names I came up with off the top of my head while putting it together.  If anyone has any other thoughts or suggestions for names, please feel free to sing out.  After all, brainstorming is what this section is all about!  :D

After reading the thread about the new member's kickstarter one piece tool phenomenon, I now understand what this section is for.
Grant, I think that the purpose of this section it will be kind of unclear and may seem condescending to people that come from outside of this community, and also to other members.
A more in-depth explanation is needed for this R&D thing to work.

Or maybe I just need some more coffee...

Feel free to make any suggestions you may have- it's only be refining this section to properly meet designer's needs that we'll be able to make it work.

I think it's a great idea, and much needed given the recent influx of kickstarter type projects just looking for free advertising. If it's actually feedback someone wants, this gives them a very cheap way of accessing the hive mind, and probably ending up with a lot of loyal customers too.

Maybe it needs a tweak or two, but in essence it's something we were lacking and now it's here :tu:

Yup, definitely a lot of tweaking to come yet, but it's a start.

This section ought to be a great place for official forum projects, like the challenge coins, to help stop them getting buried in the general tool discussion forum.
Perhaps the original coin thread could be moved here as it's full of great ideas that could be utilised in the future.

If you have idea for a different design, which couldn't really be produced from modding an existing design, but would most likely need to be made from scratch, would that fit here?

And I mean if you have no interest in producing that design yourself, but just have the idea, and wish ti put it out there for others to comment on, and maybe take the project on?
