Below are her original "rules". Please read and add your name to be in line to get this generous idea up and running again. First person to add name to list please send me your address US ONLY so I can get it to you.

I was going thru some draws and came up with a few items that I am willing to Giveaway.
The items are a mix of SAKs, tools, knives, flashlights and other small edc items.
Rather than a straight GAW, I thought I’d see if there was some interest in having a Surprise Box style giveaway.
I am going to pack as much as I can in a small flat rate shipping box, then send it to the first person chosen randomly. That person then gets to chose 1-3 items from the box, before sending it off to the next person who gets to do the same thing and down the list until we run out of items or people.
A couple of guidelines to better understand how it will work and agreement that you are making by signing up:
1. Due to shipping costs and not knowing if VAT and taxes would make worthwhile, only US shipping addresses. If there is enough interest from European members, I would be willing to send some items to start a European box.
2. Total number of participants is currently limited to 20 to ensure sufficient items. If I locate more items, I may increase. If so I will announce.
3. Depending on number of items that fit in box and people who sign up, there may be more than one surprise box and list. If so, the people assigned each box and order will be created randomly.
4. The box recipient can select 1-3 items to keep. If more than 1 item is selected then, recipient must add at least one item to the box for each additional item selected before shipping,
5. Anyone who signs up agrees to ship the items to the next person in a timely manner. This means willing to pay for shipping (small flat rate box currently priced at $8.45)
6. If you feel that you get a good deal from what you get from the box, please make a donation to the forum to help support this wonderful place.

And packed it back up with what I had planned to add, in fact I had to leave two other of my signature items for a future adventure, and was unable to fit ANY packing materials into the box before taping shut.
I wanted to avoid the temptation of selecting any more, and with a storm approaching my area Wednesday and Thursday, I needed it to be heading to the next stop to maintain momentum.

That box may have not survived the travels. The box I received from FarmerX and assume the same carton from Poncho was a brown cardboard box about 6x6x10?
Just fits inside a standard mailbox.
An idea, if it grows to much, it could split to two boxes and follow a 2nd distribution channel. Ex: Box ONE and BOX TWO

I split the contents best I could and sent one to Paul. Page one of this thread has a link. They were making good progress then it stalled with SeaMonster. I just bumped that thread thank you.
As for what to do as the box grows? If there aren't any objections I'd suggest let it grow :dunno:. Certainly everyone has a say as the cost does become more.
Small flat rate box is just under $10. Don't know how much its costing to send in its current state :popcorn:.
Really just goes show how flipping generous everyone is. When I got the original BOXES they were so stuffed :rofl:. Admittedly when I sent it it was also bulging. I left a few things out that I wanted to send too.
So happy to see Sos generosity explode with each new recipient.

If we do, it maybe wise to ship to a Member near the border who could transport it across and then POST it onward.
Mail from US to Canada May require extra forms and inspection.
I have not done, but have read of issues.

It's twice as big as a flat rate priority box. I'll probably only keep one or two items, add a couple and send it on to colt. There are a few small boxes that could be left out in order to fit a few more items in it or it could be split.

It's getting expensive to ship it in the box it's in. I should have used a medium Priority box and it would have been around $14. It was $22 to ship it priority in the box it's in.I’ll repackage it, and send out the next day.
The medium flat rate box is also bigger.

I have reorganized the box to more compactly house the GAW items so that I could load it up with my offerings :D
I think I have put in items of comparable value to those I removed. There is still a little space at one corner of the box, so I may add a little more before taping up the box tomorrow morning.

Actually, I was implying that your daughter maybe blame for making the selections to swap out.
Was hoping you would share photo of the haul of selections. It is interesting to observe what tidbits find a home at each stopover.
Increase the interest, of what was in the box and what was added and found a new home with a fellow MTo er.

I'm not trying to highjack this thread, but I wish I could be part of this. I know no such package would ever cross the Atlantic or inter'l borders without "disappearing", so I'm not asking for anything, but I just have great memories from EDC passarounds. :cry:I have successfully sent stuff to Europe and thought about paying shipping to try sending part of this one, like what was done for NZ and Australia. But from what I understand VAT probably would make it not worth it.

Grandma picks up her purse, extracts a Buck Ranger with Stag handles, opens the blade and sliced that corn off the Cobb in no time, wiped the blade and closed and returned to her purse.
I never asked, and she never said a thing, but it was HERS.

Oh, she has all kinds of different SAKs and a few LM tools and does carry something always in her purse (except for when she is at school ;) ) She has a pretty good sized 58mm SAK collection and a few different type knives :cheers:
I have gotten my wife to carry a 58mm alox Classic and that is probably the extent of it :dunno: :D
Bought my mom a No 8 Opinel that she carries in her purse always (I have the small trad that her mom (my granny) carried with her as well :salute: )

After seeing my PS Style, one of my nephews begged me for one so he could have something he could take to school.

Of course I added a few things before I sealed the new, smaller yet somehow heavier box. It will be on its way to LoopCutter as soon as I can get to the post office.

I chose a few items from the box. I was like a kid with a stack of trading cards. "Need it, got it, got 3 of those, need it, got it." Common sense eventually took over and I put most of the items back into the box.

I kept a Spyderco knife but not sure the model, a Schrade hawk's bill electrician, an Imperial sod buster, a Gerber Shortcut, and then, because I needed it to cut the tape on the box, I decided to keep the WorkPro folding box cutter. The box, with some new items I added, is already in LoopCutter's city according to USPS tracking so he should have it Friday or Saturday.That is a nice haul and good variety

It arrived late this afternoon, no notification from USPS😔. Driver left box on the front porch, sitting on the bench totally exposed to the weather. Found it while picking up siding from second story section that was ripped off by high winds. Very high winds!!!
Box is soaking wet, see if it will dry, otherwise replacement will be required. Had good tape on top and bottom. Contents all intact and dry. Will take closer look tonight or Saturday.

Insides was dry, and it was packed properly, with majority of items in bubble wrap or grouped in bags.
Box appears dry, but will test integrity before packing.

The box is repacked, yet open in case I decide to inspect the contents again. 🙄
Attached is what I removed,

Gerber box cutter, a couple dangles😜, some small S-Hooks, two lanyard lines, short and long, a Small Schrade Stockman, small AAA flashlight, and my grandson (another one) pondered between two MT tools for a few hours before selecting the bolster w/sheath.
Items added to supplement and keep box in balance for next trip.

He asked for opinion, I winked and told home it is his call, MTs are a very personal selection process. He asked to go upstairs, was gone about 20 minutes.
Came down, picked the Bolster. I asked why. He answered, “looked at your box, removed several from the sheaths and looked em over. You have a whole bunch of Leatherman and only 2 of this the brand. Obvious choice!”
I agreed to hold it for him until I did my selection pick. He will get this weekend. Unless I visit him early.

I like to spread cheer and sharing a quality item found at a bargain via this box is a good thing, or even a item caught my eye back yesteryear but not or barely used, knowing the next person or person after that may say I can use this…

So true and yet so funny. Originally, the box was just take something then pass on. No need to add unless you took more than 1 item. No the box has grown with people just adding, whether out of guilt or desire to gift what they aren’t using.

Aloha has been provided a tracking number and ETA as detailed on the receipt.
I will warn you, if wanting to receive, a good warning, plan time to UNWRAP and INSPECT the packaging thoroughly. There is lot to unpack and examine.
Then it takes maybe twice as long to rewrap and pack the box.
Some good stuff is in the box, 7lbs 5ozs of goodness.

I was looking at Pokka pens so this was my third pick. I didn't have a Canoe so this was so perfect for me. I also didn't have a Rough Rider so another perfect item for me. Very stoked with what I picked and very thankful for the generosity.
Catherine was also pretty excited as we opened the contents. Last time the box came to me she was pretty stoked but I didn't let her choose anything :-\.
She immediately saw the purple knife and claimed it. We wrestled for the Pokka pen but being an avid watcher of the early days of WWE my inner Randy Macho Man came out and I secured the win for it ;). She selected the metal pen which went promptly into her computer bag.
There you have it. I will send the box today after a delay due to weather. Priority mail should have it to the other side of the US fairly fast. I also added several items since we claimed several items.

Once she saw the purple knife it was hers. Her Spyderco Chaparral is her only other work knife but its grey, so purple gave her a huge smile. She works with a lot of men who carry knives but mostly black. She was super happy to have something "CUTE" as she called it. Pretty sure there will be a show and tell when she goes in the field next time. She sends out a huge thank you to the generosity of MTO.
I am stoked about the Canoe. I can we why this pattern is so loved. I should also give whomever put it in there a big :twak:. I've been on a few sites looking at Canoes :rofl:.
Thanks to all the fans of RR. I had no idea which one to get so I never picked one up. When I saw this I loved it immediately. Y'all know I love them small trads.
I added a several items since we took so many things out. Alan should have fun with his selections. Its hard thats for sure.
I love the randomness of whats inside.

I don't want to scare anyone, but I have already obtained a large flat rate box to replace the medium box because I owe some trade items to Farmer X in addition to whatever else is otherwise in the box and I wanted to make sure everything fits. Farmer X and IMR4198 don't need to feel obligated to continue to use the large box. So, who's next after Gary? Add your name to the list.

The knife is Viper Storm. I really hadn't looked at it as she took it and then went after the blue Pokka Pen :ahhh. I had to ask her to let me see the knife so I can see what it is. Kinda surprised she is pocketing it as its quite a bit heavy compared to her Spyderco. Shes got it in her pocket today as she left for work. :cheers: to who ever put it in the box.
I agree I should have given her a shot at the box when it came to me last time. Thats why I've suggested to let your significant others take a look in the box.

She's the "go to" for tools in her office. Her office kit is well appointed and curated over time. Normally they had to wait for a facilities person to come and repair or work on anything. I've taken time to familiarize her with tools so she can help herself and her office mates.
She/We have gifted many tools to her coworkers over the years as well. She's very stoked about the purple knife. I'm sure she'll get her manicure to match next time she's there. On site they wear safety vests and hard hats so she's clipped her Viper in her vest. She wanted to make sure her buddies saw it tho I'm pretty sure she's not going to wait. I tied a pink paracord lanyard to it but we'll get purple soon.
When she's in the office she cannot carry knives but anything goes in the field. Oddly she liked the weight in her vest. Normally she'd tell me she doesnt want anything to heavy. Guess purple makes is worth it. I talked a little about the knife with her so she could tell the fellas. She is very thankful for it. Whats funny is I try to buy her knives but she always says she's good. Her poor chaparral is gonna be neglected. Wonder if I can get my Grey Case Peanut back?

Not in the photo is a water bottle carrier with a pocket which my mom thought would be perfect for her day trips with her friends (they go to museums and gardens and such) when she doesn't want to carry her whole purse when all she really needs is a water bottle, her phone and her wallet. So, Mom said to thank whoever put that in there, and I thank whoever put in the rest.
As I mentioned before, I had to put everything in a large, flat rate box to accommodate the additional items that I included because I owed them to Dan from a trade we did last month, but the surprise box contents themselves do fit in a medium box.

Clockwise from top left, we see: a KeySmart Alltul (I think it's a T-Rex), a Craftsman pocket screwdriver, a Griffin Pocket Tool, a CRKT Civet, and a Camillus 41. The Civet's sheath will need a little work before it'll be ready to carry, but I look forward to trying it out. And I'll soon be requesting the OPT Collector badge.
Best of awl, the box has been re-packed and will be going to Gary tomorrow! I know, it was a fast turnaround, but I have to go to the Post Office tomorrow anyway, and I have to consolidate trips as much as possible.

It went coast to coast this last trip. Its a fun box and well worth the cost to ship to the next person. I loaded it up myself and I suspect it will continue to be loaded up tho not necessary.

There is a tiny settlement called Dillsboro about 20 miles across the mountain from where I live. An ancestor of mine was the first mayor there. The Dills family descendants live here. I also know the family of the man who delivered mail to Dillsboro from the town where I live.
I suppose the few families who lived in Dillsboro 130 years ago were pretty self-sufficient. But you couldn't grow everything. Coffee, salt, some other staples had to be freighted in. And the mail. Thomas did all that from here in a wagon pulled by two mules. No paved roads and a steep trip over the mountain. After delivering the goods and mail, Thomas would start on his long and weary trip home. He said he would go to sleep on the way back and would wake up when the mules stopped at his house. The mules knew the way. Thomas' great-grandson stops by to see me whenever he is in town. Mail by mule. True story.
That is my tedious story for today. Maybe I can tell of my adventure with Sherry's mystery box tomorrow. Or at least make something up. Best wishes. Gary

I imagine that I can probably pick it up Saturday morning. This was the first day that the package was in Franklin, so they couldn't have attempted to deliver it before today. I stood and waited at my rural mailbox and the mail truck (driven by a really cute young brunette) stopped when she saw me. I asked if she wanted me to sign for a package. She said she didn't bring it, because she never saw me at the mailbox. My house is no where near where you can see it from the mailbox. She handed me the brown claim ticket that she had filled out as 'package undeliverable' before she had even got there. Plus she didn't have the package on the truck. Hard to deliver what you didn't bring, right? I asked when I could get the package. She said anytime. Now.
Post office worker said, 'Sorry. Come back after 4 o'clock today or tomorrow between 9 and 12. The letter carrier shouldn't have told you that.'

I got this from the cute letter carrier. What do you do with it? Take it to the post office with some identification and claim your mail. The counter worker checks your ID, takes the receipt and fetches the mail. Then they keep the receipt and use it to log the transaction. You can also reschedule a delivery with the information on the receipt. I put the little SAKs on the package number and my address. No need to make that public.
So, I will take the receipt tomorrow and try to claim the package. We will see. Best wishes. Gary

The last time I waited for mail (from Dan) a bobcat almost ran into me. No bobcat today. I was a little bothered when I got back from the post office. I cooled down with a fan and a cold drink. Then I decided to mow. Cranked the Cub. Mowed a half hour. I was almost finished and something flashed by that caught my eye. A bear ran across my driveway. My fast turnaround was due to both having specific items in mind and needing to take a trip to the Post Office anyway. Definitely take your time deciding what you want to keep. As packed as that box is, it may not be an easy decision! And do your best to not trip over the local wildlife.
As for Shawn Bryson, the name doesn't ring any bells right off the top of my head. He might have left the Lions before I moved to Michigan.

I found one that is a keeper for sure. One of the first things I saw. It was lovely. A battered old 84mm Vic. Dirty. One scale split for 75% of its length. Glued together. Even the Vic shield was split in two. Liners stained and corroded. Couldn't sell it at a flea market for a dollar. Perfect. I wanted it as soon as I saw it and immediately set it aside as a keeper. I plan on using it to make some wood scales and try to rejuvenate it. I have some wood that is just a little short for a 91mm, but perfect for this old knife. It is the short version of a Spartan. Tourist or something, I forget.

The other Vic was glued together with old lube of some sort. I wiped WD40 on it and scraped it with a fingernail. That didn't take it off. Just like varnish. Finally, I soaked it in Dawn and warm water. Still sluggish. I don't care. Has anybody out there noticed how when the zip goes out of a SAK it is usually the layer that has the can opener and cap-lifter? I buffed the scales a little and cleaned it up some, so it doesn't look bad. No scales tools unfortunately.
Finally the Leatherman. I have never owned one. My pal Lee bought the first model when it was reviewed in Soldier of Fortune Magazine years ago. Had to have it. He carried it some, but I doubt if he ever took it out of the slim black pouch. That was the first and last Leatherman I ever had in my hand. Early 80's some time?
This is a Wagonman. Wait a second. Get my glasses. It is a Wingman. Not too big. I decided before the box came, that if there was a Leatherman of any type or condition that I would grab it. I want to own a Leatherman for one time.
My other wishes are for something Alox, and a 111mm. I have never seen or held either one in my life. Small town. Nobody sells them here. I bought my 108mm down in Dalton, Georgia years ago and they didn't have any more SAKs in that store either. Well, I will either find some, or I won't. I never order anything. Mail trouble, remember?

Some of you US residents have likely never seen a failed delivery receipt. If you are from Portugal or Aussie, of course this is all new.
I got this from the cute letter carrier. What do you do with it? Take it to the post office with some identification and claim your mail. The counter worker checks your ID, takes the receipt and fetches the mail. Then they keep the receipt and use it to log the transaction. You can also reschedule a delivery with the information on the receipt. I put the little SAKs on the package number and my address. No need to make that public.
So, I will take the receipt tomorrow and try to claim the package. We will see. Best wishes. Gary

I found a Tinker with see through red scales. Missing scale tools. Can opener and caplifter lazy. Got to push the tools shut. I will fiddle with it.
That might be the last. Oh yeah. I grabbed a Bijou. No key ring on these things makes them less practical to carry around. It was cute. And dirty. And lonely.
I will add some stuff. I think this is all. I'm not very good at packing things, but I will give it my best. Probably get down to the post office Thursday. Worlds of stuff still in the box. Its a no brainer for me. If it fits,,,,,,,, I have stuffed these boxes to where the clerk gives me a look,,,,,,,,,, it ships. The box is bulging with my duck tape strangling it like a boa constrictor.
Glad you found a few more things to keep. Scale tools are fairly priced and easy to come by as are small split rings. I replace the scale tools on any new to me SAK. I very good wash is also done on all new to me SAKs. Its surprising how much snap comes back to what looks to be well worn SAKs.
Glad you got your first LM. The Wingman was a first for me too. It hold a special place for me.

Some of the Bijou models are like a Classic SD, but without a keyring attachment. This one is like a regular Classic, without the keyring attachment. Maybe they intended them for use in a lady's handbag? They would work in a purse or hand clutch well. Keyrings are almost a must with 58mm models. Too easy to lose otherwise. I don't like keyrings on 91mm models and always take them off. They bother me and foul the back tools. Some people use them for a tassel or cord. I haven't really gotten into that. I did used to put a bootlace through the hole on my ubiquitous green knife when I went to the woods. You REALLY can't afford to lose your tools in the wilds. It also gave me a spare bootlace which wasn't a bad idea. Best wishes. Gary

@LC, she went to a conference over the weekend and she toted that cute purple knife the whole time. It was nice to share the contents with her as she's been terrifically supportive and quite the enabler over the years.
Its a fun process to lay out all the items and have a play with each. I'll have to take a look at our Aussie brethren to see how their box is doing.
Maybe they can move it along to others if they find it stalling like we did ours.

These are the items I kept:
Camo paracord - because I've been making a lot of lanyards lately and this is a color that I've not used. It should look great on my orange G10 Safari Hunter.
Kershaw Shuffle - because I tend to buy larger knives, and this one is truly handy for many tasks I don't need a large blade for, which is most things honestly.
91mm plus scales - because I refurbish a lot of used SAKs to give away to people, and these are in great, broken-in shape
Sharpie pen - because I always seem to have standard sharpies around and often I want one with a finer tip. This fits the bill!

One semi-honest multi-tooler type who needs to do hard work.
Duties are to sign up to be the next recipient of a ten pound box
of FREE pocket knives, tools, etc. Lots of good etc. items too. Apply within.
Seriously what do you need? You need to sign up and say, "Yes send me the box." Send a personal message to the current recipient and give him your mailing address. He will ship.
Look it over. Keep some stuff. Put something else back to take its place if you want. Box it back up. Take it to the Post Office. Costs $17.10 to ship a medium flat rate box. The Post Office has these boxes for free in racks. Also labels. All free. You will need a roll of shipping tape. I bought mine at Dollar Tree. Might get by using the old box if it is sturdy. Ship it to the next recipient. Make a post on Break Room section showing what you kept. Tell why if you like. Don't say what was in the box, or what you left. That's it. Free stuff. Sign up.

The rules of the game prevent me from stating what I saw in the box and what I added to the box. But I can say that you are likely to find some things you will want to keep. All you have to do is sign up and muster up the the required postage when it is time to send it on to someone else. As far as adding to the box goes, which I think may be a reason why some are hesistant to join in, no one will look down upon you if you only put in an item or two. Besides, we have so much in the box now no one even know ;).

I just used a very similar keychain screwdriver (mine has red plastic heads) the other day. A little big for actual keychain carry, but I leave them in my desk at work and use them once every month or two.

Yes! The original box grew so much that it had to be divided into 2 boxes, one of which was sent to Australia. The box that stayed behind has grown again. Almost everybody has put in more than they have taken out, though that is not a requirement.

The shipping isn't high. If you find one thing that you like it pays for the shipping, then and there. I have never seen anyone begrudge an item that someone kept from the box. Sometimes a recipient takes out something for the neighborhood kids. Bravo, I say. Or a little gift for a special person in their life. I like that too.
Is packing up the box, buying a little roll of shipping tape and taking the box to the post office such a chore? I go to the post office fairly regularly anyway, don't you? Don't want to take the responsibility? Have too much stuff already? If that's the case, then pack some of it in the box and let someone else enjoy.
Sherry started a very rare and unusual game here. I never would have thought of it. Others have pitched in and done their part in making this grow. Still the number playing this game are few. I just don't get it.

I wish samekind boxes would trip here in europe but i fear that postages would go pretty fast ridicilous prices ( cheapest packet to like Finland to Germany would cost 19.90€ and it doeant include warrant) also there might be customs even if sended inside europe, need to inform all products inside packet or it will be halted and need to pay hefty fines and worst case scenario lose items to state also.I would definitely be part of a European box, it did work on another forum a half a dozen of years ago. There are private companies that do very good prices (like, 5 euros), but only work in France, Benelux and Germany. Hopefully, one day, all of UE. But there isn't getting around having to inform the products. I'm sure most of the confiscated stuff ends up in someone's pocket though, don't know what the state would do with a box full of PSTs… :D

When I got the box for the first (and only) time, I hoped to get a Leatherman. My pal Lee (now deceased) ordered one of the first ones when he saw the article in Soldier of Fortune magazine. He thought it was great. I handled his Leatherman a little but that was all. So, I decided that I would like to have one. I got the Wingman out of the SoS box.
When I joined here, I had thoughts of getting something Alox (never seen or held one) or a 111mm of some sort. I decided to buy some 111s from a member, but figured it would just be more stuff accumulating.
Friend Aztec doesn't seem desperate to rid himself of the box. He has an out now with Poncho and a future connection with Looper. No need for me to get between. Best wishes. G

It's a lot of fun. Not really possible to send it to Canada, let alone Europe. Too many duties, restrictive laws about knives, etc. Does anybody know the status of the Australian box? Where is this thing? We have lots of active Aussies here. Seems like somebody should know. Is this thing sitting on top of a windmill at a cattle station? In the back of a ute?Exactly. Why don't you fellows have a Christmas mini-surprise box. Contact your other countrymen and make an agreement. Each of you puts a couple of items into a package for shipment within Finland only. A ships to B. B ships his box to C. C ships to A. Let everybody have some fun. Doesn't have to be multi-tools only. Post some photos, so everyone here can see.
No reason it wouldn't work in somewhere like France or Germany just as well. Lots of UK members here. Keep it in the home country. Good way to make friends. If we can do it here, you can do it there just as well.

IIRC, I have had the box stop at my location twice, and the 2nd visit I took my time reviewing the contents.
Interesting stuff in the box. Our fellow members that have stayed on the side lines have no idea what is passing by each time the box moves.
Kinda reminds me of me turning my nose up at mom’s banana bread, (I’m not a big fan of bananas back in my youth😉). Then one cold day, was shoveling the driveway, came inside to warm up, mom had just taken a couple loaves from the oven, and set next to two more that came out prior. My brother asked for a slice, mom sliced one, slathered it with butter and he started gobbling it down, and asked for a 2nd slice. I thought, that looked mighty good and requested to try a slice too! Mom looked perplexed and gave me one as well.
My first taste, well, was not my last. And to imagine I had been passing up on this tasteful treasure for 15 years…

Anything to kill the boredom. It is raining and cold here. Probably be ice frozen on stuff tomorrow. Anytime there is icy weather, the electricity goes off. Leftover ham is tops for bean cooking. Unfortunately I don't have any. I am thinking about buying some smoked hog jowls and maybe some black-eyed peas. I had some yellow split peas just last week. Mmmm. My last corn bread was definitely sub-par. It wasn't wasted. The raccoons didn't mind a bit. Country boys all know what's good, don't we Looper? Best wishes. G

Catherine is still very much enjoying the purple knife. She gets to carry it when out in the field for work. She like the weight of it so she knows its still with her. I've carried it once or twice now and its does have some weight. I wouldn't say it's heavy but one will know its there.

Only this week, the nice people from Duke Power sent two husky fellows by to say hello. It seems they were taking donations for something or other. They asked if I had been getting their letters. I told them of course I had, and kept a nice neat stack of their correspondence. They were embarrassed to ask for their fund raising thingie, but I gave them each a piece of leftover Halloween candy and a hundred dollar bill for their good cause. They seemed relieved and took their wrenches down from the fish bowl looking thing on my porch. You know how men love to show their tools. These guys are ready for anything. Now on to the Sos box. I happened to check the online tracking again this afternoon about 2:15PM. The tracking said the package was available for pickup at the post office. TODAY! There would be a ticket in my mail.
No ticket. So, I decided to drive to the post office anyway. The lady who was behind the counter and wouldn't let me have the box last time broke into a huge smile when she saw me. I think she teared up a little, but that may be my imagination. I though, what the...? Then I saw. I picked up the shipment and went outside to take a photo.
Scuffing her little shoes on the sidewalk outside was a little girl staring at me. I asked her if she had a dolly? She nodded yes. I asked if she had a kitty or a puppy? She shook her head. That touched my heart, so I gave her a gift.

No wonder I couldn't rest last night. I dreamed I was in a cramped restaurant. In Canada. Someone lit a cigar. A real Stinkola one. Then other people started smoking cigarettes. I couldn't breathe. I put my head under a table cloth, and someone handed me an inhaler, but it was stopped up. Then I started asking people to stop smoking. Some did. I took the cigarettes away from some people and stubbed them out. Then I pushed the cigar smoker out of a window. I figured I had better leave, and ran into a man who died last week here. Used to run a camera shop. I gave him a hug.
When I woke up, I was wound up in the covers like a cocoon. I took a test sniff to see if the house was on fire. It wasn't. Best wishes. Gary

1) Leatherman Bolster It seems this is a Costco special, or at least it used to be. It is sort of like a Rev. I figured if I was going to go down the Leatherman trail I might as well have one
more.
2) Case peanut. Pretty little thing. I think I will let my brother in law have it. It was in the box
last time I had it. The Case box is with it but has taken a beating from being shipped and jostled.
3) Victorinox Bijou. This one was in the box before also. I cleaned it up and sharpened it. Might need a spare for the Classic etc. challenge. I might wear one of my other 58mm out
while splitting rails or shoeing horses or something.
I have been using a sharpening steel that was in the box. I might end up keeping it. I will let everyone know. I haven't looked everything over very well just yet. Will I be shipping it soon? Doesn't look like it. LoopCutter and I have been talking things over. He has some things he has to do and asked me to see if anyone else wanted to be next in line after me. I decided not to be in a rush to do anything soon. So, if I have to keep the box a while, that will be fine. I think that little Bijou had the dullest blade I have ever seen on a SAK. And the sharpest scissors. I might just have to put it in the zippered up bib front pocket. I tend to lose things. My second career working parking construction, after my first week cutting concrete on a garage project, I returned with bibs in my truck.
Would slip on and go to work. A pocket for awl my essential tools, end of day legs coated in concrete dust, slip them off, beat the dust off, and I was good to go for a dress up affair!😁
Old dog with new tricks😁. Soon a fashion style at job site. There were 40 contractors on site, about 6,000 laborers and about 5% in bibs doing most of the work, awl were grey hairs🔥

I tried that honesteel out on an Old Hickory boning knife. Worked great. The knife is ancient, but one of my favorite cutting up meat tools. The Schrade honesteel has been around the block a few times, too. Best wishes. G

Here's my loot (with the Classic from the Classic challenge).
1. My stepdaughter wanted the mini Paraframe since her sister has a full size one.
2. And the Escort, since she likes small knives for small hands.
3. My wife was looking for a headlamp for crafting, so that worked out great.
4. And I took the Marbles GI Jack. This has been on my "nice, but not bothering to buy it" list for a while. Sometimes it's nice to just carry something basic.

1. If you had the box in the past, both the quality and variety of items has increased substantially since I last had it in the spring. Plenty of brand name (even some discontinued stuff from brands gone by) stuff, and even a few semi-custom jobs.
2. My wife is thinking of starting a similar box for these bottlecaps she gets from a podcast. We're trend setters!

I used to have one of those watches when I was kid. I had one that you could put phone numbers in too.
I have that one also. At some point, I'll probably get around to grabbing all the current databanks. They're great conversation pieces, and having a "normal" watch is surprisingly handy for traveling (did my phone change time zones? what time zone are we in now? we're on ship time, which is different than local time, etc.) I think we spent as much time talking about it as the job at my last interview. I don't know if I got the job because they liked the watch, or they already had me locked and just wanted to talk about it, but it was nice either way.

Just so the newcomers know, you DON'T post a photo of what is in the box when you get it or when you ship it. That spoils the surprise element. Also, you MUST post a photo of the items you keep. Shipping by priority mail is the quickest, cheapest, safest way to do it. Boxes and labels are free at any post office. Insurance for $100 is also free with priority mail. If you want extra insurance, that is up to you. You will need a roll of packing tape. Walmart, Dollar Tree, whatever. The wide, clear kind is best. Have fun. Best wishes. Gary

The problem was the box never got emptied because everyone who got it added to it until it grew so much it was divided into 2 medium priority boxes one of which was sent overseas as the down under edition. They've both been moving steadily now for 2 or 3 years and many of us are repeat customers because it's so much fun seeing what's been added to the box since the last time you saw it. :cheers:I can't wait to add unique pieces to it.

Yep, no battery in it, I'll have to pick one up. I've already taken apart the red SAK. Cleaned all the corrosion off everything and cut out some brass scales. The original red scales are in pretty rough shape. Thinking about Acid Etching the tools too.

I know your time is special and attending to other important interests! You could appoint a trustee! Someone who monitors the site regularly and might find a member, new or establish with a need and then fill that need. Anonymously, or, with credit.
The box is a shot gun approach, of take and give.
The manner I purpose would be a more precision approach for gift directing. And could have a “PAY IT FORWARD” vibe.
This can include GAWs as well. For donations toward Operating Fund or Challenges.

That is a generous thought. Of course that would mean that the shipping debt for whoever gets the box would be greater not to mention keeping track of two boxes. The present medium flat rate box seems to be pretty full now.
One of the biggest problems with the box is a surplus of supply and a shortage of participation. I figured that sometime or other something is going to happen to the box. Lost in transit. Theft. Something. Another member and I had a discussion of perhaps scaring up enough odds and ends to create a new box in the event of fraud, accident, or shipping failure. Perhaps that might be a way to help fill a new surprise box. Of course, the need may never arise. If it does it could also be a ways down the road.
Until more of our regular members (and I don't mean someone who joins just to get the box) participate in the exchange program I think the whole thing will slowly grind to a halt. It did that in Aussie for a long time and seems to be stalled again down under. I heard where there was some communication about that branch of the surprise box, then nothing. There seems to be little enthusiasm on either side of the ocean actually. Surprising if you think about it. Best wishes. G

Good idea but pretty much impossible. How about the European MTo contingent putting together a Surprise Box on your own? Trade it around over there. It started with Sherry just putting a handful of nice things in a box on her own and sending it. It could work there.
A box of mixed things from the US with new and used items of all sorts would be quite a task to get through taxation and customs. Not worth the trouble. Especially since it would likely be confiscated. I can see a French box working maybe with shipments within country. Or Finnish box? The US box started small. No reason you couldn't start one on a small scale over there. Best wishes. G

I remember friend Antti sent an item to Frenchephaistos recently. We have several Finnish members who could potentially be part of the game. If anything could be sent from Finland to France (you already know, Antti), the box could circulate around France and maybe some neighboring countries. Depending on shipping and laws. There are lots of UK members, but their new shipping laws might not allow entry.
Find out what works. Put together a few things and see who wants to receive the box and then pass it on. If nobody does it first, it won't happen. It could be done satisfactorily with just items like I mentioned and NO knives at all. Best wishes. G

A possible work around would be personal transport and handoff amongst members. Norway, Sweden, Rnglsnd and Ireland will require ferry transport.

Send it to Europe to get some new interest in the box ? It's just I wouldn't know how to get it overseas without problems. However, if it was available here, I'm pretty sure we could get quite a few people involved. :DThe EU box was considered at the same time one was sent to the Aussies, but there was a lot of concern between violating laws and VAT potentially making it not worth it.
If there was enough interest and someone who would be willing to ensure what was sent was legal and willing to pay VAT, I’m sure between some of the items currently in the box and a few additional items we could send out a small start-up box that I’d be willing to have shipped.

GAW is not a bad idea. You could also sign up for the box, invite some family and friends to each pick something out of the box, then add to the box what you'd like to send out?A few others have done this and I think it is a great idea. You get to possibly spark some interest in our hobby and share the generosity, while passing on some of your no longer used items.

So anyone who ships the SoS surprise box will now need an extra buck thirty. On the plus side, you can sit there and giggle about how the last person to hold the box had to shell out the extra money to get it to you.
Of course, if you need a new box to ship, the boxes are still free. Pick them up at the post office. There are two types of medium priority flat rate boxes. A long flat one that opens on one end, and one that opens on top. They hold the same amount, but the one that folds up to make a box that opens on top is easier to pack. Best wishes. G

I tested it on a bottle last night and it worked perfectly.

Cleaned up all the dings in the tools by working my way up to 2000 grit sand paper and then hit them with some Flitz. Sharpened the blade to razor sharp. Also worked on the rivets to tighten them, no more play in the tools or pliers. Thank you to who ever donated it! It will definitely get used!

By the way, I was at my local post office yesterday to pick up a package. The new rate for the surprise box shipping (Priority Rate Medium Flat Rate Box) is now $18.40. For those who don't know that includes a $100 insurance on the box and a 3 day or so arrival time. At the time of shipping, the sender gets a ticket with a tracking number. That number should be sent to the new recipient. A PM is the easy way to do that.
