Folks, Remade Knives just decided to release its 91mm scale 3D model for the public to print as much scales as one wants. I contacted a local 3D printer and said he can produce a set of 91mm scales at $2 each using plastic, and $3 using carbon fiber for a minimum order of 11 and 15 sets respectively.
What do you think are the pros and cons of doing this? ???

Do these have slots for scale tools?

Yes, see actual scales shared with me. Last I heard an updated design is in the works, with tighter tolerance

They look great! Love the orange. If any UK members are up for a group buy let me know.

Im actually organizing a group buy in my country as some said its worth the risk to try it out here. The guy with the 3D printer I contacted said he can even do wood. But he hasn't worked with SAKs before so I have some concerns.... :-\
-
Great idea and definitely worth looking into, though the shipping costs out of country will greatly diminish the pricing paradigm. But I like the concept! :like:

I wouldn't be too worried about him being SAK experienced or not. The primary concern in additive manufacturing is whether or not their machine and the way they operate it can produce parts to tolerance and to the best mechanical properties of the material :tu:
much like a machinist, if you give them good data to produce a part and they do their job well on decent equipment, you'll get a very functional end product.

The Boss has a 3D printer :pok:

Those orange scales do look great...

I downloaded it.
Haven't got a 3D printer but you never know when it may come in handy.
And don't want to risk it going offline again soon :D
-
I'm in for a couple ... Do you need all at once.. is there a sample, a pallette of colours etc.?
In for both carbon fiber and plastic.
Note Czech to Romania should be cheap to ship and most importantly, no customs.
Ow... scratch that.. I misstook the Phillipine flag for Czech.. darn...
Well.. if UK group order, I'm in.. if not...

I'll be posting regular updates here guys about this group buy project here in my country. If our plan pushes through, I'll also be ordering a few extras so I can do my own GAW here :SAKnight:

Shotgun!
-
Looks good guys :tu:
That's great news for the guys who love the customized sak's
Personally I won't be interested because as much as customized sak's look good and interesting to look at, as far as cellidor sak's go for me there is only one color and material, classic red cellidor :D

If only Victorinox sells their scales locally but they refuse to. My guess is Victorinox (or their country distributor here) prefer that customers buy new SAKs rather than install new scales :twak:

I also heard SwissBianco said in his video that while his scales are CNC milled, the SAK frames are not and rivets might need adjustments. So I'm concerned that the plastic chosen by the printer might be brittle (?). So now I'm curious to know what exact plastic material to ask. I'll discuss with the printer.
As for the carbon fiber, here are the samples he gave

The most popular materials for hobbyist FDM printing are ABS plastic (think Lego blocks) and PLA (a biodegradable plastic). However, the range of potential materials is huge. If it's a SLS or UV curing material, you can get much finer results. But at such a low price, I can only guess at what sort of machine he's using. Most inexpensive machines and materials are done on FDM.

Can you cull out from his album whether he's using FDM? What material is appropriate for SAK use?

It looks to me like FDM is the technology he's using to print, looks like a really good surface quality. So he's using a machine that gives a really nice surface quality. As for the material... no idea. PLA would be bad for an SAK, but ABS would work fine. Nylon, or even Polycarbonate may be suitable as well. They all look really well made, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a set if I was in the market. It couldn't hurt to write him and ask what the material is!
-
Very cool thread 8) The carbon fiber looks awesome :o The plastic look pretty good to me as well though :like: I may download the specs and see if I can find a local printer :tu: If not I will still have the specs for later use  :like:

This is very helpful information and tips! I will definitely refer to this thread when I order from him. Right now our group is just waiting for one more willing "guinea pig" to jump into the group buy wagon.
Thank you so much! :tu:

Any time! I geek out over this stuff. If I can get the models to clean up nicely for slicing I'd love to make a set in nylon at work. The B side handle just has too many shells and the software for our machine doesn't like it one bit.

Update: I showed your post to our supplier. Our supplier was supposed to use PLA but after reading this post, he agreed to use ABS instead at the same cost. Here's his business page:

I'm now finalizing the group buy with members. If all agree, we can have the scales delivered next week. And the GAW here soon after

That's awesome of him!
PLA is a fine material if it's properties suit your application. However, it is biodegradable and UV light damages it ( ibelieve.. further research required). it is more brittle than ABS and is prone to warping under high temperatures (think 115degrees Fahrenheit and up) so even a hot car on a summer day could do it. I find it better suited to desktop models, toys/gamepieces, and some prototyping work.

Yes, at the price point, they're excellent value for money. For me, I'll install as is while others plan to wet sand theirs. Can't wait for the weekend to install these

Some group mates will polish and color their scales. I'll post here after they do.
Is anyone interested to have an ABS and Composite Fiber scales as GAW here?

My teeth start itching when I look at those scales. :ahhh
Yes, you read that correctly... :D
Maybe something along these lines: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trypophobia
Otherwise they look nice.

:tu:
They look thicker than the cellidor scales an0nemus. Are they? Have you tried them with the toothpick and tweezers yet?
Sorry for the poor pic quality. Grey Golfer next to Blue Tinker. The T&T needed to be forced in and won't extract smoothly. Sanding the channels might help

Just an update folks. Some in Facebook and a friend who saw the scales said the grey ones don't look like carbon fiber. So I asked the guy who printed the scales and he said they're technically carbon fiber filaments, or a composite of resin and CF. "It's milled CF with plastic as the resin. It's similar to glass filled plastic" are his own words.
Its a relatively new material being used by drones and car parts. He likes the material because it doesn't warp. Its also being used by his friend Ryan in Ryan's business here: https://www.gearswitch.us/collections/e30-cup-holder
Just wanted to put this info here.
On a related note, the GAW has been launched here: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=73921.new;topicseen#new

Ya you wouldnt be able to print in CF since its layers of carbon cloth compressed and cured with some variant of polyester resins. I got into making CF bike frames for a bit about 15 years ago. Kind of fun you carve out a shape in high density foam then do lay ups of the cloth/resin.

What my friend (who's into building CF frames for airguns) essentially said as well who inspected the scales with his flashlight. He's also into CNC and lasers and we discussed Titanium scales. He mentioned aluminum T3 as alternative scales. What do you think of T3?

Another groupmate just successfully installed the grey scales on his Spartan

It does
We're having problem with the ABS, though. It didn't feel smoothly with that particular Spartan. We're still looking for the cause.

Sand it down a bit with a fine sanding paper?
Circular movement.

I mean it didn't fit in smoothly. One of the scale hole is allegedly 1mm off. Might be ABS shrinkage

My friend just installed his CF filament scales on his Spartan. He wet-sanded using 800 then 600 grits but the material didn't budge. LOL.

Just want to share a happy moment. One of our group mates finally decided to replace the beaten scales on his SwissChamp of more than 20 years. He's so happy that they fit as the rods seemed bent. It's like having second life, he said

Just a mention on Carbon Fiber Printing: It IS possible by two means so far... laser sintering and filament-deposition modeling. However they're so far only done in very costly machines as managing the lay of the fibers gets tricky. I don't think we're going to be seeing this tech in hobby machines for some time. However, it is doable!
-
As far as my forays in 3D-printing-related fora have uncovered, "CF filament" is available for use in "hobby" FDM printers, but with the caveat that extruder nozzles tend to get an accelerated abrasion treatment by the fibres which makes the nozzles far less durable - unless they are e.g. stainless steel or a special harder-than-usual copper alloy.
-
I get conflicting opinions also about the CF nature of these scales. Whatever it is, it's tough. Even a group mate's effort to use dremel and smoothen it was disastrous

That looks melted. A Dremel is much too high rpm to use with plastics like that. I'd try hand sansing with 400 then 800 grit wet paper to smooth out the surface.

A friend tried down to 600 but nothing happened. I'll recommend 400.
For me personally, I like mine unsanded as it has rough appeal

I might be wrong but it looks like the material he used to print the scales is a mix of carbon fiber and PLA ( a type of biodegradable plastic) which does not take heat well. i would recommend next time getting them printed in ABS or nylon, and to make sure that the person printing the scales uses a smaller print nozzle

Feedback to a related question by me in a 3D printing forum suggests that CF holding filament should be printed with at the smallest a 0.5, or better 0.6, mm nozzle...

He did say it CF were added in the material. So it might be as you described. Two sets were printed, one with ABS and one with CF filament. Todate, no one has tried putting on the ABS yet as all of us are fascinated by the "CF" scales :D

Admittedly, the first batch were of better quality than the 2nd batch. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the nozzle used. But I'll share with him your feedback, DT. Helpful, as usual. Thanks!

Grabbed a set from them on Etsy. Put on my Tinker that had been blacked out by syph007, for the previous owner...

I have these files and there is some kind of "error" in the STL file, and it has a few stray bits that shouldn't be there. Then other error is that the back scale has several pieces and it makes it basically impossible to modify (I was planning on adding a pin hole like the Plus scales have). I tried importing it into a few different programs and exporti g it again but always have the same "errors" that make it tough to modify. Maybe they did that on purpose, to protect their IP, although they seems fine with people using it.
Anyone else have trouble with this?
