A recent El Corkscrew thread [Olé, Inlay! (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,71309.0.html)] touched on promotional or advertising SAK's. This thread got me thinking a bit, and I have to confess having some ambivalence about these kinds knives.
The purist in me thinks that all Celidor SAK's should be Red, and all Alox SAK's should be silver/plain aluminum. But....I kinda dig the references to older companies and special edition knives designed to commemorate events or groups. And I love all the pretty colors of Alox that show up here. I have way more colored Alox knives than silver.
When I saw this L.L. Bean SAK, it made me smile and I decided to pick one up. It's not historic in any way, but I have some positive associations with L.L. Bean, both the man and the company, and so I splurged on it. Plus the Camper is one of my favorite models. I'll actually use it. And a knife that makes you smile can't be all bad. :D
I'm curious to know what y'awl think about these. Cast a vote or just sound off in the comments! Thanks!

I have a wide variety of SAKs with logos. Particularly like locality and transportation-themed knives. Also Scouts and military. Outdoors organizations and retailers also fit in. Sometimes its the only way to get a certain model. Sometimes they just look neat.

:think: Good question. I think I'd avoid the "papal" knives, as carrying a knife for something political or religious where you're not part of the club (i.e. I'm not catholic) somehow doesn't sit right with me. Pretty theoretical, though, as they're not exactly generally available. :D

I tend not to collect medical ads. Outside of the Marlboros (special models), I also avoid tobacco products.

I think they're cool for exactly the reasons you've brought up. You can find all kinds of cool logos and emblems and maybe have a connection to one of them. Both of my edc Soldiers have ads on the blades, one is etched and one is some kind of barely visible print.
Overall though, I prefer the original Victorinox inlays.

When I saw it I had to have it! Camo,LLBean and I love Campers so ya it putts a smile on my face.

I generally don't do logos on anything unless it's a company that I really like. Meaning, I have to have their products or really admire their products.
For example, I may wear or use something with "Fender" on it because I like their guitars, basses, and amp. I'd wear or display "Victorinox" or the shield because i use and love their products. Of course, I'll proudly display US Army symbols and logos because I'm part of that and it's special to me. A store like Cabela's or a beverage or whatever...no way. Too general and not special to me.
I'm not really into logos.

I love coloured sak, and sometimes, promotional ones.
Red is right, but for me coloured is better.

I do have a couple of knives with branding, and they still get used, but I do prefer tools without branding. It obviously doesn't affect performance, but I do find it somewhat tacky, so I prefer plainer versions where possible. It doesn't have to be red, but I'd rather it didn't have advertising on unless it's something I particularly want to support or be associated with. I think one of the reasons I sold my first Sideclip was that it was branded. I have given away some branded knives, and sanded off the screen printing on others. Camo is another no-no for me. We all have different tastes, there is no right or wrong answer.

Regardless of anything else, i'll always prefer plain factory stock classic red sak's over anything else :salute:

I'm in the MEH who cares, just use it camp. I couldn't care what it has printed on it as long as it's a usable tool. It's cheap and easy enough to change scales to non branded ones if you don't like them.

So the rarity of a knife makes it more special? I guess so. I suspect many companies like to offer branded or promotional SAK's in an effort to 'borrow by association' the perception of quality attributed to SAK's. In that sense, branding a SAK is an acknowledgement of the quality of all SAK's. And I think that kind of endorsement is fun.

Many times they sell for very high prices (I know, sometimes you can have a bargain).
