Title: Electrician vs pioneer x
Post by: armi101 on September 12, 2017, 07:22:22 AM
Forgive me if this has been posed before. I searched the forum but didn't come up with something specific.

I've  been a long time lurker. Joined a few weeks ago when I came across a couple 2003 alox soldier nib on the shelf in a store for 36 canadian, and wanted some opinion. Here we are again.

Ive been trying to decide on a  new sak. And searched for a comparison/opinion for between the alox electrician vs alox pioneer x.

I'm really in the fence. And before anyone says get a farmer, I have one. With all the camping, hiking, backpacking, bushcrafting, hunting, and fising I do, I have never used the saw. There is always an axe, hatchet, or real saw nearby to use, and the sak saw stays in my pocket.......it still has rough edges from the manufacturer.

Both tools seem very useful. But I'm stuck. Small blade seems like a good idea and I could keep it razor sharp. Great for boxes or regular daily tasks. However the large blade can do everything through small blade and more, and I sharpen regularly. The scissors seem more useful.

If your up for it. Let me know what you think.

I vote X.

And suggest a Rally as a compliment.

ELECTRICIAN

The blade shape of the electricians blade is a useful compliment to the normal spearpoint. The sheepsfoot with chisel grind is awesome!  :tu: :tu:

Tasks that require scissors most of the time I can accomplish with a blade, just fine. The small flat is nice although I have zero use for a can opener besides that.

Also the comparison here is between a 2 layer electrician to a 3 layer pioneer x, so keep that in mind too.

My 2 pennies  :tu:

Also, I've seen a pioneer x with the can opener swapped for the e-blade. It was super sweet  :gimme:

Yep, Electrician X would be my choice.   :dd:  I like a small blade (more agile, a bit more discreet)  - and the sheepsfoot blade is a good one.

Or pair the Electrician with a Leatherman Style CS orVictorinox Rambler.

Based on the way you've presented your own assessment of the tools, I'd say you're leaning toward the Pioneer X (scissors).

You seem to view the small blade and large blade as nearly the same with the large blade having a slight edge (no pun intended) over the small. So the only significantly different tool available is the scissors.

I think you'll find the scissors more in demand than either a saw or a knife blade in most cases. I'd get the Pioneer X

Pioneer X

I don't see the advantage of two blades over a blade and scissors.

While a knife can accomplish many of the things scissors can do, scissors are often handier and more precise. There is a reason scissors are both ubiquitous and come in hundreds of designs.

When rigging up fishing gear, I prefer scissors to trim knots, trim flies, cut line, etc.... Sure a knife can do these things, but scissors can do them one handed and more neatly.

I defy anyone to go outside on a hot and sandy trail and neatly trim a piece of moleskin for a blister with a knife. A simple task for scissors. With scissors, one can accurately 'push cut' cloth, tape, and some bandaging materials (some will bunch up). A knife can't do these things in the same manner, especially out in the bush.

I like having a saw blade on a SAK, but you are right that it doesn't get used all that much, it's more of a 'what if' tool. Especially if you already have a folding saw or axe handy.
So, If I'm going to have one tool in a SAK, make it a knife. But a second tool....scissors!  (http://www.pic4ever.com/images/uglydance.gif)

Of course, you could always go with the Fieldmaster!  :pok:

Ahh..I forgot....other uses where scissors just work better:

You can also use just one of the scissors blades as a small blade. Couldn't stand very hard tasks, like the electrician's small blade, but it would do the job, if need be. As a last resort, you still have the large blade.

So... X it is!

^^THIS because while a knife blade can do many things scissors can do, it requires a cutting board of some sort. Scissors is a stand-alone tool (although that sentence may not have been proper grammar).

Thanks for the comments. After reading there are some good points for either electrician or the pioneer x. But I think a really good point is that the scissors are really stand alone. I do think the electrician would be useful around the house doing repairs, or even when at work, but the scissors would come in more handy. So, I ordered the pioneer x today from that auction site.

I really think a pioneer x, modded to add an electrician blade, and loosing the can opener would be great.

I have already ordered a explorer to try and make a yeoman for my first mod. If it works out maybe I'll try and mod an alox with anew electrician blade. Lots of information on the site to complete the mod. Just need the time.

Cheers

Ahh..I forgot....other uses where scissors just work better:

  • trim finger nails
  • trim beard/moustache/nose hair
  • cut nylon repair patch for smurfing leaky air mattress so you don't wake up on the smurfing freezing hard ground
  • cut open the last tea bag to split remaining tea with forgetful and now shivering camping partner
If we're talking about things that just work better; fingernail clippers and a beard trimmer definitley come to mind  ;)

but I see your angle and agree with what you said  :tu:

You are so right! I was thinking of when I'm out on a camping or motorcycle trip and the beard trimmer and nail clippers get left at home. A SAK with scissors never gets left at home!  :D

Well. Playing devils advocate here for fun, I can usually "tuff" it out on a camping trip to go a few days without trimming my beard, and my nails don't grow much overnight. lol     :D

In all honesty. Your points have made me reconsider my opinion. I'm firmly now in the pioneer Electrician x camp, syph can we get a sfo on those   :gimme:

Pioneer X! Carry mine daily.

Scissors are just a must-have in an urban environment, for all the reasons mentioned already. I also like the large scissors to cut zip-ties and blister packs, which I normally find akward to cut safely with a knife, especially around people.

I pair it with a Rambler, for small grooming tasks like nails, beard, toothpick etc. Such an excellent combo.

So I spent a few hours last night reading about mods for alox. I think the torx screws look awesome. Plus, I'm pretty sure i can add some scissors to the electrician with some small effort.

I found a fee way back in some old posts that are truly impressive.  If I was to really dream I'd want a alox explorer. Somehow with plus scales.

Or, maybe a special custom for exactly the tools I want...so much to do.  I spent a bunch of time on the auction site window shopping for mod fodder.....at lest i know what it will cost me now.

In quickly re-reading through this thread, I didn't see where we asked you what you are planning to use the SAK for.

I'd think if you're using this for wiring like an electrician, you'd want to have scissors, the electrician blade, and pliers in the SAK.

I use a sak as an edc. It gets used for cutting paper, post tension cable sheathing, scraping coatings, checking damage and rot in wood. So the knife gets used, cap lifter,  and awl. It has been a great companion.

At home, I use it when doing home repairs. But only when the appropriate tool is not at arms reach.

When out in the woods I nearly always have a belt knife,  and axe so the sak is mainly for food preparation.  Hiking it is probably the only knife I'll take. Fishing I use a original leatherman wave, and never carry a sak. Hunting i will take a sak in a pocket as a backup knife.

So as in the earlier post, I don't use the can opener ever. I am,  now anxiously waiting for the pioneer x. Should be good.
