Title: Wanted: a few brave souls.
Post by: Nix on September 13, 2017, 06:15:13 PM
I have this crazy idea to attempt the Minimalist Challenge using only the Executive. Yes, the SAK I ridiculed and now own. Let's call it a penance. I'm thinking of it as the General Yeager Challenge.

I'd like the moral support of a few brave souls. Swiss Army Knights brave enough to attempt the challenge with me. We'll start a thread and do the 30-days together, all carrying/using exclusively an Executive and no other knives. (http://www.pic4ever.com/images/230.gif)

If you've already done the Minimalist challenge, you'd be doing it for the honor, the glory, and the fame. If you haven't done the Minimalist challenge, you'd be doing it for the honor, the glory, and the fame and a badge.  :D

If you don't already have an Executive, we can set the start date a week or so out in the future to allow time to acquire one. If you already have an Executive...well, I know you've considered this idea already.

In the next month or so I have a bunch of stuff planned, including a road trip to Texas and back. It seems like a good time to do this and check out General Yeager's favorite knife. Anybody else willing to give this a shot with me?

I could try that. Most of my knife use is for food prep. Also, having two blades makes it capable of other tasks.

My only worry is that if I go through with it and get used to only carry the Executive, I'll end up leaving all my other babies at home forever.

Seriously though the hardest part of any 30 day challenge for me would be actually taking and posting photos every day for 30 days.

I'd probably do it, but the pics wouldn't be very different from day to day...

I love the Executive, I really do. I have a red one, a black one, and a Director (that's an Executive with stainless steel scales). A long time ago, when I was an office worker still, the Executive was my EDC knife, with the company of a SwissChamp. But never would I carry an Executive only. Even though I could do the challenge, because the tools I use most are dedicated pruning shears and folding saw, I like to carry about a dozen SAKs (even if some redundancy is introduced). The minimalist concept just isn't for me.

I did this very thing a couple years ago on a trip to California. I was concerned about recent knife law changes, and survived almost two weeks and 3,000 road trip miles.

Would I do it again? Could be...B-)

Mine is old enough to have a screw in the scissors, and no guide slot for the spring. The spring flips out from under the handle and drives me crazy. If I can put up with that, then I'm in. It would make room for a larger flashlight on my dangler too. Hmm... I wonder what new light I can get.

I love these minimalist challenges and I support you in your endeavor, even though I really don't like the exec own one.

For twenty years I've been using a classic, replacing them about ev era 8 years as I wear them out. I do realize the value and validation of the General Yeager aspect. Most times you need a knife, a small blade like a exec, classic, box cutter, or exact knife will do.

Over the course of all these years, my experience in life and with what is NOT really needed has resulted in my selling off/giving away of most of my knife collection. Going about my life in American suburbia, I've found that I rarely need more blade than a 58/74mm SAK. Even my appreciation over the years of my old army issue P-38 can open and Sears 4-way keychain screw driver has caused me to forsake most SAK's as those two tools do away with one whole layer of a recruit or tinker.

But I will give you all the moral support a Knight Of the Swiss Army deserves for going minimalist.  :tu: :tu: :tu:

Maybe I'll go find an exec someplace and join you. But I love the 58mm's soooo much!

Yes! Hey, I love my Classics and usually carry one daily. But this type of challenge is designed to expand our horizons and deepen our SAK knowledge. Get an Executive and join us!

 :SAKnight:

What do you guys think about a start date of 01 Oct 2017 for this challenge? Nice opening number and it gives some people time to get an Executive. That work for everybody? Might even give Poncho a chance to join in.  ;)

I have attempted these challenges before, and bailed out. The only one I ever completed was the "anything goes" one that we just did for the Anniversary. Long ago I decided the challenge months were not for me, but I do enjoy watching everyone else struggle  >:D Besides which, I am planning on dismantling my Exec and rebuilding it in a different configuration. You guys will have my support, and I will be interested to see how you get on, but I will be an interested observer only

Good luck to all who participate  :salute:

I've got a Biomet branded (inlaid metal) one I think I could carry for a month straight. The blades are big enough to where it doesn't need another folder with it. I really didn't even like the Executive until this one came with a bunch of others. My only complaint is that the SD tip of the orange peeler really can't withstand much.
Title: Re: Wanted: a few brave souls.
Post by: fivesense on September 14, 2017, 03:49:44 AM
I'll do the Executive challenge, if I can carry my Swiss Champ too.  :climber:

Just kidding- I could get by with the Executive, and probably pretty easily for 95% of regular ol' every day tasks. My issue is that I really like carrying the Swiss Champ because of the extra tools. Yes- I understand the point of the minimalist exercise, but having so many tools in one package just makes for a lot of fun and enjoyment.

Question- during these minimalist challenges, does one get to keep carrying their other knives, like their Spydercos, etc..? Or is this literally you only get to carry whichever SAK? I'm sure I know the answer but as someone who loves my knives and tools, I just don't think I could do it! Which is funny because I'm a proponent of minimalism in general, which is one reason I carry a SAK in the first place. And a Spyderco. And a Mora. And a SA/DA semi auto. And a J-frame revolver.

Oh heck. Who am I kidding...
Title: Re: Wanted: a few brave souls.
Post by: Nix on September 14, 2017, 04:05:20 AM
If I can do it, you CAN do it.  :tu:

Carry the Executive. Carry a Spydie. Carry a J-frame. BUT, only use the Executive. Obviously, in an emergency, use whatever tool needs to be used to save life, limb, sight, or anything else critical. BUT, if you use something other than the Executive, report & explain. There's no way you are going to use an Executive to change a flat tire. If you decide to field dress a Wildebeest, culled with a spear, using a big ol' fixed blade, you'll need to explain why the Executive wasn't up to the job. (Or was it?) That way, we'll all learn a bit.

I hear your reservations--right at the moment I'm sporting 3 knives myself--but the point is to stretch both your and the Executive's abilities limits. Join us and let's see what this little SAK can do!

I suppose the first step would be me purchasing an Executive.

Hello, Amazon? I've got four hours to decide to order and receive by Friday. $23 bucks.

This is me being semi-lazy (I did make a cursory effort): what mm is the Executive?

"Be gone for well over a week"

Well, as far as I'm concerned, you can post retroactive photos of your participation from 1-7 Oct 2017, when you get back. I've just figured out how to use Taptalk to post photos, and I'm counting on being able to do that during this challenge--'cuz I'll be gone as well. If Zoidberg has a different perspective, I'll rely and expect him to voice his official dissension, but I don't see that happening here.

Now, I suppose you could be in some country that doesn't allow one to carry an Executive, say California or some other dreadful place. In that case, I think you'd have to at least take covert photos of your fearsome Executive in your hotel or temporary lodgings...and post them retroactively, once you'd gotten your passport back. If you get arrested for carrying an Executive, concealed or otherwise, we'd grant you a pardon for those days spent in custody (with appropriate documentation certifying said period of detainment, naturally.).

Nah, you CAN do this. And should.

I'll probably get in on this. I carried nothing but an Executive for many years before getting into knives and buying way too many. If I did it for years, should be able to handle 30 days shouldn't I? Mine has cut up many-a-hot dog, cut hairs and tags, and that orange peeler has pryed apart more defiant Legos than you could count.

Could I carry an Executive and/or a Director? My old Executive had a lot of use is almost retirement age.

Glad you'll be joining us!

I'd pick either the Director or the Executive and stick with that. I've ordered a back-up Executive, just in case my current (Red) knife doesn't go the full distance (I can be hard on knives.). Maybe your ageing Executive should go out in a blaze of glory?

I strongly considered getting an Executive and joining you in this challenge. The more I thought about it, the more I began to look at how the SAK has fit into my own life. I've realized that I'm traditional--or maybe "conservative" is more appropriate. From my first SAK (Huntsman) to the Pioneer to my latest EDC (Craftsman), I like the traditional tool set. I've used them all in a variety of tasks for years, and I've been very satisfied with them. I don't seem to have enough curiosity or the desire to carry unfamiliar tools. It might seem boring to some, but I guess I'm comfortable with the familiar, predictable tools.

I'll be watching this thread to see what interesting experiences you all (or y'all since I'm in Texas) have with this one.

I might get in on this if I you guys don't start right away. I will be out this weekend and have not time to look for the Executive first.

This will be a tough challenge for me, since I use the cap lifter a lot, not just for beer but also to pry and scarp. I also don't like to eat Oranges. I guess if it were be easy, it wouldn't be a challenge.

Yes!

That's why we're calling it the Chuck Yeager Challenge. And clearly you have the requisite test pilot attitude: push the envelope!

Since no one has complained yet. I think we're starting 01 Oct 2017. That gives everyone a chance to get an Executive and get the mental focus necessary for 30 brutal days without that damn useful cap lifter. Easy? This is Swiss Army Knights; 'nuff said.   :D

I Like the  Executive and often is my EDC, in combo with a 84 or 91mm sak. But I think I can try to carry only this one, so count me!

I prefer coloured sak, expecially when I'm with other people, because in this way sak can appear both useful and nice to look.
So I wanted to give a new dress to my red Executive, but it's hard to find coloured scales, they come only with red and black colors actually.
I decided to swap scales with an ambassador limited edition that I've founded in a shop near my home. Maybe collectors don't appreciate what I did, but this is my way to collect ☺️.

So far, I've got the following Knights signed up for the Chuck Yeager (Executive) challenge:

pfrsantos
BleaKrytE
Mizedog
cbl51
Barry
Zhenchok
cody6268
fivesense
Flint Hills
italophil
Mini
getahl
Nix

Anybody else feel like jumping in with this group of intrepid souls?

I'm still planning on an 01 October start date, that's this coming Sunday. If you haven't gotten your Executive yet, order, beg, or steal one! This still seems like a daunting challenge to me, but, as they say, "nothing ventured, nothing gained."

I'll start a new thread on 30 Sep (USA date-time), so folks who are ahead of the dateline can kick this off for us.  :salute:

Whoa! I never said I'd do it. Ok, I'm carrying a Compact right now and it's more than enough. I might try to take out an Executive instead...

I know you didn't fully commit at first, but reading between the lines, I knew you'd be with us at the start.     :SAKnight:

I'm getting a bit eager to start the challenge and considered switching to my Executive today....but since it's Tinker Tuesday....

I see a lot of opportunity in this SAK, and my interest had already been peeked by he will not be named  >:D

Right off the bat, I think I'm going to love the two plain blades as well as the orange peeler.

Plus, I will find out first hand if that nail cleaner can function on some Phillips ( no spoilers, please! :D )

It's ON

Glad to see this taking place.  The Executive has been my favorite SAK and EDC for more years than I can remember.  I constantly am defending it both on the forums/groups as well as to my friends and co-workers.

Good luck everyone.  I can only hope you'll discover the awesomeness of the Executive.

This challenge is off to a challenging start. I am moving and all my stuff is packed up, including most  toys tools and the Executive. I ordered a new one from Amazon and hope it arrives on time.
Btw. since this challenge was posted the price on Amazon went up from $22 to $28!

Anybody else feel like jumping in with this group of intrepid souls?

Can I still join?

I've got an Alox Ambassador which I really like (but don't carry).
So this is the perfect excuse to get an Ambassador. I think I saw one in the window of a store nearby a few days ago.
Let's see, 1st of October that's Sunday here. I'll only have time to go back to the store on Friday. It'll be a close call, but I'll take a shot.

I'd have to set my principles aside for a month as I have to let my trusty Handyman at home for this challenge.
But of I still can, I'll try to enter this challenge!

Not carrying a SAK should be a punishment in itself.

At least that's how I feel when I forgot mine  :D

Absolutely. We'd love to have you. We start on October first!

Now, it's an Executive challenge. I'm guessing you meant to say 'Executive' in the above quotation. The idea is to do a 30-day challenge using an Executive model SAK. Having said, that, there's no reason you couldn't join us with an Ambassador to provide a bit of counter point. And I'm guessing you could still earn a minimalist badge as well.

But, ideally, you should get your hands on an:

Well, I just spent my play money for a Swiss Champ so I didn't have any left for a Exec. Although I do think it would be quite a challenge to survive on the Exec. for a month. It just doesn't have the tool layout I'm used to.
You guys might convert me. We'll see.

I've run each pen blade over the carbide sharpener and it is ready for action.

Affirmative, Ghostrider.
Oh, that small blade seems as thick or thicker than the blade on the 58mm. So, since it's blade is shorter, it feels stiffer, and has oh so slightly more belly as the point is higher.

What's involved in the challenge?

Pretty straightforward. Carry an Executive as your primary EDC for 30 days. Post a photo of said Executive and a little commentary on how it was used (or not), every day. If you need to use a different tool or knife to complete a task, be sure to include comments about why the Executive couldn't do the task along with your daily post. E.g. "Had to cut-up an extra-large pizza today, so went with a dedicated pizza cutter. Executive worked great in opening the little packages of red pepper flakes though!"

The idea here is to get everybody to see just how much he or she can do with just an Executive. The story is that General Chuck Yeager only carried an Executive. Apparently he used it as his primary knife while out hiking, camping, fishing, test-piloting, etc.... So that's what we're aiming for here. The rules are structured so that some people can earn a Minimalist merit badge as well. Some knights who already have the badge are just joining in for the honor, fame, and glory.

I highly encourage you, Nascar, as a prominent advocate for the Executive to jump in on this challenge and help encourage those of us who are more....Executive challenged.  :D

Kick-off is Sunday, 01 October.

Thx.  I appreciate the feedback.  I'm having major surgery next week, so I'll be out of it for a bit, otherwise I'd be all over this.  I've been living with the Executive as my only EDC (Classic on keyring) for a couple decades, at least.

Good luck to everyone.  I'll certainly be watching and commenting.  I really hope this will give many more appreciation of this wonder SAK.

Yes, prayers and best wishes for your recovery, nascar. Considering his 20 + years of dedication, I think he should receive honorary position in this challenge so he can jump in after he's feeling better if he wishes?

As far as posting pics every day, is there an easy way? Photobucket sucks and is a major pain.

All the best to you on your upcoming surgery! Also a speedy recovery!

Although I have just recently gotten interested in the Executive, I will be watching from the sidelines since I am very attached to certain SAKs to neglect them for 30 days. :)

I noticed that this is starting on Sunday, October 1st, otherwise known as Swiss Champ Sunday. As a token of support, I will feature an Executive alongside a Swiss Champ. :)
