Title: Newest release from my garage
Post by: Sparky415 on July 14, 2011, 11:54:08 AM
As you might know I don't throw very much away in my 'workshop'  ::)

I have been messing around with these bits on and off for months, until last night
I had a little off cut of spring steel left over from when I made 'lofty' my bush knife and a funny shaped piece of oak flooring from re-handling a Svord

Meet 'Scrappy'  :salute:

:-\ I'm not quite sure what its for or what I'm going to do with in now

I think I should have used tiny washers when I peened the brass rod (maybe I will redo it one day using some glue as well)
But it will stay like this until.....

Until you redo the floor in maple?

 :D

I wish my floor was done in Oak or even Maple

But the bits of flooring were rescued from a skip (dumpster) where I was working

I guess until...... I have another cunning plan  :D

It may be used as gardener tool... For some weed, branches... Or anything that need some cutting, poking, or digging but is out of reach, or not wanting to bend your back...

It could be useful to cut and steal some ham from across the table...

God work sir... not sure what I'd use it for either really!

It seems like all the things I make change/evolve as I'm doing them (normally because of mistakes)

This was going to be a lot shorter, I sometimes start with a long handle that I can cut down when I get closer to the end of the job, this helps when I do something wrong and have to start again as I still have enough spare wood to start again  :tu:

but in this case it had a nice feel in my hand so I kept it long

I think it might be too short for digging as its only 10'' or 25cms long

And I think I have the ham stealing sorted  :D

Very unusual, patent it quickly before people start making copies.  :D
You have a longish wooden handle which should provide good insulation from heat and electricity, so, you could use it to cut hot items, from a barbecue, without burning yourself, or maybe electric wires, if you are worried that they could be live :ahhh….
Provided of course, that the wood handle doesn’t catch fire..

Tony your new mutant reminds me of my Camillus Whittler(well that is what the ebay seller called it). A bit more handle than blade  :D :D.

Looks normal next to my Pioneer  :D :D

 :o :D :D. The Camillus is a lockback , funny wee thing  :-\ :D

:twak: Oi mine is not a mutant …. Its a very special little knife!

I have never seen one like that before Mat

At first I thought it was a cut down blade but the nail groove looks factory made to me

Nice little Whittler  :tu:

This is all Paul's fault  :twak:

My G/F is a little     but she has no interest in knives etc,

so when I showed her 'Carrot' Paul's knife that came to visit my garage I was expecting her to say 'that's nice Dear' (which is her way of saying 'thanks for keeping busy and out of the way' Dear)
I was very surprised when she said 'Wow that's really nice, I want one of those for the kitchen   '

I got a Farriers file  ;)

Hmmmm what did she say?   :-\ Something about 'in the kitchen'

I was thinking about it a bit more and decided this will rust  :twak: Bugger I've told her I am making her something, I shouldn't have said anything, bugger what shall I make instead   :ahhh

Ah chopper I got from the charity shop  >:D

That works, the grind is not perfect but I think I'm getting better  :)

Maybe make the thumb choil a bit deeper....I will ask later

Better test it, lovely and sharp  :D

.... I wonder how to make the handle orange?

I think we might have spoiled her by showing her the orangy goodness that is Carrot  :D

I will have to explain the rust issue to her

Fingers crossed eh?  ;)

What about orange paint? :P

I think a mini chopper like that looks pretty useful.  I'll add it to my list of "do one day" projects ::) :D

Paint   >:D

I will let the G/F decide at the weekend but I wanted a curved blade that I can rock back an forth for chopping stuff  :tu:

It is quite sharp an I have a bald patch on my arm to prove it  ::)

I will see what the jury decides but to me when I was cutting the onion it felt like I should do some more work on the profile of the blade as the 'shoulders' needed easing back (not sure how to say that) I might play with it some more before she gets her hands on it

Oh and the handle didn't feel right to me but she has smaller hands that I so....

But apart from that its great  :D

Now I know it doesn't look too bad in that last picture but to be honest the peaning didn't go as well as planed and I've ended up with a 3” fixed blade that needs re doing

Also still needs a bit of finishing off, sharpening and cleaning

Oh and I'm going to try to make a bail for it  :)

Back again and more or less finished  :tu:
I took this little chap to pieces then reassembled with a little more care
Not what you would call easy to open but its a bit better, now with added bail (which is a bit stiff   ::) )

OK so theres a hole in the side of one of the scales and the scales have a bit of a gap from the liners in places

But it has the right amount of snap and is about as hard to open as a SAK  :)

Thanks Guys  :salute:

Good price on that.

I have been meaning to ask, if you have gotten to work with that other puukko? And what do you like that first one?

Yes I like the first one very much though I've not used it for much so far, the second is started but pushed to one side at the moment  :tu:

Nice one Tony  :tu: You missed a trick with the cutout for the can opener peg though. You could have put a thumbstud on the blade and made it OHO ;)

So I was thinking,
I’m really happy how this turned out, the snap is just right but the scales which is what I liked about the knife in the first place are not right  :-\

As Al said I did think about making it a OHO but the spring is a bit too stiff  :(

I also thought about filling the hole with a bit of stag but I think it would look a mess  :-\

So I thought copper, the bail is copper but I don’t have any copper suitable  ::)
So...

Bit of brass

Just need to sharpen the nicks out of the blade
Looking pretty good for a 100year old knife (ish probably)

No worries Tony, the guy in Sheffield is also on the other end of the world, and more importantly the wrong end of a currency exchange rate........the cheap labour is over in the 3rd world!

I got some good advice here WRT getting that knife back together, and that's the point, it just needs to be fixed and reassembled rather than restored.

I must just stop buying knives for a few months and spend that money on the machines I don't have....

Do I have pictures......

I need to find the thread where I got some excellent and very obvious advice.
I basically need pins, but I haven't been able to find the right diameter.
A buddy will get me some brazing rods someday soon, and fortunately his machine shop is at my disposal at times - I'll simply drill all the holes a bit larger to fit the brazing rod.

And when I find that thread I'll post pics there and here......promise

The knife must have fallen at some point and the scales broke out both sides right where the backspring is pinned.  Fortunately I have the pieces, plastic of some sort I think.  There were thin wires in the scales that helped hold or position them on the brass liners, those are broken.
Pin it, glue it and clean some more, that's the basic plan...

I'm modifying and hoping to make knives some day, for now I want to get a drill press and the best grinder I can afford now......so basically Ryobi and not great :D

Don't worry about machines, if Tony is on about the guy I'm thinking of in Sheffield, he doesn't use them. The pins that help hold the scales on are drilled and fitted at an angle to lock the scales in place. Cleaning up the inside of the scales first to remove any distortion, just needs fine emery on a piece of glass. Disassemble, clean everything up, fix the scales to the liners, put the pins in and check the walk and talk, tweak accordingly, or peen them up if you're happy. Try modelmakers for brass rod or nickle silver rod.

The only thing I can suggest is when you peen the knife back together use shims to prevent over tightening the knife
This was the first time I’ve tried it and it seems to work (I used bits of cut up tuna tin for the shims  ;) )

 >:D That is one funky piece of Micarta if I have to say so myself, and the good news is I still have at least 1.5m of that material, as well as almost 2m in zombie-slayer green  :D 8)

BTW, it's a synthetic material - does that make it G10 rather than Micarta?

Shepherd’s axe
A shepherd’s axe is a light axe with a long and straight wooden shaft, often with a metal tip at the base. The shafts were usually engraved, as their owners had plenty of time for crafting. Many old shepherd’s axes are considered works of art. The axe head, with a butt that can be used as a hammer, is shaped to sit comfortably in the hand, so the axe can also be used as a walking stick (like a miner’s axe and older kinds of ice pick).
In the 10th century, Hungarian warriors carried light axes on long shafts, known as a Fokos. Before them, the Bulgarians had also used a similar design. From the 15th century, the shepherd’s axe migrated to Central Europe from modern-day Romania. The axe was used mainly by shepherds as a versatile tool that served as a small axe, a hammer and a walking stick all in one. Although the axe was no good for cutting down large trees, it was ideal for smaller branches. In Slovakia and Poland, shepherds were inseparable from their axes, which included heavy decorative straps.

Yep I recon mines a Focker  :D  (weighs 1.4lbs)

Files are normally made of W2.... the W stands for water quench (O1 is oil quench, A2 is air quench). Oil quenching W2 will achieve a lower than optimal hardness, but minimise potential for cracking.

Oh, then in the oven with baked potatoes 1hour at 210o c  ;)

What kind of oil?
I started with Canola, then recently got advice to use automotive oil thinned with....thinners  :D
I had about a liter of 10W40 meant for my previous car, thinned that down and eventually mixed it with the Canola oil.

The reason why I went for oil-water-oil is recently often as not the blades didn't harden.
I isolated two problems, first my magnet used for testing for critical went all middle-aged and stopped being.......attractive   Got too hot I think.
Secondly my oil just got too hot quenching multiple blades......I think.

Also want to mention my first file knife, also the first time I heat treated a blade.......it was short & chunky, same as yours, and after 3 or 4 unsuccessful oil quenches I went to water and that worked.

Unfortunately I'm not being very scientific, the last 3 blades I heat treated have been the best so far, first for the oil-water-oil method, AND the first to go directly into the oven for tempering after the heat treat.

I was using used motor oil but it made my coffee taste funny, so I got some cheap veg oil

I think mine is OK, I will see how it holds up

The G/F asks me to look at a knife for her,
It once belonged to her Grandfather he would carry it when they went for picnics in the mountains when she was a little girl,
she also says 'please don't harm it** or the sheath, replaced by her Grandfather after loosing the original'

**(I don't know why she should say this to me)

Missing the butt cap

Now all I need is a sheath
Leather bag I bought a few weeks ago...
(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/2016/DSC06183.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/2016/DSC06183.jpg.html)

Turns out the leather is more PVC  than cow
(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/2016/DSC06199.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/2016/DSC06199.jpg.html)

And the silver is a little more 'leady than I would like'  ::)
Oh well too late now

Nice job, may I ask how you got the "leather" to hold its shape, I have worked with leathers that you just wet and then you can shape them but that doesn't work for all leathers, right?
Title: Re: Newest release from my garage
Post by: Sparky415 on November 21, 2016, 08:16:35 PM

I don't think what I did will be permanent like leather should be, it feels very soft

My 'leather' seems to be a thin layer of suede backed with vinyl

As you said I soaked mine in warm water for half an hour then sandwiched it between two pieces of sleeping mat and clamped it together between two boards to dry for a couple of days

Looking good Tony!  :tu:

I did the same with a Condor Bushlore black, micarta under Wild Olive wood, everything went 100% until I applied the oil and wood seemed to separate from the micarta in one small spot.

At a friend's request I need to do something similar soon and I'm a bit hesitant.

I think 'oily' wood can be difficult to glue, maybe drill a lot of tiny shallow holes in the inside of the wood scales then fill with glue?

I've been working on this one recently, added a pot hook   :D
I used wood filler in the handle, instructions said you can stain it  :2tu: but that didn't work so well
started a sheath from a part of a plastic boot/trunk liner, with some very stiff leather belt and copper rivets

Added a cunning blade retainer  :D
Pleased so far, shame the rivets didn't all go in the same direction   ::)

Theres also an existing hidden one in the middle of the back spring and I didn't want to disturb the pivot spring in the bolster  :salute:
Plus lots or epoxy glue  ;)

I'm not sure but I think that hole was used in assembly of the knife as that pin was also touching against the back spring

BTW Tony, by complete accident I found out about a source of thin brass plate........it's sold as "shim stock" in various thicknesses!

Bit in the expensive side, but my buddy with the engineering shop needs to get some, and I can buy from him.......maybe, hopefully 2018 will be the year of my first folder.

The bolster is inspirational considering the big bar of brass I recently bought  :salute: :salute:

Nice one Sparky! When are you going to start throwing it Kirk Douglas style?

I have thought about it but at 31/2lbs I don't think it's going very far

Kirk Douglas is 101years old so...
The bit between 2.50 and 3.30 (those are about 11/2lbs)

I have had this idea kicking about in my head for a good few years
today I decided it was time ...  :ahhh

Eclipse used to make a great pad saw handle, took all sorts of blades inc hacksaw blades so you could use the same handle to cut many materials...

And I really like reciprocating saw blades, if only we could get
them to fit other tools...

I have a couple of users

Hi Tony

Well done!  :tu:

I was humbled by similar efforts of a guy I'm helping with his early knife making effort, he user 2nd hand but good idler pulleys on his build.

I ended up buying a kit, built & up & running.  Bought an enclosure for the VSD yesterday so that's my last hurdle out of the way......just have to deal with the nervousness and almost disbelief that I have it.

Also built a DIY gas forge in the past few weeks. I built for less than half the price I could buy for, but I was severely worried about gas consumption.
Past Saturday those fears were put to rest, worked till I was pooped and the 9kg gas bottle was still going strong, the 19kg I bought should last several sessions.

I plan on doubling the burners to 4 for the longer blades.

Needs some work
(https://i.imgur.com/6Y6G9Lg.jpg)

kinda sorted now, but it's a bit of a funny shape

Have you made a grinder clamp for your vice at all?  I want to clamp one of mine in a vice with a wire wheel in it as I don't have one on a bench grinder

I'm thinking a few jubilee clips to strap it to some angle and then clamp that in the vice might work.  Update - had another thought, a piece of channel so it can be secured with bolts in the side handle holes.

Or maybe buy something ready made like this if I can find one big enough then won't have to use my vice either, I can clamp that anywhere https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/192471632218?chn=ps&adgroupid=59254217008&rlsatarget=pla-431295913330&abcId=1134056&adtype=pla&merchantid=114900827&poi=&googleloc=1007055&device=c&campaignid=1340838145&crdt=0

I like the new shape of the axe, but what's wrong with the original shape? Didn't it get weaker, having taking out part of the metal? The edge remained the same length, so why reshape it?

There was nothing wrong with the axe head before, it just needed a bit of sharpening
But now it is easy to choke up on the head for carving/bush craft and it's also a bit lighter  :tu:

Well, my garage just got smaller, Grant it I have a two car garage, but I can’t use it unless someone is out with me, that and I really don’t have anything too big to work with, so there’s the office/workout/hobby room, but the Mrs wants to move things around and that meant moving my hobby station, so I suggested moving it into the closet? It’s a nice size closet with plenty of room, and well, I did it.. for everything I use it for it pretty much came out nice, just no window to spy on the backyard :(  anyway, here’s a pic, there’s another 2ft to the left that I can put stuff, and I got clamps and hiking sticks to the right. I should get more lights with that shelf and heck some speakers, oh, I got a surround sound system in storage, although I don’t think the Mrs would like that,, :(
JR
Here’s a pic of what I had before, it guess you can say I’ll be hiding in the closet more, lol..

Thanks Kev and Fuzzy  :hatsoff:

Alf,
It might be a tiny bit steeper I just made it up as I went along,
as the tip is a little thicker where it's been re-profiled the bevel is wider but the same angle as the rest of the knife
Yep think thats right  :tu:

I can never find the disc cutter 'spanner' when I need it  ::)

It's one of those "don't try this at home!" things that people show you   ;)  :D

I remember people taping the chuck key to their drill's power cord... perhaps you could do something similar?

I have done that 'out on site' but for some reason it annoys me  ::)
I shouldn't have to do it in my small garage because there is a hook they (are supposed to) live on and I'm the only person that works in there....
But they still go missing

You need an imaginary friend you can blame eg "What's that bloody Pablo done with my blimmin' spanner?!"

It was an old clip I didn't use just to show you don't always need a grinder key
It also works on drills that need a chuck key (sometimes)

And that was a reminder to always use safety specs  :pok:

This was my Grandfathers knife,   :tu:

Sadly when I was younger I never asked him about his life, now his knife has ended up in my possession
I do know He was a cartwright a man that was used to working with hand tools,
And this knife was a tool to be used, It has had a hard working life,  the plastic scales are poorly fitting, cracked in a couple of places and the liners are a little bent

It is a Taylors Eye Witness with Taylors Eye Lambsfoot engraved on the blade

After a few hours of cleaning and sharpening it now looks like this

What are the paper-like stuff in the photo titled "With the shims"? What's a shim?

SHIM

a thin slip or wedge of metal, wood, etc., for driving into crevices, as between machine parts to compensate for wear, or beneath bedplates, large stones, etc., to level them.

Or a thin spacer :) This time, your explanation makes more sense

Hi Ddogu
As the Guys said  :tu:

I use a tuna can cut in to strips
I put the knife together with the shims and peen the pins over
Then I pull out the shims and try opening the knife, if its OK job done
if it's too loose I give the pins a little more peening until I'm happy with it

I hope that makes sense, tell me if you need more information  :salute:

You can use any type of thin metal you like for the shims but aluminium might be too soft
