I like the Compact as I prefer to save a layer by having a combo tool instead of a committed opener layer. But I also like having a small pen blade.
I've got a Serrated Spartan on order and I am thinking of making a double large bladed Compact.
Large blade / combo tool
Scissors
Serrated blade / Small pen blade
(Oh, and probably a back sided Phillips instead of a cork screw.)
This is a Yeoman I made from a Compact and added the magnifier/in-line Phillips layer.

Windson- Those compacts are sweet! I've been meaning to ask what wire you use for your danglers, btw...
I do have a question, what differentiates a 91mm Golfer from a Compact with no hook?
I have a few others, but these two get carried the most. The Timekeeper gets a lot of special occasion use. :)8)
I've completely fallen for the Compact. It sees more pocket time lately than any other SAK I have. :tu:I hear you JD, I have a number of SAKs lined up for rotation, Champion, Explorer, Syph Custom Alox, Pioneer, and two Compacts - and the vast majority of days, I default to the Compact even going back and exchanging my first pick to a Compact. For general, urban EDC, it's simply enough. (Now, I'm curious whether my newly acquired Trail Guide is able to change that.)

If you think about, the Trail Guide is simply a Compact with an awesome file.....what's not to love! 8)
My stag scaled one.
Does the DofE count in
The Compact is the perfect pocket tool for a dinner party or soirée. The slim size won't cause an unsightly bulge in your outfit; you can open a bottle of beer (probably some hand-crafted Belgian Trappist brew, this is a fancy affair) or wine; and if you meet the man or woman of your dreams, you have the pen to write down their phone number.

I just made myself sound like some kind of old-timey dinosaur, didn't I... thinking that people still use pens to write down phone numbers ::)

I never thought I'd find one of these at this point in time -- I mean people have somehow been buying Climbers, Mountaineers, and even Deluxe Tinkers! I came into the store hoping to find a Deluxe Tinker or maybe an Executive....but Lo and Behold! a Compact! Somehow they missed this one!
My next concern was the price coz I heard it was expensive for a 2-layer knife. Well, the Compact costs more than the Executive by just USD5...Same price as a Minichamp! Looking forward to take it through its paces soon!
C'mon Vic... get the Yeoman back into the regular lineup!
The Compact is a great tool. As I like it as it is. But is has some limitations due to the two-layer+scissors construction. I need (!!!) a secondary blade on each of my EDC-knives. I use to carry an EDC-knife and a work-knife in combination. For several reasons. And the EDC-knives also in my freetime.
The missing secondary blade is something that kicks the Compact out the EDC-rotation. An awl would be nice as well.
But it has a ton of pros as well. The scissors on a two layer knife is just such an easy carry. The combo-tool is something that doesn´t bother me that much. But the hook with the nail-file is nice to have at hand.
The Compact is such a great tool, I use to carry in the past rather frequently. The missing secondary blade could have been compensated with the blade on Classic or Escort or something of that liking.
C'mon Vic... get the Yeoman back into the regular lineup!

Has anyone used the combo tool on this to actually open cans?

Agreed! :tu:
I really liked the Timekeeper, REALLY liked it, but just couldn't bring myself to carry it. I just knew it would get wrecked clattering against all the other crap in my pocket. :-[
I got a Compact for my wife, it's sitting in a drawer as she won't use it nor let me take it
I've always been undecided on whether I like the Compact or not so much. It's the lack of prying and driving screws ability that really makes me prefer the Climber over the Compact ( Huntsman over both  ). I can forgo the small blade which I really like, however the fact that there's no awl on the Compact either just makes me go :ahhh :ahhh
Since I've carried the Compact for another full week without the need to swap for another model, here's to appreciating it some more:

Funny, I have an old Golfer and an awl + Phillips mod myself, but I keep coming back to the standard Compact setup, if only for the added file on the hook.Since I've carried the Compact for another full week without the need to swap for another model, here's to appreciating it some more:

Agreed Windson...more and more, all I've been carrying is the 91Golfer or my Compact mod (with Awl and Phillips)!
Everytime I read this thread I think I'm missing out on something. Then I wander off and get distracted (lately by a few Classics). Perhaps it's time to find me a Compact. :dd:

Completely agree! My problem is the strong attachment that I have for the Explorer and to a lessor extent, the Yeoman. If I carry a Compact, it is as a 2nd SAK.

Is there a Compact-like SAK that has the 2nd small blade? If your looking for a 2 layer 91mm model with scissors, I don't think there is one...

Having a desk job, I don't need anything real heavy duty, but the blades on anything smaller than the 84mm SAKs leave me wanting more blade.yeah, but how'd you survive without the hook?
Plus, I find scissors very useful. So I carried a Compact 5 days a week for years. Served me well. Then this happened:

MiniChamp
Manager
Alox SD
Green Signature SD
Pioneer
Farmer
OC Pioneer
Climber +
Explorer
Camper
Spartan
Tinker (some Tuesdays as an act of reaching across the aisle)

You have quite an EDC line-up!
I started out with the intention of using my purchases instead of collecting. As my father used to say, "Famous last words". :)
Most of my SAKs don't see any use and spend their time in storage. I have started caching them around the house in places that I might want to use them, which is really handy now that it is summer and I spend most of my time in gym trunks (no pockets). I covered a small table near my recliner with most of my alox SAKs plus several Swiss Champs and Explorers. I also keep a Cadet next to my remotes.
These days my focus is to enjoy the SAKs I have instead of buying new ones on an almost continual basis as I had been doing. :)
Thank you Z.For two weeks now in my pocket...

Yeah, don't see why you can't alternate depending on your needs or mood.
I've been carrying my new climber all week and really love it. I ordered some scales to make it a plus, but ... when I first ordered it I got a version II. I have to confess I really like the current scales. I think they're nylon. They have a little texture and seem very resilient to scratching.
Curious if they make these in plus versions....

Unfortunately, they do not offer the nylons in plus versions but I have heard of people modding their own scales.
I like the nylon scales as well, and climbers in general so I have a few. I would be glad to sen you this one up front in the pic to put your plus scales on and leave your II intact. Just lmk.

Thanks El Corkscrew, that is an incredibly kind offer.
I'll try and figure something out though. When I ordered the II version, I also bought a huntsman and a mountaineer, also both with the nylon scales. I'm planning on turning those into plus models for my boys, so I'll have a couple sets of extra nylon scales laying around. When the plus scales arrive I'll give them a good look - maybe it's an easy dremel mod.
Yeah, don't see why you can't alternate depending on your needs or mood. .
For sure, should be an easy switch. There's tons of info in the SAK forum about switching scales. A little heat from a hair dryer or something is your friend to avoid breaks. Good to have a vice but not absolutely necessary. The nylons may require just a touch of glue. I want to do a 84mm Huntsman or Golfer +Saw mod using blue nylons... can't wait. :D
You can. That is a celebration of the versatility and variety of the wide number of SAKs and multis out there. My only question is, how do you know which one you need at the start of the day?
I got a new Compact in the mail today to replace the one I gave to my older daughter, who had lost hers. I tried to get by with a Pioneer in my pocket and a Classic on my keys for a few weeks; it worked OK, but I had to have my Compact back.
I've probably given a dozen of these away over the years; maybe I should keep a couple of spares on-hand.

It's not the mod that's the crime, is the unnatural and forceful backside phillips oppression..
I hear my corkscrews singing... "we shall overcome..."

I'm in agreement...reminding one of what was said many centuries ago:
as retold by Francis Bacon, in Essays, 1625:
Mahomet cald the Hill to come to him. And when the Hill stood still, he was neuer a whit abashed, but said; If the Hill will not come to Mahomet, Mahomet wil go to the hil.
So it seems modifications are required...
It has taken me awhile but I'm finally getting used to the black Compact after carrying El Rojo for so long... I am confident he will enjoy his new life in the mother country.El Compact will be treasured and well looked after my friend. Bathed in the finest olive oil and wiped dry on Egyptian cotton - no luxury will be too great for this fine beauty. :salute:
Where is the Compact Lack of Appreciation thread please? :D
Maybe I should search "combo tool fails"?

That is well within your rights Señor Crepúsculo. The combo tool has not failed me yet. But I definitely will report back when it does. El KC Rambler/Manager has been there for any phillips needs that have presented themselves so far. I find that extra couple mm from the Climber + makes a difference in El Pocket.

I'm in agreement on those extra mm's El Corkscrew.
My compact is starting to win out every time over my climber on the daily carry decision. Though I love the emerald scales on my climber, each time I pick it up and compare it to the compact all I seem to personally be loosing is the Awl and the smaller blade. I rarely need a phillips and even if so, the one on the can opener has such a small reach.
Of those, it's the smaller 2nd blade I miss the most as I find it perfect for opening boxes and packages etc.
I'm excited awaiting my executive from the MTO store, (Jeez, why isn't it here already? I ordered it yesterday for cryin out loud!). :gimme:
If it's blade size is a good compromise I might be very happy!
That goes for the scissors as well, but I'm starting to think it might be a good edc for me when I'm feeling minimalist.
I supplement my climber with a key chain SAK as well... I really just don't miss an opportunity to carry a Swiss Army knife. In the winter time I have an executive in the coat pocket as well. and perhaps you are forgetting the compact does have an up on the climber with the hook file ... And you don't have to buy the plus scales separately.
So what's all this talk about Compact supplement gear when you could have it all with a Climber? When I reach for my pocket knife, I don't have to decide which one. :duel:Being a new owner of both, I will say the Climber feels so much larger (and not in a good way) than the Compact.
:like: :drink:
Why is this model suddenly so appealing? It should be renamed Smart :DPlus scales, file on the back of the hook, scissors cost more to produce.
Why does this model cost more than other 2-layer SAKs ???

Take a look at the DofE. It's cheaper than the Compact, and also got the file on the hook. Added bonus might be that the rounded off knife blade is more acceptable for you to carry over there, without fear of people getting the wrong impression
It would, if I didn't need to enlarge the pivot hole of the combo tool. :-\Drat, they got me! :rant:Very nice pfrsantos. :drool:Why? So we won't notice when you abuse it?

Yes you'll need to drill it out but it's possible.
It's also useable in a 91mm tool but it'll sit a little lower.
Will have to send my only Waiter for it though, but anything for you Pabs :)

I've got some beach front property in Arizona if he's interested.
But I could be wrong... from the picture angle, the backtool pivot seems closer to the Shield... Either way, Golfer is a nice score...Yes! Opps. Im not sure if he has the 91mm or 84mm version? I'll be getting it in a few hours. Is he holding an 84mm? Is the scissor springs different on 84 and 91mm SAKs?

Ok, good...Thank you for the extremely generous offer, but no thank you. :hatsoff:I'll send you a 84mm tool with combo tool if you like Pablo. It would, if I didn't need to enlarge the pivot hole of the combo tool. :-\Drat, they got me! :rant:Very nice pfrsantos. :drool:Why? So we won't notice when you abuse it?
Just wondering, anyone in europe have a beaten up compact?
Lol, I want a compact with an intact/slightly twisted combo tool, the condition of the rest doesn't matter.
Would a Bantam work? It's a little smaller, but maybe it would solve your problem. It's easier to find.

You will...I'm doing a Scientist mod now and have to enlarge the current spare combo tool I have to do it, otherwise I'll have to break down one of the parts-Compacts I have.
Yes you'll need to drill it out but it's possible.
It's also useable in a 91mm tool but it'll sit a little lower.
Will have to send my only Waiter for it though, but anything for you Pabs :)
I'll buy one on Amazon or find one at the boot sales in good time.
Otherwise I'd have to get my own drinks.

I think it just needs the scissors spring, not the back spring for the scissors. That won't be too hard to get, I think.
Different size spring... But 91mm can be used too... just need to coerse it a bit :cheers:I hope so. Same spring as 91mm scissors? I finally got it! Yes! My 84mm Golfer!Yes! Thanks for the pics mate. Don't get me wrong, the pics are great, but those angles are terrible for comparing Sak sizes, they look exactly the same size to me from those angles. Best way for that it to take full on straight pics or either the front/back or of the sides, side by side :-\
Maybe something 's wrong with my eyes but it still looks 91mm to me, same as the super tinker...

Scissors need spring and scales need replacement but it looks good84mm Golfer... scales you can find... springs might be tough though

Opps. Im not sure if he has the 91mm or 84mm version? I'll be getting it in a few hours. Is he holding an 84mm? Is the scissor springs different on 84 and 91mm SAKs?

I think it just needs the scissors spring, not the back spring for the scissors. That won't be too hard to get, I think.
I'm excited to clean and beautify this (http://emoji.tapatalk-cdn.com/emoji106.png)(http://emoji.tapatalk-cdn.com/emoji106.png)

That's a lovely Golfer there mate :tu:
But you say it's an 84mm? From the pics you've posted it looks like a 91mm to me... :-\
It may be the angle of the pics tho... But it sure looks like 91mm... Have you put it side by side with a 91 to be sure?

Thanks for the pics mate. Don't get me wrong, the pics are great, but those angles are terrible for comparing Sak sizes, they look exactly the same size to me from those angles. Best way for that it to take full on straight pics or either the front/back or of the sides, side by side :-\
Maybe something 's wrong with my eyes but it still looks 91mm to me, same as the super tinker...
Youre right there. I must have conditioned my mind to think I was getting an 84mm. I do have an 84mm Bantam so I'll now consider this Golfer as its big and improved brother :D
Now those 91mm scissor springs will definitely fit... No coersion needed...

I'm having a very hard time installing the spring, even after watching so many YouTube tutorial. My Golfer's scisor hole has no chamfer, and the hole itself seems smaller than my newer SAKs. I'll try again tomorrow. In the meantime...

I've run into that problem and addressed with making the spring loop smaller w/ needle nose pliers then using a small nail to bend it back once it's in place.
I usualy try inserting it from the other side if that occurs and use pliers to clamp them in.Thanks, guys!

You got your own caddy?! Cool!Yeah, this is the Mini but I find it small for even a 2-layer SAK. I might get a nylon caddy soon ☺

The eyelets are great, you can make lots of different carry options with them.

That's a pretty cool idea! I thought of the pliers to make the loop smaller, but hadn't thought about a way to make it regain it's form again.

84mm Golfers show up every month or so on evil bay. I made a point of tracking them for a year and was able to get a few, primarily for the 84mm scissors. The ones in good shape will stay Golfers as I really like them. In fact, both sized Golfers are my favorite EDC when possible (otherwise it's a Manager or an Alox Cadet). Here are a couple of 84 vs 91 Golfer shots I did.
I will be installing a scissor spring later... I'll try to get some pics. Thanks, guys!

Like in this one? If you use the opening in the scissors hole to hold the spring just after the round tip, it might do the trick.

Place spring hole on scissors hole. Put pliers on. Clamp down.My problem is spring hole won't fit scissor hole. it's like both holes should have exactly the same shape to fit, with almost zero tolerance
Nothing?
Place spring on other side of scissors and retry.

A few days ago i decided to put a Compact in my pocket. Never carried it before. And i was surprised about it. Great set of tool for edc, light weight and i found that combotool is more convenient for me than the divided openers, only if i do not take its to use as a screwdriver and mini crowbar.

I think the Compact is an example of a SAK that punches way above its weight (to use a boxing analogy). It's only two layers and yet it has an excellent span of functionality. I carry it when I want a blade and scissors in a slim form factor. I am definitely a fan of the Compact.

My wife has a 7 volume set of Van Gough letters and I sometimes use one of those volumes as a background. Lately, I have just been taking photos of SAKs on my hobby table.

Great analogy, Jim. I absolutely agree that the 84mm & 91mm Golfers/Compacts punch way above their weight. :2tu:

Hey Compact Users, how's with your blade centering? I recently got my Compact and found that blade is aligned a little bit out of the center to the right (closer to combo tool), after few openings and closings I see little scratches on the blade and combo tool, is it normal for that model? Thanks
Awlsome Compact!

I love the idea of the Compact. I love the feel of the Compact. I love almost everything about the Compact...... except the combo tool. I can’t stand it! I own a Compact but NEVER carry it because of the combo tool. I just cannot learn to love it. Now if it had a standard cap lifter/flathead..... :ahhhIf you provide the compact plus a throwaway, I'll put one up for you. Not done any checking on springs etc but I really only think it's the visible pray that is different. If anyone knows, please advise
The Combo Tool is noticeably thinner than the cap lifter so as to fit in the space normally occupied by the small pen blade. I'm not sure a regular cap lifter would fit opposite the main blade...I love the idea of the Compact. I love the feel of the Compact. Other than the military I always worked in same kind of environment. No denim unless it was a designated denim day. For about ten years I wore suits. Wore a SAK on my belt in a small pouch and nobody ever said anything. However, I wasn't the only person with a slip joint knife. Many carried what I would call a "gentleman's" knife. Very slim with one or two 2-1/2 - 3 inch blades. Like the compact, unobtrusive. Others carried a medium size SAK on their belt; a Vic 91mm or Wenger 85mm. What's their policy on that and knives in general?
John
Nice, John. You have some great camera skills! :tu: You might condiser submitting a shot or two for the calendar. :tu:

Thanks . . . did some pro work on the side some time ago . . . commercial (on location and architectural), studio, product, etc.
Very similar thoughts for El Corkscrew:
Look though the employee handbook which you did. Absent any outright clear prohibition of anything edged, ask for forgiveness, not permission. It's not a weapon, it's a tool. My brother currently works at a state university and they prohibit anything longer than 3 inches because of multi-tools and SAKs being used routinely as tools. The difference is a clear policy and it's a reasonably sane one. If you walked in wearing a Ka-Bar or M9 bayonet, they would probably put that under the "weapon" definition. Nix is right . . . be observant for a while and you will undoubtedly see folks with folders in their pockets. Look for the clips ;-)

Totally spied the trainer with a pocket clip today. It looked like the kind of clip that comes on a locking blade, more-threatening looking knife, so... I think I'm good... I do have to go into a lot of government buildings (jails, social security, courthouses) with this job, so I'll have to remember to leave the SAK in the car for these joyous occasions.
But a yellow Compact would be excellent. Maybe I should carry mine tomorrow ....

But why would it be a blasphemy? not to be able to untie knots with a CS because you have a SD? :drink:

I have a Compact that I've owned for several years, carried many times, but hardly ever used. The reason for this, is that it lives permanently in the little first aid kit that I'll throw in the bag when away from home. The compact just seems the perfect knife for that role.
I'm unlikely to ever need to saw a branch for a splint - or at least would be unable to, should I need one. My kit, is really just a "booboo" or minor inconvenience kit, rather than anything life saving. A knife, a pair of scissors, tweezers, a pin for digging out splinters, and a pen for emergency notes is all that's really needed. What better knife for tucking in a little kit like that, than the Compact.
I don't mind carrying something a little larger as a pocket knife, but I find it very reassuring to know that should my knife get lost, that trusty Compact is there ready to handle the simple and most frequently encountered challenges that life might throw at me while I'm away from home.
 :like: :tu:
So you played around with the Compact and changed your opinion on the combo tool... That´s good. But where did that opinion come from in the first place? If it wasn´t experience, it must have been hearsay. Of course you can´t test every existing tool personally, but strongly advocating other people´s opinions without actually knowing what you´re talking about? That´s not good.
Anyway, I hope you like the Compacts. Thanks for confessing. ;)
MacG, I'm glad to hear you're starting to come around from our last discussion of the combo tool!
I agree that it works great for urban carry, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a better example of a 2-layer urban knife than the Compact or 84mm Golfer. I love to pair mine with an LM Skeletool at the office or "out on the town".

Apart from the obvious diference in thickness, the diference in weight is also as evident vs my Climber or Super Tinker.
What i can't understand is why is the ring magnetized...? On both Compacts it sticks to the upper or lower tools quite obviously.

You bring up a great point. I used to carry 4+ layer cellidor models frequently years ago, but when I started carrying ALOX I realized how much I liked the slim profile, and then started carrying slimmer cellidor models and really noticed the weight difference. Nowadays if I pretty much don't carry anything wider than 3 layers unless I strap a pouch on my belt, and that just ruins the convenience of having a readily-accessible knife/tool in my pocket, IMO.
None of my SAKs have magnetized split rings. Have you been rubbing it so much that you've aligned the atoms? Man, I think you like that Compact more than you're admitting....
Yup.... i've got to hand it... I might just get along with it for regular EDC most of the time... :ahhh

Some of my dedicated screw drivers are magnetized, which is neat and quite useful at times. But why magnetize a split ring? And I wonder if Vx themselves make them.
Yup... 3 layers is as much as i'll pocket carry for regular edc. I'll take my Huntsman (or Camper/Hiker) if i head out to the country. But in the city/suburbs a two layer is always more comfortable in the pocket. This is thinner but not like Spartan thin, i think its more comfortable on the hand, as much as a 3 layer.
About the split ring....
Im liking the compact but its not from rubbing.... Both new compacts rings are like that, new out of the box. One of my super tinkers ring stick lightly to the hook but that was from years of pocket friction. These ones stick fairly strong to all tools . I wonder if it's the ring or the tools tho.... Must check that out...
Had one and sold it. A bit too large for my EDC. Starting to regret.

I understand you very well... A couple of months ago i was really hung up on the 84mm's for quite some time, especially the small tinkers and tourists, but I'm leaning to the 91mm's again, cause i really wanted to have full size scissors again, and after a while of being away from the 84's, the 91's aren't really that much big really....
And i must hand it... The grip is much better.... Still love the 84's though... :D
Lately its either the Compact or the Climber, or both.....
Is this the right place for an early Golfer?
Can I join in? :like:
Had not noticed before today but I really like the hidden nail file in the back of the hook, nice to see a surprise on a tool you've had for 8 yearsReminds me of an incident some years ago where I mentioned the tooth pick and tweezers on a SAK. He looked at me funny and said "What?".

I slid out the T&T and he remarked that he thought the grey and putty colored nail pulls "were just a design".

That's not even the half of it...
nice kamakiri, I always wanted a backup, but they are too pricey these days, maybe I can find one on ebay.
I went through a bunch more saks to find more hook files, so far my voyager lite is the only one I found, gonna check my other storage box soon, Vic should put this hook/file on more models.

They are nice. Even better if you go full on green with the accessories. Pity about the pen...:iagree:

My first Compact in British Racing Green. Arrived today. I’m smitten.Me too! There's something about BRG that fits this knife. I had mine put away pretty much since my son traded me his a few months ago. Nix reminded me about the Compact in a thread he started yesterday. I pocketed it this morning and now I understand why this knife is so well loved.
Kitchen duty! I love the combo tool
Compact's combo conquers can of corn! :tu:Great looking Salad Nix!

Excellent! Very funny, too. I'm planning on opening a can of corn for a lunchtime salad later on! :tu:
( And, unlike Twosak Shakur, I won't cheat and use a Spartan. ;) )
Later on it was time for an iced coffee......

Let see Twosak Shakur do that with his fancy Spartan!
Still CompAction saturday!  :tu:
Compact helped to cut some gorgonzola and meia cura cheese (the last one is a regional cheese)
The cheese was melted with milk cream and put inside a fresh bread (My son call It Dad's bread).
And the Compact helped to open a bottle of wine.

Compact getting pocket time and riding shotgun for the Spirit XC. A pretty good combination if you ask me
I must say, I thought I’d never like this model, but I really do, after having it for a bit now. I changed scales to emerald, and they’re gorgeous, but I miss the red, so I ordered another. Don’t tell my wife. Here’s the beauty. Goes really well with tan paracord.:like: done the same to mine, love that green emerald

Cool pic, would do nicely in the camo club thread :D
Goes really well with tan paracord.Yes indeed. Perhaps my Climber will get a similar treatment...if I can shake the desire for a blue or yellow 91mm SAK.

Proud owner of a Compact for the first time!
With the Huntsman and the Explorer, I feel a first cycle of SAKs is complete.
I will try to carry it for some weeks straight to see how it is to have a knife without the awl.
I picked this one up last week. The seller had it listed as a Golfer, but I think it's an early Compact.
It has a tool set that the SAKWiki entry for the Golfer says doesn't exist - combo tool with hook, pen, and pin. SAKWiki says the hook, pen, and pin appeared when the combo tool was replaced with the divot repair tool. Mine also has a non-grooved corkscrew and riveted scissors, so it's a newer model.
And the entry for the Compact says:
The other model was the very first Compact which retained the features of the previous Golfer but added the hook and a straight pin. The nail-file would be added to the hook sometime later.
Mine doesn't have the nail file.
If there are any Compact experts who can tell for sure, I'd love to know.
But regardless of what it is, I like the tool set so am happy with it.
Well I was part, since I posted like 6 post back but it kinda got modified, so technically it’s not compact anymore..That's an interesting combination of tools. I like the addition of a real Phillips screwdriver. I'm not a big wood saw user, but maybe with the universal scaler instead... hmmm....

That's an interesting combination of tools. I like the addition of a real Phillips screwdriver. I'm not a big wood saw user, but maybe with the universal scaler instead... hmmm....Thanks, I think the compact would have been just about perfect if they switched the corkscrew with the Philips, that would have been a simple mod since it would have been only one pin, but I figured since I was at it adding a saw would really make it spot on, the only thing I didn’t do was put an awl on the backside, I was originally going to do so but the width of an awl and saw are not the same so I would have had to put some very thin spacer and I was pretty much done in a few hours with the whole thing I just fig ahh this is spot on, and no rigs,, so I’ll just leave it, I could always redo it if I want to, but I’m so into alox, the FarmerX is my and as been my carry for almost 1-1/2yrs straight, I like how the blade has a little more beef to it, and especially the alox scales,,
Nice job!
I was just looking back at dates and it was right at four years ago this week that I started carrying a Compact on a daily basis. I do swap it out occasionally for a Farmer or Fieldmaster if I think I need a saw for the day, but normally the Compact is in my pocket. It’s done everything I’ve needed except for when I need a saw. The pen has come in handy and I’ve even used the parcel hook on occasion. It’s definitely less noticeable in pocket that the Climber I was normally carrying before. My only real complaint with it is that the combo tool is not as good of a cap lifter & screwdriver as the standard one.I actually think the combo tool is more effective as a cap lifter than the standard, but definitely leaves something to be desired as a screwdriver.
Sunflower and matching Compact ;)The ukranian colours are just a coincidence? Either way, it looks great!
The compact makes a great companion toolset to the PST. Great office tools and low profile combo.

When I first got the Compact, i didn't like it because it didn't work on Phillips screws. However, a little work with the Work Sharp knife sharpener and it works on Phillips screws just fine. Now I carry the Compact with me whenever carrying the Swiss Champ is inconvenient, like anywhere other than work. :tu:

I've been carrying this guy in my pocket at home for three years now, and I'll tell what I think: It's thin enough that I don't feel it in the pocket when I go to sleep, but I can't make me take it outside.
I don't trust it.
Sure, it has a very good toolset for most at-home tasks, and I do like the combination of scissors and nail file, but still...
I like the small blade and trust the dedicated openers of the Climber more than the combo tool.
So, slap plus scales on a Climber and you get more for less money, that's what I tell beginners.
It's the thinnest 91mm with a scissor and that is its raison d'etre. I don't use mine much but it's fine if what you need is a scissor and a main blade and maybe open a bottle or can. The nail file is not great but ok in a pinch.
I probably use the opener layer more than i use the blade or scissors, and it's definitely for the bottle or can opening features. I rarely open bottles with it, and opened like 2 cans in 40 years of SAK use, literally.
You use the opener layer for bottle or can opening features rarely, but more than you use the blade or scissors? :dunno:
Yes. Because the bottle and can opening functions are the least of my use (or interest) for the opener layer.
The bottle and can opener are my screwdrivers (or bit drivers), my pry tools, scrape tools, prod tools, push tools, even pull tools in the case of the can opener.
Those two combined have probably more frequent use than the blade itself.
Yes. Because the bottle and can opening functions are the least of my use (or interest) for the opener layer. That’s true for me as well. I used the scissors the most and then openers but not usually for opening cans or bottles.

Is this a good deal? That’s less than A$60 (Australian) and here they’re normally at least $90, usually over $100 so I’d say yes but don’t know what you normally pay for them there

Is this a good deal?Assuming everything is legitimate, it is a good deal. They are usually $50+ these days.
