Title: Official Release- SOG 2017 FULL CATALOG!
Post by: Grant Lamontagne on January 05, 2017, 12:32:26 PM
We've seen the 3rd Generation Micro Tool Clip that was released early, we've seen the SYNC II that SOG allowed us to announce, and we've seen leaked photos from the new catalog- now be prepared to see all 54 full color pages of the entire 2017 catalog in this official release from SOG!

You can download/view the catalog at this link:

SOG 2017 Catalog (https://www.dropbox.com/s/ab4v3ngmto0ckhn/2017_SOGCatalog_Digital.pdf?dl=0)

Thanks to SOG for letting us in on this a bit early!

No worries guys.... I've been sitting on it for a while now, on the agreement that I wouldn't release it before January 5th.  Needless to say, every time someone had a question or speculation on it I was blowing up inside, wanting to let the cat out of the bag!   :ahhh

Plus, that's my Dropbox link, so if SOG changes their mind it won't disappear again!   >:D

Powergrab looks really nice, but it's quite the $ to spend for a MT considering the Spirit, Charge, and similar priced tools.
Poweraccess is a winner for me, like the Baton tools. Just wondering their thickness (so as to put them in EDC bags and kits, like Maxpedition fatties and Wenger backpacks, where the pens go)

It is my first time looking at the full SOG catalog.
The small Centi folder calls out to me. as does the small Sync and the switchplier

The small Centi folder is the one that came with the Micro Tool Clip and isn't too bad for a small folder.  Don't expect to baton it through some firewood and you will get along with it quite well.  :D

But if you want to baton firewood, gut and skin deer, carve wood, cut ropes and slay a dragon and a T-59 tank full of ninjas every now and then, you will want the Vulcan. Great folder.

I agree- the Vulcan is a serious knife indeed.  I really like that one.

I have a large hand forged laplander knife bought north of the arctic circle for bushcraft duties.

As a fine scale modeller, tiny tools appeal to me. Opinel no2, spyderco bug and their ilk are endlessly more fascinating to me than all the world's stealthed commando cutlery combined  ;)
But different strokes for different folks

The Q2 always seems to be shown splayed in the open position in every pic I've seen so far, and it's got the gearing on it - which all seems quite confusing to me.

I also cant quite figure out if the implements (not pliers) on the Q3 and Q4 are meant to be used with the tool closed up in baton form, or if the tool will try to open while doing that.

Q1 seems reasonably sensible

Still unconvinced about the rest of the new offerings at first glance. There's lots of design decisions that I wouldn't have made. I'm still looking forward to user reviews though.

Seen like the tools are outside accessible and use in baton mode..

50ft isn't the only one being caution on SOG's new designs.
I found those designs while look good on paper, but they quickly fell short after some hand on usage, at in the past.

Now that the releases are official, and other places are also carrying the announcements, I might start a new thread with some thoughts on the design approaches of these tools

I used to have a subscription to Fine Scale Modeller.  :D

I was fascinated by a pic in the gallery once of a diorama of an LAPD garage featuring a Lamborghini being painted up as a patrol car that I went out and bought a Ferrari F40 model and did it up as a police car, complete with scratch built low profile light bar.

I haven't bought a model in probably 20 years, but I'd love to get back to it.

I feel it appropriate to thank SOG for being so generous to us MultiTOOLS here at MTO. They definitely did not need to let us get sneek peeks (even though I think it is good marketing strategy on their part) but I really appreciate it.

So, thank you SOG! :salute: :salute: :salute:

I'm with rdub in the matter that I also really enjoy sog products. Out of this new batch the Powergrab, Sync I, and the Baton Q1 look like they'll be getting a chance in my pockets. the Sync and Baton are both interesting designs so getting them in hand will be the only way to fully see the execution of those designs. Also, I am thrilled to see SOG get rid of those annoying studs they put on the Powerplay     The studs made the entire thing a no go for me. Looks like the Powergrab has sliders  :gimme:

all in all I like where they're going. Are the smaller components going to be interchangeable? I've never been a fan of they're files. So it'd be nice to put a saw there instead.

HEY!!!!! NEW PAGE!!!! :nanadance: :nanadance: :nanadance: :nanadance: :nanadance: :nanadance: :nanadance: :nanadance:

I think I can see why the PowerPlay tabs might be frustrating, but the PowerGrab sliders don't look very robust to me.

None of this years new SOG tools has a saw, which I found a little surprising

Maybe they are going back to the drawing board with their saw design, which was always a little too fat, despite being otherwise well thought out.

I spoke to SOG about release dates, and they don't have anything specific just yet.  They did say that they should be along by the end of the 1st Quarter, with the Baton series in the 2nd Quarter, probably May or June.

Subject to change without notice of course.  :D

Power Grab components look just like Power Lock ones from what you can see. Looks like it would be pretty easy to take apart the Power Grab.

I wonder why we haven't seen anything from SHOT regarding the PowerAccess and PowerGrab. Seems strange that they will apparently be ready for sale by end of first quarter, but no push at SHOT. Maybe 8 new multitools was too much to release in one year? Maybe they believe that the PA and PG will "sell themselves" and that they can keep the limelight of SHOT2017 on the quirky items that they perceive as being a tougher sale? Perhaps they are just waiting until tomorrow and staging a big reveal for them? I dunno, I am anxious to see video of the new traditional multitools from SOG

Ive been wondering thatk myself rdub. I think you might be onto something with the too many tools therory, since most reviewers only seem willing to give a couple minutes to the multitool manufacturers, OG doesn't want too many cooks in the kitchen spoiling the pot, so to speak (especially since they have a fairly large new knife collection too)
Title: Re: Official Release- SOG 2017 FULL CATALOG!
Post by: rdub934 on January 20, 2017, 05:09:37 PM
SOG posted a short video on their twitter account that showed the PowerAccess and PowerGrab are on display at SHOT. But I have found no videos showcasing them. Everything has been Batons and Syncs. That is pretty disappointing, and I fear that releasing so many new tools in the same year may ultimately mean slower sales starting off as consumers have to pick and choose.

They are probably assuming the two new multis will sell themselves, so it makes sense they are showcasing the more innovative tools. I am still looking forward to some of the others but the Powergrab is on my list. I'll also be looking to replace that file with the v-cutter if possible
