Title: SOG PowerCut
Post by: Dirty Dave on November 19, 2016, 06:42:59 AM
It's been a few years since anyone discussed the SOG PowerCut  so I was wondering if anyone has ever found one.
It's my understanding that a few of the satin finished one's were released for sale but the rest that were produced ended up going to the scrap-metal bin.

I purchased this prototype at a flea market about 6 years ago. I'm told it is one-of-a-kind with the rainbow TiNi finish. My favorite M-tool.
I also have the prototype of the SwitchPlier 2.0 in my collection. 45+ SOG tools and counting.

Here are some links to older threads about the Powercut:

I don't know of anyone that actually purchased one through normal retail channels, but it seems possible that a few "escaped" * into the wild like your rainbow TiN variant.

IIRC SOG decided not to go into production because the cutting head could break off under severe strain and fly off and injure someone.

*  possibly via SOG employees or sub-contractors

I have a few prototypes myself, but mostly Leatherman.  It's nice to see some rare SOG prototypes have made it into the wild too!

The only Power cut that I know of that actually made it out into the world was the one that was made by a member here.  As I recall, SOG was trying to use a stainless steel in the head and had fracturing issues since it wasn't hard enough.  Our member ( a different Bob!) made one using a commercially available cutter out of a carbon steel.  SOG likely didn't want to use a carbon steel because of rust and warranty issues.

Beautiful collectable you have there, and I hope we get to see some more!  SOG doesn't get as much love as they deserve here, that's for sure!

It is such a shame that these never made it to market. Nice piece you have there  :salute:
