Title: Alox awl praise
Post by: AZ_Hiker on September 10, 2018, 01:15:20 AM
Used my Farmer awl to put a drain hole in a couple heavy plastic jugs today.  I'm always pleased with how well the inline awl works, a really well designed tool.

I agree.  I find it strange that it's only available on the 93's.

That awl is amazing. Putting holes in plastic is so satisfying. The holes are perfect, as if the plastic came like that.
What a shame they're only on the 93mm range. Imagine a big one of them on the 111mm range, the SwissTool, and the Spirit.
Also, why not have that awl in the 91mm range? Kinda like Wenger did with blade or file.

Such a great tool. My dad was awlways a stockman man but I gave him a farmer and SI and he rotates between them now because he prefers the awl.

Here's to the awl!

One of my fave tools - so useful. I have transplanted an awl onto around 5 91mm SAK's so far. Always in the market for some more spares to carry on the good work.

So beautiful.  :dd: And what a range of colours as well.

If I was more adventurous, I'd put one on my Deluxe Tinker.  :P

It's a pretty straightforward mod RP - it'll just drop in there. You can take some material off the spacer if you really want to but it'll work just as well without (my Greenwood has a thinned out spacer but all the rest are 'as is'). And you'll only have to remove the one pin.

+1 for the inline awl. It should be on all of them as standard

Well, that's easier said than done.  :-[
I do not have a pin punch or ball peen hammer, or brass rods, or even a spare reamer.
It being a drop-in mod is great, and gives me hope, but I doubt I will ever attempt it and risk ruining my Deluxe Tinker.

I love the Pioneer awl as too!  :salute:

Such a great tool. My dad was awlways a stockman man but I gave him a farmer and SI and he rotates between them now because he prefers the awl.

FYI, there are nice stockmans with similar awls.  This one has a much sharper tip than the Pioneer awl, and has the bevelled edge as well.  I really like the combination of sheepsfoot and awl.  Of course, you can also have that on an Electrician, but it doesn't have those wonderful carbon blades of the stockman.

I too wish the inline awl wasn't restricted to the 93mm range. It is a magnificent tool. My Soldier's awl does a better job of making holes in irrigation hoses than the dedicated tool does.  :hatsoff:

I love the 93mm awl!

It was initially one of my hang ups when switching from edcing a cadet to a pioneer. I just assumed the awl would be next to worthless.

I was definitely wrong. It comes in very handy as a backup kind of beater blade. Perfect for removgng zip ties. Of course it excels at drilling perfect holes, and just having a general purpose poking/scraping/picking tool is as useful as your imagination let's it.

Hear-hear to the awlmighty awl!  :drink:

I miss it. Carrying my Wenger 85mm tonight. Have already had to use its awl and it’s nowhere as good as the alox one!
