Title: 111mm Super Club
Post by: The Lone Wanderer on January 27, 2017, 06:47:06 AM
Any fellow 111mm enthusiasts out there? I've carried 91mm for years, and I've switched to 111mm within the last year. I don't mind the bulk at all, and I feel like it's a little overlooked line. Currently I have a Dual Pro X and a Outrider (which is also a pretty decent post apocalyptic book series, only lasted 5 books, but I digress). I plan on focusing my collection efforts on this size for the near future.

So who else wants to join the club, we have fruit punch on Saturday's!

Excellent 111mm choices you have there...

Been meaning to get a Dual Pro X myself... and add a wood saw... then maybe I can try it out for EDC

Sadly where I live we only have the Dual Pro. Two serrated blades - one of the daftest ideas ever to come out of Ibach. I got one nonetheless, thinking it looked badass, but I never use it. I prefer the minimalist Hunter XS. The one without the saw.
An old pic from last year:

I went camping with the thing below - can't remember its name - the Forester. Absolutely perfect in every way - Grandma and my wife drink wine so even the corkscrew got regular use. The blade is non-scary (and legal where I live) and the saw is long enough not to be useless - our hats and coats were lying around in heaps on our tent floor so I made us a coat stand out of branches from the nearby forest! No Chippendale but it did the job.  Even the can opener was used when some hapless lady from the next tent asked if we could help with her impregnable tin of spaghetti ("You're an adult , why in God's name are you eating spaghetti from a tin?!" - what I wanted to say but didn't.)
Anyway, after ten days I came to realise that the Forester is as close as I'm going to get to the perfect 111mm SAK. At least for camping.
Again a random photo from last year which just happens to be on my computer, and which I haven't used already elsewhere on this site.

I've got more 111mms - including not one but two Hercules - way too big for me so I am wondering which one to sacrifice for parts. I gave my Trailmaster away after putting new orange scales on it - Vic should make them that way! I've also got an OH Forester but in general I don't like the serrated blade. I had two One Hand Master RTs which I sold - because I realised I'd never use them (too precious!) and I hate having things that sit around never getting used.

I've collected many of the 91mm models I wanted and always collecting more yet I haven't been as active with the 111mm SAKs...but things are picking up.

My first one was this camoflague Outrider model 55731 which has the backside phillips like the Malaysian Army version.

The blade had a big chip out of it so I hid it by grinding serrations into the bottom portion of the blade. Well thanks to this forum and You-know-who-you-are  () I have a replacement blade for it and am going to rebuild it back to its original pattern.

I also had an Atlas that I sold when I found a cheap Hercules. I plan on getting a work champ and then selling the Hercules, but I need to decide on which version of the metal file I want. I like the post-2005 on wood, but I like the pre-2005 one on fingernails  (when a true nailfile like Classic or Sportsman isn't around) and plastic items like guitar picks

I also want a liner-lock model that's basically a Camper. Corkscrew, openers, blade and woodsaw. Not sure which blade I'd want on there.

That would be the venerable Forester, no?
The non-OH, non-serrated blade is just beautiful on that thing... if you don't have one like it, I would definitely recommend the Forester.

I sold my Workchamp, but still have quite a few 111 mm SAKs left.

I go back and forth between non-OH non-serrated for campsite food, or OH serrated for cutting rope, etc. Of course this means I must get both! Forrester first most likely.

Don't know if this is true or not, hopefully not though, the slide lock models will soon be stopped. This I remeber somebody commenting on this. Just can't remember where...

Which probably makes some sense. Just like pin diameter sizes, the openers on them slide locks are exactly the same as that of 91mm models. While the liner lock models enjoy the openers of the 93mm alox...

Do hope that more tools go on the liner locks... Say OHT X?

No, actually I can't stand mushrooms - my wife occasionally fries up some weird looking things she finds in the forest and it's like eating buttered slugs.
Last year - autumn - the whole place looked like an illustration from Alice in Wonderland. Cartoon toadstools all over the place. So yeah it's just eye candy!

111's are my favorite SAK'S. Here's some testing I started last year between serated vs non serrated 111mm. Once the weather warms up I'll be posting more test between the two.

That's sounds like what I've discovered. The serated sucks for most food prep.

I've EDC'ed an 111mm SAK since finding my first Rucksack in Bermuda in 91. As a lefty I really grew to like the slide lock models and never really jumped on the OHT bandwagon went it first came round. While I've owned many over the years I only currently have a few because I am more of a user than collector. I've recently discovered that the Rucksack is a discontinued model and that slide locks in general maybe going away. While this makes me sad, I have become a big fan of the Wenger push button lock on my current EDC a Ranger 56. In the past I've carried several Rucksacks, a Hunter, and now the Ranger.
So................can I be in your club?

Outrider is back together.  Nice weight to it.  I had forgotten.  I can see why they might want to phase  out the thinner pins at least. I had to re-do this one a second time today since the pins were bending.

So far I have three. Camo Hunter, DE GM Trekker and a Soldier. There's no way I could choose one over the other. It all depends on what I'm doing. If I need a plain edge but still want a serated blade I go with the Hunter. If I'm camping I want the Trekker. No OH hump to get in the way on the saw or can opener and the plain edge works better for wood work and food prep. For everyday urban use it's hard to beat the OHO serated blade of the Soldier.

P.S. Mad Max rocks

Ah, but it has a wood saw and those to die for scales and logo..........

I love the military Trekkers, but I find that I use my OH Nomad the most. It's lack of wood saw means it can be easily carried in a pocket and I swapped out the red/black scales for plain black, so I have the tooth pick/tweezers. Only wish it had the Phillips instead of the corkscrew......

And now, after looking more closely at the Polish Police knife, it seems to have an engraved,  blunt tipped blade with serrations at the back..

About half that stuff came from ebay; the rest from a variety of dealers. The lighters are rare. The pens are Wagner (not Wenger)(use Victorinox Classic blades) and show up fairly regularly.

I didn't find much info on this. Some sources say it's a patent for the liner lock, others say it only appears on military knives and that it's related to a NSN Number.
Do any of you have an idea?

I had the same question on my Trekker. It's a German patent number dating from 1993 to 2003.

I know for sure I have an earlier version, as the first ones were not one handed opening.
Mine has Liner lock as well. I was quite happy with that as I was not a slide lock at that time.

What I meant was the clip thing in the red circle. It looks as if that is mounted on the back of the SAK.
It's completely illogical, because there are tools on the back. But it reminded me of a brand of knives (can't remember which) that had a clip at that position.

Now that I'm looking at it again I think can be a pocket dangled. Which makes much more sense.

It is. A P7 clip on a specific length lanyard that positions it upright in my big bib pocket and I can get to it in a hurry as it's primarily a seat belt cutter for me. I don't know why but we have folks running off the road and turning over nearly every week out here in "The Big Country" (i.e. about a 100 mile circle around Abilene Texas). Also, three guys in my family were/are FD/Paramedic so I grew up safety minded.   :salute:

I'll probably eventually go with a Vic Rescue tool but for now this works....and it's a cool 111mm.  :D

I think I will give that clip a go. Might order it in the near future.

The Parachutist is indeed a cool knife. Though I always refraind from carrying it because of it's size. People here scare easily by knives. Even a 91mm raises some eyebrows.

As for the Rescue Tool, it's amazing. I haven't used it in an accident but it cuts through seatbelts like butter. Amd the one handed opening is worth gold in my opinion.
I can recommend it for sure.
(And it has StayGlow scales, I love StayGlow!)

Soldier, Sentinel w/clip, Skipper, Hunter SX, Rucksack, Forester OH, Soldier, Hunter XT w/saw, Sentinel, Workchamp.
The 111mm 3-layer is almost the perfect sized pocket knife for me. The Workchamp at 6-layers is maximum for me, but so useful I forget the size.

People are often surprised at the 111mm being SAKs, expecting something more like a 91mm 3-layer no-lock Spartan or Camper etc.

I EDC'd a 4 layer Fireman for about 6-7 years. I have several belt pouches for it, but carried it in a jacket pocket most of the time. I retired it in favor of the 93mm Carver and did notice I get less strange looks from other people.

Agreed, the Picnicker doesn't have the straight line at the bottom when opened up, follows the curve of the scales.

It was indeed a Rucksack!  Brand spankin' new, complete with sleeve and papers.    Do all of the civilian 111mm have "patent" on back of the main blade??

Since Rucksack is a German word and I need to practice my German... I made a German language video about it.  If you don't speak German you might be mildly confused and or impressed, if you do speak German you will be very disappointed.  :D

It may have been done for various special markets. Have a very vague recollection of seeing it offered in a European catalog, but can't find it in any of my catalogs. Have an equally vague recollection that the one shown came from Asia (Singapore?).

I have a half-dozen Hunters. The four shown all have the same blade markings. The blue one is an advertising knife for Edgar Marty Gipsergeschaft (plasterer) of Bennau, Switzerland. Didn't bother to dig out the RAF and D-Day versions.

If I can't find it this week, I guess I'll have to add another to my collection. Been leaning toward the Hunter XT you have or a glow Rescue Tool.

I gotta say (well, I don't gotta, but I will) that this is my least favourite 111mm colour. It looks like a coffee flavour pudding, the kind you buy once and never again.

Soft grip colors.

Top to bottom Dual Pro, Hunter XT, Trailmaster Desert, Soldier.
Nice... Now you need to get the Master RT to complete the colors

I think the desert tan looks way better than that green they use. The green on the Victorinox RangerGrip I have is an awful color.

It´s a Trailmaster, a.k.a. One Hand Trekker.
It´s the civil version of the Soldier.

I have a couple but not a collection.  I started with the idea of carrying a Fireman, then before I did I already picked up a Picnicker, Outrider and then a Hercules.  Sold off the Picnicker just recently and trying to sell off the Fireman and probably the Outrider so I can just use the Hercules when out and about hiking and such!  Who knows if I find a deal on an used Workchamp, it would probably replace the Hercules since I wouldn't need it then!

In pic:  Fireman (taken out of box for the pic), Outrider and Hercules.

I reckon the one hand opening 111 are really cool. For one, I am left handed, and the OHO feature works wonders for me.
on top of that, they are built like tanks (fitting, for the military) I have been using a reconditioned Bundeswehr army knife for years.
One of the early series, with the more compact eye, which I prefer. Looks better IMHO.
Serrations were beaten up when I got it and were ground away. New scales, and voila !

It is sitting on my desk/kitchen/dinner table and I use it all the time. Llove it !

another 111 without the OHO feature, pictured here with its little buddy.

The whole line of the blade/tang/lock liner is very elegant IMHO. and the german patent number "DBGM something" makes it really look the part : solid, serious.

Bit of a long story of how I got into 111mm. I always thought they were to big.
One item on my bucket list was to assemble my own knife in Brunnen. Well two months ago my wife and I went to Europe for 40 days. Brunnen was on the itinerary. I booked a date and time and arrived in Brunnen. We went to Ibach as I still had time for my date. There was a sale on Victorinox knives and I got this nomad for 19 Euro's. The box said Nomad but Sakwiki now calls it the (new) Picknicker.
I used nearly every tool on the tour. I had to open tins, pull corks out of wine bottles, open beer bottles, cut bread and "wurst" and last but not least make a hole in my belt because I lost 6 kilo's in the heat of France and Spain!
In Madrid I had to buy new shorts as I took only one pair. I bought those in the photo and found that they have a nomad pocket.
Now I have 6 of these pretty 111's

My guess is that blade has been reground to a plain edge, as all the GAKs I have seen have the standard forward serrations. I have seen people regrind the blades too so not outside the realm of possibilities.

My third and newest 111mm model, the Forester with walnut scales. Very pretty knife, something you'd take to a picnic or something, but I guess as soon as my next 111mm one arrives, an Outrider, I'll do a scale swap, as I for me scissors are pretty important, and width isn't a factor because I don't carry these big SAK's in my pockets anyway.

The One Handed Trekker (non-serrated) is currently my favorite 111 mm SAKs.  Mine rides in my medical kit in a cargo pocket ready to be a backup in case that's the only tool I still have.  Someday I'd like to acquire the regular Trekker and a Locksmith.

Question: the liner lock on the more modern 111 mm SAKs seems pretty solid to me.  How does the older style lock with the release on the side compare in terms of strength?

As long as you don't extremely abuse it (i.e something really dumb, like hammering on a blade), it should be no problem. I personally find the slide-lock a bit easier to release. And they have better liners. What I do like about the newer ones is better, sturdier tools and bigger pins. My favorite tool has to be the pry bar/cap lifter. I've pried nailed boards apart with it, and it didn't fail.

The pry bar/cap lifter is very good but that saw blade is just excellent. Longer reach and it is a hungry monster! It is my favorite tool on the 111mm.

My two current users, the Fireman and Outrider. Personally, in carry, and use, I don't like the OHO models. One, it's uncomfortable when using any tool but the blade. Two, it requires a bigger belt sheath that is bulkier and wider on the belt.  And, uh, three. You can't use the SD tip of the can opener in tight spaces on OHO models. OHO hole gets in the way.

Fireman is from ca. 2007. Still has the older, low-profile linerlock. I fell in love with it in 2016, when I came across it in the cabinet of the local knife store. With its age, it was destined to be a shelf queen, but I quite liked the seperate plain and serrated blades. I trashed my Soldier (really did some stupid stuff in sharpening when the serrations dulled; but I suppose Vic would replace the blade). It soon replaced the Soldier, and is still carried around the farm to this date. It also marked the time I started EDC'ing 111mms. Sucks Vic discontinued the Fireman. The Rescue Tool belt cutter would have been a major upgrade from the modified 108mm gutting blade it used.  I don't need a window breaker, or a saw for laminated glass. Not on the rescue squad or fire dept.  The Fireman gets real work done.

I had been looking into the Outrider since I got on here in 2015. Then came the linerlock model. It was always expensive, until Thunderpants did the group buy on these Bosch-branded models a few months back. Even with shipping from Germany, I saved about $30 from buying a standard Outrider. My main EDC 111mm, and it seems to find its niche with EDC and DIY type work. Scissors are good for pattern cutting and the like, while the Fireman's belt cutter is for heavy use.  And not to mention, with the eyeglass scredriver installed, it has four drivers.

Just found and started reading this thread guys - Really good - Thanks for all pics and comments :tu:
I am a big fan of the 111mm - I'd like to join the club when I get a couple of pics!!

Got this far in the thread and was disappointed not to find the vid. Did you delete it in your vid clean up El C
My German is pretty rubbish - So I was expecting to be impressed   !!  ;)

That's a lot of 111mm SAKs JM - What badge or you expecting?   ???    :pok:    ;)

You definitely favour the military, liner-lock and OHO models - eh?
EDIT: Oops - Just checked - Pretty much equal OHO vs NN !! No duals ??

Hey are there two variations in scale colour for the Garants? - Blue and slate grey? - Looks like it - Need to update the Wiki if so !!
Never knew that before - but certainly explains discrepancy in some piccies

Will post pics on the 2... need to look for it or take new pics since my phone crashed a few months back

And yes - I know it does not exist - I was just joking / trying to compliment you - with the badge comment - hence the emoticons !

Re Garant: So it is available with corkscrew or Phillips options - Is that right? And that aligns with the scale colour ?  ???
Never knew that either

Ah ah ah...

Think I got the models mixed up... The latest Garant is the blue scaled one (nomad version)... Before this model, was the Grey scaled centurion model...

Both not offered at the same time period...

This is a Victorinox Hercules, which I seldom see mentioned in this forum.  IMHO, the tools combination is quite good.

For this particular model, the linear lock is released from depressing a locking plate on one of the layers, and not from the release switch built on the scales for some of the models I have seen.

This is a Victorinox Hercules, which I seldom see mentioned in this forum.  IMHO, the tools combination is quite good.

For this particular model, the linear lock is released from depressing a locking plate on one of the layers, and not from the release switch built on the scales for some of the models I have seen.

Best, Firetower

I don't have a Hercules but I think it has one of the best tool sets for a 111mm. I gave it a nod on the "if you only had one tool ..." thread.  I'd get one.  :tu:

Visit from the store this morning to picking up the 3 111mm I had him hold. An Europen early variation Skipper with the woodsaw, a Mariner and an Adventurer.

Perhaps we'll hear your thoughts on how one of those performs in the field?

Latest addition to my 111mm gang... A modded RescueTool I did... its the one with added wood saw... Except for the scales and blade, it looks similar to the Italian Polizia Di Stato variant...(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200315/493d7fd0512a4de5631aa20cd8a69ffc.jpg)

Victorinox emailed me back on the photo I sent them...The SAK you own was sold for Corporate Market customers and was not available to the general public for retail. This SAK does not have a name, but is marketed towards Hunters or Fishermen as it has a gutting blade (the short curved blade) included in the components. Sincerely....
So thats kinda cool. I can see the main blade, the woodsaw, and the gutting blade...but the shackle key just throw me off completely.

Not only a shackle key, it´s a marlin spike / sacking needle as well. The 111mm Skipper and Helmsman also have one.

Second 111mm and love it. First one 2 layer cheese knife, great as well. Best layer in outrider maybe scissors plus small phillips. Understood this is a smallest 111mm with scissors. I would get 3 layer if would be available. So without a saw. As for edc really not must. For outdoors usually have more then edc.

Second great upon 91mm is larger locking flat. So with blade and flat these are reasons to update from 91mm to 111mm for me. You can do same. But with this I feel can do same thing better. So size does matter. But still for me Ok size to pocket carry. Actually better then expected. So have only one tool. I have carried larger blade and smaller keychain tool. But this as one tool to replace two seems to be easier carry. Even maybe more weight then example cheese knife plus LM squirt.

Plus as well that blade is not at edge. Without saw it would be in middle. Now almost middle.

But why 4 layer is Ok? Cork screw is with saw. And for that can get a fire ant kit. Back of the saw is great to fire a fire stick. So this fourth layer, saw plus cork screw is actually quite good add on. For bushcraft. So for those tasks this is a good carry.

For my edc can opener tool to look next. Emergency larger phillips. Could be better for that. Wenger style opener better to work as package opener. Small flat should be small so this is not great but will do in some cases. One thing it is great for is to snap open things. Add image from this. So no need to use blade. One big plus with multitools that no need to risk a blade to tasks.

So overall. Very good set of tools. And a longer size will make tasks easier as simple as cut bun. Still with EDC want to have scissors. So outrider is quite much best option have found. And sure will get a lot of usage.

I can say this chisel ground in cheese knife does cut better then normal. Sure half serrated as well will help. But also straight part one sided. Usually avoided these but seems to work very well for some tasks. I could think easy to sharpen as well. Yet no need to.

I really like Victorinox style to make half serrated blade, usually serrations are near tang but Vic did 2/3 to tip. its much easier to whittle when near tang has straight part but still have serration
