Title: The Incredible Three-Piece Multipurpose Hatchet Tool
Post by: J-sews on March 11, 2007, 06:31:25 PM
I think it is safe to say that everyone was caught by surprise. Even in an industry that is defined by constant innovation and development, nobody expected this. A colossal leap forward that caught the giants in the multitool field napping, and a remarkable device that has set the internet knife and tool forums abuzz. Yes, that’s right, I’m talking about the Incredible Three-Piece Multipurpose Hatchet Tool!!

Created by skilled craftsman in southern China, then sold through select distributors in Hong Kong, acquiring one of these highly sought-after pieces of kit is limited exclusively to people with internet access and $10 in their PayPal account. With high-tech capabilities that appeal only to a narrow range of professionals, The Incredible Three-Piece Multipurpose Hatchet Tool is most certainly not an EDC item for everyone.

The most obvious feature of the tool is the incredibly useful hatchet head itself. Paul Bunyan-esque in both size and weight, it is capable of felling large timber in a single swipe. Opposite of the hatchet edge is a hammer claw, useful for pulling railway spikes and other large or stubborn nails. Never mind that there is no hammer head or other means for driving said nails in, this is a device geared towards disassembly and demolition.

Attachment of the large head to the two handles is accomplished with two spring-loaded ball detents. That’s right; no screws, no welds, no bolts. Just a click and a snap and it’s ready to go. Should the sharp hatchet head and claw go flying off towards your coworkers during use, simply retrieve it from their body, wipe off the blood, and snap it back into place. It’s that easy!

Built into the hatchet head are a pair of needlenose pliers, tapered to a point at the end to allow access into hard-to-reach areas. Crimpers, serrated jaws, and wire cutters are all precision cast and available features of these jaws. Disassembled, the lower jaw tips are ground somewhat to resemble flathead screwdrivers.

The removable handles of the Incredible Three-Piece Multipurpose Hatchet Tool are a masterpiece of engineering. All blades lock, using the old Leatherman SuperTool method, and lock-up is secure. When you wish to release a locked blade, the idea is to simply open a neighboring blade, which releases the lock.

However, with blade-clumping being a regular and every-single-time occurrence, it is quite common to have the entire clump of blades hopelessly locked in the open position. Here is where the detachable handle feature really shines, as you can use the screwdriver blade in one handle to jimmy the stuck lock and release the blades in the other handle. Wow, these guys thought of everything!

And not to be overlooked, the entire tool is housed comfortably in a nylon and Velcro sheath that hangs securely at your side. Compact and discreet, it is hardly noticeable until you need it.
One sleeve for each handle, and a third sleeve for the hatchet head, the entire tool can be assembled and ready for use in only a few minutes. (Disassembly is even quicker and easier!)

Good:
Only multitool available with hatchet and nail puller available in the same unit.
Top quality cast-and-belt-sanded construction throughout.
Blade clumping is so convenient; no fumbling for one blade at a time when you really want several.
Shockingly quick and easy to disassemble.

Not so good:
Obtainable from Hong Kong only. Not available (yet) in check-out lanes at Wal-Mart.

Dimensions:
Length       7-3/4”
Width          3-1/4”
Thickness      5/8”
Weight      13.5 oz / 375 grams

Feel free to assume lots of these rolly-eyed sarcasm icons as you read this.  ::)  I should have used about 50 of them in this review, but I didn't want to bog down members who have only dial-up connections....... :D

The Elsener family and Tim Leatherman are all still recovering from the shame and embarassment that they didn't hit the market with this prize winning innovation first

since the tool is an ALL in one, maybe he should also be a she, and be the villain, hero, victim and comic sidekick, all in one.
