My son hunts them and does a good job of it.  I've never been out enough to feel confident that what I picked would be edible. Nice pics guys!!

Here in Switzerland the mushroom season begins.
Like pop-ups everywhere mushrooms come from the ground.

I would love to be more knowledgeable about mushrooms, whenever i find a Boletus though it always has little maggots in it, i know you can probably eat them safely enough but they kinda put me off, i rarely find the same worms in a Chanterelle, or they hide better... is there a trick to finding them before the maggots do?

The trick is to be faster than the maggots.
The younger the mushroom the rarer are maggots in it

I suppose that makes sense, go to your spot regularly and see what ones are new, i don't actively go looking for them, just if i stumble on them but by that time its too late, this year i will try again and go more regular  :tu:

I live 100 meters next to the forest and often go inside. So I see automatically whether it is worth to look for mushrooms.

Found today after breakfast:

My uncle found a fantastic spot just outside of town where lots of morels grew and we used it for years, until it eventually was discovered by others. Now people pick it clean as soon as the things sprout.  :-\

We sometimes have that problem when people from other nations go mushroom picking in Australia, some of the more deadly ones look very similar to the edible ones found in Europe and Asia.

I know only the german word for the shown mushroom - Safranschirmling (Chlorophyllum rachodes) and if I'm right from the picture it would be edible.

I live in the desert so Shrooms are rare unless you buy one of the homegrow mycelium kits. Not even much in the way of cactus fruit out here. Plenty of Desert Gooseberries though, they taste alright. No berry pic thread though.

You have to go some distance now to get lesser traveled woods where one might find untouched mushrooms. Areas outside of my town that I don't know well, and am not super comfortable exploring. For one thing I don't know who owns which plots of land out there and I don't want to accidentally trespass on private property. For reasons ranging from stepping in traps, to mistakenly stealing owned mushrooms, to stumbling on well armed marijuana farmers. But then the safer areas are well traveled enough that you can't find anything worth collecting.

I don't know any other options to explore currently

Uh, sounds complicated. But mushroom hunting is not the world, just one of countless leisure activities.
I live 100meter next to the forest, love to be in the forest since my childhood.
I learned the mushroom hunting from my father, now I teach it to my son.

Today we found and eaten these:

One day i hope to go out into the woods with my little stove, a pan, some butter and some olive oil, find some shrooms, fry them up and sit back and enjoy them with a little glass of wine, but not today..
i think these are some sort of Honey fungus, best avoided i think

It has been found that the poisonous mushrooms are capable of using an edible mushroom as a host.

You think you are having a tasty bite then ....Kablamo!...  :D

I don´t know, wouldn´t eat a mushroom anyway. There are over 3000 species around here and I know only a few. Typically, edible mushrooms have several inedible look alikes.

I enjoy many kinds of mushrooms, but it's kind of a ridiculous foodstuff: It has hardly any nutritional value, it has highly poisonous varieties, and many of the edible varieties are carcinogenic if eaten without heat treatment. So... it's risk without any other gain than the taste. At least fugu and rakfisk are nutritious. :)

You do it right, if you're not sure, let it be.
I know about 20 good edible mushrooms which have no inedible double.

Mushrooms have no high nutritional value, right. But many people tend to have the opposite problem:
we eat too much food with high nutrition. For me, the true value of mushrooms is the relaxation
while walking in the forest, coming down from the stress and right,
all the delicious tastes you can not buy anywhere.
Risk? What is the risk? I know people who eat plants. (Me too)  ;)
And there are much more toxic plants than mushrooms. The important thing is to know what you eat!

I know all the really toxic mushrooms and about 40 edible mushrooms in my area.
Never eat a mushroom if I am not absolutely sure that it is edible.
With plants, fruits and berries, I do exactly the same.

I couldn´t find an English name for this one.
The Dutch name translates to Silver Tree Pillow (scientific name Enteridium lycoperdon).
Together with Pioneer Solo.

Our family picks a lot of chanterelles every year, the season starts late may in Finland though, forests still have snow all around there. Still some in the freezer though, they make for a delicious sauce with bacon, great pies as well.

So it is! This one from last Sunday. I used the Opinel #10 sickle to get rid of some undergrowth before taking the pic and then forgot to put a SAK in the pic.

Known as ´chicken of he woods´, this mushroom (Laetiporus sulphureus) is edible when young. I didn´t harvest it though, I don´t eat mushrooms.

Make that certain death. The fungus eats the tree (an oak) from the inside out.

Good luck! Those are some very expensive mushrooms! May you only grow the big heavy ones! I didn’t realize they were so expensive until I saw the movie “No Reseverations”

Depends on the type of truffle, black perrigo truffle (Tuber melanosporum) and the white truffle (Tuber magnatum) have a high market value, and are also difficult to grow, as they will only grow under very specific conditions. Other truffles like the black summer truffle (Tuber aestivum) are pretty common, inexpensive and will grow pretty much everywhere. Doesn't taste as nice as a black perrigo, but they are great for cooking too.  :)

I guess its similar to the difference between Caspian Beluga Carviar (aka, Russian Caviar) and..well..pretty much any other caviar out there.

But back to truffles, I am not planing on making any big business out of it, as I don't have a big property to set up a large enough trufflerie, it also can take 3-5 years to really grow some big ones, and even that is not guaranteed. So it will mainly just be more of a hobby thing that I will have going on.  :)

Reading on another thread, it was suggested that the IPad would be a great item to have in your BOB...because of the the ability to store books. Books = information. The type of information that could save your life. There are a lot of PDF’s out there. One that I have added is on mushrooms!
Common Edible Mushrooms by Clyde M. Christensen. He is a professor at the University of Minnesota. It is 142 pages of what not to eat and the ones that are, with photos.
Great photos Ron.

Interesting one this, ok its not really a mushroom but this Hair ice is only possible thanks to a fungus, it only happens to certain woods at a certain temperature in certain weather, i wouldn't call it super rare but it's not something you will see every day  :tu:

I've seen this in the past. Assuming they were white hairy fungi.
A couple of days ago they made the news and it's actually ice formed by moist air coming from the fungi.
Really amazing.

Yeah it is amazing, when i was a kid i used to try and pick it up and was puzzled how it would vanish as soon as you touched it, how could it possibly be frost where there is no other frost around and rising up like very thin hair,  it wasn't till many years later i found out what it was  :tu:

I always assumed it was a fungus. When I walked the dog in the morning they would be there, and during the afternoon they would be gone. That did puzzle me on occasion, but I'm no mycologist and figured it was a species that only appeared at night.

In theory, mushroom season starts here, but it's a bit too dry. Some types of mushrooms come anyway.

Finally, after a long, hot, dry summer it rained for several days in my part of northern bavaria.  :woohoo:

So on monday, 3rd october, the national holiday in germany (re-unification of east and west germany and such), we took a trip to a nearby village. My gf went on the traditional flea market around the village, and I scouted the nearby woods, an area we know since 25 years.

Lots of photographic activity followed, combined with mushroom-cutting etc. Around noon, we phoned for a meeting point and time, re-united  , had our usual picnic and lunch in the car, emptied my collected mushrooms into a foldable box in the car boot, and went filling our basket again... :2tu:

Since then we feasted three times on our findings and gifted several fungi to interested co-workers. Next week starts our three weeks holiday, and we're looking into further raids  :gimme:

Hey Wolfgang. Beautiful photos and a successful harvest!

Hope I can pick a good portion of mushrooms this year too.
Have nice autumn holydays

Thanks, Sneider!

Best wishes for a successful hunt!  :salute:

If it works in uber-dry franconia, Switzerland should face no problems in this realm.  :tu:

Thanks, FarmerX!

I'm always amazed at the heavy snap of the Alox Solo. It really goes "klonk".  :ahhh

But most of the mushroom cutting in the field was done with my Benchmade Bugout mini (in don't-lose-me orange), but that didn't fit into the SAK forums ...  :dunno:

This afternoon, with the fading daylight, I still had a little time to keep an eye on the forest.
Everything full of old, maggot mushrooms, relatively few fresh ones and when they did, the snails and maggots were usually faster than I.  :-[
Anyway, I found something edible. Delicious side dish.  :)
