Title: Opening layer/ inline Phillips mod question
Post by: 4everYoung on March 03, 2017, 04:22:52 PM
I'm planning a future mod in my head and I'd like to add an inline Phillips but don't want the mag glass. In the interest of keeping the layer count down, I'd like to combine the openers into one spot opposite the inline Phillips.
Question is, what all is involved in that? Do I use the IP spring layer and add the openers on the other side. Do I need a spacer between the openers? Or is this something that needs custom work?
I've never modded a SAK before but am willing to give it a shot. I just would like to know what I need to be looking for as far as spare SAKs to hack up.
Thanks in advance for the insight.

It works(with a little grinding) on 93mm alox.

91mm though...
Much harder, I don't even know if anyone has done it.  :-\

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference?

The springs. It can only be done with the alox springs, which are incompatible with 91mm frames.

Its doable if you mean the means to make your own springs, I believe, but not many have that means.

Ahh this sounds like Syph007's patented and famous 2in1 layer...

This requires 2 opener layers to allow the bottle and can opener to sit on one side and the inline phillips on the other (with spacers on each side of the IL phillips due to difference in thickness). Flip one opener backspring so that the bottle opener can sit beside the can opener. The inline phillips pivot area needs to be grinded to the shape of the bottle opener.

Flipping the spring on 93mm is not difficult as the distances between the outer pins and the middle pin is equal.

Not the case for the 91mm springs... I think this is one of the reasons why mods like this hasn't been done yet. To add to the complication, 91mm opener springs are designed to accomodate back tools.

I haven't attempted to do this kind of mod on 91mm models. Hopefully, more experienced and seasoned modders will share their views.

Also would be interested to see how you progress.

An alternative that I can think of is to put the can opener on the blade layer and eliminate the small blade... and put the bottle opener in place of the mag glass.. Spacers maybe needed. Don't know if this doable but its worth a try...

But keepin the layer down wont be achieved...

I have always wanted a SAK with this feature as well.

So what I'm gathering is on the 91mm frame I stuck with an extra layer if I want an inline Phillips.

How about a combo tool with the Inline Phillips?
Would that work?

Combo tool is the thickness of small blade, and do you mean opposite or beside the inline philips?

Opposite.

I guess I should divulge my plan. Basically I like the tool layout of the mechanic but I don't like the back side Phillips. Honestly I do t really care for back side tools anyway.
So I was wanting to mod a mechanic or deluxe tinker with inline Phillips.

My ideal SAK would be 91 or 93mm main blade. Inline awl or small blade.
Pliers
Scissor(possibly but I've come to appreciate the 58mm scissors so I'm undecided on them )
Inline Phillips and inline flathead.
That would be either a 3 or 4 layer depending on scissors.

Next question. Could I use the bottle opener on a 91mm plus a spacer on the same layer as a inline Phillips?
That would give me and inline flat driver

Either the combo tool or bottle opener should work.. definitely need spacers as the IL phillips is thicker... may also need to tweak a bit the spring or tool pivot... i've seen some mods similar to this... in the sak mods thread I think...

One question. If you do this on 91mm, would you be fine with keeping backtools even if you won't use them?  :)
If yes, that makes your 91mm plan much easier.

Assuming yes, the only real tricky bit with your plan, scissors or no scissors, lies with the inline philips layer, specifically, regarding the bottle opener opposite the inline philips.
Anyone know more about this bit? The bottle opener tang is as different as can be from the magnifying glass tang, so I have doubts about it fitting.

If you go with 93mm, you need a bunch of doner knives and(if including scissors) a pioneer X.

I'm not opposed to having backtools I just don't like to use them. So that's really a non issue for me.
As for the the 93 mm, I do have a pioneer X already.
I'm not a collector so..... it's all in the table at this point.

So as far as I know/understand:

For 91mm,  you want the bottle opener opposite the inline philips. I don't know how that would go, so better wait for someone with modding experience to explain how to do it.  :)
This way would need the least amount of doner knives.

If you decide to go with 93mm, the pliers will need two farmer saw springs(I think?).
Your pioneer X already has the scissors.
You can use, as jaya_man explained, two opener springs to put both the can and bottle openers opposite the inline Philips. :)
This way, you need 4 doner knives in total, less if you can get parts somewhere.
I warn you, preening alox rivets will be difficult, as I understand, and experience would be VERY useful.

Whew, I think thats all my feeble knowledge can provide.  :salute:

Well I've got a couple Swiss champs I'm watching on eBay. I figure a cheap SC will make a good knife to remove layers and not have to source pin stock.
It has everything that I'm looking for in the tool set.

The only alternative to the mag glass that is possible is a 93mm bottle opener.  But its takes significant reshaping and you have to relocate the pivot hole.  If you hold that part over top of a mag glass part you can get an idea of how it needs to be shaped.

The 91mm opener doenst have enough material to reshape into a mag glass replacement.

The phillips across from dual openers is not possible on 91 due to the backsprings AND there isnt enough space the phillips would hit the openers.

So this sounds like I'm gonna have to embrace the mag glass in order to get the Phillips.

The mag glass is one of those cool tools. :D

Well I don't have anything against the mag glass I just doubt I would really use it. It's like the saw, or file, nice if you needed them often (which I don't). So when I do need them I will carry a tool with that load out.
I'm just trying to make an edc SAK. But looks like now the mag glass is important part of that.

I think the answer is to go 93mm. The inline phillips fits nicely across from the openers, 93mm blade across from awl, and Pliers on saw springs

This is my custom by Syph with the 93mm bottle opener across from the 91mm inline phillips. It also has the 93mm awl, 93mm blade, and 91mm metal saw/file. Figure I can cut through just about anything with it. The 91mm pliers seem more like glorified tweezers than usable pliers, which is why I skipped them. I also am not a scissor user. Anyway, no keychain attachment and no backside tools.  All function. Love this tool.  It's got titanium scales and cost a pretty penny, but it should last a lifetime.

Man, that's exacly what I'm looking for. Would you mind to explain how did you manage to fit phillips and bottle opener together? What backspring did you use, do you have to grind something or it just fit?

Unless you’d find the led light useful? That is designed to fit opposite the Phillips in 91! A ‘mechanic light’ could be cool!
