Well, here it is:

It's a GAK with different scales. Or is it the other way around?

Heck, start buying up the 2008 Soldiers, those are likely the last of the line. What's Wenger going to do? Are they going to make them under contract,or be left out in the rain?

This is just sad. I mean, I have nothing against the OHT/GAK, but I was hoping for something more exciting than different scales. Now, if the scales were alox, it would have been something...

:( Indeed, it's nothing special.  Shame really.

IIRC Micky earlier posted that he came across the rumor that the Farmer would be discontinued, but right now,I'm too tired and lazy to search.Maybe there is some substance to the rumor after all.

I don't think it was so much a rumour as just speculation on what would happen with this change from alox.

On the plus side, at least it's still a Vic!

And while it does look the part, it's hardly different, but then I guess that keep's the cost's down so the Army continued to buy it :)

And Bob I think Bill started the rumour, and I'm inclinde to belive there's something in it :(, certainly Wenger's not going to have much call for keeping there excellent SI in production

Unfortunately, I think that's a given. I really prefer having a bail like on the SI too...

Yep it look's like last order's

Which is a shame as I always felt the SI was a much better Sak to the Soldier :-\

This is from SOSAK forum and to me it makes a lot of sense. ;)

People compare the alox knives to the old GAK's.

I think that's unfair. The older GAK, in my view, was a smaller share of the market. The size was right but there we not many variations on the design.

On the other hand we have alox. There are several models of alox knives. So there is a larger market, and a greater love for them.
Additionally, since the government order for alox Soldiers was a small portion of Victorinox total sales, and likely a small portion of all alox knives even in production, I see no reason why Vic would discontinue the entire alox product range just because a small portion of it is no longer needed by the government.

Yea, I had a gift certificate to Sportsman's Warehouse and I've wanted to have a few extra Soldier's (they have always reminded me of the old Boys Scout Knives I had as a kid) and I wanted a couple to give to me kids and they were only $23.00 each so.... alright, I really don't have much of an excuse! >:D

I hate to say "I told you so" but....

Ah-hem (http://www.sosakonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=213&Itemid=35)

I let this one go for a while because I wanted to see what people thought of it before chiming in, but I for one am not surprised in the slightest.  And, if anyone read the above article, I doubt they would have been surprised either!   :pok:

The only doubt I really had about it was the possibility, however slight, that Wenger's new Ranger model was going to attract the attention of the military.  Honestly I didn't see it happening, but there was a possibility, and with Wenger's new release of the OHT-like Ranger (I can never remember the numbers! :P) I thought there was a chance.

It remains to be seen whether Wenger will play a part in the new military contract or not, and in what capacity if they do.  I have an email into my contacts at Wenger and will let you know anything I find out.

We first heard about this back in August 2007 (at least us on SOSAK)
http://www.sosakonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=213&Itemid=35OSAKonline)

Now that we have waited a little over a year to hear the news, all the new knife gets is a couple, three pages.

I think that it (the new knife) is a major let down.  Nothing against OHTs I love them but this was going to be something new and fresh and different.

I think its true.

We were all waiting for the next evolution in SAK's....and it turns out to be "just" an OHT.

Also, if you haven't heard, a SOSAK member contacted Vic.

The Alox Soldier will be discontinued, so get em NOW.

The Alox Pioneer, essentially a Soldier with a key ring, will remain in production.

The SI status is unknown to me at this time.

Sounds like there will be both old and new '08 Soldiers.
Naturally, most of us will require both.
