After completing a deal with another member on here and sending him my postage address via pm the anti swear setting almost got me again. My town name contains a swear word and the anti swear changes that portion of it to smurf.
When I first ran into it the other member had written it on the parcel and was there about to mail it when I saw what had happened. Thankfully he saw the pm correcting it in time otherwise the royal mail over here would be wondering where Ssmurfthorpe is.
Can words be added to the filter to ignore? If so can I request my home town is added to the filter please. My home town is Scun thorpe (without the space).

There is a way to trick the smurf filter.
Scunthorpe
put an empty tag in the middle of the word. Scu[tag][/tag]nthorpe
It doesn't show up but breaks the "swearword" up and the filter doesn't see it

I'm sorry, but I have to say that I find this hilarious. I mean, it wouldn't be very funny if you had lost a package as a result, but I can imagine how funny it would be when the postal clerk who had to sort all of this out realized that it said SMURF!
As for the swear filter, it is set to find naughty words in bigger words like mothersmurfer and smurfface, smurfsucking smurfweasel and dogsmurfing smurfblister. Boy I hope it catches all of those...
It's unfortunate that you have this problem, and I'll look into it (translation, I will make Whoey look into it) and see if anything can be done, but I think the only way to manage it is to remove the offending word from the filter.

No problem, if it means removing the word from the filter then it's not worth the bother. I'd rather see smurf, it's much nicer and funnier.
I'd have been a tad miffed if it had got lost, it was either for a charge AL or a wave. So either going missing would have sucked.
-
Bwahaha! This is hilarious! Glad you caught it first and that nothing ended up getting lost in the post :tu:

Maybe it can be disabled for PM

I could see that being the worst case scenario. I don't want to out myself on the disagreement thread, but I'm going to bludgeon with smurfdom where no one else can see.

Whatever the settings are, we can always use rough language in our own tongue.
In fact, such language is called by my people "Γαλλικά", literally "French". And a popular joke is using smurf words with German of Italian ending and pronounciation. Such us "smurfen" or smurfini". Many French or Italian smurf words were used in the past in place of Greek ones, because - perhaps- they seamed more polite. The outcome was that we now use those those words everyday instead of the original ones, mixed with some Greek word roots with Italian endings.
Both are true because no word is really offensive outside its own cultural and linguistic context. After prolonged use it is absorbed in the language though and things change.
-
That is amusing. In English when someone uses foul language they often cover it with "pardon my French."
I always wondered who was responsible for that, and now I know we have the Greeks to blame!

I typed something that made it past the filter. When I saw what happened I edited my post so as not to be some potty-mouthed jerk. You only had a few seconds to see it. So while you did miss it, it was nothing worth noting.
-
Not much make it past the smurf filter :o
-
I think it was because of the hyphenation.
-
It's ok- we aren't the kind of site that would get our collective undies in a bunch about it. My way of looking at it is that we are a bunch of people that use tools, and in tool using environments bad words are kind of a given. My father was a combat engineer and swore at everything he worked on.
We try to keep the place family friendly- I figure if you are comfortable letting your 7 or 8 year old kid visit here than that's pretty much what we are after. And I don't know too many 7-8 year old kids that aren't aware of, if not proficient in foul language.
They slip through from time to time- I appreciate you fixing it, but if they get through, like they do in many images in the Meme thread, it's no big deal. :D

-
That makes sense. I'll conduct myself accordingly. I just wanna be one of the cool kids.
-
What's really funny is when you start realising that you are starting to use "smurf" in real life.
Peyo's lawyers are going to have a field day with us sometime.... :serverloft:

Everytime I drive into my town I see Ssmurfhorpe instead of the proper name because of this place, still makes me chuckle

"Who put the **** in Scunthorpe?" is something that's been said around this neck of the woods for a very long time. However, nobody ever seems to ask about Penistone or Clitheroe :D

It could be worse...
