I'm gonna take this opportunity to become more familiar with my butter blade, in lieu of the plain edge I typically prefer.

The butter blade is really quite good for general purpose cutting. Even tasks that you think could only be done with the spear point blade such as starting a bore hole in something can be done with the first "tooth" of the serrated, "Butter blade." Only thing that's a problem are plunge cuts because it is hard to stab the butter blade into anything.

Yeah, it is. The BO on the CC X is shinier and seems closer to a DLC (though I'm sure it's not). The S looks blacker and more matte.Matte finish looks cool... cc X is the recently released one?

I had to refuse due to challenge guidlines so with a grimace she asked my daughter for her Explorer instead. She is looking forward to the end of the year :D

I can't take credit for the idea, I saw it somewhere else. It was really easy, just force the scissors open past the spring then grind down the little nub (technical term). Then pop back into place and you have marginally wider opening scissors! :think:

The Spirit has been helping me opening bags and mail but not much else, It's an awesome tool but I'm not that keen on the scissors. I should probably have gotten the regular Spirit (S) instead of the XC but that wasn't really an alternative when finding it second hand.
Here the Spirit is pictured with a Camper I put together, the scales were glued on during the night. I had a Huntsman minus scissors laying around and a friend wanted larger blades, openers and saw to complement her Classic. And who am I not to fuel such a want, we're all enablers here, right?

Handling hot stuff is a great reason to carry a pliers-based tool IMO. Actually used the Spirit earlier to pull out an oven rack, but no camera nearby. :oops:

I've been away during the day celebrating a birthday (gifted: Victorinox Tinker) and the most used tool has been the cap lifter. The cap lifter is a sturdy piece that feels truly dependable. I don't know what happened with the picture to make it look like a satin finish but there it is.

I love the thick cap lifter. Great for liftin' caps, screwin' screws, and pryin' stuff what needs pryin'!

I used the scissors a bit today and i find it hard to believe that the company that gave us these also gave the world some of the best scissors in their size. These open unreasonably small and the ergonomics just aren't there. The way I hold them in my picture seems to me to be the "natural" way to grip them, seeing how well my index finger holds the tool in place while my thumb does the cutting. But the way the cutting edges are made means they are meant to be held the other way around in a way that means that 1. I don't get as good a grip of the tool. and 2. I use the fairly sensitive inside of my index finger joint to move the thin steel handle.
That said the butter blade that comes with the tool is really nice for Swedish carry since Swedish knife law seems to basically only take intent into action. It's hard to claim that you chose that blade with criminal intent... (disclaimer, this seems to be what the law says but might not be how it is supposed to be interpreted).

Interesting to hear about the scissors. I sometimes wonder about getting a Spirit with scissors as they're things I need every day but I'd probably regret it if they are really rubbish.
Am I better off just sticking to the scissors on a Classic? (I have a nice Alox Classic so it's not like a big burden.)

I would say that the Classic is a far better pair of scissors but I believe that the Spirit is meant to be able to tackle stiffer stuff in keeping with the more heavy duty style. I had almost no trouble cutting a zip-tie with it for example, something I believe the Classic would have struggled with. So I guess it depends on what you want tu cut with them.
Nails: Classic wins hands down. Zip-ties: Spirit wins. Small threads etc: Probably a tie.

I've just been cutting zip ties with my Spirit - at least on the heavy duty ones, the pliers do a great job.(I also had to use the pliers for getting some shattered old style light bulbs out of their sockets... We have about 200 metres of 15 watt bulbs on our little Xmas market and every year about 2 dozen go pop!)
It's not often I really need pliers but when you need them, nothing else will do. I would have chopped my fingers to bits on those broken lightbulbs today, had I not had my Spirit with me.

I find the Spirit scissors are more like mini snips than scissors. They're stiffer and more positive than on a 91mm SAK (or the Swisstool, for that matter) and although they don't open very wide, how often do you actually need to cut really thick material? I do find the left-handedness of the scissor frustrating sometimes, but really only when I'm cutting my nails - and the Rambler on my keys works much better for nails anyway.
If you want to widen the scissors it's a pretty easy mod to do.
Just used the Spirit's scissors to cut a thin ribbon for my christmas tree decorations and it works good. But for my nails I prefer the scissors on my Manager.

My Spirit and one of my Myerchin Titanium rigging knives that sometimes accompany the Spirit. Even with the marlin spike these knives are so light that you can forget they're in your pocket, and when you've chewed your fingernails down to the nub because you've had a nervous week you can use the marlin spike on the rigging knife to open the implements on the Spirit. :twak:

Nice pictures guys! The Spirit is working out really well for me, I'm not a heavy tool user so the Spirit makes much more sense than the regular SwissTool. I'm even getting used to the butter blade, I usually prefer a plain edge but I'm not in the same way looking for a nice edge in a multitool, more a workhorse of a knife and the butter blade does that very well. I did some light touch ups since the previous owner had been rather harsh on the serrations (nothing left of the one at the point) but I'm not really certain on how to rebuild serrations.

I almost never use it to open cans but I end up using the can opener quite a bit. It's an excellent Lego-pryer-aparter! :D
I also just used the blade to open a bag of salt for the driveway. We're getting our first snow of the year.

Day 8. The crew have started prostrating themselves in front of what they are calling 'The Shining Goddess' in the hope that food and treats will be delivered on a daily basis. I've tried telling them that we already have food and Yule is on it's way but they just look at me as if I am a small child. ::) Still, it keeps them quiet, (apart from the low murmering while they chant), and occupied which is always a positive.

If the Swiss tools were as adaptable and easily taken apart as the SOG powerlocks they probably wouldn't be as durable, but the possibilities would boggle even Obi1. Still, it would be pretty nice if the frames and tools were sold separately so you could build them with whatever you wanted. :pok::like: :like:

Back on topic the drivers on the Spirit are really nice, with good reach and nice sizes. Is it enough though? Philips are getting less common and flats are getting positively rare on new things. The only way to accommodate all the modern shapes is through the use of bits and it doesn't seem like any of the big four have really found the solution for that. With the new Gerber Center-Drive they now have for distinct solutions for the same problem, all with their own pros and cons.
I believe SOG has the cleanest solution with their PowerPlay and Reactor but from reviews it seems like there is a long way to go to an actually useful tool. Victorinox simply drops the pretence of a multitool solution and admits that once you start carrying a bit kit a small dedicated ratchet might be the reasonable solution. Gerber have been going out on a limb in their advertisement for the Center Drive since it's certainly not the first centred drive (SOG has that honour) and is in fact not even centred! Leathermans proprietary solution is really nice and allows you to carry plenty of bits in a small space, until you realise the price of replacing a single bit (especially in Europe). Their older Tool Adapters are probably just as interesting imho, allowing you to use the main multitool as a handle for better grip to get a truly centred driver (this is what the SOG solution wanted to be, except without the extra bulk).

Bonnie is a Sloughi/whippet cross. Sloughi are arabian greyhounds - featured in Egyptian and cave art dating back as far as 6000BCE - she's super fast and very affectionate with family though a little standoffish with strangers, and very playful. Unlike most other sight hounds, Sloughi are guard dogs as well as hunters and are /were used to chase down gazelle, rabbits, jackals and ostriches.

They are worth the wait, meanwhile the Spirit becomes more indispensable, that's my experience anyway. :tu:

I enjoyed Lost initially, but it became a chore towards the end. I had to keep watching it trying to get a sense of closure. At least you can binge watch on netflix so you're not wasting 3 years of your life waiting for that resolution. It's probably better if you binge watch because you won't forget stuff and then you're sitting there wondering what is going on half the time. The forgetting what was going on was especially bad between seasons because it was one of those shows where they took almost a year between seasons.

I'll post a picture of my carry these winter days. The red strap on the light is elastic and helps hold it in place when I use it as front light for my bike. Since I have a suit jacket on against the cold (multiple layers of wool works well for the kind of temperatures I face here (worst I've had is -25° Celsius)) I bring full size pens instead of the Fisher Bullet that I usually carry.

Wrapping presents! It's incredibly hard to hit the shutter button on a camera while cutting wrapping paper with the Spirit scissors. I like these scissors normally, but the standard Victorinox 91mm scissors are easier to use on gift wrap.

I too find myself not using the Spirit enough to really warrant a month of pictures (this is why I carry a much smaller and lighter tool normally). But I would like to address these holes here, I know, they are for the corkscrew, but seriously? The corkscrew only? Why did they bother? I saw the topic in the Mod-squad about the carry-loop but why is there no more official uses for these? An carry solution using them? A bit driver? Anything really, it seems like some engineer at Victorinox had a good idea but then nobody wanted to make anything more out of it.

I think the Pruner is my favourite Alox... Farmers are too bulky, Pioneers are 50% useless (awl & can opener? No thanks) but the Pruner gives you a scary blade that you just don't see on many Vics.

This is my one gripe with the Spirit (although actually more about UK blade law). I know it's highly unlikely I would get any police attention, it's just not worth the risk.

Dec 14Agree that blade is great. Again disagree about pioneer :) I like awl, one of the most used tools for me. Again can opener does some philips jobs etc. I think pioneer has best awl that used in this type of tools.

But that is great that we have different opinions. And different options. One thing I have noticed, if I only have blades I use those to tasks not ment. So openers and awl will save my blades from misuse.

Whoops, my mistake - I said Pruner when I meant Rancher. I also find 2 blades too minimalist.

Opened a can of cashews. The Spirit's pliers are good for picking up / grabbing fine items like the seal on this can. My fingers could find no purchase. You can see some lonely and jealous multi-tools in the background there...

I too find myself not using the Spirit enough to really warrant a month of pictures (this is why I carry a much smaller and lighter tool normally). But I would like to address these holes here, I know, they are for the corkscrew, but seriously? The corkscrew only? Why did they bother? I saw the topic in the Mod-squad about the carry-loop but why is there no more official uses for these? An carry solution using them? A bit driver? Anything really, it seems like some engineer at Victorinox had a good idea but then nobody wanted to make anything more out of it.

I was thinking (in another thread :think:) that someone could come up with a detachable clip that would fit that spot, it wouldn't be too difficult for some of the modders here. It might take some trial and error fabricating to get it right, and would have to be bent in a way that it would be tight to the side of the handle, but it looks like it could be done to me... ???

More tool shots from me. I admit, I have never actually used the saw on any multitool for real, from my tests they are great but it's just one of those cases where I have more than enough dedicated saws laying around (at least 6, in a one room apartment) that I don't see myself using it. The file does see some (rare) use but mostly it's for nails and the file on the Spirit is a bit to coarse for that.

Rain destroyed the painting I did on the light outside Castle Thunderpants so I did a new one, plus a layer of varnish. Hopefully it will last til New Year. It's just acrylic paint on glass so I know it's only temporary (that's the point.)
Anyway the glass cover had to be screwed back securely so here is my only "action" shot so far...

Went to IKEA and did some shopping and had some use of the package opener. It also helped free this badly mistreated CyberTool that I bought. As it seems to go with this kind of knives the blades are bent and badly notched but the reasonable prying tools (can opener and cap lifter) seem untouched. Go figure. It's interesting to note that while the mistreatment has gone so far as to make the scale chip all the scale tools are there (T&T + pen). Since I was mostly planning on getting a feel for the CyberTool driver these blemishes where no real problem and it may very well be that the driver ends up in a CyberYeoman.

Same here, only because I don't think I can stand carrying only the Signal and taking pictures every day. Even the Spirit is tough for me. I miss the variety of the traditional and discontinued challenges. Single tool challenges just aren't for me. That said, I'm sticking this one out, because if any tool deserves it, that's the Spirit.

This is turning out to be one of the most common uses this month. Can't get these bloody things off without some kind of prying. (It's a safety electrical plug cover, if you're unfortunate enough to not have a 2 year old getting into everything in your home.) :)

Hahah! My wife went crazy slapping similar devices all over our house ; some of them are stuck and probably will be there forever. (Ours were ugly orange things from Ikea...)
Ironically our kid showed no interest in electrical sockets whatsoever... unlike me, who (I am told) did my utmost to electrocute myself several times a day for many arduous months.

I need a simple pocket sheath like that. What can you tell me about it?
It's a Skinth P2MT (http://skinthsolutions.com/product/parallel-pocket-panel-2/). Small tube fits the Waiter perfectly, or a AAA flashlight. Big pouch is a bit large for the Spirit, but it works. It's very good quality, and the price is right IMO. Metropolicity makes them. :tu:

It was actually a fairly busy day for the Spirit. Cut open a bag of salt with the blade, a package with the package opener/chisel, cut some wrapping paper with the scissors, and fixed a toy race car with the pliers and mini screwdriver.

I'm not usually a fan of the can opener on regular SAKs (few cans need them these days around here) and it makes even less sense to me on the Spirit since I have both a dedicated Phillips and a chisel/scraper/pry-thingy. That tool is really one of my favourite tools, it seems to do everything.

The lid doesn't close properly if they're mounted on the side so idiot dad (me) had to improvise.
Bizarrely I could only find flat head screws - despite having bought countless billions of Phillips screws over the last few years.

We got a lift with the mother-in-law over to their place today. We are to help with Christmas decorations and preparations.
My picture for today is my most recent piece of gear, a Lamy st fountain pen. I got it to replace a Pilot Birdie that I lost and so far it's doing a fair job at it. It writes better but it is a bit bigger and it becomes top heavy when posted.

This month is going by so fast. I really do like the Spirit as a primary EDC. It does everything I need a multitool to do and more.
Here the Spirit is posing next to Smudge. He's a friend's cat that I'm feeding while she is visiting her family for the holiday.

After spending Christmas with the in-laws we went on to my parents for a couple of days and the haul here has been great.
The pen is a Pilot Birdie fountain pen that I found that my father had laying around (I got my first from him as well).
Then there's a bunch of second hand finds.
The knife is an EKA Swede 90 and was in a bit of a beat up shape. The blade had a deep nick and the backspring was bent. Luckily it's easy to disassemble it with the two screws so it's in much better shape now. Oh, and I gave two dollars for it.
Then there's a bunch of handkerchiefs that I got for two dollars fifty, that's eleven of them.

Since my parents have a big house I was the designated host for an evening of games. Some cardgames but also 7 Wonders and Mysterium. All told we ended up being 14 people, most of us old friends and a few significant others. It turned out to be an awesome time with pizza and lots of memories.

My parents have this chest with a hidden compartment that they had never opened! That had to change so armed with the trusty Spirit and a flashlight I disengaged the spring and opened it up.

Today's special project was replacing a 25 year old TV that finally decided to stop working.
step 1) disconnect and remove the old TV.
step 2) unpack the new TV.
step 3) install bases and connect wires to the new TV.
step 4) (not shown) make a big bag of microwave popcorn, Carnival / kettle corn style, and watch the new TV.

With a Centurion that I stropped today. I'm really starting to dig stropping. I've found it especially nice when the grind is a bit off. Not a problem on SAKs, but on some of my Case knives, it works better than the Sharpmaker.

After a whole month carrying the Spirit, I think I will continue to carry it more in 2017 in tandem with my Yeoman, Golfer or Jalox. What can I say, the Spirit to me has the most tool density in its compact size.

Long day. Little one is sick and all stuffed up. Mother-in-law is in the hospital. I tried to unwind by sharpening the kitchen knives, which sorely needed it.
By the way, are you supposed to clean a strop somehow? Or do you just put more compound on it? :think:

Happy new year guys! The Spirit helped me with releasing my favourite tie from the dry cleaners tag. It's my favourite because my girlfriend embroidered my initials on the matching handkerchief, all in silk including embroidery :like:

Day 31
Is the Spirit the best multi-tool there is? Without a doubt, and yet I feel like I failed this challenge a bit. I mean, yes I carried it with me every day, but there just wasn't a lot to actually do with it. Part of that is just my life, the reason I don't belt carry a pliers multi very often. Part of it is that it's the dead of winter and I'm just watching TV from the warmth of my couch in my spare time. So I may try this challenge again in the future, when there's more stuff to do. But regardless, it has been fun to participate with you all and see all the great photos of this shiniest of shinies.

I did a recap through the last ten days or so since I last did a count. Everyone has been posting their pictures as they were supposed to. I haven't gone through it and checked that the pictures actually came up within the correct day in the different time zones etcetera but it seems they came up in a generally ordered fashion. :like:

The number in the yellow circle is always 1-15. It is never is higher than that.
Just a thought. But Master Obi would have to give this the thumbs up, and declare which day we start doing it.

So after a marathon round of scissors paper rock backstage it was decided that I would feed the cat, clear the mail, and wrap up the challenges etc.
Unfortunately for you lot, I've just (yesterday) re broken one of the two fingers I broke earlier this year, so getting a cool prize posted out isn't going to happen sorry.
