Title: Morakniv Bushcraft Triflex passaround
Post by: Grathr on June 20, 2017, 08:27:10 PM
I just got my hands on this discontinued Morakniv Bushcraft Triflex. As Triflex Moras are now longer available I figured Ill send this one on a little world tour to let you guys get a chance to play with this now exctinct beauty.

Triflex steel is a steel where the outer layer (0,1 mm) has had much of the carbon removed. As a result they can harden the core a lot while outside remain soft. This makes the steel able to take and hold a great edge and still be able to take beating without shattering. Mora used this steel in several models over 20 years until the steel manufacturer went bankrupt a few years ago. As a result, the Triflex Moras are now duscontinued.

The rules for the passaround:

1. You have to be willing to ship internationally.

2. When you get it you play with it for a few weeks, post some pics and a few words here, and then send it on to the next one on the list.  The last one send it back to me.

3. Use it. Dont baby it, but dont wilfully try to destroy it. Sharpen it if it is needed. If you dont feel competent enough at sharpening to do it, dont. Let the next guy do it.  It has a fairly short tang, so dont baton thick knotty logs with it.
Feel free to take it on an adventure or long hike or fishing and so on. ( and we love to see pics of it)

4. Clean it and oil it after use, it is not stainless steel.

5. Feel free to mod the sheath if you feel competent at that. But dont mod the knife beyond sharpening.

6. Enjoy it! :)

Put your name on the list below if you want to experience the triflex. Ill close the list after july 1.
Then Ill arrange the list so that the knife will travel the most sensible route.

02 - Ducttapetech - USA

I do have one request Gaute, if it is possible,  I would like to be the last one to test the Mora out. Like I said, if it is possible.

I actually have one, which I never use as I usually use my cheaper Moras/Martiinis as I consider this a posh model and worry about damaging it, for some reason... weird, I know...

Already Nate I've noticed it looks and feels very similar to the 746 I've got here,I'll compare it to a few Moras I've got  :salute:

I am thinking it's go on a handle just like a bushcraft black myself. I have used one of the 746s. They look like they are nice to use.

Yeah shape is just like the BB  Nate  :tu: be interesting to compare the 746 though as a cheaper Mora compared to the Triflex and the BB, blade shape looks the same as the 746 and BB ,I'm sure it will perform well as not found a Mora that doesn't  :tu:

Sweet! How do you like it as a cross draw? I have been thinking about modding my BB to a cross draw for the warmer months.

I did fit the belt attachment it came with to be worn as a cross draw but not tried it yet,Tbh here in the uk I tend to keep my knife in my backpack or around my neck under my top ,too many issues law wise here sadly  :-\

Gotcha. In the cooler and colder months I wear mine as a neck knife because of the accessibility and my vest keeps it from flopping around. In the warmer months, I wear them on my belt because they get in the way as a necker because I don't have my vest to keep them flopping around or the sheath dangles in front or on your work.

You'd think I have better resiliance to peer pressure, but apparently I don't. Only concern is that since the #1 is small in hand when it comes to its handle, how will the Gaute be?

If the No1 is small in your hand, maybe you should look at the whittler models. They have No1 size handles and small blades.

Edit:
Also looks like the No2 has a slightly bigger handle than the No1.
Ill check when I get home.
Se scale comparison below.

This was interesting, now I usually wipe my blades when wet as most are carbon steel, all my SS Moras have some patina but nothing like my carbon Moras,so I was surprised when I took the Triflex out of its sheath and saw the rust, so looks like trifles patinas like carbon blades ,I personaly like that but I can polish that out if wanted Gaute  :tu:

A little patina is fine, as long as its not red rust. :)

And nice comparison pics. :tu:

Ok sorry about delay but sadly my Ankle is a issue as well as my wife in holiday last week so lacking time,so this am I decided to do some cutting test on a rather way peice of wood,it's also a test Styx has been trying, little Gaute has a more convex grind vs the Triflex scandi grind, both actually performed really well,I found the convex better at thick slicing and the scandi a bit better at notching and fine feathering but both performed really well,it was not just a test of different grinds but factory edge vs home done grind and edge  :tu:

Title: Re: Morakniv Bushcraft Triflex passaround

Both types of grind don't need too much effort to cut, scandi less so with fine feathering and little Gautes convex cuts that wet wood like butter  :tu: impressed with both knives, the Tiflex is very comfy in the hand and good balance and control, very good knife, weather permitting me and the girks will make a bow drill next week and just use the Triflex  :salute:

How is the edge holding up?
Title: Re: Morakniv Bushcraft Triflex passaround
Post by: styx on July 30, 2017, 06:46:31 PM
Would you consider it a good companion knife (with larger tools), back up knife (to a main knife) or a knife that can stand alone with a saw during the warmer months?
Title: Re: Morakniv Bushcraft Triflex passaround
Post by: Zed on July 30, 2017, 07:21:20 PM
Gaute the edge seems to be holding up well, before I send it on I'll strop it and give it a little polish up as still surprised about the patina  :D I guess you need to treat it more like carbon steel  :tu:

Styx I would be happy with this as my main knife but then I do like my Moras and my 2000 is kind of my main knife while camping but I've always a khukuri and a folder in my pocket and a #1 in my pack ,but if I just had to have one knife this would be fine, of course you would need a chopping tool as I wouldn't batton with it but I generally don't batton anyway  :tu: this knife notched with not too much pressure and comfy, feathers well, the convex on little Gauge does cut thick chunks pretty easy but not so great at fine feathering like the Triflex scandi but I kind of thought that would happen as my MOD knife has a convex grind and it's better at chopping and thick slicing,a bit like comparing a opinel thin slicing blade to a axes chopping ability if that makes sense  :D

The realist in me will argue that it is a more inexpensive choice between getting a hatchet, an ax and a clever.

I haven’t had a chance to do anything but look at it!  If I can’t get to it by this weekend, I’ll just ship it on out. No need for it to just set here.

I added a 510 not a 511  :tu:  watch that Triflex as rusted just looking at it ;) and its blade edge is very brittle, although I find most mora scandi to be a tad brittle  :-[

Got a few pics and some footage captured over the weekend. So far, I love the Triflex. Been using it in the woods some and around the farm. Same handle as the Bushcraft Black so it naturally feels good in the hand. The blades is not as thick, making it a decent slicer.

Nice!  So glad you got to get some use. I was never able to do much with it. Just didn’t have the time.

I also have the Bushcrafter Black, which I won in a GAW here at MTO.

I used it a lot camping earlier this year.
