Title: Broken Scissors Spring on a Style
Post by: Kev D on June 05, 2018, 08:56:07 AM
I needed to use the scissors on the leatherman style I carry on my car keys this morning and found that the spring has broken off about half way along it.  No piece fell out so no idea when it broke.

Seeing as the style went out of production a long time ago I'll have to make a new one I think.

Here's a comparison pic with it next to a good one that I carry on my work keys...

Bummer. Good for you if you can make a new one. I wonder if Loki has any spares...

I will be very interested to see what ideas you have. I have a couple with broken spring as well.... I heard these break for no apparent reasons..

It's clear enough to me...  They're either badly designed or badly manufactured.  Or both. >:D

They still make the Style PS and various Squirts which use the same scissors though.

It is odd that we dont hear more stories with broken springs on those  I wasn't thinking about the scissors being the same so wonder what design difference has caused the Style to be more susceptible?  Or maybe the PS and CS are breaking and we just aren't hearing about it

There are at least half a dozen threads and 10 or more separate instances that I've seen on here of the springs breaking on the Style, Style PS and Squirt PS4.  It's a very common failure on all the models.

Bad part is they break while folded up, not in use.

Ha ha ha, I was just praising yesterday in another thread how I love my squirt PS4 better than the Micra, I will continue carrying it but might have to re-evaluate if my spring breaks too :)

I guess I was just thinking it was the backspring on those but that is the Squirt

I used to dislike the spring you get on a vic sak (not the scissors mind you, those are the best!  :D) and thought that LM was really on to something with their integrated spring. But then I started seeing these kind of reports. Now I think the vic style of spring might be better except for the times when it slips off. But then again the spring on my LM squirt did the same a few times. Though it hasn't broken yet...  :ahhh

I carry a P4 but I have put a PS4 into service.  Its not had any issues so far.  I've used the scissors a few times and they work fine.  Fingers crossed for now.

I've had the exact same failure on two Style PSes- LM replaced it with no arguing both times, but if it happens again I'm going to ask for a Micra as replacement

The spring on my ES4 snapped the same way. It had never been used. :shrugs:

I've kinda had it with Leatherman. I've said it plenty of times, but once they got fancier than the basic PST style, they fouled up somehow.  I've had dumb failures on the fancier models that were just inexplicable. Despite all the new and improved models to come along, they haven't truly improved on the basic PST and Micra designs when it comes to reliability.

As long in the tooth as the Micra would seem to be, it's always the one I go back to for the best in the size to utility ratio. Best on the market, IMO.

How about modding it with Vic scissors?   :D

Seriously, LM warranty through Whitby & Co in the UK is good.  I've used them a few times.  If you have an out of production model they'll find something similar.  I had a old style Squirt S4 exhanged for a Micra.  Technically I think Micra is illegal carry in the UK, so I gave it ti my wife.

Same happened to me, but it's tiressome having to send a tool for repair when you haven't even used it. Right now the spring is broken. I managed to be able to use the scissors, using the pulp of my thumb pressed against the tip of the handle to open and close it. Takes some time to get used to but I managed to work with them without the spring.
