Title: Talon - customisable pocket multitool
Post by: Tacticagear on September 16, 2016, 10:12:37 PM
Hi Guys,

Just wanted to let you know of an upcoming kickstarter camapaign and looking for feedback. Its called the Talon and it a customisable pocket multitool. Its made from an advanced composite material that typically is used in the military and aerospace industries to replace die cast metals. This makes it ultra-lightweight (about half that of titanium) yet super strong. It also means we can also manufacture it locally in Melbourne, Australia affordably as the retail price is expected to be about $34US.
Overall it packs in metric + imperial wrenches and rulers, box cutter, bottle opener and is able to store 2 x 25mm ¼” hex drivers. This allows you to customise it for what you're doing that day, whether its around the house or mountainbiking.

We are planning on launching in the next few weeks and would love to get your feedback on it before we get into the final tooling  - any more ideas, suggestions, refinements we can do would be ace.

You can find out more here http://talon.tacticagear.com

It looks like you put a lot of thought into this tool.  :like:

The only thing I can think of that I would find missing in a tool like this is a pry bar. Other than that, I think this is a great-looking tool.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes its a good idea. We might do some testing on some samples to see how long it might be vs strength. The material is super strong so very possible. Cheers, Mike

What is the advanced composite?  It is a polymer or something more sinister?

I understand if it's a trade secret, but we have a lot of engineers here that might be curious.  :D

Yes we are keeping it close to our chest but in short its a type of glass filled nylon blend. Its a very unique material and from what I can see we're the only ones using it in Australia. I've got a prototype that is made from a lower grade and its still strong, stiff and light as anything. We will be using the highest grade which delivers outstanding strength and stiffness. We currently use it in our bottle opener (the Tactica One) so are well versed in the material and pushing it to have a premium finish for the consumer market.

Glass filed nylon huh?  Sounds fascinating.  At the risk of prying too much, how does it compare to something like Zytel?

Unique? Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon has been used for years now? Or is your mixture of the components unique?

I don't have exact comparison but from what i can see Zytel has a low GF fill in comparison. In addition the specific GF has been engineered in such a way to deliver the high fill and exceptional properties.
Yes GF Nylon has been used for years but much has evolved in this space. It like comparing the Iphone V1 vs V7 - lighter, faster, etc. Same goes with these materials.
You can pretty much think of it as glass with a bit of plastic in it.

I have to say that this material alone sounds worth the price of admission.  :D

Grant in short, everyone who handles it is surprised by the lightness and the strength. Very cool stuff

It looks like a well thought throug design.
Im very curious to see how this one holds up over time.

Grathr we're confident it will. We currently use the material in a bottle opener that works against a metal cap. These perform well so I see the tool going even better.

its on kickstarter now. :)
I just pledged for one.
Looking forward to try it out, if the campaign succeeds.

Thanks for the support. We are already funded so no need to worry about if it happens. We are actually in the middle of tooling. We expect production to start early-mid november. So people should see their Talons early December.
Get in now for some great early bird deals.

Has anyone who chipped in on this thing gotten theirs yet?

I see that while they've filled their Kickerstarter goal, you can finally after a year place a pre-order on IndiGoGo. Sounds like they may need a second round of crowdfunding.

This crowdfunding campaign pulled in an obscene amount of money. There shouldn't be any issues with them fulfilling promises, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time such a thing happened.

I totally forgot.
I got mine quite some time ago. They did not deliver on schedual, but was only a few weeks late. I believe the huge amount of orders was the problem. But they where open about it and kept us informed, so it was no big issue.

I didnt like it much, so it didnt get much pocket time. (Ratling bits in the chamber and bits kept falling out of the bitholder, wich annoyed me)  And was quite busy, so I forgot to do a writeup.
There where a number of issues with the 1st generation, and I believe they have fixed them in the next generation according to the emails I get from them.

How well does the composite wear? Is it stronger than Nylon 66?
