Title: September Keychain Challenge
Post by: MichaelGT83 on August 27, 2022, 01:36:31 PM
I've been considering doing the keychain challenge for a while, but always had something else to jump on instead. As it stands, I'm not in any September challenge and I'm getting back into the swing of posting on here, so it seems as good a time as any to go for it.

If anyone's after the badge and wants to join in next month, feel free.

I guess I'm on my own, then!

Day 1

Alox classic back on the keyring after a month of the Undercover Carry challenge.

I'd join you Michael but I haven't even driven anywhere in the last 2 weeks.
I do, however, keep my EDC keyring on me every day.  Might get a bit boring seeing the same bits every day, but this setup works well for this retired old grandpa.
My keyring houses an Alox MiniChamp, Gerber Shard StreamLight Nano, brass LFM and of course an extra house key.

I've only got the one keyring, so the biggest part of the challenge will just be to not post the "same" photo over and over again each day... Part of the fun though, I guess. It would be nice to have some company, regardless of what form it takes.

Day 2

Morning brew.

Well, my company, these days, is my 3yo granddaughter.  It used to be that I kept her 3 days during the week and now it's up to 5 plus most weekends too, so I don't drive much.
On Fridays, I sometimes get rewarded with a cup of coffee from Duncan.  It's already gone today though so I just dropped my pocket onto a pad holder.
I'll try to get more creative this month.

Rare view of my other keyring.
Last night the Boss Lady thought that I needed to get out of the house , so we took the grandbaby to the park.   So , here's my vehicle keyring.
Key fob for the Dodge,  Doohickey+tool,  actual key for the house and another StreamLight  Nano.  The paracord LFM serves as a grab point when it's in my pocket.

Day 4

I've been out all day today. I've had numerous opportunities to take a good photo. I've ended up taking one using the laptop instead...

I'll keep ya company.

So I have a keyring and then I have a keyring that I keep tools on.  On my actual keyring I have........  keys.  Nothing exciting.  I've gone back and forth with it over the years and since I don't drive that vehicle for anything except work there is no need to clutter it up.

My key ring however is something I've settled on to carry my tools.  On it are a Midnight Manager, Aurora A5, and pill container.  I've had other things on it but they end up not main the cut long term.

Welcome to what appears to be the easiest challenge of the year, Aloha. 😆  While I may struggle to find uses for some things on a regular challenge, I can always throw out one or the other keyrings.
You and I seem to have a similar philosophy on keyrings,  one for tools and one for vehicle keys.

Welcome on board Aloha. I should really give the Midnight Manager a go one day.

I definitely agree with PitCarver that it's probably the easiest challenge of the year!  :D I just fancied something relatively straightforward for a month...

Day 5

Been out at the cricket, and it's one of the rare days I've not got a beer in shot as well...

Enjoying the holiday today.  The girls went to the local parade this morning. I knew that I couldn't do the walking so I stayed home and relaxed until they got home to tell me all about it.    Little girl has had a busy weekend... AND she didn't want to go home when her mom came to pick her up.
Oh well, she's back tomorrow.

What to carry has always caused me to rethink my key ring carry items.  How to carry is never been really an issue.

I like the Victorinox Belt Hanger a lot.  I don't like attaching things to my belt loops.  This has been the game changer for me.  I can use the clip to attach things to go into my pocket.  I can also attach things to the ring thats attached to the belt clip.

This article explains it, Aloha.

https://pocketedc.com/category/luckyfatman/

Most are 3D printed and some are made with paracord and I know a fellow, from Great Britain, that carves them from found wood.
If you do any paracording  there are some tutorials on how to make different variations on the YouTube.

I got mine from my oldest friend, a while back.

Thank you.  I was just talking about a way I choose to live and have for many years.  I raised my kids the same way.

Kina’ole is an indigenous Hawaiian word which translates approximately to  “Doing the right thing at the right time, for the right reason the right way, for the right person– the first time”.

Here are two items that I had on my tools keychain for a long time.  My Manager in sheath was my most carried tool.  I changed out for a Midnight Manager.  My LM #4 I got when they came out and it went straight onto my keychain.  It just might go back.  I was slimming my keychain down and it didn't make the cut.  No fault of it at all.  I had to make a cut.

I've revised my keychain countless times.  I still do more or less.

All I get to go to is perhaps the mountains once in a year.

Today, all I got to do is get ready for 2 granddaughters for the night, get ready for the garage tomorrow and the other granddaughter tomorrow night.

I did get a new Stockman in, yesterday, and it's getting pocket time now.

Oh well.  Just got word from my daughter that my granddaughter has the covid. 🤬
Now I've done been through it twice and certainly didn't want it again but my morning bus route is on hold for at least another week or two,  and I'm in self quarantine until I can get checked at the end of the week.

So that means that my tool ring will be doing the job, probably for the duration.

My first was rough also.  I never had any of the normal symptoms ... it just felt like I was drugged.  Dr. called it covid induced brain fog.  I definitely don't wish that on anyone.

It's really nice to be able to see what all other folks carry on a keychain.   We did get out last night and went to my father in laws for dinner.  The Boss Lady prepared the makings for an awesome salad bar like we used to have when her mom was still with us.  On the way home she and I stopped for ice cream.

Today seems to be starting off nicely.

One question: do you use the Shard still in the keyring or do you take it off?

It'll depend on what I'm needing it to do.  Usually it'll stay on my keyring.

Couple more days now.
Today,  my sidekick and I went out to the playhouse where she made me a snack.  🤔

While we're over 100 miles from the coast, hurricane Ian has already caused the local schools to cancel on site classes and extra curecular activities for tomorrow.  Took my niece to school this morning and my sidekick and I have settled in while she plays with Peppa Pig.  Simple leg drop for today.

Hopefully it's over-caution and it doesn't drift over your way.

Day 29

The penultimate day. Not a lot going on for now.

Day 30

And we're done! Another 30 days passes "just like that". Thanks PitCarver for keeping my company over the challenge and thanks to those of you who dipped in and out. It's been interesting to see other keyrings and of course I'm now considering whether I want to add anything else to my own setup.  ::)

Thank you, Michael, for starting this challenge.  As I said to Aloha, early this month that it would be a simple challenge, and it was.  No having to find a use each day was a breather from other challenges.
As for changing carry, probably not for me.
So, as a parting shot, here's my tool ring in a homemade pocket pouch that I have it in each day, ready for use.

Had the 13 tool 1 key key chain of death. Now just 2 house, 2 club, ti whistle, 2 tags and a nitecore.
I keep myself in check buy only adding tools that look like keys!
