Title: Some custom SAK
Post by: Michel M. on January 04, 2014, 09:34:05 PM
I start with the first one for 2014, a Wenger Cigar 36 with warthog tusk scales. Fileworked blades, tools, liners and springs (inside and outside with 2 different patterns) :

Sorry for the poor quality of the pics.

And a selection of older ones.

Very nice work. Regretfully the file patterns aren't that visible due to the flash. :-\ Try taking the pictures without flash or with using a light box (google "light box" for some ideas).

What file patterns are there? It looks like vine and I can't make out the other one.

Thanks. Sorry for the fileworks details, I try to improve this. You're right there are vine fileworks and other more "modern" patterns. I realize about ten patterns (arrows...).

Thanks to all !

It's the most classical pattern for the outside of springs, blade and tools. You can adjust the length between the patterns for a different result (here it's very close). It's symetric on the two springs. For the inside it's a modern pattern.

Spatha, here's a better picture (I hope) with natural light of the Nomad :

Thanks Sidhartha.

Today I finished a Swisschamp with kudu horn scales. Main blade with vine fileworks. All 8 liners with fileworks, the inside part is simply polished.

Thanks a lot Crow. I use all kind of tools (files, abrasives, diamond points...). You can have a try on a 2 mm steel bar. It's quite the thickness of a blade.

Here's the last one, an Alox Pioneer which became a deer antler Pioneer. I did brass liners because the Alox scales didn't need liners (the center one is stainless steel). Vine fileworked blade :

Thanks. I bought it, but I think it's cotton. On black micarta we can see dark and light layers.
It's hard to work and to polish.

So sexy... When I tell people everyone needs a gentlemans' knife for dress wear, this is what I'm talking about.

I notice you don't do file work on the scissors.
Title: Re: Some custom SAK
Post by: Michel M. on February 20, 2014, 08:18:24 AM
Thanks ironraven.

I would filework quite every piece but some people find it too much (and they may be right) so  I try to find a nice looking filework combination.
I did it on the scissors, with the lever (for a better grip when using them), the back and even below the spring. In this case the parcel hook and its spring were also fileworked.

Here's the first one I disassembled for a complete filework (Climber) :
(http://i71.servimg.com/u/f71/17/45/69/42/sak_cl11.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=89&u=17456942)

And the scissors of another Classic SD (sorry for the poor quality of the pic) :

It would be better to do brass liners with nice material scales and fileworked springs, but this model is already expensive compared to most common ones.

I tried the most complete 58 mm, the Minichamp with sheep horn scales. All part fileworked with assorted patterns (4 liners, 10 springs, 8 blades and tools) :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_mi10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=239&u=17456942)

I wanted to use stabilized and dyed mammooth molar, but this is too fragile for a 5 layer 58 mm. It will be for a 2 layer.

Some others models first tries are in progress.

Another beautiful work. Your work is just amazing. How long have you been doing this?
Title: Re: Some custom SAK
Post by: Michel M. on March 21, 2014, 06:49:51 PM
Thanks Crow. It's longer than an usual Victorinox folder. The shape of the under is more complex than 111 mm and the stainless steel liners are embossed. So we have to sand the embossed part near the lock back system or to mill the scales. Original scales are like Wenger ones, they fit over the liners which are a bit smaller.

I think I will dissassemble one to see if making brass liners is possible. The pins seem to be 4 mm or more.
Title: Re: Some custom SAK

Another try with a recent model, the Hunter XT. Deer antler scales and all parts fileworked :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_hu14.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=243&u=17456942)

Oh yes... I like the filework.  I tried once on a blade, it took me too long and didnt look good enough so I gave up. :D  How long does it take you to do the filework on such a beauty as that?
Title: Re: Some custom SAK
Post by: Michel M. on March 30, 2014, 08:10:12 PM
It's hard to say exactly. Blades are not a problem but the liners take more time (like thin tools and springs). When done you have to polish all fileworks and whether the pattern to remove polishing paste in the grooves.
The longest to do were the Wenger Cigar 36 and Minichamp with all parts fileworked (about 5 to 6 hours).

Hi all,

Here's my latest SAK, another custom deer antler Hunter Pro with fileworked liners and blade :

(http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/17/45/69/42/sak_hu10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=265&u=17456942)

Brass liners are 1 mm instead of 0.8 mm. It allows a nicer filework :

You made a hunter pro look good!  I actually started to sand and polish the blade on the one I took apart and its very pitted and needed alot of elbow grease to make it look like a standard SAK blade.

Good work!

Thanks to all ! Syph, your Hunter Pro will be nice with the usual polishing for the blade. The coating is fragile.

A grey anodized titan Climber with a little filework. Damasteel blade (no outer liners on this one) :

And a cattle horn Spartan also with a damasteel blade and 1 mm fileworked brass liners :

It's been a while i haven't posted on this topic. Here's a custom Victorinox Delémont Ranger 55 with brass bolsters and AZ desert ironwood :
(https://i37.servimg.com/u/f37/17/45/69/42/sak_ra11.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/17456942/375)

(https://i37.servimg.com/u/f37/17/45/69/42/sak_ra10.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/17456942/374)

Fileworked blade and springs. No unlocking button, it wouldn't be so nice with precious woods.

Absolutely stunning! Did you remove the lock entirely so is now just a slip joint (therefore UK knife law-friendly...)?

No, its a classic liner lock but the lock could be removed in this case. It would be also possible on side lock 111 mm which are difficult to mod with their button and spring.

Amazing work Michel  :tu:  :o - I had missed this thread until now!

Sorry guys - Can I ask the really dumb questions?

Is file work done all by hand with tiny little files? And following various historical or documented patterns?
If so the hours of work must be staggering - How long? say, to do the back of a blade?
And does the knife have to be disassembled to do springs and liners?

But I have to make a terrible admission - Despite appreciating the amazing craftsmanship  - I don't think I like it !!   :(  Sorry :o
Not quite sure why - Maye it looks a little messy  ???  Especially when you mix up the patterns - Maybe I am just used to the clean flat lines of a standard SAK

However I gotta say I do like the Ranger and Sentinel - just above - The bolster is fab and I guess I like the simpler patterns.

Thanks Huntsman. I know that not everybody likes filework. I did some without or just the blade.

Yes it's done by hand with files and/or other tools like abrasives, the result needs to be polished. SAK part have a good finish but on other knives the work after fileworking is longer to get a nice finish.
The first step is to mar the blade or spring to get a regular pattern. It may be long for a complete work, with symmetry between the springs or tools. For liners and spring the knife has to be disassembled but its better to work on spare blades rather than the whole knife.

There are traditional patterns but creation is possible.

Hi Michel

Once again, stunning work.  :salute: :salute: :salute: :tu: :tu: :tu:

Just 2 questions.......

The paper stone you refer to, is that paper micarta?

I assume you don't anneal and re-heat treat the blades & springs for the file work, how long do your files last?

Paperstone is a material with recycled paper and natural resins (starch and cashew nut). It's different from micarta but with great performances. You can Google it for more informations.

Indeed I keep the heat treatment for blades, tools and springs. Classic files, even with the best quality, are not the best choice. Diamond files but also abrasive and diamond bits are better. Materials to work vary from alox liners to stainless steel. This way each tool has a normal lifetime.
