Title: D_T's 30d (MTO) Pioneer X Challenge Thread
Post by: Dutch_Tooler on February 14, 2018, 07:56:42 AM
Welcome to the official challenge thread, opened in advance so that interested forum members (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,75368.msg1637274.html#msg1637274) may know where to post, and those lucky people where the day starts early, time zone wise, will have a place to post their Day 1 picture tomorrow :D.

I'll start off with:

Day 0

I proudly present the crew that will accompany me through the next 30 days. Mainly the glorious MTO Pioneer X, naturally. Secondary, but still urgent, tasks in the filing, pinching, manipulating and writing areas, as well as small-scale stuff may, if they occur, be delegated to the tools in my EDC pouch.

Just a reminder of the rules (yeah, there are rules, if not many :D):

The challenge will be considered met by anyone posting, in a reply in this thread, a picture, taken during the day itself, of the Pioneer X, engaged in more or less arduous tasks, or in settings of a particular photographic interest, during every single one of the next 30 (thirty) consecutive days. This period runs from Thursday 15th February (Day 1) to Friday 16th March (Day 30) of the year 2018. (Smurf, February is a short month, isn't it?)

Whenever the PX is - by virtue of its reduced tool loadout - not up to the task, other, specifically named tools may come to the rescue, with explanatory pictures and prose explaining the how, and why the PX could not do them, unless this is obvious.

Good luck everyone! :tu:

Is this for MTO Pioneers Xs only or are all Xs welcome?

All of them are welcome, but the MTO ones are preferred. (Note that the (MTO) was in brackets. :D)

today is my last day of really loaded belt, going from 2 multis and 2/3 SAKs to just a PX and (as a backup, and only for times where pliers are needed) a Rebar.

The light shall remain the same.

It's gonna be a fun experiment   :salute:

Since the MTO PXs haven't reached our Philippine shores yet (boat in the middle of the Pacific methinks), I plan to use my ordinary PX for this.

Question: can I still carry my Spyderco Tenacious with my PX under this challenge? The Tenacious is exclusively and purely for self defense carry only.

I´m not doing this after all, I´m having too much fun in the 111mm challenge and will complete that one first. The PX badge will have to be earned another time.

Off topic: Dutch Tooler´s initials always remind me of Dejah Thoris / Deety, one of the principal characters both in Burroughs´ Barsoom series and in Heinlein´s Number of the Beast. I hope I´ll never meet Dutch Tooler in real life, likely it would be a big disappointment  :D

It would... Deety's pic sets the bar pretty high...

Day 1

Just to warm up, some light exercise.

We all know about the proverbial quality of the Victorinox scissors as used in the 91mm models and SwissTools. The scissors introduced to the 93mm Alox world with the Pioneer X are no exception, being generally from the same mould. In the pic below, the scissors are shown after having made short work of a sugar stick, the contents of which were then added to the beautiful and yummy cappuccino just visible in the background. As I said, light exercise - these scissors have the general quality and strength feeling normally associated with heavy metal or leather shears or the like, and feel up to exactly that kind of task.

I have read some criticism leveled at the (for 91mm/ST users) different location of the nail nick, sometimes and variously reported as odd, unusual and annoying. While I can relate to that (especially when I just got the PX) it does follow what appears to be the general Alox logic of having all the nail nicks to one side (the exception being the awl which has no nail nick). Be that as it may, for those willing to modify the otherwise aesthetically perfect Alox models, there is always the option of replacing the scissors with a (salvaged) 91mm pair. One only needs to enlarge the pivot hole from 2.5 to 3 mm (a tungsten carbide tipped drill bit is useful, bearing in mind that those available on the net may need to be trimmed down to exactly 3 mm).

More arduous work will follow in the next days (not only for the scissors).

So, early doors on Day 1 and as I don't take sugar with my coffee I can't show off any Alox scissor action. But this is todays tool selection.

Day 1

commencing the challenge with the best Alox of all out there, the scissors do the trick for me over the Farmer or any other.
All but one of te tools I frequently use are there, the exception being pliers, which I need on occasion.

so this will be the one and only multitool to cover my back during the PX Challenge, in case I need pliers or some weird bits   :salute:

there will be a folding knife in my pocket as every day that I wore my pants for the last 5 years or so,
bt will remain unused and only there for emergencies, as it's always been  :salute:

Yes, you do, Barry, you do... follow the watch with your eyes as I let it pendulate... follow... follow... and when I say "boom" you pull the trigger on the PX on your favourite online shopping site... follow the watch... follow... BOOM!

I'll wait for magentus official word then. In the meantime, my Day 1 entries. My PX in its sheath together with my pocket FL (Fenix LD02). Also, here it is with a skinned apple, which I eat 1-2 times a day (reason I bought a Pioneer Solo).

A new page already - going well folks :tu:

Thanks for the great uses, stories and pics for Day 1

Onwards we go to...

Day 2

A little bit more strenuous exercise today.

The space between the corner piece and the straight in the frame on the whiteboard in my office has been bothering me for a while. I had salvaged it from the recent flurry of office moves and used Megalox to put it on my office wall, which went well but I was sloppy and .. well... that space bothered me. I think this must be a sign of the onset of OCD.

Not having the Megalox at hand, I managed to use the can opener on the PX to undo the Phillips, then after moving the corner piece of the frame down, drilled a pilot hole in the drywall through the other of the frame's holes using the 1st class awl, followed by reinserting and tightening the Phillips again. Repeat at top left corner. Done.

Word of caution though - the can opener tends to fold back when you apply too much pressure (ask me how I know). You can counter that by applying a little bit of side force in the correct direction while turning.

that Phillips is good enough but I agree that only for light duty tasks
on a similar fashion,

Day 2,
the blade was short for the job, but the sharpness of the fresh edge compensated that   :salute:

Your last remark resonates, somehow... I hope I won't be suffering bad dreams about being followed by a giant cauliflower...

I need to ever so slightly revise one statement in my post above. Of course the screw is a powerful high-tech Pozidriv, not a mere old-fashioned Phillips.
Doesn't matter though, not enough torque was needed to make a difference on how good (or bad) the can opener was at turning it  8)
Be that as it may, the can opener is definitely not made for high-torque use, that's for sure. (Dare I say I missed the inline Phillips on Megalox?).

I've been out cycling today so the PX stayed at home. I guess I could get into trouble for having a non PX multitool in my saddle bag (I think it's a Crank Brothers job) but honesty is the best policy.

But PX is now in my pocket for the rest of the day

Since the MTO PXs haven't reached our Philippine shores yet (boat in the middle of the Pacific methinks), I plan to use my ordinary PX for this.

Question: can I still carry my Spyderco Tenacious with my PX under this challenge? The Tenacious is exclusively and purely for self defense carry only.

I think so, but for a definite answer I believe I have to defer to our master of challenge rules, magentus...  :pok:
I'll wait for magentus official word then. In the meantime, my Day 1 entries. My PX in its sheath together with my pocket FL (Fenix LD02). Also, here it is with a skinned apple, which I eat 1-2 times a day (reason I bought a Pioneer Solo).

You're still good.
Typically rules of exclusion only apply to the official or first run through of a challenge.
Subsequent runs are more relaxed.

And as someone who has been through multiple sizable shakes in the last few years I can highly recommend you be prepared.
It's totally worth being ready.

Pro tip
,
if you want to use your eggs to make boiled eggs instead, and want to avoid possible cracks, accidental breakage of the shell or spilling the egg's contents into the boiling water...
you can use the PX's awl to make a tiny (read: tiny) hole on top of each egg prior to putting them into the hot water  :tu:

Cutting the Nylon damaged the edge a bit, very tiny rolling in there (there were metal bands inside the Nylon from day 4 )

so I touched the edge, now it's equally sharp all along its length

Took some red tea for further relaxing during the sharpening session, and sharpened SAKs and other blades with some classical music playing  :gimme:

Cheapest knife at hand? That looks like a CRKT M21. I´ve got one myself.

PS I don´t like the M21 because it has the AutoLAWKS feature. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, LAWKS is a second lock to secure the liner lock. It makes me wonder if I can trust liner locks in general (if it ain´t broken, don´t fix it). I have a couple M16s too, these have a manual LAWKS system and I like them only marginally better.

just went outside in a rush grabbing the cheapest knife at hand, thinking I might need to trash it, but in the end were other tools (the Rebar in fact that was in my belt a always) solved the problem   :D  Pliers were needed so as I stated at the beginning of the challenge, a MT will remain on my EDC together with the PX

I have a couple M16s too, these have a manual LAWKS system and I like them only marginally better.

no, Ron, it ain't no CRKT! The M16/M21 are legendary budget folders, this one doesn't get close to them
It's a $7 Chinese assisted flipper, TONIFE brand   :salute:

it's like the poor man's M16
Grabbed it because for $7 and a broken or snapped blade II wouldn't cry  :D

Day 13,

the awl does make a good package opener, if you want to keep your blade really sharp. PX helped me with a new parcel,

a gift from our dear friend jcs0001 in Canada
a MINI!  :ahhh  which is the coolest LM tool that I could  never check out and I was really curious about

and not only was this tool a RAK, he also added a custom fit leather slip/pouch for it!  :o  :gimme:

now I know what full size tool will be with me on dressy clothes, when sheaths and belt pouches are inappropritate
It's a tight and perfect fit for the coin pocket!  :)

this and the ZT will allow me to carry truly capable tools in a discreet way,  :tu: and the two have been gifts from our awesome members here   :hatsoff:

Ah, snow there too, I see...

Day 14

As for here, it is smurfing cold. -12°C this morning and the wind has picked up again, feels like -20 (to me).
The PX, warm as it was, refused to sink into the snow which remained solid...

That, my friend, is a very valid reason. It is not as if you were abandoning the PX in favour of something else :D

I assume everyone has noticed we're on Day 15 already, which puts us at the half-way mark of this challenge! Thank you all for the awesome pics and uses so far :tu:

The use shown below is practical, if a tad prosaic. The mighty scissors are about to bite into the hardy metal-plastic composite material of a pill blister in order to create easily pocketable portions of today's preventative doseage against a potential throat ache.

Starting off the second half of the challenge with another use of the scissors, now for a healthy snack. I have remarked before that these bags often come with poorly aligned tear strips, and this one is no exception. PX to the rescue! :D

Day 19
Meanwhile, today I needed a small hook to retrieve a keyring from under the foot of a desk against the wall (of course it had to roll in that direction and stop under the foot. Little space...). I didn't actually need the Mini Tool, I could make do with the PX.

Day 21

It was bound to happen at some stage... a task the PX wasn't up to.  :ahhh

On the pic below you can see major damage to my high-tech Japanese badge holder. Sorry, I am not at liberty to show you the other side :D

The damage consists in the triangular clip thing having bent open, and also a little bit in torsion, to a sufficient extent to just release one hole of the cylindrical wire attachment. The clip wouldn't let itself be pushed back.

I have valiantly tried to insert various PX tools to pry the clip open further, but did not have enough purchase to hold its other end, and I didn't want to use the blade for fear of dulling or denting it. Mini Tool had to come help, and also to bend the clip back into shape and close it.

I think the Cobalt Constructor would have coped better, with its pliers... Sadly it is on my workbench, waiting to be placed in the limelight again. I think it's feeling lonely

Day 25. It's still chilly enough for me to wear my RAF Irvin style jacket to keep in spirit with my reading about Amy Johnson our early female aviatrix this side of the pond. I'd be interested in reading about Amelia Earhart next so if anyone has any book recommendations they'd be appreciated. And on that subject I came across this recent nugget about the mystery of her disappearance.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/03/180307115506.htm

I believe there was a mystery about the disappearance of Amy Johnson too.

Jaffa Cake purists will weep at this. But I think they're a fine addition to the canon of such delicacies. And M&S too.

Day 28
Just as many before me the awl is awl that's needed for opening postal packages, BUT it leaves something lacking when opening bubble packs.
The Spirit chisel is far superior.

Get well soon, sacacorchos!!  :salute:

day 29,

PX and coffee first in the morning  :gimme:

then had to dismantle a TV, where the shallow screws were managed by the PX's can opener while the bigger, deeper ones had to be addressed with the Phillips on the Spirit, as the PX just didn't do well with them  :P

and wired a new Audio Stereo system to the TV, awl used to open the box

where the TV was before I found my old Zippo that I had lost a few months ago, it fell from my pocket when wiring the TV one day   :ahhh

then had a coffee outside after transporting the TV to its new home

and finally took a shot of the PX with the (soon to be gone) Wingman, and did a proper farewell for it before it goes to its new owner  :salute:

Day 29

On the penultimate day of this great challenge, time for a beauty shot again with just a touch of unsharpness due to lens smudging artistic application of soft-focus.

One will notice immediately the utter lack of marks, dents and other blemishes, even after and in spite of the tortures the PX has undergone during this harsh and protracted challenge. No doubt this is down to the superb build quality of the PX, as all things Victorinox. Either that, or I didn't use it all that much - it is fair to say that the needs for strenuous use of pocket tools have remained rather limited during this past month. One small mark you won't see in the picture appears near the flat end of the cap lifter, where I must have slipped on a screw - so now the PX is not brand-new anymore. However, all through the challenge, whenever not engaged in activity the PX has remained a faithful inhabitant of my front right jeans pocket, at hand for when the need arose.

DAY 30 !!!

That's it folks, this is officially the last day of the awlsome 30 days challenge.
Thanks to all of you for the interesting pictures and brilliant accounts of some of the uses. To those that do not own a PX but dropped in occasionally, thanks for your warm support. It's been a hell of a ride :tu::tu::cheers:

I'm of two minds about reaching this milestone... as I gather others are as well. On the one hand, one has to constantly think of not forgetting to post pictures. Now, this wouldn't be so difficult if I had a use for the PX every day... which in an office environment is not necessarily the case. However, during the challenge, on occasion I had to force myself to find a halfway interesting motive for a picture. I hope I haven't bored y'awl to death with them.

Having said that, the PX is unobtrusive enough not to bee too oppressively present, and hence a tool which I find very pleasant to carry around, with (for its size) a lot of utility. More about that below.

But first, a few pics of the PX's routine this morning:

Comparing sizes (I think this PX is reaching puberty). The other one is a Victorinox too, at least 20 years old and massively overengineered for what is touted as its main task, namely ... slicing bread. I have, not once, needed to sharpen this beast. It will still as easily slice bread as any inappropriately placed fingers.

Some concluding thoughts on the Pioneer X:

Extremely nice look and feel. This is the knife that let me fall in instant love with the Alox 93 mm range, and not just because it's the MTO.org edition.

The looks are brilliant. Not just on the outside (the metallic sheen of the anodised scales is simply gorgeous, especially in this deep red) but also inside, where the liners and polished tools have been arranged in a pattern that pleases my engineer's eye. Assessment:
The handling too. The nubs on the alox scales and the latter's slight roughness make them perfectly grippable even with wet hands, much more so than cellidor scales. Also, the lack of tools on the back enables the user to put a lot of finger pressure there to guide the knife blade against stronger opposing forces.

The quality and finish of the tools is beyond reproach, with only minor exceptions.

Knife blade: keeps a very keen edge (even on repeated package opening) and is easy to touch up once that - rarely, I guess from my experience - becomes necessary.

Scissors: among the best on the market, and in fact historically the raison d'être of the PX. Same comments on edge as for the blade. The location of the nail nick is odd at first and requires adaptation of the usual opening technique.

Awl: I must say I like the inline position of the awl a lot (I prefer it over the central position such as on the SwissChamp), and also its shape, combining to great effect both a keen edge, sharp point and reamer with a contour that melds well with the scale contour when folded.

Can opener: I had no occasion to use it for opening a can, but I did use the small screwdriver end to tackle a few stalwart Pozidriv screws. Works reasonably well if you don't expect to apply much torque. Beware of the tool folding up on you - apply pressure in the opening direction to avoid. Slightly larger than its brother on 91 mm tools - which can be an advantage but also a disadvantage...

Bottle opener: I had multiple occasions to use it for opening plural bottles  :drink:. Perfect for that job, even for an operator that has had a few. The large screwdriver end works very well for opening paint can type lids. However, for screws, I get the feeling that the end is not profiled perfectly to fall exactly in the slot - there is a slight taper and rounding to the edges, so that when turning a screw, you need to keep the driver in by applying axial pressure - this is a bit counterintuitive and hence awkward when unscrewing. Like the half stop, though, as well as the wire stripper indent. The latter was not used for its intended purpose yet, but it works well at applying tight bending radii to paperclip ends. The same caveats apply as with the can opener.

Overall tool load: OK, I'll admit it. Did I tell you I was an engineer? No? Well, as such I prefer a slightly more elaborate tool loadout than on a PX. I agree that the PX is a vast improvement over the original Pioneer - the extra scissors just about double its versatility in daily use, I think. However, having been spoiled by other offers both from Victorinox (the iconic SwissChamp) and others (the bigger LMs), I feel that the PX tool loadout still makes me feel vaguely naked. I'm not sure why Victorinox has never built bigger Alox models than that - I am positive there is a market for them. Which is, of course, why I built my own, but that is a different story (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,75772.msg1630497.html#msg1630497). Of course, the PX loadout makes it perfectly pocketable, and hence potentially more suitable for frequent carry, which is a major plus point.

Day 30 I believe. The PX screwdriver helped me remove the pump mount from its packaging. And here we are with shiny new pump on my fixed gear Jaffa Bike.

A few reflections. I'm not naturally drawn to Alox but the scissors swing it with Pioneer X. I like to have T&T to hand so there's always got to be a companion. But I was surprised how readily what could seem like a bulky SAK slipped neatly into my pocket day after day. This perception has kept me away from the carrying my Farmer  if that's not a saw point for folks here.

But I work most days in an office. Do I need 93 mm? Not really. I did surprise a colleague lifting a tea bag out of my mug with the PX blade one day but she was ok with that novelty and she knows me quite well. And the Pioneer X has been a useful tool in the round. EDIT: The nail nick nevertheless winds me up a treat !

Weighing it up I will include Alox, and especially Pioneer X, in my rotation more often. It has been fun and the scissors have made the PX a credible EDC for my needs. But I'm ready to carry some Cellidor for a while and I'm happy with that prospect. Each to his own. :salute:

Day 30, and posting with the PX most used tools opened: knife, scissors and awl.

This PX really made me lust for an alox SAK. Within this challenge, I have bought and now waiting for a 74 Soldier and an OC Electrician. I also hopefully will win a Harvester by tomorrow.

The blade of my PX has been my go-to knife for food prep and utility and has served me well. Its so easy to clean with just water, tissue and air dry. The scissors performed admirably but I still hate how hard it is to open, that I fear cutting my fingers everytime I do.

The awl surprised me as to how useful it can be!

Do I need anything else? PX + saw and pliers is now my dream custom SAK!

I feel great finishing my first 30-day challenge and doing it with MTO colleagues made it much easier! I will miss this daily habit.

Will the PX become my daily SAK now? It will become part of my daily rotation as my alox collection grows.

Congrats to all of us who joined and finished!

Totally fun challenge, D_T, and I'll take your template to give some thoughts of mine about the PX, and put some pics I took these days but didn't post   :salute: (long post below)

Extremely nice look and feel. I agree, there's something about the red Alox that the red cellidor lacks, both in feel (those grooved scales give a confident grip) and appeal (can't beat a worn alox,  ::) much different from a worn and scratched cellidor  :P)

also loved the strength and durability they provide, making it easy to pocket carry along tools, keys and banging around other stuff on pouches, sheaths and even among other metallic and tough objects  :gimme:

Knife blade: I like the curve (that belly and shape lends itself to slicing) and the etching seems really durable. The sharp aggressive edge kills any organic food or material and slides through it, from oranges to weeds, herbs and thin branches

and won't corrode if you leave it stained or wet for a while unlike many other pocket knives   :D

Scissors: once adapted to the nick (I had trouble at first, I admit ) they're the kind of scissors for precise, surgical cutting, clean shearing and digging with their sharp, pointy tips

Awl: thinner, better positioned and sharper than most competitor's awls, what aids in penetrating and piercing every kind of material, be it leather, wood, or plastic.

A very nice secondary "edge" when you don't want to mess your main blade, and perfect or knots

Can opener: minor screwing and can opening are the two best feats of this, but we cannot overlook its use as a scraper or "tearing device" to grab and rip plastic shells, film packaging or stubborn tape, grabbing it and pulling it with assurance

Bottle opener: I also suffered from slippage and not proper screw engagement with this, but as a prying tool (with the solid Alox scales giving confidence behind the torque) it excels, and for big screws like those in windows and big doors it's excellent and more than enough. I don't drink alcohol or Coke, but it opened two or three bottles this month with ease, as we're used to with Vic's openers   ;)

Overall tool load:  I'm satisfied with it, and wouldn't really add the much loves In-Line Phillips because of its thickness, this one is excellent as slim as it is, and other tools that I might use occasionally (Saw, being the most obvious one) can be found on other Alox like the Farmer.

I wouldn't give this awl for any other tool in the PX, it's marvelous, and since I rarely use the hook (and carry a  multitool for that) and backside awl, chisel or screwdriver I'm totally satisfied with this.

Add to that a smartly placed lanyard hole ring, nub, protrusion) and it's ready to go into your EDC system and handle most things you can encounter.
The Alox farmer (my first Alox) was a revelation, the PX was a love at first sight. Thumbs up to this tool!!  :ahhh

:ahhh

I honor of your challenge (and because I find it to be such a great knife); I'm carrying my MTo today.  :tu:

Congrat's everyone on a great tool and a great challenge.
As mentioned by others before me I find the bottle opener screwdriver to be problematic.  Vic got it right with the less pollished opener on the old Soldier with the wire/ cable stripper blade and truely flat edged driver.
The only other way the Px could be improved upon would be to add an inline phillips, woodsaw and T&T, but then it wouldn't be a Px, so It's great as is.
Day 30
Just in time, I fly out to Houston tonight and don't want to take any chances with this little beauty.
A little light opening duty today.

Day 30 finally! It's been fun doing a group challenge like this. My others were all individual challenges so this was a lot of fun.

Who's ready for St. Patrick's Day?

Maybe it's the sickness but I can't decide on a SAK to carry today.  I'm thinking... I should probably carry a different SAK, but it feels wrong, or I expected to be more excited about carrying a different SAK...

So I reached for the Compact...  no, not the Compact....  So then I reached for the Climber, no not the Climber...  PX again???

Then I remembered all the designated SAK/days around this wonderful place, so I broke out El Spartan.
