(Tinker Safe? Tinker Saw? )
http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Hiker
It started life as a Hiker. Is it still a Hiker, being two layers thick with no blades or awl?
-
Bladeless Hiker. :tu:
-
Bladeless Hiker. :tu:
I don't know... The toolset resembles the Tinker more.
A bladeless Hiker is really just a Tinker with a saw instead of blades, and they have the same number of layers...
I wonder what the protocol for this sort of thing is.
-
It's a modded model, so it's really up to you to name it.
-
Well, I guess that I need to figure out what makes a model.
What makes a Hiker a Hiker? What makes a Tinker a Tinker? :ahhh
There is a Tinker family(Super Tinker, Deluxe Tinker, etc).
Whatever makes the Super Tinker part of the Tinker family, I would say makes the Hiker part of the Tinker family?
Arrgh, the philosophical side of SAKs. :bnghd:

Tinker Tuesday!
That's a Tinker, right?
-
The Super Tinker was my favorite prior to the Explorer. My most used tools for opening mail and packages were the blades and scissors. I even used the Philips to assemble some small Mission tables. The Explorer is within easy reach in case I need the magnifier but the Super Tinker will be in my pocket today.

Thanks! The Hoffritz was a real find...like on the side of the road. Why was I on the side of the road? Because I was riding my bicycle. Why was I riding my bicycle? Because I was too young to drive. Now I'm 50...and I still have the knife.

A week or so ago, I let mine out of the drawer after a long captivity. :)
I carried a Tinker for months before I went with a Super Tinker. The scissor is definitely worth another layer. If it wasn't for the Explorer, I would probably still be carrying the Super Tinker as my EDC. I still like to get the former favorites out now and then.

The Tinker was my first SAK acquisition in 2016 and has a special place in my affections!
When I first joined this board, I recalled having two "knock-off" SAKs in the latter part of the 70s. Since that time, I am remembering a genuine SAK in the latter 60s to early 70s. I can't remember the tool set but remember it being thicker than I wanted to carry in my pocket. The MacGyver series gained more attention for Swiss Army Knives among the viewing audience. I remember thinking that it would really be nice if the larger SAKs were as easy to use as the Classic SD that I received as a gift. I remember that my "knock-off" SAKs were finger nail busters and I finally decided that deploying the knife and tools just wasn't worth it. It wasn't until the fall of 2016 in the midst of a multi-tool buying surge that I decided to give the Tinker a try. That purchase opened the flood gates for me as I went on a full out Victorinox buying spree.
Seeing this thread brought a smile to my face and the need to acknowledge that I owe much to the venerable Tinker for opening the door to so much utility and enjoyment!

Very important memory!
I don't think my father even owned a pocket knife. My grandfather who lived with us was never without one. My younger brother and eye watched him with admiration as he used his knife for daily tasks. Those nostalgic recollections led me to acquire some gentleman's folding knives and eventually to Swiss Army Knives.

There's just something about the Tinker and the Spartan. I keep trying more layers but always come back to these two. For the money a two layer SAK cannot be beat and the variety of scales available it's easy to go on a buying spree.

Nice photo! I like the way you display all of the tools. The Tinker was my first Victorinox purchase and I have strong sentimental attachment to this great SAK. I have three of them including two red cellidor models that have seen frequent use and a black model that hasn't been out of the box. For awhile, I was using the Explorer (my favorite SAK model) for everything but figured out a way of supplementing the Explorer with other models, mainly the Tinker. I have located several SAKs in strategic places throughout the house where it is likely that I will need one of the tools on a frequent basis such as opening mail and packages. My wife has shifted her use to the Tinker I keep in the kitchen so that she can keep her Explorer free of glue residue from opening packages. :)
Happy Tinker Tuesday!

:bnghd:
Just casual interest but..., if a tinker and a Spartan differ only by way of Philips vs corkscrew, and a super tinker is a tinker with added scissors (and the "new" hook), then how come a Spartan with those same additions is called a climber instead of a super Spartan?

Good questions. And why is the old small Super Tinker (84mm) now commonly known as the Salesman and why isn't the 84mm Tourist known as the small Spartan?
Actually, Neil, Jazzbass, and others have discussed this over the years. From what they've shared, many names were started by regional distributors in the late 60's and early 70's. Up until this time, most SAKs were known by their Vx part number. Because of regional differences and Vx re-using names on newer tool configurations since the 70's, there isn't always a rhyme or good reason for the names we know SAKs by. The different Tinkers and Golfers would be good examples of this.
The answer to my initial question regarding the small Super Tinker can be found by perusing the old SMICO, Inc (Canadian SAK distributor) catalogs.
As for me, I refer to my modded 91mm Compact as a Compact/Tinker...but I don't think that name will last beyond me. And I don't refer to the Wenger Evo 16 as a Salesman, though in my mind I think of it as a small Super Tinker.

It was my first SAK, given to me by my dad in 1989. :salute:
My very first exposure to SAK-like knife was a knock-off in the late 70's early 80's.
I purchased my own in '88 or '88, and it was the Super Tinker. When I did damage it badly about 5 years ago, a very thoughtful friend got me the Tinker Deluxe.
I damaged that one a little, and recently dug the old one out of the drawer. The layer channels had been dented so badly, that a lot of the tools could not be opened, even with a plyers. This week I worked those channels open with screwdrivers and shaped them with plyers, oiled the hell out of it, worked the tool back and forth, wiped off excess oil and have been carrying it completely without scales. Less to worry about. Pure function

An 80's Super and a Deluxe from about 5 years ago, both of which have seen better days...
The recently refurbished late 80's Super Tinker and newer Deluxe Tinker. Took a lot of work with screwdrivers and plyers, and a lot of 3 in 1 oils and elbow grease working the blades. Not perfect by any stretch, but with the replacement scales on, they scrubbed up alright. Special thanks to Sazabi for selling and sending me the 91mm scales. Excellent person to do business with.

You might be right. :) Not being a serious collector, I'd need one of our really knowledgeable SAK collectors to weigh in and keep us honest. Since Vx is pretty loose in regards to dating their changes and their use of old inventory, it's difficult for the typical SAK enthusiast  to nail down the dates for some of these.

Thunda nailed it! As for the no-hook SuperTinker like Barry's, my blue one is also no-hook...so nobody is rubbing it in, just noting that some of us like to carry SAKs that have scissors and have a clean backside. :D

Compact SuperTinker?
Absolutely! Sometimes the typical Compact doesn't cut it in the working world...so if you need a phillips, swap out the CS. And while you're at it, swap the hook for an awl. Now you have a Compact/Tinker...two layers and able to navigate the working world a little better (at least for me).

Pardon if I missed it elsewhere, but does anyone know offhand, or can anyone direct me to an article that explains when it was that Victorinox stopped cutting the can key slot into the Phillips head? I have a late 80's Super Tinker that does have that feature, and a BSA Tinker of roughly the same vintage that does not have the can key slot.
Have seen many an article about squared Phillips, inline Philips, and dating many other aspects of these tool, but not the can key. I am guessing thye stopped sometime in the 90's based on the BSA Tinker' s half-stop SD/bottle opener, the stamps on the tang and such, but those two features are the same on these two Tinkers. Only the can key sets them apart.
I am curious to know and more closely date both.
Thanks in advance for your help

pretty sure the can key stopped in '91. the squared off phillips stopped in the very early '80s

I've been carrying the Executive today but used the Tinker to open a couple of packages as I didn't want packing tape glue residue on the Executive.

D'OH! I need glasses. Move along
Being a native Dane I own far too much Lego for my own damn good. Most of it is stored in a barn, as Mrs T14 vetoes any notion of me bringing it all into the house.
I have a few hundred castle minifigs hidden away in the house to tie me over until we can afford a house big enough to house both my collection AND Mrs T14.
-
Your Lego is stored IN A BARN??? Can I come round to play please? :ahhh
Could you solve your dilemma by building a Mrs T14 from Lego? Best of both worlds.
Just kidding of course......... :D

Don't believe that was ever produced by Vic  Must have gotten the nylon scales later on... far as I know the can key stopped in '91 and the nylon began in '94

It's got the 4-line tang stamp with big "V," and the "Officier Suisse" with the crossbow on the other side, so it's obviously an earlier knife. I agree, I think the nylon scales were added later. My first SAK was a Tinker with can key Phillips that I got back in the 80s, but I distinctly remember it had Celidor scales. Sadly I've long since lost it over the course of many moves.

It's more of a question of why didn't they call the Climber a Super Spartan.... ya know? I understand the scissors make the Tinker "super" but can only speculate how scissors are related to climbing.

Super Spartan doesn't quite roll off the tongue..
Pioneer X should be a Super Pioneer though with Vic logic it should be a Super Cadet. Climber X? where the x stands for the shape of the philips tip. If you are hiring Victorinox, I can brainstorm all day, we need new models. I have been dreaming of a spirit with alox handles, I'll give you that idea as a freebie.

The Tinker is destined to sacrifice its scales to go on another knife that will see more use, probably a Ranger.
Just like the Tinker with the green scales below sacrificed its Adaptive Sports scales for a Yeoman,

Everyday is a Tinker day for me. It's my EDC for about 30 years. Poor thing is so scarred up and scratched up, I should probably retire it and get a new one. Been saying that for several years :) Actually I have two, the other is the Man on the Moon Apollo 11 50th anniv. model from SKS. It won't get carried.
Rich
Edit: I'm still looking for a red alox Tinker. Then I'll have my ideal EDC and I can put this poor old Tinker into retirement.
I was thinking (day dreaming); why couldn't someone start with a red Alox Pioneer; replace the Pioneer punch with a small blade and add third layer with a Tinker awl on one end and a Phillips on the other?

I recall using a few of those sorts of cans when I was really young. Are there any cans that use that 'peel and roll' strip as an opening now? I bet not. Still, a cool feature. :tu:

Sounds like the Swiss Champ is the knife for you!
Wait....from SAK Wiki: "The five-layer Deluxe Angler, also known as the Waterman, adds the scissors and hook to the Angler and was an older model, also sporting the fish inlay. "
That'd give you your trio of scaler, scissors, and pliers. :tu:

How come your Deluxe Tinker has Fish scales?
Because it is my favorite "Fishing Tinker"! ;)
The Handyman is a great fishing SAK, too. As is the Swiss Champ. But when I finally got a Deluxe Tinker, I knew I had found the SAK I wanted to take fishing (I don't need the scaler). So, I put a set of fish scales on it to recognize this DT as my "Fishing TInker". :tu:

SUPER Tinker Tuesday? Now that's what I'm talking about!
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
The Super Tinker is a great model and this particular knife has done a lot of great work for me. I took it with me to Colorado a few months ago when I went to help my sister and her family get set up in their new house when they moved. I used every tool on this SAK over the course of the 4 days I was there - including the wire stripper on the bottle opener! My brother-in-law is a software developer and works from home so we ran CAT6 all over that house.
Great SAK and made some great memories with it too.

Yes for the Super! Need that scissors!

I wish the Deluxe Tinker weren't quite so heavy feeling in the pocket!
There's such a big difference in size/weight between the Super and the Deluxe.

How hard of a mod is it to swap a serrated blade onto a Tinker or Super Tinker?

Agree, love my gifted Tinker, need that scizzors!! :salute:

Well, I'm not carrying a Tinker today exactly... but I am carrying a Tinker cousin, the Evolution 11!
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
From what I've read, it's actually been discontinued as of 2021. That's sad because it's actually as close as you're going to get to a Sportsman with the back Phillips. I got lucky enough to find it brand new at a decent price on eBay, so I snagged it.

No, it is a post production Kramer from the '90. I'm currently searching for more information, but for now it seems that Schaller made this in Czech republic from parts of Kramer and ESP.

I don't see a difference except for blade type. My mods consist of swapping lanyards lol but it should be - take plain blade off, put serrated Weekender on and re- assemble, yes?

I like that!

I can't participate in Tinker Tuesday this week because I am on the home stretch of the Camper Challenge. But I do have a sort of philosophical question...
Does anyone else think of the Hiker and Fieldmaster as being part of the Tinker family despite the word "Tinker" not appearing in their names?
Because I do.
-
As do I, up to and including the Master Craftsman and Craftsman.
-
I agree. But would like more if the "super" and the "deluxe" have totally different names. Without the tinker in the name. I love the colorful pallet of names Victorinox came out through the years.
-
They certainly have! :D
-
My favorite model. 2 84mms including a nice 80s one I got new old stock on Ebay. I think the 84mm Tinker is my overall favorite SAK, even though I waver some time.

It's Tuesday so it was Tinker Small :salute:

I missed Tinker Tuesday! Oh well... :hatsoff:
-
Nice Nitecore too, worth it?
-
I know it's not Tuesday any more, but I've been carrying a 91mm Tinker in my pocket for about a week straight now. I really like the 2 layer SAKs for loose pocket carry and they pair well with a 58mm like my Rambler.
The back Phillips may not be the most useful tool Victorinox has ever made, but I do get some use out of it from time to time. And I find it to be useful just as much, if not more often, than the corkscrew despite the multiple "unofficial" uses of the corkscrew that we all know about. The corkscrew might have more uses than the back Phillips but... they still don't seem to come up very often for me, even combined. :dunno:
YMMV, though. Everyone's life and circumstances are different, after all.
The other thing I like about the back Phillips is the relatively smooth profile and feel in the hand that it gives a SAK. It carries a little slimmer in the pocket and feels a good bit nicer in the hand than the corkscrew does sometimes. At least I think so. Basically, it's as close to a 91mm Recruit as I'm likely to get!
-
Agree. Thought you Had to have the CS but that Philips is ok. Will be Tinkering more!
-
I can go either way. Personally, I don’t find that I use either the corkscrew or the back Phillips very often regardless of which I happen to have on me.
I do like having the awl back there though!
-
Happy Tinker Tuesday :salute:

 Tony!

Nice Nitecore too, worth it?
It's gotten us through several Disney adventures and a few nights in the wild. I like it!

I didn't know there was a Tinker Tuesday. I did use this one to open mail myself. Does anybody see anything different about this particular one? Best wishes. Gary [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

Hmmmm is it a Tinker Small? Hard to tell from a pic.....
-
...I just dug out mine and added the black TP and TW from SKS...
-
91mm, Tony. Let's see if anyone else will take a guess. My sister bought that Tinker in Switzerland about 1991 maybe. After my Dad retired, he started carrying it. He kept it in his pocket as long as he was able to handle things. Then I laid it back. I carry it now and then. The scales got a good polish just yesterday. It was the first black SAK I had ever seen. There is something different however. Take a good look. Best wishes and happy Tinker Tuesday to awl. Best wishes G
-
You ground off the key ring.
-
Bingo. Our sharp-eyed friend from Canada got it first try. When Dad started carrying the Tinker, he complained about the key ring. I took it off. He carried it a day or two. He complained about the key ring nub. So I took a Dremel and cut and ground it off. No more complaints.
Dad has gone down that long canyon trail where the tracks all point in one direction. All going out and none coming back. The black de-horned Tinker is mine now. It does feel better without the ring and nub.
There is no prize for the correct answer, but if you are ever down here I will see to it that you get a nice gold star pasted on your head. For SAK excellence above and beyond the call. Best wishes. Gary
-
By the way, I did learn something from our good friend Tony. I never knew there was such a thing as black toothpicks and tweezers. Thank you, Tony. Best wishes. Gary

Thought I'd post a pic since I didn't for Spartan Saturday. Here's the Super Tinker with the space scales. I couldn't resist the UFO poster with it.

Whew! You saved my hide on that one, D12. I almost forgot Tinker Tuesday. No post and I would have been ridiculed by certain parties that I have been ridiculing in the past. Thank you. Thank you. Best wishes. Gary

I’m glad, Gary. My Tinkers have been seeing more action lately so it was fun to bust one out especially for Tuesday.

I think you should consider introducing yourself through the New Member Forum section of this site. Don't have to write a big story. Where you are from. What you like. A little about who you are, if you feel comfortable with that. It lets everyone get familiar with you a little. Make some friends. Best wishes. Gary

I had my Super Tinker in my pocket today. I even used it to help repair some desk chairs at work today (it’s not my job but I like to fix things and I’m not going to sit around and wait for someone else to do it).
I didn’t get a chance to grab a picture though. Not sure how my new co-workers would react to that in an office setting.
-
I hope your co-workers have brains, Marlowe. I'm not at all sure that I would take my SAK out of my pocket at a work site now. All it takes is one troublemaker deciding to go trembling to the head honcho and with one malicious stroke to tearfully plead that ,"Marlowe has a KNIFE. He was waving it around and I was so frightened." Frightened is pronounced fry-end. Middle of the word T's must now be replaced with glottal stops.
Personally I would leave the office furniture broken and let them sit on the floor until they got somebody from maintenance to come. I know you were doing the right thing, but when you live in an asylum anything sane seems crazy. Best wishes. Gary

:iagree: I know, they love it when your needed, fry-end do good but make others do their job!

Have the leaves fallen on Throgg's Neck, Tony? I tried to crank my Cub, but the battery was flat. Got that charged up and mulched the leaves with the mowing deck. The wind had banked them up against my siding, so I did have to rake a little. The wildlife people have been dropping rabies vaccine laced bait here by air. There have been some rabies problems for the last couple of years. So many raccoons here. Have to be on my guard. Best wishes. G
;)
-
Ha! Yes racoons are having a party in my
Yard! Trees are nice, especially out around the Pelham Bay- City Island patkway- the bay leading to the sound is flat calm!
-
For Tinker Tuesday, I carried this close cousin of the Tinker family… A Hiker!
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

What are we going to do with you, Marlowe. The Tinker Thinkers dropped the yellow flag on this one and were talking about the Mandatory Noogie penalty. I stepped in and saved your hide. You owe me one.
Marlowe made a mistake viewers. He meant to post this Hiker on the MiniChamp challenge thread. This is the REAL photo of Marlowe's Tinker. ::)

Now I will post my own Tinker photo. I don't know why I did a close up. I actually polished out most of the scars on this one before. Black Tinker. Not carrying it at present. MiniChamp challenge and all that. We all know that there must be only one. MiniChamp only for 30 days. No backup 91mm. I even used rubber gloves to touch this one for a photo. Best wishes. G

That black looks good! One of these days I'm going to have to pick up either a black 91mm or some black scales to swap out. The only black SAK I have is a Classic SD but I need a big one too!

Hi Montana,
I'm still waiting for my 2 pound package of frozen deer burger. I lost that black Tinker after a hu.... outdoor activity. It slipped out of my pocket when I put my ri..... outdoor equipment on a bench built for a pre outdoor activity purpose. It stayed lost for a few days. When I finally found it, the blades would barely open. The steel didn't rust but was beginning to discolor. The aluminum liners had started to oxidize, evidently. Felt like sandpaper in the joints. I oiled it up and everything turned out ok. Best wishes. Gary

So far, I've only been able to get out opening weekend. Missed last weekend and will this weekend as well. My daughter turns 7 on Friday, so we have a big birthday party planned on Saturday. We have Most of Thanksgiving week off of school, so we will be hitting the woods hard then. Knock on wood, none of my SAKs have spent any unsupervised time alone outdoors. I'm glad to hear you found it, and it wasn't much worse for wear!

You make a good point, and exercising some caution these days is always wise, but I now work at a small non-profit organization and everyone who works there wears a lot of hats. We can't wait for someone to come from "maintenance"... there's no such thing! I'm basically it (my actual job is that I'm a computer programmer, but...). I've brought some tools to the office on multiple days now to work on a few things, etc. I've only been there 3 months now but, already, when something breaks around the office they call my name or wait for me to come in the next day (hybrid schedule).
Fortunately, pocket knives are very common where I live, even in the city. But don't worry - I haven't pulled out the main blade! I've only used the bottle opener/screw driver and can opener at the office. If I do need a blade, I'll definitely go with the small blade first.
That said, I've found that the common wisdom about SAKs still holds true - people see a SAK, especially the traditional red handles, and it's totally non-threatening. They see it as a "tool" and not as "a knife" (I realize that a knife IS a tool but you know how people are sometimes...).
.
.
.
Also... Thanks for the assist on the Hiker post. Guess I got a little excited there. I mean, it does have a back Phillips!!! :dunno:
-
I wouldn't quit opening Coke bottles for the pretty office girlies either, Marlowe. :D Sounds like you have some workers that are using their noodles. Happy to make the assist on the Tuesday Tinker whatever. Also you have some of the better MiniChamp pix. Keep it up. You rascal. >:D
Best wishes as always. Gary :hatsoff:

I can carry a Huntsman in my pocket and not really notice it. But the Deluxe Tinker is juuuuust heavy enough that I am consciously aware of it a lot of the time.

Teacher toted a tinker to Tinker Tuesday today. Terrific. I saw a fairly nice buck in my backyard this evening. Whitetail of course. Fires in the area. Mountains look smoky in the distance. Dry as powder here. No rain for weeks. Town is on water restrictions and there is a burning ban.
I took a Tinker photo, then put it away. Only MiniChamp for me. For a while longer anyway. What sort of knife do you carry on your outdoor meat seeking activity? By the way, you always have some great photos. Best wishes. G

We had snow and rain last week and more rain this week. I always enjoy having recess duty unless it is cold and rainy. I stayed true to the Minichamp as far as use today. We had a really nice Whitetail buck in our yard on the Ring camera a couple of weeks ago, but lately, it has only been does.
As far as meat seeking knives, I always carry a Buck 110 that my wife gave me on our one year dating anniversary 15 years ago. I've scratched a little tally mark into the brass bolster for each animal it has been used on, and it is up to 36 now, I believe. I also have a Havalon in my vest pocket just because it is so light and compact. It rarely gets used, though. I am mighty sentimental, so in my pack, I also carry the Case Arapaho that my dad gave me. It was a gift from my mom to him on their first wedding anniversary 35 years ago. I will most likely never use it, but it is always with me in the woods

Here’s the standard Tinker I had in my pocket today as back up for my Minichamp for the challenge. I had to use the Tinker too!

Who wouldn't fall in love with this apple green no-cross Tinker?
-
That's a good looker. Should be easy to find if you drop it too. When I was a lad, I asked someone why anybody would buy the yellow handled Case knives when they could buy the nice bone handled ones. My pal Lewis would only carry yellow. Naturally it was because they were easier to find if you laid one down. I read somewhere that was why SAKs were red. Easy to see if you dropped one in the snow. It would be my luck to drop one in soft snow and have it disappear from sight. Best wishes. Gary

I am, uh, still Tinkering here on Thursday. The Minichamp challenge is going on and I thought it wise to carry a 91mm SAK as a back up during the challenge, giving everything a good honest attempt with the Minichamp first, of course.
I've been carrying a standard 91mm Tinker as my back up SAK (and I've needed it a couple of times too). It's not a model I normally carry very often but it's such a great, yet simple tool. I know all the arguments about why a Spartan would be better, and I've used a SAK corkscrew in many different ways myself over the years, so I get it. But the Tinker just makes for a slightly slimmer, smoother carry both in the pocket and in the hand.
Just thought I would post a little appreciation for the standard Tinker. I think it gets overlooked a lot when SAKs like the Super Tinker and Fieldmaster are around. And lots of folks like to talk down the back Phillips too.
It's a good SAK and I'm enjoying carrying it!

I've been doing the same. My first SAK and first real knife was a Tinker so it will always have a special place with me. I still have my first one almost 30 years later and carry it all the time. I don't understand the hate on the back Phillips either. If it doesn't work, I'll find another screwdriver but for all instances in which I've felt it necessary to use it, it has been more than adequate. Like you said, it is slimmer and feels much better in my hand as well.

Sure, love to. We were visiting our son who was working in Munich so spent a weekend in Luzern. We were able to ferry across the lake to Brunnen (highly recommend!) to visit the Vic store there where , by appt, you can self-assemble a Spartan or a Climber which is a lot of fun. Side note, we were unable to book a factory tour in Ibach. Of course, if you want you can swap the corkscrew for the phillips and then it becomes Tinker or Super Tinker. You can pick your scales (all colors/combos available) as well (I didn't show but I went blue on the front/red on the back and got the front inscribed). Actually my wife and my son all put together knives. Takes about 20 min a knife for us amateurs--our guide told us the pros in the factory (which is just down the road) can do it in under 30 sec (obviously depending on the model). The inscribed blade is only available there and only if you do the self assemble. Not sure about other stores, but there you can get custom scales even if they do the assembly.
Anyway, the process was fascinating and got me hooked on collecting. my ocd kicks in with wanting every model in every color. although that seems a little silly.

Exactly! Thank you! I love doing it. No one knows about it so it's a mystery. Makes me smile when I see a kid playing with one they just happened to find somewhere.

One of my best friends is a teacher. The passion at which she talks about her students is wonderful. I'm going to share this with her as I'm sure she will love it.
Just the fact that you are doing this let me know you are among those teachers who will and likely have made a difference in these kids lives. The mystery makes it all the more fun.

Have a Hostess Fruit Pie on me, fellas. Those things were sooooo good. Another good thing about the translucent red scales is that they taste like raspberries when you lick them. Wait a minute.... I will get back to you later on that. Might not be true. Maybe something I dreamed?
Best wishes. G
:dunno:
I'd love to hear what you find out! Does that mean translucent blue tastes like blueberries? Or maybe the results will be like when my uncle told my mom the bottom of the pool smelled like watermelon when they were kids and she fell for it?
-

That watermelon trick sounds like a typical kid gimmick. Good memories. I did a test lick on the translucent red and I have to tell you it doesn't really taste like anything except plastic. It did smell a little like peanut butter, but that could have been from my fingers.
Good lookin SAK there, Mac. My sister is leaving for Portugal on Friday, so if you see her wave or something. Best wishes. G

Though it maybe a bit hard, working from home these days...., since like in the last year or so, taking care of mum that unfortunately has cancer... crappy year this was..
But anyway..., i digress...

Hang tough there, Mac. I've been exactly where you are now. Aging parent with Alzheimer's and finally cancer. Toughest job in the world. Prayers and best wishes. G
Also enjoying the raccoon SAKs. I feed them now and then. Sometimes they get there first. Sometimes the possums do. Great pix. Best wishes. G

Yes, sick relative, then wife's hip. You can do it!!

I gave my racoons some nice Cayane Pepper. I don't think they liked it and they left...
I bought some suet blocks containing pepper in efforts to keep the squirrels from devouring them. It didn't work at all. Must not have been strong enough. I used cayenne pepper on one of my trees to keep a beaver from chewing on it as well. It worked for a day or two until the rain washed it off.
-
The vermin eat most everything around here. I put out some leftover kidney beans, and nothing would eat them. It's a little annoying to have scavengers that would joyfully eat something dead they found in the field snub my good kidney beans. Of course, if they had been that good, there would have been no leftovers. Maybe.
Temps will be down below the cow shed tonight. I usually cook a big pot of beans on cold days. I wonder if I have any kidney beans.... Best wishes. G

I'm a bit ashamed to admit this because I've had my Tinker for 30yrs, but I just noticed about a month ago that my Phillips has the can key. I can't believe I never noticed.
I still remember opening up cans of spam with a can key.

Tinker Day,
Tinker Day,
Tinker all the Way.
Oh what fun it is to play,
With your Tinker every day.
Might as well post a photo. I don't know if this Santa swindle is still in business. Probably something similar? Maybe you got a letter when you were a child? Waited in line to sit in the old man's lap at a store? Told him your dream wish? Got a solemn reminder to be good. And a striped candy cane. Best wishes Tinkers. Gary (IMR)

I always look forward to Tinker Tuesday! And because of this knife, a set if translucent red scales came in the mail yesterday. Just have to get them slapped on.

Got a nice blue Tinker I'm going to clean up the liners and do a scale swap on before I give it to my brother-in-law as his Christmas gift.

(I, uh, haven’t had occasion to use the pliers in the past three days but they’re fun to play with…)

Hey, and it's so cool. Just think. If you had a Super Tinker you would have the whole package. A complete Tink-o-rama. A Tri-tinkerfecta. Best wishes. Gary

The Econoline was my first SAK from my dad when I was 8 or 10. I've had it almost 30 years. Its one of my most prized possessions.
-
That blue looks fantastic, too. Don't anybody else but Montana read this next sentence, okay?
Here goes. You know you could have stopped with that first gift from Dad and been complete as far as pocketknife needs, don't you? The rest of it is just not needed. I could have done the same with my everyday carry. I had some SAKs. Bought a few, found some here and there for a buck or two, got a few gifts. I really could have quit then. But, you know the rest of the story. Best wishes. Gary

For sure, that first Tinker would have filled my needs forever. But what's the fun in that? I still carry it often. I try to carry all of my SAKs at some point. I'm not a safe queen collector. My kids will get them all some day.

I finally got the chance to use the pliers!
My son was playing with one of my big LEGO sets and dropped a small piece down in the set. Neither of us could reach it but the Deluxe Tinker pliers were perfect for the job. I was able to grab the laser blaster and get it back into the hand of the 1980s-style LEGO astronaut.
My son (who has the plastic toy SAK) asked if his Swiss Army knife had "grabbers". :D
(To be fair, I have used the pliers on things before and they performed well. This is just the first time I had a chance to use the pliers since I started carrying the DT again this past week.)
-
Nice story Marlowe! :salute:
-
There hasn't been nearly enough Tinkering around here lately. So, I decided to lay down the law (the Scout's law) and dust off a Tinker. If you don't join in, it's your own fault. Or maybe you just don't have a Tinker? That's a little sad if I tink about it.

Later edit. I occurred to me that I covered up the story in the right column, so here is the story and another Tinker. That's okay. No tinks necessary. G

That’s a great story in the Scout handbook. I don’t remember that one from mine but it may have been a slightly later edition.
-
Nice Tinkers from all. Looks like a pretty prolific Tinker Time. I think the Scout story is true to life. Do unto others. It works. Even if it doesn't work, you didn't add to the chaos by making a nasty remark or doing someone else dirty. Best wishes. Gary
PS I think the Scout Manual is from 1959. I will look and check. G
:D
-
My Scout manual would have been the one that was current in the 80s and 90s.
Great advice though - the golden rule!

Ok Gary wins.

I just couldn't let you Tinker alone. Some old stuff I hadn't seen in ages. I found the old cap buster somewhere. It must be over 90 years old. Best wishes. Gary
:D

Love it!
-
I actually had a cap buster like the old one I found when I was a pup. The hammer and trigger are one piece with a spring and toggle over to make a snap. You have to tear off one paper cap at a time and slide it down into a slot in front of the hammer. Zinc of course. They must have made those things for a really long time. I knew the old man who owned the one I found, so I got a pretty got date on it from the 1930s.
The chicken looking thing is a whistle. Yellow on one side and green on the other. It has a little paddle-wheel thing that spins inside when you toot on it. No info on the owl. Don't remember where it came from.
I posted in the Keychain Tool section a couple of small multis that were in the same bunch of stuff. See if they look familiar. It is the rare family that some member didn't have one. Best wishes. Gary

MTSAK - I love those ruby scales.

Is that the one you got from Sos24? Tinkers are great. I thought about putting a Spartan in my pocket after next week. Might just carry my Dad's old black Tinker a while. I would hate to lose it. It doesn't have a ring anymore. Just have to be careful. I already lost it once, but got lucky and found it again. Best wishes. Gary

What a great looking Super T, Aztec. What are you carrying everyday now? Tony, I might have to figure out some kind of lanyard for the black Tinker. Dad complained about the ring and the ring nub, so..... I ground off the nub. I will figure out something. Best wishes. Gary

Man, did I have a Tinker Tuesday!
Today at work, someone asked if I could take down a large television off a swivel wall mount and re-mount it on one of those rolling TV stands. We have an office tool kit - it's one of those terrible, cheap all-in-ones you buy on Amazon. It's missing a few pieces, and I've started taking a few small tools of my own on the days I go into the office.
The bad news was the screwdriver has disappeared out of the kit. The good news is that I had my Deluxe Tinker in my pocket!
The screws on the back of the TV mount had obviously been put in with a power drill - they were extremely tight! So, I got to employ the strategy of using the back Phillips to (carefully...) get the screws started and then switch to the can opener to take them all the way out.
No pliers were needed today, but I think the extra bulk of the DT helped with the back Phillips use on this occasion.
-
Had my Deluxe Tinker in my pocket all day but traveled all day and didn't take a picture. This Super Tinker is always within reach also, and I've been using it for tying and trimming slingshot bands lately. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240221/55299364a138f8f470283fd0e092fe44.jpg)

Looks like a good one to me, Jeff. Just needs a little "tinkering". Good to hear from Tony as well. Everybody be sure to show up for Wenger Wednesday tomorrow.
Coyote was screaming its head off a while ago. Don't usually do that in the day. This thing sounds like a wolf. Doesn't make coyote squealey sounds. Howls like a horror movie beast. I call it Werecoyote. It usually whips up the band into a frenzy at night.
There is a rabies threat here. The wildlife boys have had two projects lately where they have been dropping rabies vaccination baits from planes and throwing them out from trucks. Foxes and raccoons are the big threats. Coyotes, not so much as the numbers go. Might as well put in another deer trail camera photo. Nothing else to do, right? Best wishes. G

Hip hip hooray for Tinker Tuesday! I've got my Tinker+ along this week. As you can see from the bandaid, she is officially mine now. Cit the top of my finger, pulling the blade through my Vic sharpener like a dingdong. Once a knife cuts me, I give it a name, and as the superstition goes, it's officially mine. I've named her Ruby, and we are bonded for life now. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240227/ec6b223951264131a08f15a5daa66b6e.jpg)

Great seeing all the Tinker love.
-
I carried a Tinker through high school (they used to allow them back then) then college. After college, I happened upon a Kershaw Leek that became my daily for many years. Then about 2yrs ago I rediscovered my original Tinker which I think I bought in 1992-93. Since then I was reading up on them and watching videos about them, the possible modifications, etc. Then last year I discovered this awesome forum. Haven't looked back since. :D
-
Happy Tinker Tuesday. If you have been following along, you have seen one of my black Tinkers already. I am carrying a no name multi to do a 7 day challenge. Might stretch it out to 15 days. I doubt it. That is over on the Cheap but Cheerful board. I am actually carrying this knife based multi every day. No SAKs. No Leatherman. Feel free to look in and say hello.
I made too many posts yesterday and made myself annoying. I am dialing it back today.
I took this Tinker vs No Name photo to post later this week. See if you can tell which is the Tinker. This one has the old can key slot on the phillips driver. Useful back when corned beef came with a strip you had to crank off. Little key soldered to the bottom of the tin. Ever use one? Best wishes. G
:) [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

You can never have too many posts...
Wow... what a stark difference. Looks like you could chew up the no-name brand way more easily.
My old Tinker has the can key slot. I remember mom letting me open the cans of corned beef or spam because I thought it was really cool to use the can key. It's amazing how simple little things bring back good memories.

You can see the marks on the No Name Phillips driver. I tried it this morning on a screw in a plastic portable radio casing. It wouldn't move the screw but distorted itself and the screw head. I stopped before I wrecked the screw. Then I tried the Tinker Phillips. The screw was either tight or had a sealant on it. It broke loose with a click. The Tinker dug into the damaged screw and turned it out with ease. Tightened it right back like it was with no effort. Autocorrupt wanted to change phillips to Phillips, so I let it. Best wishes. G

Happy Tinker Tuesday. Might as well show another knot. Ideal for joining a line to a leader. So they say. There is no reason not to call it a Victorinox toothpick knot, if that's what you want to use. Not too many people carry a nail around. Even though generally speaking, you would tie this one before you go fishing. Probably have a nail at home. Best wishes. Gary

Thanks for the mention Gary.
Tinker is still standing by with his SAK family. :salute:

No way to put a key ring on the Tinker, Tony. I tried a little of everything. Short of epoxy, or drilling a hole. If it had been a Spartan, there would be no difficulty. Just loop a lanyard around the corkscrew and close it. Works perfectly.
I carried an Opinel all day. Great carry knife. Don't even know it is in your pocket. Best wishes. G
