What file patterns are there? It looks like vine and I can't make out the other one.

Thanks. Sorry for the fileworks details, I try to improve this. You're right there are vine fileworks and other more "modern" patterns. I realize about ten patterns (arrows...).
-
WOW!! You have a potential client here! I would love a mammoth 58mm with filework.
-
Thanks microbe and rickinFL. I can try to find another mammooth scales if you like.
-
Very nice work. Your filework is very good.
I must get my files out and do some more knives.

Break out the mop! Triple drool award!

Thanks to all !
Most impressive! :salute: I really like the filework on this Nomad. 8) What is the pattern on the springs?
It's the most classical pattern for the outside of springs, blade and tools. You can adjust the length between the patterns for a different result (here it's very close). It's symetric on the two springs. For the inside it's a modern pattern.
-
Spatha, here's a better picture (I hope) with natural light of the Nomad :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/victor10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=185&u=17456942)

 Thanks for the new photos, Michel. Those pictures came out really sharp and well exposed so now I can behold the intricacy of that file work in all its glory. Truly inspirational work.

The last one, a Victorinox Spartan with Cassia du Siam scales. A wood from La Réunion island. Main blade fileworked with a classic pattern, and also the visible part of the back of the two springs. Polished liners :

It looks like wengé but with a much finer texture.

very nice work mate! congrats!

Thanks Sidhartha.
Today I finished a Swisschamp with kudu horn scales. Main blade with vine fileworks. All 8 liners with fileworks, the inside part is simply polished.

Asolutely beautiful filework. How do you do that? I dont know if i would have the patience for that.
-
Thanks a lot Crow. I use all kind of tools (files, abrasives, diamond points...). You can have a try on a 2 mm steel bar. It's quite the thickness of a blade.
-
Here's the last one, an Alox Pioneer which became a deer antler Pioneer. I did brass liners because the Alox scales didn't need liners (the center one is stainless steel). Vine fileworked blade :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_pi10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=196&u=17456942)

What material did you use to make the micarta, just plain cotton or something else?
-
Nice. :tu:
What material did you use to make the micarta, just plain cotton or something else?
Thanks. I bought it, but I think it's cotton. On black micarta we can see dark and light layers.
It's hard to work and to polish.

So sexy... When I tell people everyone needs a gentlemans' knife for dress wear, this is what I'm talking about.
I notice you don't do file work on the scissors.
-
Thanks ironraven.
I would filework quite every piece but some people find it too much (and they may be right) so I try to find a nice looking filework combination.
I did it on the scissors, with the lever (for a better grip when using them), the back and even below the spring. In this case the parcel hook and its spring were also fileworked.
Here's the first one I disassembled for a complete filework (Climber) :
(http://i71.servimg.com/u/f71/17/45/69/42/sak_cl11.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=89&u=17456942)

And the scissors of another Classic SD (sorry for the poor quality of the pic) :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_cl13.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=160&u=17456942)
-
Impressive work here again Michel :tu: You've got some skill, that's for sure :)
-
Thanks a lot Monrogue.
-
I've done the scissors for traction, but nothing like yours- really basic jimping with a file and that's it.
-
2 new ones. First a brown micarta Spartan :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_sp15.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=225&u=17456942)

And an oak burl Excelsior :

(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_ex17.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=229&u=17456942)

A recent Alox Victorinox cigar cutter with fileworked tools and blades :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_ci14.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=237&u=17456942)

It would be better to do brass liners with nice material scales and fileworked springs, but this model is already expensive compared to most common ones.
-
Your work just blows my mind. I would like to see what you could do to a wave or a surge.
that's us mobile
-
Thanks again. I haven't try on these but why not.
-
I bet it would be one sweet looking Surge.
that's us mobile
-
Wow thank you for sharing I really enjoy it especially deer antler scale.

Thanks Glofindel. It's a material I appreciate, which can be nice well polished without being fragile.
-
I tried the most complete 58 mm, the Minichamp with sheep horn scales. All part fileworked with assorted patterns (4 liners, 10 springs, 8 blades and tools) :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_mi10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=239&u=17456942)
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_mi11.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=240&u=17456942)
I wanted to use stabilized and dyed mammooth molar, but this is too fragile for a 5 layer 58 mm. It will be for a 2 layer.
Some others models first tries are in progress.
-
Another try with this deer antler custom Hunter Pro. Fileworked blade with vine pattern (only filework is polished the rest of the blade is coated) :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_hu13.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=242&u=17456942)
-
Another beautiful work. Your work is just amazing. How long have you been doing this?
-
Thanks Crow. It's longer than an usual Victorinox folder. The shape of the under is more complex than 111 mm and the stainless steel liners are embossed. So we have to sand the embossed part near the lock back system or to mill the scales. Original scales are like Wenger ones, they fit over the liners which are a bit smaller.
I think I will dissassemble one to see if making brass liners is possible. The pins seem to be 4 mm or more.
-
Another try with a recent model, the Hunter XT. Deer antler scales and all parts fileworked :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_hu14.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=243&u=17456942)
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/sak_hu15.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=244&u=17456942)
The following ones will be more simple with less fileworks. I'll also try Hunter XS and Dual Pro.
-
These are like jewellery...
-
Thanks Crow.
-
Oh yes... I like the filework. I tried once on a blade, it took me too long and didnt look good enough so I gave up. :D How long does it take you to do the filework on such a beauty as that?
-
It's hard to say exactly. Blades are not a problem but the liners take more time (like thin tools and springs). When done you have to polish all fileworks and whether the pattern to remove polishing paste in the grooves.
The longest to do were the Wenger Cigar 36 and Minichamp with all parts fileworked (about 5 to 6 hours).
-
Beautiful craftsmanship, with the knives really becoming like pieces of jewelry. Thanks for sharing pics of your work. :tu:
-
Thank you very much chivaceae. The next should be a Forester. I also like to see mods by others members here.
-
That is a Hunter Pro that is worth my money!!! Très incroyable, félicitations!!
-
Thanks WWW. It was an order but there will be others. I have disassembled one. It will allow to filework the lock back and the spring.
-
Stag handle is unique
-
Thanks singleshot03. It's a material I like wich gives always a different result.
-
Here's a particular model, the watch opener with plane tree burl scales. All parts are fileworked with a classic pattern and a moder one for the inside of spring.

A different style for an Excelsior. It's assembled like an Alox with brass scales and pins. All parts fileworked including scales with different patterns :

Hi all,
Here's my latest SAK, another custom deer antler Hunter Pro with fileworked liners and blade :
(http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/17/45/69/42/sak_hu10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=265&u=17456942)
(http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/17/45/69/42/sak_hu11.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=266&u=17456942)

I avoided fileworks on the lock back lever and spring to keep the coating, and just did the less on the blade.
And better details of the two last ones shown before :
The plane tree burl watch opener :

Great work as always, Michel. :hatsoff:
Nice to see you back here. :D
How do you like the Hunter? I've heard a lot of mixed feelings about that one.
-
Thanks enki !
I think it's a great model but very surprising for a SAK. There are indeed mixed feelings according to the use.
I have some recent other SAK to post.
-
Wow, you've got some serious fileworking skills my friend :tu:
-
Thanks Monrogue !

Super nice figure on plane tree, I've never seen the burl variant
-
MWDP: now that's some rather ornate work. Reminds me of the engraving on some of the fancier firearms.
-
Those are just wow!!! Love the Deluxe Tinker!!

Very nice, reminds me of wenge :)
-
Thanks MWDP ! It looks like wengé with a thinner texture.
-
A Spartan with damasteel blade, brass liners (except the center one which is original aluminium) and AZ desert ironwood.
Brass liners are 1 mm instead of 0.8 mm. It allows a nicer filework :

You made a hunter pro look good! I actually started to sand and polish the blade on the one I took apart and its very pitted and needed alot of elbow grease to make it look like a standard SAK blade.
Good work!
-
Thanks to all ! Syph, your Hunter Pro will be nice with the usual polishing for the blade. The coating is fragile.
A grey anodized titan Climber with a little filework. Damasteel blade (no outer liners on this one) :

0.2 mm make all the difference for fileworks.

I wanted to try something different, so here's a Climber with brass bolsters and deer antler scales. Fileworked blade, and scissors layer (vine pattern).

And a recent Victorinox Delémont Ranger 57 Hunter with dyed deer antler scales. The Wenger version had more liners, so I didn't fileworked the liners on this one. The cut for the button is much more difficult on the Victorinox ones.

Agreeing with Aloha here, that work is superb. I really like how a "aggressively" styled stock knife became a much less intimidating tool in your hands.

Thanks Aloha and Fortytwo !
The same material but a différent use. 2 colors brown Paperstone for popular 111 mm : Nomad and Trailmaster.

Absolutely stunning! Did you remove the lock entirely so is now just a slip joint (therefore UK knife law-friendly...)?

Thanks to all !

No, its a classic liner lock but the lock could be removed in this case. It would be also possible on side lock 111 mm which are difficult to mod with their button and spring.

Thanks Poncho !

Amazing work Michel :tu: :o - I had missed this thread until now!
Sorry guys - Can I ask the really dumb questions?
Is file work done all by hand with tiny little files? And following various historical or documented patterns?
If so the hours of work must be staggering - How long? say, to do the back of a blade?
And does the knife have to be disassembled to do springs and liners?
But I have to make a terrible admission - Despite appreciating the amazing craftsmanship - I don't think I like it !! :( Sorry :o
Not quite sure why - Maye it looks a little messy ??? Especially when you mix up the patterns - Maybe I am just used to the clean flat lines of a standard SAK
However I gotta say I do like the Ranger and Sentinel - just above - The bolster is fab and I guess I like the simpler patterns.
-
Thanks Huntsman. I know that not everybody likes filework. I did some without or just the blade.
Yes it's done by hand with files and/or other tools like abrasives, the result needs to be polished. SAK part have a good finish but on other knives the work after fileworking is longer to get a nice finish.
The first step is to mar the blade or spring to get a regular pattern. It may be long for a complete work, with symmetry between the springs or tools. For liners and spring the knife has to be disassembled but its better to work on spare blades rather than the whole knife.
There are traditional patterns but creation is possible.

Hi Michel
Once again, stunning work. :salute: :salute: :salute: :tu: :tu: :tu:
Just 2 questions.......
The paper stone you refer to, is that paper micarta?
I assume you don't anneal and re-heat treat the blades & springs for the file work, how long do your files last?
-
Thanks to all !

Paperstone is a material with recycled paper and natural resins (starch and cashew nut). It's different from micarta but with great performances. You can Google it for more informations.
Indeed I keep the heat treatment for blades, tools and springs. Classic files, even with the best quality, are not the best choice. Diamond files but also abrasive and diamond bits are better. Materials to work vary from alox liners to stainless steel. This way each tool has a normal lifetime.
