Title: Don't you judge me .
Post by: Aloha on March 10, 2017, 08:43:59 PM
I like Bear Grylls.  There I've said it.  Its not why I got this knife tho.  Bear, no disrespect but I got the knife because the man selling it practically gave it to me.  The PE part was so dull and the spine where the ferro rod was to be stuck was trashed.  The ferro rod is nearly done.

I spent some time re profiling the PE and cleaned up the ferro rod area on the spine.   :D

He seems like a great guy, but takes way to much risks to be called "survivalist".
Good shows for sure but nothing a common sensed man/women would do.

And for the love of God, cook your food before eating it!

I'll tell ya what, I struck my own ferro rod and it was fine.  My sharpening also wasn't shabby as I was able to feather some wood and start a little fire.

I was entertained when he took Shaq out.  Survival, well I much prefer Les as well as others but I'm sure he'd kick my arse any day of the week.

At least, that knife has seen a lot of -presumably good- use.

Not everyone is manly enough to rock something from the Bear Grylls collection.

Bears very entertaining  :D I may use his survival techniques or try and survive with any of his tactics ::) but he is good at what he does.  Not survival but entertainment  :D Glad to see you were able to get the knife back into use as well :tu:

Is this basically a lmf ll?

Nice catch!
I almost bought the PE version when it was on sale before xmas. :)

Is this basically a lmf ll?

I believe its closer to the Prodigy. If I remember correctly its almost identical to the prodigy, but with cheaper steel, and cheaper plastic sheath.

I just find the orange scheme, the BG initial... on these items cheap, cheesy,... well, downright fugly

For sure.  I was telling my friend there was really no reason to put BG on the knife handle.  It has his signature on the knife and the sheath.  I don't mind the color scheme actually.  The handle is fricken comfy as heck.  Its a cheesy way I guess for Gerber and Bear to make some money.  From my understanding the initial run was defective, the pommel was breaking.  Mine appears to be the redo and the pommel is actually decent idea.  Not a fan of the combo edge but the dude just wanted to get rid of it.

Bear Grylls is an icon. So when I saw a BG knife in the shop window, I wanted it.
I guess it won't help me much in a survival situation though. (Compact Scout, 2.5'' blade).

Well how about these monstrosities, I saw them a couple of weeks ago at the British Shooting Show, pretty sure everyone that walked past them laughed at them

As to the knife, yes it does look like the LMF II, but the handle is a different shape and the pommel doesn't have the skull breaker on it. I'd also the guess that the steel is different

I don't mind his entertainment value, even though I think he's a risk taking fool. His show should be called "What Not To Do In A Survival Situation".

But where I draw the line is, when someone is proven to be a total fake. Like when Bear was supposed to be in some South Pacific jungle island, but in reality he and his camera team were staying in a near by high dollar resort in Hawaii every night. Or he's supposed to be out in the middle of some desert and in the background theres a highway and a speck of a car going by.

If someone  gave me a BG branded anything, I'd toss it in the nearest trash can.

Never heard of him before and I don't watch television so I have no clue as to what he is all about. Bought this one awhile back and it is actually a pretty decent knife. Think I paid about $10 for it.

Bear Grylls is an icon.

No he is not. A TV entertainer as most. His show had too many stunts and showoffs, his approach to situations were mostly brash for shock values. Then slapping his signatures, initials... on products all over the places, what a sellout! The BG Gerber gears are hideous looking. They may be ok stuffs, but I will not touch them. Many Gerber tools are not good looking to begin with (Suspension, Bullrush..., also the Crucial, but I like the green paint), the orange scheme of BG line just brought it down to a lower level. They might have looked less fugly if they have full orange on handles.

Well the knife is now in the hands of my roommate.  She saw a smaller version of this knife and wanted it.  I told her she should spend a bit more and get a Mora Black.  She has a Mora HD and wanted something "beater".  I can understand that so I gave it to her so she can abuse it.  We'll see how it holds up.  She's been know to break sledge hammers heads .

I'm a big BG fan. Bear seems like a good man and I like his knives and his work with the boy scouts. I do agree that he takes way too many risks on Man Vs. Wild though, but I think it's all in the spirit of adventure,  As for me, the two I have are outstanding knives

The video I posted showing what the knife can withstand was impressive.  Its a decent knife IMO.  I liked the color scheme and overall the knife took a nice edge.  She really liked the smaller one and well I'm a sucker for anyone ( ladies ) who loves knives so she had to have it.

If you really want to be judged negatively you could have paid some ridiculous amount for a Gil Hibben. At least that BG is pretty straight forward.
