That compass goes great with those scales. Does it work well? Seems like all the mini compasses I buy aren't accurate.

Nice...I wanna complete the collection one day, need Rainer and McKinley. I like that green too.

Suunto makes the best compact compass that is reliable, tough, and as accurate as a compact compass can be.

My best one is a Suunto it pretty much works...has a thermometer too. I like the one you've got there though, good for a lanyard

My currently functioning 4's. Got an older econo scales Huntsman half-restored as well. And another Explorer, pre 1990, but it has a cracked mag glass surround so it's in my parts bin for now.

Explorer present and ready for duty!
-
I'm joining Fast Bill in going with an Explorer for Four Layer Friday!
Actually, every day is four layer day since the Explorer is my EDC! Here is my red Explorer pictured with two new arrival from yesterday. The CT-29 was my Three Layer Thursday carry and will be my secondary carry for awhile. The Leatherman Juice is special since the original Juice S2 colors were grey and orange (as far as I knew). Discovering the Blue Juice S2 was a very happy discovery and it has been a close companion to my EDC SAKs in appreciation of that acquisition.
Jim
P.S., Looks like Danjo & Gareth added their Four Layer Friday carries in the meantime. Looking good!

To be fair I don't carry the Explorer often and I thought it'd make a change (except for last Friday obviously... ahem...). Strictly I always have a soft spot for the Fisherman (yes, yes even with the Fish scaler - it's a great pointy device) and ought to dig mine out more. Maybe next Friday ... maybe

You two have got me thinking that I've not carried my Explorer in far too long. I'll have to fix that soon.

Family members have pointed out that if I really like something, I think that everyone should have one. :)
I don't know what it says about me that I not only have numerous Explorers and EDC one but that I also have one within easy reach of my recliner safely ensconced in a Victorinox sheath.
Life is great with an Explorer!!!

I admit I have a bit of a thing for Space Pens. They work for me and the Bullet model doesn't get quite as much carry time as it might because I try to avoid unnerving the horses ! I just found out they do a Zombie Apocalypse model which made me smile but you can't get it this side of the pond

I've got a Diana 48 in .22 myself, great rifle. :tu: If you are shooting the HW97 in .177 then I highly recommend trying JSB Diabolo RS (7.33 grains). Not all rifles are exactly the same, but mine shoots them like a laser.

Great turnout everyone!! I can't get my wife to take anything but her old Classic... I've tried!!
My wife is very attached to her old and chipped red Classic. I offered to change this keychain Classic for a red minichamp but she nixed it. I did trade her chipped Classic for a new one. On the plus side, ever since I showed her my first old magnifier Explorer, she loved it and thanked me for it (how do they do that so easily?) and it's been in the kitchen ever since. I am happy to report that she uses it frequently. :)

I can't remember the last time I sported a sheath. I broke it out this morning to help me out with my Explorer.

Still sporting the Explorer. I am especially appreciating the grey-framed magnifier after some side by side comparisons in another thread with the Wenger-style magnifier. I even prefer the grey-framed 8x magnifier over the larger 6x plastic framed glass magnifier of 2012 (don't like the all-plastic magnifier).
I need to take some more photos but here is a repeat...

That one is a First Production Run Becker BK-17 with the factory coating stripped and aftermarket handle scales. I own that one and a stock bk17. My stock one was one of the very last ones out of the factory. Their website said sold out, i called and they actually had one. It was when they were just recently discontinued for good.I love becker knives and especially the clip point models. They have a limited production bk19 out right now but im holding back. Thanks SG!
My wife is an artist (oil paintings) and Van Gough is her favorite artist. The background is one of the volumes of a six volume set containing Vincent's letters. Since she had them nearby when I went to take a photo, I borrowed one of the volumes for a background. I liked it and continued to use one of the volumes for other photos. I hope to get a group shot of my Explorers and Swiss Champs later this month. If nothing else, it will give me a chance to get an exact count of my Explorers. :)

If you can count them you don't have enough Explorers on the N+1 principle

Pretty funny!
I suppose that it is a bit like the old joke about the heavy smoker who replies to a friend who asks when he is going to give up smoking and he replies that he quits several times a day. :)
I have wondered why I keep getting more Explorers than I could possibly use...N+1 Principle is as likely explanation as any other.

The only n+1's that have gotten me are Spartans, Pioneers, Compacts, Climbers, Tourists and Soldiers.... and classics. :D
edit: ... and Huntsmans and Campers :D
Everything else is the rule of three for me. :D Is something wrong with me?

Tinker Deluxe. Nice, but the plyers are not great. I'd take LM PS 4 plyers over these any day of the week, but still a nice knife.
I left my Mountaineer (metal saw instead of plyers and corkscrew instead of Phillips head) at home today. Too bad, too. I like that one as well, but how many 4-layers do we need to carry around at once?

Are there wire cutters on the pliers?

Right. After the Chuck Yeager challenge I need layers. I might like 84mm but its time to break out my Compleat Fisherman.... *sighs blissfully at the thought*

I carry this modded Compact/Yeoman/Camper knife, so it is four-layer Friday for me most days:

Here's a four-layer customized SAK I carried for a while. I'll carry it today.
Love the carbon fiber scales and smaller form factor while having most of the tools that I need.

Next to my EDC - Yeoman/Compact/Camper mod.
I was surprised to see that the top knife (carbon fiber) is 3 ounces at 84mm, the bottom is 3.5 ounces at 91mm.

nice stuff, dudes! :tu: Had the Explorer + in the pocket this morning but then opted to go with the Farmer and Manager
I lose pens too often to edc them, hell, I even lose my glasses on a regular basis.... funny though, I haven't permanently lost a SAK in years. I use the pen on my SAKs very often. Just used the Manager last night at a sushi restaurant, so I didn't have to ask the manager for a pencil.

It is difficult to figure out this next mod as I'm trying to keep it to 4 layers, but be feature packed. I'm thinking about a Traveller with a wood saw added and other layers trimmed down which can be accomplished with a combo tool.
I'm still thinking because I'm trying to figure out how to get an inline Phillips, flashlight and magnifying lens all in there too. (Flashlight and Phillips are already in the Traveller.)

So I'm in the studio for a few days, pretty much living here. I was telling my producer /engineer about how cool the Explorer is and how useful it would be in the studio.
he began to write the name of the model down so he could find one on eBay. You know what happened. I gave him mine from my pocket. He was elated.

I've handed out a couple Tinkers, Spartans and Classics in the past. It really makes their day, like an unexpected Christmas. The magic here is that a pocket knife is considered something very personal that you carry close to your body in your pocket. It's something he'll talk about for a very long time. It's these kinds of things that build lifetime relationships on a personal level. You can see the joy in the photo. Well done!

Nice stayglow! How long with the stayglow last?
-
I have a stayglow Rambler that's been beat up on my keychain for over 10 years, and given a good charge, I can still spot it on my bedside table throughout the night with dark-adjusted eyes. I can't really tell that it has lost any glow-ability over the years.

Well that is pretty good I think. I would be happy with that type of longevity. Thanks!
-
Sure, any time. I should mention that the screened shield didn't last long on my keychain. The scales are worn completely smooth.

Nice EDC :tu:
-
Plus scales are a simple way to get a couple more nice features. Even tho most of us carry some kind of writing implement the no worry pen on a SAK just makes sense to me. The pin has come in handy more than I would have thought. I have hand sanitizer with me so "sterilizing" the pin to remove a splinter is not a problem. I also dont mind not having the hook << hides from the hook lovers >> :D
-
:iagree: the pen comes in very handy as I don’t carry a pen and the pin has helped me out plenty of times with splinters I do like the hook but would like to have one on the front tools so it folds out like a knife :tu:
-
@ Rapidray :hatsoff:. I like this pen, Pilot roller ball V7 in blue. I like blue ink and the thinness of this pen is nice. I also like a finer line so the V7 is a dream on the Moleskine paper. I use the notebook for my house notes, things to buy, projects, to do lists, and random things for the home. I also realized I need a pencil. The Cross I recently discovered and am really liking it a lot. The thin lead .7 isn't the best for hard writers but again I like a thin line.
-
I could have used a SAK with plus scales yesterday
-
Why is that BR
-
I also like the pen on my 58s. I dont mind carrying a pen and I do. My Maxpedition 3x5 note book is my work EDC. I have a Zebra F701 and Zebra M301along with a Sharpie dual tip. Having a pen however on my SAK IDK, just makes sense.
-
I always carry the 58 on my keychain very handy little SAK :like: :tu:
-
Me too. Manager is my perfect 58mm.
-
I carry the SD Classic :tu:
the tweezers and scissors get used a lot
just a shame it hasn’t got a pen instead of the toothpick
-
I was going to fill out a bank deposit form and was in my wife's car. Sure enough there wasn't a pen. I said to myself I sure wish I had the Minichamp or Swisschamp with me!

Yeah, but it's really not that hard. Some 32mm wide elastic and a couple of rows of stitches and it's good to go. I might get some 50mm elastic and give that a go as well, but the 32mm was all my local shop had in stock.

Crap. I never really bothered with the Explorer, because I have Climbers and Swiss Champs. Just for the hell of it I ordered an Explorer this week... and I think I love it. Everything the climber has, plus that magnifier and inline Phillips driver, but that extra layer doesn't make it awkward like I thought it would. It might be a lil big for just dropping in a jeans pocket, but with a dangler, which is almost mandatory for a SAK anyway, it's just fine. What do I tell my Climbers? :/
This makes today my first FLF.
I popped the scales off my stayglow Climber and swiched 'em like it was nothing. I'm a cad.

Nice looking stayglows!

I got mine because I liked the name and the layout. Once I had it, I found it to be a bit wider than what I expected. This Challenge has really changed my opinion. I love packing this knife, and really value the in line Philips. That Philips is the deal breaker between this knife and my Climber. I find that I use it and the mag glass more than anything else on it. I look at it now as a pocket friendly Swisschamp :D
-
Yeah, that extra layer is one hell of a layer. It's painful - I was building a collection of Climbers

Earlier this year I was modding a Yamaha TW200 to use all LED lighting and a couple other mods to conserve power for other gadgets I added to the bike. I found myself using this Deluxe Tinker more than any other tool to get the job done and was surprised how useful it is for doing lighter gauge wiring jobs. The scissors for trimming and stripping wire and having clean ends on electrical tape wraps and heat shrink. The pliers on this are perfect for that one handed holder for solder jobs and positioned right makes a decent heat sink if you put on a glove to hold it. The parcel hook is also great for reaching in, twisting, and pulling out a specific wire out of a bundle. I keep this on my electronics bench within reach now and it gets a lot of use.
Almost forgot... if you sharpen the inside part of the can opener, it works awesome for ringing a larger, heavier coax cable while keeping good control on the depth of the cut into the sheath.

This RangerGrip 58 Hunter has been more useful to me for cleaning fish. The blade shape is almost like a fillet knife and the gut hook on this is more useful for scrapin scales than as a gut hook. If your casting abilities are as good as mine, the saw blade comes in handy too. :P It's the perfect size for panfish and trout. (besides... this knife is a pain in the butt if you've ever had to clean fur and blood out of one!).

Pa Strunk, is that an Outrider or is that one of the German issued models? I don't think I've seen the one hand opening blade with a scissors before.

Well, they are just black Plus scales.... but since you asked nicely, here is a picture of the knife in its natural habitat.
What is the black tool next to the knife?

What is the black tool next to the knife?
Firefly ferro. Goes in toothpic slot, looks like tinder in the corkscrew?

That's the setup I'm wishing they'd build as a regular SAK. The Outrider I have is the older side lock model, not as compatible with the liner locks.

Sorry guys, just saw these comments. Yes that’s a firefly fire starter and kindling in the corkscrew. I actually put the firefly under the wood saw blade and use the other standard slots for toothpick and tweezers. They are hard to make out in pic, but I dyed the toothpick and tweezers black. Work better with green scales. This is my ideal SAK for camping. A great easy mod if you look close at base of blade is knife jimping on both sides of bolster. Just takes a few minutes with a dremel cutoff wheel. Really handy and improves grip dramatically.

An almost unbelievable story. On 16th of january I had an accident. On that occasion I lost my phone in the snow. Yesterday a coworker found my phone in the grassfield near our workplace (where once the pile of excess snow was, now just wet grass). He charged the phone and started it. IT WORKS!
So here is a picture of the rescued phone from the grassfield with the fieldmaster 😀

From the "Pocket Dump picture thread" in the "General Tool Discussion" forum:
🤣🤣🤣 no quite the opposite. I bought a box of 200+ little ducks from Amazon and when I'm put in the halls or at recess duty, I stash them around for kids to find to put a smile on their face. So I've always got a few in my pocket.
-
I hope the kids don't chock on them. They will put anything in their mouths. ;)

I too am glad to see this Friday thread revived. This is a Huntsman that showed up when I went on a spree to buy a few of these to gift to family members. I had arrived at the conclusion that this combination of tools met our needs. About a month later, other models became objects of lust …. er SAK-aholic addiction. I’m sure there is no one on this board fits that diagnosis. :dunno:

Now I'm glad that I built 4 layers. At first I wanted to install 3 layers without a metal file and the combo tool but the small nail file instead.

It appears you have a nice collection of vintage literature. They make excellent backing for your SAK’s.

It is raining with temps in the high 40's. Fahrenheit, of course. I couldn't do an outdoor photo, so I used whatever was handy. What is the tactical pen looking thing in your wife's kit, Jeff? Looks like she is well equipped. I'm going to have to get a little flashlight somewhere. Best wishes. G
-
Gary - High 40’s here too, but, clear. Rain Tomorrow.
It is a tactical pen with a glass breaker on the other end. When my best friend passed, his wife gave me his bug-out bag. This pen was inside. No idea where he got it. Here is a picture. Wife’s small light is an olight 1R2Pro. It is a “2 speed” rechargeable.
I have streamlight Defender LED and a Streamlight Nano.
Cute story (to me) about the Nano: where I used to work required us to carry a flashlight as an emergency egress light should the construction lighting in the ship fail. Between note pads, tape measures, ear muffs, gloves, hard hat, etc. I put the Nano on my lanyard next to my ID badge. Standard issue was a 2 or 3 d cell light. A few times I got “challenged” by either safety or some level of management about “where is your egress light?” Their first reaction to the Nano was “thats nfg” until they saw the light brightness. One even escorted me off the ship with the lit nano in his hand and learned about the run time. He then decided he needed information on where to get one.

Yes, I may have to check out the flashlights. By the way there is a flashlight carry badge available if you decide you would like one. I don't know why I said it was in the high 40F range here. It started out as just below 40F today and still isn't quite up to 40F. Ice accumulation for higher elevations in the county have been predicted. I liked the flashlight story. Best wishes. G
:tu:
-
I’ll look into the flashlight badge soon. I am a bit of a flash-a-holic, too. Ooops, clarifying the flashlight kind.
My next target is the 111mm level 1 badge. Having trouble sizing the photo so the forum will accept it.

This Tradesman is in need of a bit more TLC but all the tools are clean and snappy now.

Not too long ago I thought the Huntsman was the only SAK I would ever need. I started buying them and wound up with 6. One is in wife’s “ready bag”. Two are kept in other convenient places. These three are “spares”. Then I started diversifying.

Get out your tackle box and let's all try this tip. Pick the cleanest hook you can find. If you have to scrape worm guts off one, then look around a little more. Okay. All together, as I talk us all through this... Aaaah alllawa wawala gagaoah.... I just realized I couldn't talk with a fish hook on my tongue. Just look at the picture instead. Best wishes. G

Gary - things seem a bit fishy. Hope all is well.

There seems to be lots of putting a fly line in your mouth for one reason or another. This was just one. It is common for someone to put the knots in their mouth when you are tying them. The lube lets you cinch the knots down tight.
This might be about the last fishing photo that I use here. I started to post something with the page about how to tie a Bimini twist, but decided not to. There is no way anyone would ever learn that knot without watching someone tie it. Not really complicated, just impossible to describe. Best wishes. G

There aren't many problems a Hunstman won't solve. Nice picture!

Interesting technique….I’m not sure I would trust myself manipulating a hook poised on the tip of my tongue. Things might get painful pretty quickly.
I’m happy to report that my replacement yellow scales arrived, so I was able to replace the yellow front scale on my Explorer that got cracked a few weeks ago. I wasn’t able to post for Four-Layer Friday yesterday because we lost power during a storm here in a Houston.

I’ve also been carrying an Explorer around pretty consistently for a the last 10 days or so, after I gave up on the Deluxe Tinker (I never seem to need the pliers).
It’s a great model and the in-line 3D Phillips is sometimes the only thing that will do! I wish it were longer though. It’s too short to work on most door knob screws, for instance, because you can’t get past the knob - the thickness of the SAK isn’t doing it any favors there either. Even in the 90 degree configuration, it doesn’t work very well for that. Oh well, Rambler to the rescue in that case!

Had to open a box to get my dandelion caffeine free “coffee” powder. Not a very technical use, but, it is what was in my pocket.

Gary - Glad to see Spring has sprung for you.

Jeff, too bad there is no badge for cranking an ancient Echo weed wacker. That is what I am going to have to do shortly. I bought this thing in the late 1980's.
I think it gets better gas consumption than it did when it was new. When I bought it, I could fill it up and run out the whole tank of fuel before I got tired. Now I can fill it up and by the time I get tired I still have plenty of gas left. Maybe both of us can run one more summer.
Everybody be sure to get out a Spartan and show up for Spartan Saturday tomorrow. We will have cocoa and little donuts with white powdery sugar on them. Yumm. Best wishes. G

Found this Wenger Master Fisherman hiding in my pile though the scaler is a bit different than what is depicted in the Wiki.

Very nice!!! What model is this one? I have not seen that style driver before. :multi:

This one is a Wenger Waterfowler (https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Wenger+Waterfowler) that was sold exclusively by Cabela's. I picked it up in a knife lot auction. It's a shotgun choke tube tool that would be used to remove and attach choke tubes on shotguns. I don't own any choke tubes but I really liked the uniqueness of it.

Four Layer Friday time has come. Today it is a Huntsman. I bought two SAKs that were marked down at a Walmart a long weary time ago. A Spartan and a Huntsman. Both red cell, since that was the choice. Spartan cost about 8 bucks. Huntsman was 14, I think. Corkscrews with the ragged line on them. I put them both back in their boxes and they got swapped off for something or other. I didn't really like the red handles or the spear blades. I was probably carrying an Schlieper stock knife at the time, or maybe some other 3 blade. Could have been a Bear Paw or a Puma.
I didn't really like SAK knives then. I had a Pocket Pal in high school, but didn't carry it at all. I remember carrying a Case whittler at that time. Three blade millwork knife. This Huntsman is the second one I ever owned. Bought it last summer. Then I got a red one. For some reason.
Best wishes. G
