Title: World cup 2018
Post by: dks on June 17, 2018, 07:59:09 PM
Watching a few matches.

Peru and Mexico looked good.  Brazil playing now against the Swiss army knights.  :o

I am a fan of Inter Milan. I was hugely upset when Argentina dropped the Inter Milan/ Serie A top scorer Icardi, under Messi's pressure. I was greatly entertained when Iceland shut down Argentina yesterday in a 1-1 draw. Serve you right, Messi... couldn't sore a penalty kick against a film director

Surprised by the Swiss -  I think Serbia after the goal did not take the match that seriously.

Also surprised by the surnames of the Swiss team's members  :)

Switzerland is an immigration country... we have over 20% foreigners here and have a high naturalization rate
Athletes are most commonly recruited from the poor, they have more to gain, so they are more willing to risk their health*. In Switzerland the "poor" are the newly immigrated (before it was the Turks and before them the Italians that made up the Swiss football team). Btw, you cannot only observe that in football. Go to any pizza place that delivers (not restaurants) and you will realize that they are run by people immigrated from the Balkan, they have taken over the business from the Turkish immigrants who have taken it over from the Italian immigrants. In 20 years the Swiss team will be dominated by Immigrants from Nigeria/Senegal or whatever and the Pizza Express will not only serve pizza/kebab but also couscous...

Oh, and Switzerland is ranked #6 in the FIFA world ranking. A big part is due to the high investment into young/future football players. So, all of them learned playing in Switzerland.

* To clarify. Sport is a high risk, high reward career... chances to get a decent to great living is much better in an office job. Problem often is that immigrants have trouble with the language, which of course results in a poorer education, which limits their chances at a career. In addition sports requires a degree of aggressiveness, something that wealth, comfortable living, and working in an office dampens.

I love good upsets, and frankly want to see the big guys like Argentina and Germany eliminated. Germany would have been as good to pack up and go home, but they somehow managed that last minute goal by Toni Kroos. It was a beautiful goal though, and I do not discredit the German spirit. Sweden is almost certain eliminated. I can't see them win against Mexico and Germany not win against Korea.

Had a 2h train ride today so I did a bit of research (I only watch football during the World-/Europa- cup, so I don't know the players too well). Here is what I found out

Every single player on the Swiss national team was raised and trained in Switzerland. However, Croatia, Serbia and Albania (didn't check the other Balkan teams) have at least 1 player that was raised and trained in Switzerland. So, it is the other way round. Those teams are nothing but Switzerlands B-Selection 8)

Ok, I have to admit the Croatian B-Selection is playing pretty fantastic :P

I dont watch.  Living in SoCal with a very large Mexican population when Mexico wins I'm sure to hear about it.  Their fans go wild with each second of play.  Its pretty awesome how much passion is involved.  Me, not so much passion with regards to any sports.  I enjoy watching however I'm not someone who be giving high fives nor yelling at the top of my lungs or crying at a loss.  Its great to see that passion tho.

Rugby....almost a religion for some here.

I stopped playing when I was 15 when they put me in a team one age group up.....due to my size.

Neither myself or my new "team" wanted that,,,,thankfully.

Somebody my size no playing rugby was not very popular.

Occasionally I catch part of a game, might even get excited, but somewhere in that process I realise I'm looking at 30 grown men running after a ball.........

I do not get it

Soccer makes even less sense

I am seeing a lot of Brazilian flags this year, so I am assuming that Brazil is doing reasonably well.

It's times like this that I really miss living in Toronto- I don't think there is a nationality or ethnicity that isn't reflected there, and so Wold Cup time was always great.  You could tell who's team was doing well by how many flags you saw in the streets and on cars, and what teams were doing even better by who was hanging out of those cars screaming as they drove down the street!

I have to wonder if the energy in Europe is the same as the energy in Toronto, as you can't simply drive two blocks from your neighborhood to rub the other team's nose in it!

I hear it when... Serbia wins, when Croatia wins, Spain and Portugal are quite audible as well... Brazil surprisingly too, Germany is audible but at a rather low level... oh and for some reason there seem to be lots of Swedish fans around... and finally I hear if Switzerland wins.

I have to wonder if the energy in Europe is the same as the energy in Toronto, as you can't simply drive two blocks from your neighborhood to rub the other team's nose in it!
No need to drive...
That is pretty common in Switzerland, everybody is barbecuing... and if you really want to provoke your Brazilian neighbor just bring some German sausages.

I've been following NRL  (Aussie) rugby matches, when I can catch them on Fox Sports Soccer Plus here.  My fave team is the North Queensland Cowboys, followed by the St George-Illawarra Dragons.

It was kinda funny, cheering for the Cowboys when I've got the Dallas Cowboys here, then I discovered their mascot is a Bluey (blue heeler/ Australian cattle dog), and that made me a fan for sure.  That breed is my favorite, smartest, most loyal, even if I don't have one right now.

Funny game, as the loser stands to gain the "better" knockout games.  Two teams trying their hardest to lose with nothing to gain?
Only thing to gain is personal pride for the strikers going for the golden boot.

I prefer the Cowboys, have for a long time, even tho I live closer to Houston. I jokingly refer to the Texans as the "new Oilers," still a little bitter at the "old Oilers" packing up for Tennessee. I admire JJ Watt for everything he did to help folks out after Hurricane Harvey last year.  Him and "Mattress Mac" should be Houston's Citizens of the *Decade* for all they did.

Argentina could only ride on their luck for so long. Uruguay have a really good team with many well-known faces, while Ronaldo had to carry the whole Portugal team. The two Uruguay goals are beautiful. At the end of the day, the both results were just. If anything, I feel sorry for Ronaldo. He was born in a wrong country to have a realistic shot at the World Cup. Argentina and Germany have really expensive squads, but couldn't do jack. I hope Edinson Cavani's injury is nothing serious. This Uruguay team can go far.

Gotta say, I have really enjoyed this World Cup so far, there have been some really great games and performances. A few highlights for me up to this point:

Spain v Portugal 3-3 was a classic. Spain had a 20-minute period where they’d have blown any other team away, but Portugal hung on, backed themselves, played their own game and took on Spain head-on.

Columbia turning it on against Poland. Falcao razor sharp again after his terrible injury, James Rodriguez different gravy with his passing.

Croatia making a very talented Argentina side look very ordinary.

England keeping their heads for once when time was running out in the Tunisia game and kept on probing & passing, not just lumping it into the box.

Today’s matches not so good to watch, but interesting to see two limited sides in Russia and Denmark putting the squeeze on Spain and Croatia.

And the video reviews seem to be working pretty well.

The best game Portugal played. The second goal from Uruguay was awesome! I think Portugal deserved the chance to at least have an overtime. It was at least some satisfaction to see the powerful uruguay having 11 men defending against Portugal.

Greece 2004 yawn... not what we want to see...

Sadly, I sometimes get the feeling that those attacking teams do not really want to go for the goal, they seem to be more hoping for a corner or a foul resulting in a free-kick/penalty.

“Sadly, I sometimes get the feeling that those attacking teams do not really want to go for the goal, they seem to be more hoping for a corner or a foul resulting in a free-kick/penalty”

Yeah there’s something in that. I read an article on Spain after they lost to Russia the other day, ‘Sterile Possession’ it was called; Spain had a period of more than 40 minutes with overwhelming possession but not a single shot on target, which is remarkable. If a team have an attempt on goal but do not score, then possession goes back to the other side, I think Spain in particular have got too obsessed with possession at all costs, above everything else, even above trying to score a goal because they see it as a risk to losing the ball, however briefly?

Even in 2010 when they won, they did so with four consecutive 1-0 wins (I think) in the knockout stages. They won through dominating possession, not through blitzing the other teams with chance after chance.

Spain are / were the most extreme example of that approach - and they were supremely successful with it, totally dominant in 08, 10 and 12, but I wonder if this lack of adventure, reluctance to take a risk in order to score, has become a problem.
Title: Re: World cup 2018
Post by: Whoey on July 04, 2018, 07:19:13 PM
The "tiki taka" of Spain is not a bad thing, their failure was that it wasn't in movement as the past, only static passes and entirely too many minor ball corrections and that was their downfall since the opponents had loads of time to set up a defensive perimeter, preventing any chances of a clear shot. I honestly feel like this was coming anyways as Spain have always just scraped by with minimum goals, even when they won.

Firing the head coach who spent the last 2 years building the squad 2 days before the tournament started was also not the brightest of ideas.

That would be a shame.

Always sad to have a game decided by penalties.

I'd rather see the teams play on. No substitutions. Keep playing until a goal is scored or every player is passed out on the pitch. Let's put the "Death" into "Sudden Death Overtime".  :gimme:

I believe it mwas like that some time ago. You went into overtime. If after 30min there was still a tie, the next one to score a goal would win.

This would make the games more competitive and fair. Penalties are like a lottery...

Some brief remarks...

From the relatively few matches I've managed to watch, I'd say this isn't a terribly exciting World Cup.

However, no Italy nor Netherlands by default, no Germany, Spain, Portugal, Argentina later on, now that is noteworthy: this wasn't a good year for most usual suspects.

Morocco put up a good fight, they deserved better   :)

Iceland didn't live up to 2016 induced expectations  :-\

The belgians almost lost the game. Instead of keeping the ball and make the brasilians run after it, they kept loosing it, either by very long and failed passes or by running to the goal and kick as soon as they got close.

Courtouis showed once again he's one of the world's top goalies.

The Belgians lost the ball too much after their head start, but this just shows that we have a clean team!
No stalling, no acting.
Just playing the game as it should be and keep going for the opponent's goal.

Uruguay, I almost put money on them - god thing I don't like gambles

I would put my money on Uruguay as well. Unfortunately, without Edison Cavani, they were toothless.

Yes sorry I should not use lazy language.

Was just trying to say that to compare the French and Belgian teams, they are very close but maybe Belgium just have a little bit more. All over the pitch there are some real battles to be fought.

Can Varane and Umtiti cope with Lukaku’s pace, power & movement?
Can Alderweireld & Vertonghen deal with Mbappe’s pace, strength & finishing?

How about Pogba, Matuidi & Kante vs Dembele (the Belgian one), Hazard & De Bruyne?

Two of the very best goal keepers in Lloris vs Courtois.

What players are on the bench to come on and change the game? France have Dembele (the French one), Fekir, Belgium have Januzaj & Batshuayi.

Very close to call but should be a great game.

So the national teams of England are known as The three lions and gordi albion, Belgium as the Red devils, France as The Blues (and I remember calling 'em Tri-colors) and Croatia as The Blazers (Vatreni) which is a bit of a clumsy translation since literally it would be the ones made of fire

Interestingly our national handball team has the nickname Cowboys and water polo team has the nickname Barracudas

Oh yes, by all means I agree  :tu:

I meant to say not exciting in terms of pure football madness (full offense, long distance shots, creative passing game, stuff ike that). What we get instead is, I feel, mostly a heap of tactics were teams try to win that free kick, corner kick or penalty and get the opponents carded and miserable stuff like that.  :twak:

Hoping to see some good football even now at the end   :multi:

I'm afraid I cannot really make an in-depth comparison as I have pretty much lost touch with contemporary football these last ten years and rely on what I see to stay somewhat informed. Another reason for me to like these international tournaments.

I keep telling myself, whatever happens, it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter... but it does!!!  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

Yesterday's match didn't turn out to be the great game I was hoping for. Let's say that the best team won. Too bad for Belgium, I quite liked their style.

On tonight's front, things don't seem so good for the Croats so far. Poor Mandjukic is isolated waiting for a good ball.

Let's see what happens.

No, it isn't.
But I keep wondering what would have happened if the ref would have called that foal on Hazard within the 16m, which WAS a definite foal.

I also wonder what would have happened if the French would have played football that day.

3rd place isn’t bad at all, right?
No, it isn't.

Please, just get over it... The French were better  :pok:

(-_-)

I wil refrain from entering this rabbit hole...

Nobody could've watched that game and call it "a good game".

I can live with loosing, just not with injustice.

Out.

so here is the tally:
- apart from 10 minutes combined throughout the game the French squad were more akin to fussball figurines
- Croatia beat itself
- the most honest question one could ask is if the best team of this world cup finished second or third (oddly, I'd say third)
- some time ago there was a Croatian FB page about cussing the Danish refs regarding a handball game. wouldn't surprise me one bit if the same happened with those Argentinian refs
- I didn't get hit with a road flare
- I didn't hit anyone with a road flare
- managed to smurf off 3 husbands and one boyfriend. tights, skirts, booze and me apparently make for a combination similar to bulls and red whatever (oddly enough all the skirts and tights were red as well)
- I move that we start using something more noticeable than rings to avoid problems such as the ones I involuntarily caused

How Europe was cheering for the finals:

I understand that you support the French team, Aleph. It's your right to do so

However, the fact that Mbappe got messages from all over the world telling him how disgusted they were by his behaviour after the France - Belgium match, means something. Wheter France or it's supporters are willing to see it or not.

I'm not interested in a full scale brawl here, but stating that the French team played like a team of professional, sportive guys, is rather short turned.

And yes, I would have loved seeing the Belgian team 1 or 2 places up the list. Duh!

I would have loved to see the Dutch win in 1974. It didn´t happen, we ended second. We felt it was unfair, and some of us were traumatized even to this day. Don´t let it happen to you, Nick.

I watched the game in a local pub. The place doesn't usually open until 10:00 on Sundays, but they opened an hour early for the game. The place was packed!

I'd say there were 3 or 4 people cheering for Croatia for every France supporter in evidence. It was a fun atmosphere, although there was a lot of groaning.

In the second half, yes, but Croatia dominated the first half.
