Or a Huntsman with a mag/Phillips layer...
Nice one man!

That's us mobile
they should still make those to buy off the shelf
I'm in! I was going to join with the caveat that I modded mine from a SwissChamp, but you'd mentioned before that yours was also a mod :)

Mags, it just dawned on me that your Woodsman is just a fish scaler away from a Marly Outdoorsman.
That Woodsman has a great toolset!!! :tu:

Can I join with a modeler (woodsmans cousin)metal saw instead of woodsaw? It could be called the urban woodsman for this thread!Come on in- the water's lovely. Gotta do a pic though. Check out SAK Guys.always a great pic.
A lame attempt I know but there it is. :salute:

Hi SAK Guy
I was going to say this was not a Woodsman - As it was not old enough - Eg look at mine above. :)
However I checked the wiki and it looks like no tp/tw means it is a Woodsman.
It gets very confusing when Vic re-use names - eh !! ???

I'll post a pic when it arrives from Lowtech, it shouldn't be too long :salute:
Here are five of the seven that I have - all real, no mods. Not shown here are one from c. 1981 and a "left-handed" (i.e. scissors and phillips/mag layers switched) model from c. 1985.

I'm in ....Huntsman that top one is lush!
And I can join this club with two Vic Woodsmen.
Woodsman was the former name for the Huntsman - So this old beauty also qualifies me for this club I hope!!
As a lifelong Huntsman user and a recent convert to the mag/Phillips layer - The modern Woodsman is a great tool for me.
Definitely agree with Luna Knife that these should still be in production.
I think it would also be good with a metal file layer too. Not sure if that is an official model.
Picked this up last year off the bay - almost 'by accident' :D - for a very reasonable price - so was very chuffed
It also has the very nice Vic piccie on the handles, which I have seen around in a few places
But would really like to know the origin/meaning of the piccie - Can anyone help?
Huntsman that top one is lush!
Why is this model so rare? The only original ones so far are jazzbass' and Huntsmans and the rest are mods.
OK guys, I have two brand new Explores with woodsaw for sale. They are being sold in Mexico as Fathers' day specials, complete with pouch. I can post actual photos on friday. Until then this promo picture is going to have to do. https://www.facebook.com/VictorinoxMx/photos/a.10150116831410921.315966.169740300920/10153502114700921/?type=1
US$55.00 plus shipping each. I'll be in NYC next week so I can post them then from there. I guess shipping would be arround $6.00 but I'm not sure.
Who's interested?
I only have the Alox Woodsman

Ihave a limited 50 pieces orange woodman.
The only thing that denotes this a a spacial run is the model number in the cardboard box: 1.6713P15.
This SAK was made to celebrate Father's Day in Mexico. They did a special BO main blade Hunstsman last year. I don't know if they did something special before that. I'll find out.
Nice one John - Love these comparison pictures - And the old, well used, and appreciated SAKs !! :tu:
Thanks for posting
And welcome to the forum - Please stick around - Sounds like you'll fit in well :D
I have another couple of differences for you!!Then regarding the mag glass
- One potential difference - Can't quite tell from the photee ??? - But on the older one do you have the 'fluted' corscrew? - ie with the small groove going all round the corkscrew - Quite likely with the eyeless awl!
- This one is really subtle - The blade thinkness changed in 2005 I believe from 2.4mm to 2mm - So I think that difference will be there.
- Also the tang stamps will be different on the main blade.
- Oh just thought of another one - The Phillips on the new one will be shorter to accommodate the new mag glass !!
- If you bought the new one in the last couple of years - Which I assume you did - Is this one from Mexico too?
It will be the V3 mag glass with a glass lens not the old plastic one piece
- It's hard to tell the difference - But you could try pinching the lens hard and try and rotate it in the frame, if it moves you have the glass one !
Hope that helps - rather than coming across as anal and picky!! :o Tool varaiations is my SAK hobby!! :tu:

One more difference:
The scissors were held together with a screw on the older SAK, a rivet on the newer one.
I'll post pics after work :D:tu:
Oooops, here's a club I missed. :-[ Long time fan and owner though.

Like Mags I had to make my own but it's well worth it.
I'm lucky enough to have 3 , and still always looking for more, if I could only have 1 SAK hands down this would be it. It's the perfect combination to me and wish it would be in production again. Once I awhile you find them on Ebay.

Great posts John :salute: The Woodsman continues to be a popular model so I'm wondering why it's been discontinued. I haven't been openly EDC'ing mine since xmas as my wife and daughter bought me a Huntsman. I really miss the mag glass and philips so I've secretly been pocket carrying the Greenwood so I don't appear ungrateful. It's still my favourite SAK

I put together three more. I put new Plus scales on one because I wanted to use an old pen as a needle case. The pen no longer wrote so I thought it was empty...turns out there was still enough ink inside to make a big mess when I cut the nib off ::)
Nice collection Boo-Nizzle :salute:

Well that settles it, my 1st mod will be adding an inline awl to "something".....it's your fault. 😜
Barry.....woodsaw or metal saw (Modeler) doesn't add hardly any thickness to the Explorer, even though it adds a layer.
Well I just joined the club! Waiting for mine to arrive....I can hardly wait!! :ahhh :ahhh :mail::climber:

- Magnifier: Old one has gray frame around the magnifier lens (nylon ??), and the new one is clear, presumably a one-piece now.

No, I think the new one is a glass lens (which can actually be pushed out from one side if you push hard enough, with a plastic holder

That is correct. There are three versions of the magnifier (from the Sakwiki):
v1 had the gray frame with 8x glass lens circa 1973
v2 has clear frame with 5x plastic lens circa 2004, but existing v1 stock was being used as late as 2006
v3 has clear frame with 6x glass lens circa 2012, and I can attest that it can be popped out

I'm dreaming up a little something....Basically Compact Woodsman...I think Jaya built one called a Yeoman WS?..
Awl instead of hook on the scissors layer though.
Is there something like a Champion minus scaler? AKA Woodsman add metal file/Ranger add phillips&mag? Is there a Marlboro one like that?
In any case... I 'need' a Woodsman now, :assimilate: off to the web...

Exchange the wood saw blade for a file with hacksaw edge and you have a Modeler, also long discontinued and considered rather rare, but not impossible to find. Takes patience. I also wish there was a six layer - the Woodsman plus the Modeler file (or Modeler plus the Woodsman wood saw).
Great thread  Love all the pics in here :tu:So MTo ponch! Perfect but I would add this and remove this - I love it! I thought mine was perfect, then I did the in-line awl, now I'm thinking, 'but it's got 2 awls! Who needs 2 awls (apart from firiki)? It's a never ending quest!
Mags do you happen to have a fanned pic of the Greenwood  I think that it is almost as close to a perect SAK as I would find :dd: I might add one more tool and perhaps take away the opener layer unless I could add a pruner or electrician blade in place of the can opener :tu:

I'm beginning to think an XLT with scaler removed would be my ideal SAK. But then again I don't like some of the back tools - chisel for example.

I have these two items~~
It came today and I love it!!:like:
Awesome snags , Boonie Max 8) 8)
I got this one in the other day........ :2tu:
The Nature Store LE black scales w/ Rabbit inlay 8)
:mail: A couple of older Woodsmen yesterday, both are before they added the magnifier and inline Philips. The 1st is from the early 70's I believe and is brand new in the box. Clip small blade and 5 loop, grooved corkscrew. No T&T or keyring. Number on box is 1. 37 10. I could not find this is SAKWiki but the Huntsman is 1. 37 13. Anybody have a reference that shows this number?? Knife also has an interesting blade etch.
2nd is post '85 and has the Ecoline shield I think. Also a nice knife. No T&T but this one has a key ring.
Added to the collection........😛

Nice very vintage find on the first one!
I'm wondering about dating the second one which has no fluting on the corkscrew and an eye in the awl. The eye was added in 1985, but the fluted corkscrew continued into the early 1990's. The imprint on the ecoline scales is consistent with the early 1990's as well and they're prior to the introduction of nylon in 1994. I'd date it as a 1991-1994 Huntsman as the pre-magnifier/Phillips layer "Woodsman" was before the 1985 sewing eye according to SAKWiki. Was bouncing between the SAKWiki and sakhome.com looking at the back layer tools and scales. The initial "tell" for me was the non-fluted corkscrew, followed by the sewing eye.
They both look to be in great condition for their age.

You might be right on the 2nd one, it is a bit of a jumble. I was going by the listing and because it had no T&T and normally the Huntsman would. Maybe that has something to do with the Ecoline? The '91-'94 might be a problem because there also is no hook. Ecoline again? I don't know enough about the Ecoline models.
In any event, it is going in with the Woodsman/Huntsman group and will eventually sort itself out.
Woodsman's brother - Modeler.
Now I'm wondering if my Huntsman is actually an old pre-Mag Woodsman(?). My Dad got it for me in the fall of '83, with the grooved corkscrew and the pre-eye awl. There are no other tools on the backside except the awl and the corkscrew. I hate to admit it, but I was so excited to have a SAK that I didn't even pay attention to what the box said!

Another pic. If anyone wants some American Walnut for scales pm me. I have a bit!!
Same with this one John. It was just a fraction of a millimeter but enough that you could detect it with a light. I'll apply Operation Vice to it and we'll be in good shape.
I haven't John, but I'll jump on Youtube. I have to make a trip to the hardware store and get some foam pads. Thanks for the heads up sir!
I'd like to eventually buy a more modern Woodsman, but until then I have this approximately 1961 (thereabouts) version:That's gorgeous - I love the old style bail with cellidor scales and wish Vic had continued them.

For actual camping in the woods, Explorer is lacking a saw. Ranger on the other hand is great, but if it's post 2005 the file is no good for fingernails, and I'm not sure if I'd ever use a metal file "in the bush" (I can think of uses, but haven't used it so far). Woodsman provides a means to start emergency fires from sunlight as well as to inspect bugs. And the IL phillips is handy for bicycle derailleurs and certain camping equipment, like the screw that holds on the arms to my MSR Superfly stove. So Woodsman might end up being a great camping SAK. If only it had a LNF on back.....
By the way, Magentus, I've seen your green one (or was it another green one?) In pics before and it looked like there was a mysterious liquid behind the scales...wondering what that is...emergency water rations? I mean I know on a boat everything is gonna get wet...

The bubbles are floatation aids - don't want to lose my Greenwood to Poseidon. OR they could be bubbles in the glue I used to fix the scales on solidly. Can't remember. :D
Here's some company for yours Bazzer:

Woodsman day today. Coupled with the Spirit, ratchet and spanner I have all bases covered. Unless I have to help deliver a baby. But I'll deal with that if it happens.

Mags, those pics are awesome!!!Thanks Bazman! It's all down to the model :D
Nice pics of the English country side Mags - Homesick again :(Flotation aids my friend. :D
However - Pic 2 - Are those scales full of water/bubbles or something ???
Aren't they awesome birds Mags? Great pics sir! I shot this pic with my hikers, probably the most comfortable boots I own. The Woodsman really means outdoor walks to me!They are Bazzer :salute: Cool boots and I love the scales on that Sweet sweet Woodsman.
Is that a railroad tunnel Mags? It's a tunnel under a railway Bazzer - we had the railway about twenty feet above us on the left and the river (Avon) a few feet below us on the right. Great seeing the trains going past every half hour.
Can someone confirm what the thickness of a Woodsman is?
I'm trying to decide if l can EDC a 5 layer SAK.
Cheers
George
Fantastic mod Mr O'Brien! Particularly good considering your ahem, 'diminished circumstances'.One of those graptolite fellows.
Did you find anybrainsfossils? :D
Finally got around to rescaling a factory Woodsman I picked up a while back. Now I need to get out to the woods more often! Noticed that most of them have the small driver on the back, but this one has a chisel, complete with liner cutout, and I'm sure it's not a mod. Is this odd or did they come both ways? Should be good for whittling and other woodsy type stuff anyway. All the tools indicate mid to late 90's production. :salute:I like the chisel and round eye glasses driver.
My bladeless version is still being EDC'd. :)Heehee, you said backside.
Since the only back tool on it at the moment is a corkscrew, I'm planning on adding the hook to the scissors which are at the opposite side of the SAK, as compared to the corkscrew layer. It should balance the aesthetics of the backside nicely.

My backside is fine, hows yours now?? >:D(http://forums.eog.com/images/smilies/whip.gif)Prosthetically balanced thankyou for asking. :D
If you had used a few staples, you wouldn't have lost it and then you wouldn't have had to get a prosthetic backside. :facepalm:My backside is fine, hows yours now?? >:D(http://forums.eog.com/images/smilies/whip.gif)Prosthetically balanced thankyou for asking. :D
Lost it? It was stolen from me. It was so beautiful. I was out for a drink with some nice people I'd never met before. Let me serve as a lesson to everyone out there with an aesthetically balance backside. Look after it, and in the words of the great Ronnie James Dio, Don't Talk To Strangers.

Noticed anyone who's backside is suddenly much nicer?
Another nice old 91mm Woodsman from the 60's joins the family. Pre-magnifier/Phillips and all that good stuff......
Top two (both 84mm and 91mm) are from the 40's/50's, next two from the 60's, next two from the 70's and the bottom (91mm only) from the 80's with the magnifier/Phillips.
Saw and mag would be pretty small. :D
Yep, tough to keep the campfire going with that saw, but that's logic and just doesn't apply.....
I really like the idea....An awesome saw to use on toothpicks. :o :D
I think it would win the 'cutest SAK' prize :tu:Yep, tough to keep the campfire going with that saw, but that's logic and just doesn't apply.....
Yup ;) :o
The saw would have about three teeth
I guess they'd have to make them smalller

What a beauty Twiliter!! Mine takes me out in the woods, too, if only in my mind at times.

Still the basic platform is there to work with. Old gray mag frame can't be beat. I think the only thing missing to make a Woodsman near perfect is the chisel.I agree with you on the grey mag Baz - I have an old Explorer that I'm going to nick parts for to 'upgrade' my modern Swisschamp. I'm replacing the thinner tang blade with the thicker tang, the mag and philips and will be adding a couple of extras to make it a Swiss SuperChamp. Watch this space..........
No place to put the chisel, the way I I've done it now. :rofl:My bladeless version is still being EDC'd. :)

The only thing is... Is it still a bladeless woodsman derivative, what with everything I've taken off (blades and openers)?
Or something else entirely?

Sadly, especially the magnifying glass :cheers: Lovely pics of a lovely SAK Barry! I know what you mean about the magnifier. Now when people shout out 'Oi Four Eyes!' at me in the street, I smugly get Greenwood out and say 'I think you'll find it's five'. That shows 'em. :D

The Mini Pabsman, still my favorite. :)
The cornerstone of my trifecta combo.
Still undecided if it belongs to the woodsman family. :ahhh

Sometimes I question my decision to leave off the opener layer... but I'm sure that my decision will be justified when I get a pioneer or my BY SAK. :dd:

Is your river going over its banks?
Lol - no. This is on Minchinhampton and Rodborough Common - there are many dips and ridges due to remains of earthworks thought to be part of an Iron Age settlement of the Belgic Dobunni tribe. Last week it was still covered by snow - this week it's all melted away and I took the pic at a little pond formed in a small dip.

I can see the River Liffy from where I am sitting. Due to its flow being controlled by a dam, it goes up and down like it has tides, depending on how much water they're releasing.
Sometimes it goes rather high and turns large areas of grass into a pond for much of its length.
Nice! Bet that 's an interesting view to see every day, season by season. Pics? You're in luck.
Last time I saw the Liffy was in 1999 and they had a submerged digital clock counting down to the Millenium.
Thanks Pabs :salute: Does it ever rise enough to be a worry for you? I'm guessing as it's dammed they would have thought about local residentsNice! Bet that 's an interesting view to see every day, season by season. Pics? You're in luck.

Yesterday was a "fairly common" significant rise.
Sometimes it goes up another 15cm or so, but because of the land elevations, that covers a LOT more ground. :o

Don’t forget to plonk that bouncing thing back into the bomb bay. ;)Don't worry, it's on a bungee.

As with the U Boat crew, the Lancaster crew don't like to actually blow anything important up. We've just got all this ordnance lying around and it seems a shame to waste it.Such foresight! :oDon’t forget to plonk that bouncing thing back into the bomb bay. ;)Don't worry, it's on a bungee.

Fascinating. :oLast time I saw the Liffy was in 1999 and they had a submerged digital clock counting down to the Millenium.
The infamous 'Time in the Slime'
Did you hear the story of that?
It was installed under the waters of the Liffey just by O'Connell Bridge in early 1999 - and as you say the idea was as a countdown to the Millennium
However the clock got compleletly covered in algae after a few days - So the council had to employ scuba divers to frequently clean it.
It all got so expensive that they canned the project, and took it away before we even got to the Millennium !! :o
- Well that's the story I heard ;)
Whilst we're on Dublin - Don't you love the way Dubliners have irreverent rhyming nicknames for all their famous landmarks:I am sure there are one or two more - Enlighten us Pabs
- The Time in the Slime
- The Tart with a Cart
- The Stiffy by the Liffey
And whilst I'm on my nostalgic trip down memory lane in Dublin ....
What is the very unusual feature regarding O'Connell Bridge? - Possibly unique in the world.
Clue: It's a physical feature of the bridge, but not to do with its construction method - Pabs you're not allowed to answer
PS. Thank goodness we're allowed to digress in our threads at MTo. Otherwise I'd have to delete my post.
I finally got my Woodsman together and can join the club! No hook, fluted corkscrew, scissors with screw, and totally untrue-to-history Camping scales. But I plan to primarily use it for camping, so seemed appropriate. Just finished modding it yesterday and already love it!
:woohoo:. I think you have me out layered my friend!!
Mags, it's been awhile. I'm going to carry mine tomorrow for Multilayer Monday. You in?In like Flynn Bazzer
This one started its life as an Explorer but I had a saw layer that needed to be put to use

Figured I would post this one. I almost bought an earlier made one while up in Atlanta but he was wanting $140 for it. So I bought 3 other SAK’s from him.Nice one RR!
Looks great sir!Thank you! :hatsoff:
Looking great Ray!!Still loving this one!
Thanks M - It is certainly one of my favourites in my wee collection!!
I came across it almost by accident on the bay, it was local to Oz - so no massive postage costs and was a great price.
One of those ebay purchases that makes up for all the crazy ones I have done :o
When it arrived it was in excellent condition, just a tiny, tiny dent on the mb which I hammered out a little, it's not really noticeable now.
I dated mine between 92 (Hook, scissors w rivet) and 04 Old mag glass
- But not sure when they stopped making this model - so could be older
Fraid my dating is not as accurate as JBs
I love the logo on the scales
I have used it a bit - But it's tempting not to - to keep it in its pristine condition.
PS. Wow - Just seen Ebareena's post whilst writing this - That sounds like a good deal to me!! Even personal delivery!!
That is nice! Welcome to the club.
That top one is so cool Huntsman!
I guess i should post a photo of this modeler/woodsman hybrid
Plus it's great to see this thread active Ray :tu:It is one of my top two favorites! :salute:
:like: :tu: :tu::iagree:
Woodsman...my second favorite SAK! Has everything I need on a daily basis.
Here's an older model from my collection. I really love it when I can find them with their original box. I think this one would fall somewhere from '83-'85That is definitely a great looking Woodsman! And the original box, even better :like:
I have been on the search for one of these models for a long time now. Seems like some of the best combinations are on the knives that are hardest to find so if I got my hands on one I'd be afraid of using it. That's a nice one, Rapidray!Thank you...I will be up in Georgia in a couple of months and may be coming home with another Woodsman.
Very nice!!This one, will always be my favorite!
Thank you...I will be up in Georgia in a couple of months and may be coming home with another Woodsman.

Mags, do you still have yours?I do Barry - currently doing car duty in the gl8vrbox of the Mags mobile :salute:
I think I remember you previously talking about the store in Georgia. It sounds like a sweet spot for finding some nice SAKs. Good luck. That would be the store! Factory, custom or whatever, he will probably have it. :tu:

I imagine it is a very fun visit, but requires some restraint or it could be like a kid in a candy store, but even more costly.Oh yes...he only deals in checks and cash...no debit or credit cards. I can’t tell you how many times I have had to run down the street two blocks and hit the ATM!
Nice Woodsman.

The Mighty GreenwoodSweet :like:
Had a chance to pick up all 3 of these NIB with their sheaths for an excellent price this winter and since I am a Woodsman fan it seemed like destiny. From South Korea of all places. One to the collection and two to future Boy Scouts. :cheers:When it rains, it pours! I see two happy Scouts in the near future! :tu:
Bought this thinking it was an explorer. Colour me surprised! Cost next to nothing and was a bit rough round the edges but cleaned up real nice. New plus scales but kept it trad red.Mistaken items (anything) can be a great surprise and bring a smile to ones face :iagree:
I don't need to tell any of you what a slippery slope it is, do I?
Hello, All!
New member and first post. ........
I've got lots of questions about maintenance, restoration, mods, and such, but I'll search the forum first before badgering you all with them. If I can't find answers, you'll be hearing from me. And, assuming the Woodsman collection does develop (my wife might have some opinions I'll need to listen to), I'll post the progress. In fact, I have a couple of knives headed my way already which may be the start. :D
My first SAK. Love the Woodsman... turns one of the best EDCs into one of the best outdoors/camping SAKs.Nice pics. The Woodsman is such a great knife.

Sometimes I wonder why it isn't available anymore.
It certainly is! I actually purchased a new in box Woodsman destined for the Mexican market from a seller on the Bay a couple years ago. He's located in Quebec if I remember right.
That's a gorgeous one you have!
Not carried my Woodsman in ages and decided to put it in my pocket last night.

I've had both over the years Steve. For the money, you can't go wrong with the Outdoorsman. I actually thought it was built better than the Mexican edition Woodsman that I had at the same time."Mexican edition Woodsman"? What was that? Made in Mexico?

There's something billed as a "Victorinox 130th Anniversary Edition 'Woodsman'" with a big anniversary logo on the back scale on eBay now. For more than I care to spend on what would be a collectible, not a daily user. But I'm curious to see what it does eventually sell for.
Not carried my Woodsman in ages and decided to put it in my pocket last night.Gareth - The green is beautiful and never more fitting than on the Woodsman. I swapped out the red for green a wee while ago myself. Still not as eye wateringly pretty as Mags MGW but very elegant in its own right.
That's a beautiful knife Jud!:hatsoff: :iagree: one of my favourites.
Vic made it specifically for the Mexican market, and it was pricey. I picked up mine from a seller in Montreal. There's pics of it in the Woodsman's Owners Club thread. It was a nice knife, but the Outdoorsman is so close to it. Magentus made a beautiful custom Woodsman, and there's probably more modded Champs, etc. that are now Woodman than there are Woodsman knives. I picked up an old gray mag Explorer in the hopes of finding someone to mod it to the Woodsman, but no luck yet. Thanks, Barry. I just finished reading through all 17 pages of this thread. A lot of really nice Woodsmen out there. I kind of feel like a party crasher coming in here with an Outdoorsman. :(
Picked up a gently used Woodsman not long ago.

I'm not sure which club this SAK belongs in. It started as a Handyman, but I replaced the pliers with a magnifying glass/Philips layer. So it could be called a Woodsman with a metal file!
I'm a big Explorer fan and really liked the idea of adding a wood saw. After searching for months without luck for a Woodsman, I got what I thought was the next best thing - a Marlboro Unlimited Outdoorsman. I don't mind the fish scaler at all because of the useful rulers on it.Here's the completed Outdoorsman with brand new yellow Plus scales. And my first yellow SAK too!
It was pretty dirty when I got it so I was a little concerned. But some deep cleaning and lots of oil, and it's looking good now. I pulled the Marlboro scales off it and am waiting for some new Plus scales to arrive. I'll post a photo when it's done.
I like that Steve!! :tu: :tu::iagree:

Bump! I'm back again, this time for good :D. Just got this Woodsman from SOS24. It's great to be a Woodsman owner again!
Found this older thread and thought I'd give it a bump ........
