Given the members of the club so far could we amend the thread title to 'The Vic Deranged' club? :pok:

WAIT! I forgot the blue one!!!!!!!
So it's 15.
The good news is.......you can always get another case.......happy hunting. 😛
I can't help myself....it's like the movie Conspiracy Therory, when Mel Gibson saw a copy of a Catcher in the Rye, he bought it.
Whenever a nice Ranger in $19 - $25 range shipped pops up......

For the moment mine is a Lone Ranger as well ;) but it may not be for long  :D
From the top the Ranger is just a Mountaineer + wood saw.
But underneath it has two extra tools, the long thin screwdriver and a tiny chisel.
I wonder why the Mountaineer has a blank space where one of these extras would fit. The chisel is kind of useless, but the long screwdriver is great, as anyone who has tried to wire a light socket will know.

Sad to say, I still haven't found a convincing reason to buy a Ranger. The pliers on the Craftsman may be tiny but they're jolly useful.
I think it's because Vic wants you to buy several and have to decide which you like! :D If they made the one perfect SAK, sales numbers would suffer. On the flip side, having RA, I can live without all the extra backside stuff and those long uninterrupted springs on the back translate into strength and confidence, at least to me. The only broken Vic back spring I've seen in 45 years was on one of those backside tool springs. Another reason I like older Ranger/Master Craftsman models with less back side tools if I have a choice. Weird, nonsensical? Yes, yes. :DAnd no fun doing mods

Had couple as a kid. Was my favorite though i did not like the "camping" engraving in it. But it has the perfect tools i think. Would have bought it again instead of the Harvester if they had an Alox version

Thanks, but an internet shot. Only character knife I ever owned was a Raiders of the Lost Ark. While looking at it I popped the scissors spring out. An hour later, after the expenditure of a fair amount of blood, sweat and profanity, I threw the #$%^& in the trash.
On the subject of the 'William Tell Overture', check out the overture to 'Donna Diana', by von Reznicek. It was the theme music for 'Sgt Preston of the Northwest Mounted Police'.

Got this Ranger in this week.
Company A of the Rangers (Arizona) has also grown to two in number, although I must admit that I expected a nice Mountaineer with camping scales in the mail. Photos didn't show the woodsaw or the number of layers so I "assumed". Not whining though, nice price and beautiful condition. It's older than my current one, probably somewhere between 85-91. No hook and only 3 back tools. It's good to see the "strength" of the Rangers growing.

Always glad to see them!!! I've had to straighten a few of those as well but the most often screwed up tool on all my ebay bought knives is the corkscrew. Have no idea how the idiots can screw that up so often. If you're not smart enough to use one correctly....you're probably too dumb to own a sharp object like a knife.

I'm just watching a documentary on BBC4 about the history of the Dada art movement. At one point in the programme, there was a series of Dada-style cut-and-paste montages representing the places where the movement started, and the Switzerland one included an animated Swiss Army Knife. It was a Ranger!

I will be gone the first week of next month but I will try and keep it going the rest of the month as I will watch the 2 layer challenge but not participate  :D
I do like the Ranger, particularly it's tool density. I do have one, but I don't carry it. If I feel like carrying that style toolset, I carry my Original Outdoorsman instead. It doesn't have all the backspring tools, but I like the fact it switches the two blades for a serrated main blade and pruner blade. The Ranger I have got will be sacrificed to build the Mega91 at some point.
Just joined the club.
"Nacho" has the latest version of the tools and arrived in great condition.
The cross and camping logo are both the screened variety.
Though given my food choice this should have the "CRAPPING" logo.
Hey all. I'm joining the club too. Just one problem: it's so nice that I'm afraid to use it!
So.. I just bought another used one on Ebay.

  I'm a big Space nut so the Master Craftsman is one of my main areas of interest. I almost never carry one. Carrying this one today because a buddy sent it to me this week (along with a bunch of other goodies). The Ranger is cheaper and is everything I really want in a 5 Layer SAK that I can use without worry. :D

Am actually am thinking of doing a ranger with minimum back tools (corkscrew/phillips and awl) and replacing small blade with the inline awl... and probably adding an inline phillips as well...

I love me some outer space too. I've been eyeing the slightly more modern (pliers-having) NASA Craftsmans for sale from Japanese sellers. But wouldn't be able to take it out of the house if I spent that much on it.
Thinking about getting a small pliers MT that has a good phillips driver to team up with my Ranger. Kind of silly backing up a Ranger with a SwissChamp.
I do have a Matterhorn, but would prefer an inline phillips that can take a lot of torque. So maybe some kind of :multi:

  I'm a big Space nut so the Master Craftsman is one of my main areas of interest. I almost never carry one. Carrying this one today because a buddy sent it to me this week (along with a bunch of other goodies). The Ranger is cheaper and is everything I really want in a 5 Layer SAK that I can use without worry. :D

Here's a "Ranger" for ya....the scale actually came off a beat up spartan (back scale is from old Huntsman, both economy style) and is going on to a good condition Tinker and will be buffed out. Thought about saving this for an actual Ranger model but...already have a good 2005 or newer Camping Ranger in my lineup.

Is that a re-issue?
Yes, as I understand it since 2015 Victorinox has issued a version (model: 1.4763.SS) of the Master Craftsman (with the inlaid shuttle scales) only available in the Japanese market (I purchased mine through Amazon Japan). Unlike the orginal version it has the hook and wood chisel. I don't know if this issue is just a temporary one, or will be on-going. I only ordered it on 15th Dec, but it was delivered on 19th Dec (to the UK)!

Thanks, very tempting!
My son just joined the club! I was pleasantly surprised at how sweet a knife the Ranger is. The lack of pliers really takes the heft from it. It really is a pocket friendly Craftsman!
Poncho, how does it compare carry wise with the Champion? I had my Craftsman out and compared the two, and the Ranger really does carry well :D
Here are some shots of my brand new Ranger. Just got this in the mail earlier this week, and have been in love with it since then. This is probably one of the coolest Swiss army knives I've seen. Go Ranger!!!! :like: :mail:
I didn't know this was a Ranger, but happily just found out it is! It's the older one without hook and chisel.

Love that model Ponch...always glad to see it....maybe I can dig one out for tomorrow.
Found a beat up one (actually two) in the pile... :tu:
The Ranger is an example of a SAK with a great assortment of tools that I really like and admire but don't use. Why not?
I think some of the lyrics of an old Elvis Presley song explains my feelings: "Her hair is soft and her eyes are Oh so blue / she's all the things a girl should be but she's not you"
I have become so attached to the Explorer and its set of tools that it has become my go-to for EDC. I frequently carry a secondary SAK such as the CT-29 but the Explorer is the SAK that I use most often. As much as I like the Ranger, I don't want to give up the inline Philips and magnifier.
This hasn't stopped me from enjoying my ownership of the Ranger. In fact, it would have been a perfect companion for my many motorcycle camping trips (rode for 35 plus years). These days, it has an honored place among my other SAKs.

Expedition? I hadn't heard of it but checked on SAKWiki and another site and found Expedition Lite. It had an LED light instead of a magnifier. I would definitely get an Expedition if it had the magnifier. Swapping the small blade for an awl would be wonderful!
Even though we all have our favorite SAKs, it is amazing how many SAKs we have in common. For example, I look at the Swiss Champ Sunday thread and there are the usual suspects (including me).
Thanks guys for sharing!

That's why I called it the Expedition... same tool config except for the lite and electronic scales...
Nice one NCJ 8) :like: :like:

So is the Expedition a mod? SAKWiki doesn't list it and neither does the Smartknives site.

Did you say you are selling Some of your collection SG?
If you think 15 Rangers is something dont even ask SG about his SwissChamps or Farmers.
I am not a betting man but if I was I would bet that SG has more than 15 now  :D

I accidentally got a Ranger off Ebay... I was certain I would be outbid but it never happened.
I'm not over the moon about it, cos I prefer my Craftsman and Mountaineer. It'll probably go on ebay again... I find it very hard to get excited about anything in red plastic scales these days.
Cheers SAK guy!
But let's face it - Victorinox hasn't made many knives you didn't like!

I didn't mind removing the green scales from another knife I had because the guy said he had put them on there himself, so I felt as though I didn't disturb an original knife in removing them for the Ranger.

I think I have two Rangers now.
This first one I was sent as a freebie from a seller on eBay who I bought quite a few SAKs from. The original scales were rough, so I swapped out these green ones from another SAK I have.

I sold a Ranger then bought a Ranger the same day.
I had some spare black scales, so I put them on my Ranger, kept my green scales and will now put the green ones on the new-to-me one.
I suppose the best part of the story is someone else got a Ranger.

I love brick hammers and all the related hammers and tools :dd:
I have a rock pick as well as several different sized brick hammers (both Estwing and several other brands) This particular one is a 24 oz. brick/block/rock hammer that has a carbide tip inserted into the chisel end that was put in with silver solder  My dad gave me this hammer brand new when I stared full time laying brick after high school :tu: That would make it almost 18 years old :tu:

Call this Ranger yellow and you wouldn't live to regret it.
Captain Frank Hamer
Yeah, he wasn't yellow, not one bit! BTW, my FIL has a Remington Mod 8 in .35 Remington like the one Hamer used on B&C. Minus the 20 rd extended mag of course. :D

Nice!
While digging up that photo came across another of a Colt Monitor (semiauto BAR) owned by Hamer that's in the Texas Ranger Museum.
Definately a strong believer in firepower. Given his career you can understand why.
Did some more digging. The Monitor was a BAR with a pistol grip and shortened barrel. Some sources say it was full auto; others that it was semi auto only. May have depended on the agency buying it.

That Monitor of Hamer's is probably the most famous one in existence. A few years back, I had the pleasure of cracking a magazine full off from an original BAR at a WWII event. An old friend, long gone, was a BAR gunner in the Army and loved it (except lugging it!).
Great pic CS....I love working pics! When I was a boy I used to help an old family friend in his masonry business. Hard work but an honest day's work!

Cool!!!! I've only heard a few on old radio channels on iTunes. A funny story. My mom, whose 87, used to know a kid that when he got into trouble, his mom spanked him to the William Tell Overture on the phonograph. I guess so she could keep time. I bet that kid hated the Lone Ranger. :D

Have a Monster time with your Ranger then. Ah one of my favourite movie lines ...
[distant howling]
-Werewolf !
-Werewolf ?
-There
-What?
-There wolf. There castle " ....
I'll get my coat
Before I came down with a bad case of "Gotta have a magnifier", I bought a Ranger because of its great assortment of tools. Wood saws are a nice to have but I am very partial to metal files/saws. My ranger spends all of its time in storage and has been eclipsed by my collection of Swiss Champs.

Poncho who did your mod? I love that layout!

:mail: Received this "old Ranger" today, good condition , good snap on all the blades, Elinox tang marking and old style metal saw, 5 turn grooved corkscrew. Vic must have had a problem sharpening though, small blade has a curve/hook and large blade has a whole bunch of little teeth. Still, a very nice knife so I think I will keep it. 😜😜😜
I've been looking quite some time for this "old Ranger"!!!

Poncho, I had to go back aways to see the Ranger with camping logo that you used to feature in your posts on this topic. There must have been some subliminal suggestion in your posts because this look grew on me to the point where I just had to get a camping logo Ranger for myself.
Now, you are featuring a Ranger mod with a magnifier. I saw someone else post a similar mod some time ago that also featured an inline awl. I think it is a useful tool that I would love to have but it's no longer a Ranger. Bring the camping logo Ranger back buddy!!!
Jim

Poncho, I had to go back aways to see the Ranger with camping logo that you used to feature in your posts on this topic. There must have been some subliminal suggestion in your posts because this look grew on me to the point where I just had to get a camping logo Ranger for myself.
Now, you are featuring a Ranger mod with a magnifier. I saw someone else post a similar mod some time ago that also featured an inline awl. I think it is a useful tool that I would love to have but it's no longer a Ranger. Bring the camping logo Ranger back buddy!!!
Jim
P.S., Wonderful photos!!!
Thanks for the kind words Jim :salute: I am quite happy with my mod though and have carried it everyday since i made it with the exception of challenges where I don't :salute: Also mine has an inline awl
I would love to see you guys post some pics of Rangers in here as well :tu: Also since there is no model like my mod I dubbed it the Master Ranger and that is why I post it in here
That's right! I forgot about your Master Ranger. When you first mentioned it, I was thinking "Where do I buy one?"

I wished I could have only added the inline Phillips and not the mag glass (using the double openers across from the Phillips) but it wasn't possible so I just put the whole layer in  It would have made it much closer to the Ranger than this one but I still really love this SAK and am very happy to have made it :tu: I may get my old camping scale Ranger out next month and get some pics of it :salute: :like:
Awesome!! :like: :like:
What a toolset!!!
I was happy with my one Ranger purchase until Poncho teased us (quite some time ago) with post after post featuring his Camping Logo Ranger. Finally, I just had to get one for myself. Pictured below is my new old stock in box Camping Logo Ranger together with my other Ranger with the standard red scales.

I've got a Craftsman and don't mind pocket carrying it but the Ranger is s bit more friendly. Love that Camping scale and that beautiful box Jim!!

Thanks! I do have a number of vintage boxes but no where near the amount of FolderBeholder. She had an impressive inventory of NIB SAKs from old stock. The Craftsman is a cousin of the Handyman (like Tinker and Spartan) in that the Craftsman has the Philips driver in place of the corkscrew.

Folder beholder does have some drool-worthy stuff!
Here's the old ones I've held on to... just sold a NIB 70's economy Camper and kind of regret it.... but the 60's Elinox Camper helps me deal with the loss. :D
Included my one and only Ranger as to not completely derail the thread...

We seem to have a new theme, of personalized colors for our Rangers. Got my new green scales the other day, swapped them out last night at the kitchen table.

It is a proto-ranger of sorts, after all.

That's a nice one Gareth! Actually, I've talked with a lot of people who only carry a Ranger and rarely need more. I've always considered it to be a pocket friendly Swiss Champ.
"Pocket friendly Swiss Champ" I think sums it up very nicely indeed. :tu:
Hello everyone. I have a couple of Victorinox Swiss army knives and is fairly new to this forum. I just found this thread and thought it will be a good place to seek some advice.
I need help identifying a Victorinox with a Camping tent logo. What I have looks like possibly a Ranger as it is 91mm and the layer tools looks the same set as the Ranger but there are only 3 back layer tools (corkscrew, reamer and small slotted screwdriver) and the reamer does not have an eyelet.
Anyone can help me identify this? Is it an older Ranger model or is it a different model altogether?
I too have just ordered a Huntman Plus :salute:
Maybe it’s time for a Ranger challenge soon :D

My Ranger came in today. After a good cleaning it looks sharp again 8)
I really like it! Only slightly bigger than an Explorer, but with a much higher tool density. Love the fact that every available tool slot is occupied, even though I don’t use the backside tools very often. But, better to have it and only use every so often, than not have it and wanting it :D
My father gave me my Camping Ranger 40 years ago and it is still my favourite, for the reason it was from dad. I have other SAKs which I will post. This is my first post!
It is hard to tell, as everyone feels different about that. I carry mine suspended, either with a small clip or the Vic belt hanger, and have no issues with it.
Welcome, Des!
Isn't it awesome, the longevity of Victorinox, not only in models and how long some have been around, with a few updates and improvements over time, but how long the tool itself will last.
welcome mate
I use a hanger clip similar to the one pictured here

So do I. You should be fine carrying the Ranger with it :tu:
Welcome des! Post a pic and show it off!
Camping inlays are still my favorite.

Thanks again. I’ll try to post some pics of my Camping Ranger. I treated it recently to a new red leather Victorinox pouch

Still carrying the Ranger
Love those scales. 8)Wasn't sure if they would work on a Ranger, but I love 'em!
Name the movie this quote is from:
"Well, you know your own business, maybe, but in your place, I would not take up with a Ranger out of the wild...."

Fellowship of the Ring?
My first SAK was an early 80's Ranger. I still have it. My dad bought it in west Germany while he was stationed there in the really early 80's.
Any thing to be able to date it exactly?
Couldn't resist the inlay, so I have this Ranger in route.
